Transformers: The Ride at Universal Studios

Universal Studios Hollywood and Singapore will be launching a theme park attraction based on Michael Bay’s Transformers. Planned for an early 2011 debut, the ride will use High Definition 3D footage, along with practical special effects and “stunning” robotics (ie expect animatronic giant robots) that according to a press release will “transform perceptions of theme park experiences”. The attraction will replace the former Backdraft special effects show and special effects stages in the lower lot.

According to the press release, track will also be installed, which hints that it will be a moving ride, and not a walk-through attraction. No word on if the storyline will tie into Transformers, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen or a possible third Transformers film. All we know is that the ride will “place humans in the middle of a war between the Autobots and Decepticons”. The Simpsons Ride cost the part a reported $40 million to build, and I would guess that a Transformers attraction would be even more costly.

If it's anything like the Spider-Man 3D ride, this will be awesome. I was at the Orlando park last year, and the Spidey experience was a major highlight.

so long as it's better than that putrid mummy ride, i'll be happy. Imagine being on a rollercoaster indoors and seeing cardboard cut out drawings of mummie's with black light effects, and boom you have the curse of the mummy ride.

This is cool I guess. I just wish it wasn't so obvious that they're making these movies solely to sell toys. Transformers is, believe it or not, more than a toy commercial. It's a mythology, a classic story like your spidey or star wars (originals), not a soulless cash grab. I hope they remember that.

Wish the Orlando park would follow suit.

I just got done working on a National Geographic Documentary about this new park. And all I can say is that it is going to be so awesome. Just wait for Sci-Fi City, the Madagascar Ride, and the new E.T. adventure. We got to see the people creating, and developing the concepts for these rides here in LA, and trust me transformers is in good hands. Too bad it's all the way in Singapore.

Oh and Pete, while working on this I found out that the reason the Back to the Future Ride was replaced with the Simpsons' Ride was because Universal's marketing guys discovered during a focus group that no one knew that Back to the Future was based on a movie. They didn't know the characters or a thing about the trilogy. Man that broke my heart. We've got to keep the classics alive. I'm gonna start handing out box sets for christmas!

I was at Universal last night for HHN and commenting how much the Backdraft show sucks; I'm glad to see they're going to do something useful with that space. I did enjoy the sound effects stages, but they're dated and I'm not sad to see it go. I did go on The Simpsons ride, which I found to be fun, but also disappointing. It's still the same ride as Back to the Future only with the Simpsons as the theme. The fact that it cost $40 million to build I can only assume was for the scenery and creating the animation for the ride because rest is what was there before.
  • Ah, mediocre movies turned into mediocre rides....

Sounds awesome. It's not like all my favorite rides there are being replaced with shit. I am not saying that Transformers was shit, I am just saying from a ratio of shit and good, it is weighing more towards shit *cough* The Simpson's Ride *cough*

its about time, backdraft should have been taken out 10 years ago but instead they kept getting rid of their good attractions. seems like a good fit since the entire point of universal studios is to put you in the middle of all your favorite movies and transformers seems like a great and contemporary choice. i dont know what the point of the simpsons ride was, they claimed back to the future was out of date because the franchise is 20 years old and then they replaced it with the simpsons which is only a few years younger, the shorts first started in 87, how much longer can that show be around?
