Early Buzz: Quantum of Solace is No Casino Royale

The first reviews for the new James Bond film Quantum of Solace have begun to hit the interwebs. Critics seem to agree that the film lacks the narrative of Casino Royale. It is shorter, darker, less dialogue, more high-temp confusing action sequences, and some dull expository scenes. Oh, and everyone agrees that Daniel Craig is excellent as Bond (but was there any doubt after the first film?). Bottom line is people liked the film, but it’s no Casino Royale. Check out the excerpts below:

Times Online: “It’s James Bond, licence to bore. Quantum of Solace may be a sequel to Casino Royale but it lacks that movie’s panache and brio.” … “Bond is a boorish oaf who simply rushes from country to country with the manic speed of Jason Bourne, including sequences shot in Panama, Chile, Italy, Mexico and Austria, in a plot about holding a country to ransom over its water supply. Quantum of Solace lacks any wit, ironic or otherwise, which has been a strength of so many 007 films.” … “At around one hour 40 minutes, this Bond is shorter than most. Somehow it felt longer.”

The Guardian: “This didn’t excite me as much as Casino Royale and the villain is especially underpowered.” … “This is a crash-bang Bond, high on action, low on quips, long on location glamour, short on product placement.” … “I was disappointed there was so little dialogue, flirtation and characterization in this Bond: Forster and his writers Paul Haggis, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade clearly thought this sort of sissy nonsense has to be cut out in favor of explosions. Well, perhaps that is what Bond fans want (not this Bond fan, though). But I was also baffled that relatively little was made of the deliciously villainous Amalric”.

The Telegraph: “…owes much to the quick-fire editing of the Bourne thrillers.” … “In this much darker film” … ” For half an hour or so after the pre-credits ‘teaser’, the film barely lets up.” … “And then, the pacing becomes more fractured. One wonders if director Marc Forster and screenwriters Paul Haggis and Neal Purvis haven’t tried a little too hard to distance the film from traditional Bond plots. The expository dialogue scenes can be dull, and cram in so many machinations and double-crossings that it’s easy to lose track of who’s duping whom. And yet, several times - just when you’re tempted to consult your watch - the movie suddenly surprises.”

BBC: “It’s a film that feels like the second part of a trilogy, with this being the bleaker second act.” … “The raw nature of the film may put off some who yearn for the days of gizmos, gadgets and Bond quips as he dispenses with faceless opponents.” … “But for the most part the villainy rightly takes a back seat to Bond’s emotional journey.”

Empire: “In an era marked by franchise bloat, it’s entirely admirable that Quantum of Solace is the shortest Bond movie to date – it drops a great many of the long-running series mannerisms (callous quips, expository lectures, travelogue padding, Q and Moneypenny)” … “Everything in this movie is edited as if it were an action sequence, which means that when the set-pieces come they have to go into overdrive to stay ahead of the game, with Bourne veteran Dan Bradley staging more brutal, devastatingly fast fights and chases.” … “we get less to latch onto emotionally since Daniel Craig became the complete 007 over the course of Casino Royale, and here just has to be set loose” … “while it’s exciting, it’s not exactly anyone’s idea of fun. To keep in the game, perhaps the next movie could let the hero enjoy himself a bit more.”

The Shiznit: “But Craig’s emotionless visage is so blank, the script so bereft of character, Quantum Of Solace feels like just another day at the office for 007.” … ” Craig, it must be said, is excellent.” … “High-tempo sequences, like the opening car chase and an extremely Bournian rooftop pursuit, are disorientating in the extreme: too fast, too sloppy and too ruthlessly edited. Often, things change in the blink of an eye – one second Bond is lying on his back, the next he’s jumping out a window, the next he’s swinging from a rope. It’s often impossible to keep up.” … ” Fight scenes often seem practiced and stagey” … “seems a little too far-fetched even for a Bond movie. All we ask is for some consistency – this isn’t Crank, this is Bond.” “Quantum Of Solace is a crushing disappointment. Try as you might, you’ll be unable to invest in any of the characters”

The Daily Mirror: “Quantum of Solace is a leaner, meaner animal, rammed with shoot-outs, a boat chase and even an aerial dogfight. And our hero is an angry, embittered man out for blood. Mostly it doesn’t feel like a Bond film at all. Not once does Craig say: “The name’s Bond. James Bond.” There’s no Q or his gadgets. Heck, we even see Bond in a cardigan. There are no risque quips or arched eyebrows.” … “It doesn’t disappoint - just don’t expect the brilliance of Casino Royale.”

    Ohh......
  • Sean
Not surprised. The premise of the movie is stupid (James Bond getting revenge over a girl??? When does he care about women? He just bangs a new one in every movie.)
  • Quan
    Well... that's disappointing.
  • Christopher Marc
well at least it can't be as bad as "Die Another Day"...so that's a good thing
  • Pilled
When I saw the trailer I got an impression that the franchise was steering towards a more generic action film type, which isn't necessarily bad considering how stale the typical James Bond tropes have become, but this looks like it could have dropped the James Bond name all together and I doubt anybody would have noticed.

