Showtime Orders Two More Seasons of Dexter

Dexter is probably my favorite show on television right now (that might change when Lost and Battlestar return next year. It seemed like almost nobody I know watched the first season when it originally aired on Showtime. Thankfully, word of mouth got around and the series gained a ton of traction on DVD.

And now Showtime has announced that they have renewed the series for TWO MORE SEASONS of 12 episodes each! I’m kind of glad that Showtime is resisting the temptation to extend the season to 18-24 episodes. The 12-episode arc is perfect for this series. The third season will conclude on December 14th 2008. The fourth season will go into production in Spring 2009.

Discuss: What do you think of Season 3 of Dexter?

I'm pretty much obsessed with dexter right now, I like the 3rd season so far despite Jimmy Smits very passionate character. I think Michael C. Hall is the most interesting character actor I've seen in a show or film yet.

This show has officially jumped the shark this season. I get the feeling they were out of stories to tell this season, so they are just throwing things in. Without spoilers, there are two big developments in Dexter that just make me groan.
  • I don't think season 3 is as good as 1 or 2 so far, but it's not bad by any means. And it's only 4 episodes in, so who knows how it'll turn out? All I know is I'll be tuning in every Sunday.

I agree w/ the original post: this is by far the best show on T.V. at the moment. I'm sure my mind will change once LOST comes back. The show IS missing something, however. I feel that the first two seasons were much darker. This is the first season where they depart from the Jeff Lindsey novels, so it's all original scripts from here on out. The only good thing about this season is the development of Dexter's character trying to balance 'work' and a family life. Either way, it's good to read that SHOWTIME picked up the show for two more seasons.

This season is not as good as the first 2, there's not question about it. Season 1 was mind blowing and Season 2 had only 2-3 sub par episodes. However, this season they are just going over the same plot point over and over and over again. The first 2 seasons, if you missed one episode you missed a major plot development, but in the last 3 episodes you really didn't miss anything "major". I wouldn't say the show has jumped the shark, but it's definitely at it's lowest point of it's young existence AND the season is still young, so let's keep our fingers crossed.

This is my favorite show on TV right now, and while the first few episodes of Season 3 have been a little underwhelming, I'm definitely going to keep watching to see where they go with the show. Another two seasons after this one sounds good to me.

This is great. I've only seen season 1 so far, I'm about to cut into season 2. I really hate the opening, but the shows really compelling.

    (Btw)
Dexter wins Best TV show tonight on the Scream Awards. (Spike Tv)

    Dexters speech was pretty funny....

they need to get rid of the narration, it explains everything. I don't want to be told what I'm watching, the show is predictable enough without it.
  • emily
I haven't been that impressed with the season so far but its still been really good.
  • I love the narration. They need to reread the books and bring it back to the cleverness of the first season. I am however getting tired of Rita...
  • Brian
Absolutely love the show. Don't absolutely love the direction they're taking in season 3. Watching season 2 I thought to myself if...*what just happened in the last episode aired* happens, I don't think I'm going to like it. I don't particularly like the direction it's taking because....well Dexter is pretty much gone, it's a new guy now, he's still interesting and all but after this his freedom is gone. Guess we'll have to see how the season pans out.
  • hell yes to this news. i was thinking when id hear something about next season and now i get two new seasons. life couldnt be better.
  • I thought Sunday nights episode was a great piece of televison!

While it's not bad in the least, this season has been very underwhelming, as was said earlier. It still is clearly one of, if not THE best show on TV right now, but the suspense seems to be lacking this time around, and it's becoming a bit more predictable.

Same could be said about Heroes this season, too. Maybe it's just something to do with 3rd seasons...
  • The show is wonderful, and I'm still watching the third season, but I'm having a hard time seeing Dexter keep up his "extra-curricular activities" and become the [SPOILER] husband/father figure. What happens when the kids come across his stash of killer stuff? That could be interesting for a couple episodes, but there needs to be some huge, major complications to keep it interesting.

MADMEN. so much better than dexter. if you think dexter is better than madmen, you are crazy.
  • Mr. NC-17
This is bar none the best tv show that is not on cable which is perfect, because as CBS took season 1 and edited for TV, it felt like some of the Dexterness was lost.

Michael C. Hall is 100% incredible in this. His deep and dark turn into this killer is just phenominal. This season yes is not as good as the 1st 2, but yet would the 2nd season been that good if it did not tie into the 1st one? Season 3 is starting fresh with no ties to the 1st or 2nd one. It's about Dexter becoming the master to the code of Harry so that he can finally put that behind him once and for all. Its brilliant writing, and the cast works perfectly with one another. This show is bar none the best thing right now on the air waves.

I think first 2 seasons were so good that no matter what they did it would pale in comparison.
for me, the first is usually the best (ex: The Wire: Season 1).
it's kinda like music, the first album from a certain band is considered the best from most fans.
everything that follows isn't bad, but just isn't as good.
  • Jmoney
This is horrible news, Dexter is the greatest show on tv but the character should have a short life span, this show should end this season, it's already becoming pedastrian with this stupid baby storyline. TWO more seasons will officially emasculate the best character on tv, this news has ruined my day.

the perfect scenario would be debra finding out Dexter is a serial killer and taking him down.
  • robocop
    spoiler:
dexter tells the mexican fbi guy he is the killer and they team up in this season.
  • clipsezilla
I love Dexter! Season 1 was great and Season 2 was incredible. I've never despised a fictional character as much as I have with Lila. Season 3 has been pretty good so far, can't wait to see what twists and turns happen
  • Christopher Marc
like most of the season it's a slow start but hopefully it starts getting more intense....on a side note I really hate this idea that Debra needs her own storylines now, the character is boring....it would be nice if she could stop swearing like white trash, normal people and cops included don't swear that often ...unless the writers can't think of anything for her character to say
  • This season isn't as strong, but I feel it can be. It's just going a little slow.