"Mostly it doesn’t feel like a Bond film at all."

And that's exactly why I like the Craig films. Because they're not like any of the other Bond films. I never liked James Bond until Craig stepped in. Now the series has a set of balls and they ditched the 70's style dialogue and one-liners. They actually treat him as a "special agent" in these new films.

    Who would have thought?

to bad casino royale was no james bond movie
  • nelson
you change directors you get different visions
  • Matt
@ Sean: I thought the whole point of Casino Royale was to show why Bond became such a womanizer. He let himself fall in love with some broad at the beginning of his double-0 career and she almost backstabs him.

Who knows, maybe these reveiwers were expecting the sly wink all the previous Bonds seemed to give to the camera and didn't get it.
  • Captain Awesome
"to bad casino royale was no james bond movie"

    Thank God for that.
  • Bummer.

    And I *hate* "hyper-cut" editing.

I was really looking forward to this. At least the Star Trek trailer will be attached to it...

    @ Sean:

"James Bond getting revenge over a girl??? When does he care about women?"

If you've ever read the books or watched the movies you should know that he does truly care about and love a woman at least twice. First in Casino Royale, when he falls in love with vespyr and she kills herself. And in On Her Majesty's secret service when He marries Tracy. When she's killed, he seeks out REVENGE against Blofeld. I think Quantum of Solace has a story worth telling.
  • Eric
    @ Matt

I don't know if you were being literal or not but Bond only winked at the camera once in any of the movies. In On Her Majesty's Secret Service he turns to the camera and say "This never happened to the other guy". It's too bad that movie had such a horrible director, because it's the best story in my opinion.
  • Jonathan
I'm sorry. James Bond is James Bond. That's how he's been in the seventies, and I don't understand why they don't at least have nods to the originals like "bond, James Bond" and "Q" both of which are HUGE parts of James Bond movies. If they wanted to make a new action spy movie, just name it different. Steve Johnson: Action Spy! That would have been fine..
  • Jack Donaghy
Casino Royale did clock in at 2 and a half hours. Anything shorter would be welcomed.
  • Kokushi
WTF? 100 minutes, this movie need to be more than 120 minutes, casino royale was 150 minutes but even with that i cant wait to see it.
  • syms
So if I didnt' actually think Casino Royale was that brilliant either, where does this leave me? back to the Bourne trilogy i guess.
  • hoffamania
those reviews didn't really seem to bother me... we have what, 20+ old style bond movies? if you want to hear 'bond, james bond' you have plenty of choices.

    can't wait for quantum
  • Wall•E Plays Pong
"The something of Boris", what the heck does that mean, I have written it down, I will remember it now.
  • Brendan
I don't really understand why Martin Campbell doesn't want to direct any more Bond movies, as he is easily the best modern Bond director (Goldeneye and Casino Royale). He could've at least made a sweet trilogy with Craig, but nooooo, apparently making infinite money and awesome movies isn't on his "things to do" list.
  • If it's shorter and the villain is better, than those are both improvements over Casino Royale.
  • JakePT
This is dissapointing, I was expecting something as good or better than Casino Royale from the trailer.

Am I the only one who hates short movies?
  • carg0
    i was afraid of this.

in an effort to quickly cash in on Royale's success they sacrificed everything that made Royale so wonderful. so much for the rejuvinated Bond franchise...
  • KeanE
Well, its gonna be tough to top a cool movie like Casino Royale anyway, but at least we didn't have to wait 3 years (like usual time for a sequel) for a Daniel Craig Bond movie...
  • Chris
Action packed and lacking enough dialogue? Well, I was kinda expecting that. With the whole revenge deal and all, I figured he wouldn't really be in the mood for quipping too much.

Casino Royale was only really decent anyway. Who cares what critics say, anyway? Talk about letting someone tell you what to think.
  • Harry Lime
I've never cared a lick for the Bond series before Casino Royale, which I didn't think was that amazing anyway, other than some of the action. So I guess the bigger and the the closer Quantum gets to Bourne, the happier I'll be.
  • Ghost
James Bond is James Bond whether you like it or not.

Completely revamping it like Casino and this, is fun to watch but it isn't Bond anymore. Like someone said just name it something else.

I think even Dalton played a better Bond. And he had a revenge story as well being a badass but still being Bond-ish.
  • Autosuggestion
I had always been surprised that all of the buzz about this movie seemed to overlook (maybe acknowledge, but not seem to focus on) Martin Campbell not coming back after doing an excellent job with Casino Royale. Directors who prove themselves with tricky stuff like Casino Royale aren't given nearly enough credit.

And to Brendan... Campbell's next movie, Edge of Darkness, has tremendous potential with Mel Gibson coming out of semi-acting-retirement, based on an excellent property, and written by Departed scribe / Oscar winner William Monahan.

That said, I am looking forward to Quantum of Solace and have really high hopes for The Diving Bell and The Butterfly's Mathieu Amalric as the villain.
  • Delta Assault
The best Bond movie ever will not be made until Christopher Nolan takes a turn at directing.
  • Empire gave it the SAME rating as it gave Casino Royale - maybe want to add that in.
  • Rob
The reviewers all sound like people who just want the same old thing with a slight twist. How boring. I'll wait to see it and judge it on things like writing and acting, not whether the writing includes jokes, Bond says his name, or has an exploding cufflink gadget or not..
  • dbmcswai
itis a shame that this isn't up to par with casino royale. casino royale is one of my all time favorites...
  • thomas040
I BET you!... I BET YOU, I SAY, that there is no character development in this one.

THAT was what made Casino Royale stand out from the rest of the bond films. He had a lesson he had to learn. He thought he could trust and fall in love, but no... he can't. He learned. And we followed his personal journey as if it was our own.

Quantum Of Solace has no character development I promise you. Therefor it's a bore.
  • I confirm. I saw Quantum of Solace today in Paris. Craig is excellent : he keeps portraying Bond as a merciless killer. The action sequences are great. Humour is here too. The relationship between Bond and M takes an interesting turn. But Mathieu Amalric has no 'room' to play a big bad villain. In general, the plot is kinda weak and the very end quite anti-climatic. Nevertheless, it's a good movie and you all should go and see it.
  • Trebek
That's pretty much what I expected. It's sad that they just basically turned it into another Bourne film (according to a lot of critics). I wanted to see a BOND film.
  • Rockme
    fuck, dammit, damn director change
  • Of course Im dissappointed that Qos is not CR Part 2 and not as critically acclaimed as that one. I've been following the production of Qos since the end of my first viewing of CR (I saw it 8 times at the cinema)! But we got what we got. To enjoy Qos I guess I'll have to enjoy it just like a breathtaking action movie. And you dont get a great action movie every week!
I really hope that they will learn by their mistakes and make the next one much more balanced and Bondish. Dan is great and I want to thank Barbara once again for casting him because even a generic action movie with him as the leading man means much more to me than a generic action movie with Bruce Willis and Matt Damon combined.
Im sooo glad that almost every review states that he's brilliant;)
Im going to watch the movie without huge expectations now and without any care for critics opinions. And you too will make up your mind yourself when the film is released. It will be a hit commercially anyway;)
  • Walker
the reason why im HATING Daniel Caigs bond films is that they dont have the elements of a bond film. For example there were no car chases (the 1min one dont count, the car had no gadgets or missiles), the bond tune didnt play when he did something cool, he didnt say the names bond, james bond enough, and the were NO gagets WTF a bond film with no gadgets, lol.
i watched Die Another Day and The World is Not Enough this week and they were both much better,
  • nathan
saw the movie today and i must say, ok, its a great movie, it has action a bit of love and all that crap, but one of the problems i had was the action scenes, they were great but there were far to many for such a short bond move, ytou also watch these scene and think "OK, ANY MINUTE NOW, BOND THEME WILL KICK IN, ANY MINUTE......ANNNY MINUTE" but the sad fact of it is, there isnt one, even though hes killing the hell out his enemy, the tune just doesnt kick in and that really dissopoint me because its this tyune that gives me the excitment of the bond movie, second, what happened to his car, you see the aston martin for about 7 mins if that at the start of the movie and then it dissapears, gone forever. i didnt really notice these dissapearances aload but the one thing that kept me gripping my seat was that the gadgets had to be amazing, about a hour in, no gadgets, so i just thought the gadgets would be brought in later, a bit like die another day but still no, NO GADGETS, I MEAN WTF, James bond is GADGETS, he is the shit but this movie has in my opinion just been another bourne movie, execpt daniel craig and not matt damon, to be honest though, although i didnt at first like daniel craig because of him being blond(no offence, its just i think james blond should have black hair), i think he does suit the role but wheres the charm, the humour like pierse brosnon, alothough, maybe clive owen might have been a good bond lol
  • Richard Mahoney
It is because Martin Campbell is a great Bond director that he directed both Goldeneye and Casino Royale. He is the man to introduce a NEW BOND. He then allows other artists to have a go at the follow-ups. Why doesn't he direct every Bond film? Why should he? The style and new Bond has already been set up so he's done his job. I thought Quantum of Solace lacked Casino Royale's expert handling, but i think it's a stepping stone to the next one, where hopefully things will really get interesting.
  • Luis
Well, people liking this film are not Bond fans, maybe just Casino Royale fans, and I'm really surprised they love QOS when is definitely far from the standard set in the previous movie. If someone says that they are glad the movie is not a Bond movie, well ok, go and see the Bourne trilogy, then see QOS again and think it's the fourth chapter just with another actor but with the same character initials and leave Bond fans mourn in their disappointment. The plot is difficult to understand and, let's face it, there have been better in the saga, the shaky camera effect during the chases are confusing, the movie is too short, the song is awful, the main title sequence is not good at all, there are many questions from Casino Royale expected to be answered here and we got nothing, the crappy gun barrel in the end. This is Not a James Bond film at all!
  • Machine Samba
This movie sucked! Ask Martin Campbell back… nicely, then stab Paul Haggis in the eye with his own pencil.

Give Craig the material he deserves.