    @pangloss
I watched all of season 1 in HD glory, consecutively at that. I can see why people would like Madmen but it just didn't grab me. I really liked the characters and their stories but because there's no sense of progression, yes there is char dev, or overall story I'm just not as engaged as I should be. I enjoyed what I saw but there are better things imo, like dexter.
  • Jon
If Rita dies in the next episode, I would be very pleased. Dexter doesn't really need her or really care for her.
  • I don't know why, in the US, you can't pull the plug on something when it's at its peak, rather than bleeding it dry. Dexter doesn't need to run and run - you could have safely killed it off (so to speak) after the second season. That was a natural end to the story. The third season hasn't been that great so far in my opinion. :(

You produce the best TV in the world in America, the stations just need to know when enough's enough.
  • Tobiasthenevernude
Bar none, Season 1 of Dexter was the best television, ever.
I watched, but was not as enthralled, with Season 2. I felt like they were developing other characters, and lost track of Dex -- the reason for the show. Season 3, I think, returns to Dexter as the focus -- [spoiler] his ability to make legitimate (fraternal) friendships, his ability to come to grips with who he is and then whether or not he wants to recreate that. Deb's relationships have never really knocked me out, so it's nice to see her focus on police work rather than who she's (not) sleeping with. All in all, I think Season 3 has potential to return to the magic of Season 1.

    SPOILER****

I think with what we saw with Dexter going on his "Fishing Trip"... His Lady now rushing into the Hospital, DA Prado and his family joining her in the Hospital during her time of need, and everyone questioning, where is Dexter?...

I think they are just taking their time to set up for something big either this season or season 4... Versus last season where it was kind of drawn out with Doaks and Dexter and as TOBIASHTHE NEVERNUDE said before, I do agree that Dexter is better with the entire focus on him, but with focusing on other medium sized characters it helps create more plot points to change up the story... Thus this season with the boring IA agent that is harping on Deb and you have Ramon Prado who is a big winey bitch and you have some other smaller sized characters that are just a little irritating but they do move the plot and make you question medium sized characters that you might have never even noticed or thought to notice. Like the new Detective in the new 3rd season... For instance in the 2nd season, I didn't really care for Deb's relationship with the FBI agent, but it did give him more reason to lessen his suspects towards Dexter... so as boring as they may be they do have a reason.

The reason I really liked season 1 was that his brother just kind of shows up out of no where, you don't have his brother's back story as much as you really have Dexter's and it leaves you wondering what makes these two obviously tormented souls live this life of killing; where Dex's brother was an obvious deranged killer for pure impulse, Dexter kills by his step-father / father's code... It makes you question nature versus nurture, where no one controlled Dexter's Brother and he would let his "Dark Passenger" reign loose and Dexter has a controlled method created by his father to feed his "Dark Passenger".

Season 2 was a development of all these other side characters versus really dwelling on Dexter and his inner workings of these characters... But then again you did get to see how messed up and obsessed Lilah was. You got to see the inner problems Deb was having and her resentment and now paper-thin temperament towards criminals / killers / lowlifes after her interaction with the Ice-Truck Killer; which in turn creates a more dramatic fall later when and if she ever finds out about Dexter.

I don't mind all the build up of medium characters that move along the plot, but I was kind of like, who cares about Dex's girlfriend's druggie ex-husband. But I guess it was a needed plot point in order to get Dexter to admit to a fake drug use and to meet Lilah.

I think my biggest problem was how drawn out everything started to feel towards the middle of the 2nd season, it was like a big waltz around is he going to get caught... I think by that whole tension of the Bay Harbor Butcher starting from episode 1 is what drew out the story and prolonged it for me. I kind of lost that tension half way and then Doax confronted Dexter in the swamp and got locked up and it picked back up for me.

I think this season you are going to get punched in the mouth around episode 5 or 6 and there will be a cliff hanger to lead you into next season... So all in all, this season may seem more tamed then the last two, but there is going to need to be a big surprise to keep their viewers in their seats or they risk pulling a LOST SEASON 2 where people loose interest from hysterical sub plots that don't fit any rhyme or reason or make sense because they involve a plot for 4 seasons later.

I love Dexter and too are a little underwhelmed by this season so far, but still find it one of the best. One thing I don't understand is all the love for Mad Men. It just may be that it isn't my cup of tea, but other than Jon Hamm, this show is super annoying, especially Vincent Kartheiser, ugh. To each his own I guess. If you like it more power to ya.
  • Brian
In my opinion the writers are having two things happen to them.
First they're getting overwhelmed with the show's success and demand for a complicated intellectual storyline. Therefore they are desperate for new ideas. (ie the books are done, what do we do now? new James Bond type writing.)

Second, with the show's popularity jumping and becoming...well almost mainstream, I think the writers (and new director) are getting sucked into the hole of no return in which we call "Hollywood type mainstream dulled down garbage"...I think that's the lightest way I can put it. The show is becoming all sensative and whatnot which for a character like Dexter is....revolting.

Depending on how they smarten up for next season or how they set us up for next season, there is still hope I guess...not much, but it's there. I love Dexter, absolutely love it. I think it's the greatest thing to grace our television screens but I can also recognize that they are not only starting to ruin the character but they're just butchering the show. It makes me sad.
