Star Trek Plot Details Revealed

Entertainment Weekly’s Star Trek cover story is now online. There is a lot of new information, the centerpiece of which is the explaination of the plot:

Star Trek’s time-travel plot is set in motion when a Federation starship, the USS Kelvin, is attacked by a vicious Romulan (Eric Bana) desperately seeking one of the film’s heroes. From there, the film then brings Kirk and Spock center stage and tracks the origins of their friendship and how they became officers aboard the Enterprise. In fact, the movie shows how the whole original series crew came together: McCoy (Karl Urban), Uhura (Zoë Saldana), Scotty (Simon Pegg), Sulu (John Cho), and Chekov (Anton Yelchin). The adventure stretches from Earth to Vulcan, and yes, it does find a way to have Nimoy appearing in scenes with at least one of the actors on our cover — and maybe both. The storytelling is newbie-friendly, but it slyly assimilates a wide range of Trek arcana, from doomed Captain Pike (Bruce Greenwood) to Sulu’s swordsmanship to classic lines like, ”I have been, and always shall be, your friend.” More ambitiously, the movie subversively plays with Trek lore — and those who know it. The opening sequence, for example, is an emotionally wrenching passage that culminates with a mythic climax sure to leave zealots howling ”Heresy!” But revisionism anxiety is the point. ”The movie,” Lindelof says, ”is about the act of changing what you know.”

Sweet Jesus those dudes are still standing WAY too close together.

Who in the world would want to see this movie now? Fetishists?

    Please stop posting this picture.

Why don't people just watch The Wrath of Khan again? It's the only good Star Trek movie. Just like The Empire Strikes Back is the only good Star Wars movie. Two good movies, billions spent on crap. God bless America!

Shouldn't Lindelof be focused on making sure that Lost doesn't start to suck again?

I have to agree with that guy in the other post about this cover. Sure does look like the tween kirk is confidently grabbing Spock's ass just below camera frame and spock is "oh".

Ah, subversively playing with your core audience? Brilliant move.

I'm very happy to realize that I don't care that much about this. I like Abrams though, so I'm hoping for a good film. As a non-Star Trek fan, I liked the movie with the Borg and James Cromwell.

i could give two shits about every single last trek tv show and movie.

Quinto looks a little too... how shall I put it, toy like in this picture. But from the other spy shots we've seen and in the other photos he looks good. This movie looks like it is going to be heavily stylized, so it should be interesting.

Here's to hoping it's a good action adventure flick that will make for another good start to 09's season.
  • Jaybee U Tler
Star Trek is not about being an "action flick".

To comment on the characters in this movie, If it’s a “Prequel” to Star Trek TOS WHAT IN THE HELL ARE Mc COY AND CHEKOV DOING IN IT? we all know that in the first episode with Kirk it was Dr Piper and NOT Mc coy and i could be wrong but i don’t think Chekov was even in the first season, he joined the crew fresh from the academy much much later on. Oh and the uniforms are wrong again tin “where no man has gone before” they were different to the rest of the series.

THIS IS NOT A STAR TREK MOVIE IT’S A COMEDY SPOOF !!!!!!!!!!!!!

You guys suck. This picture is an attempt to copy a previous picture of the Duo (which people will now say they know!).
While being a trek fan, I agree that Trek is not about blowing suff up (perticularly in Kirks day). But this I can overlook if the plot is good.
While the old Enterprise from the 60's was clearly limited by available tech, and that Star Trek has in some way inspired real tech, I think it's a good idea and bad idea what Abrams has done with the ship. Some Tech upgrades and effects would be fine, but reinventing the look of the ship - Now thats just way wrong Abrams!

Yes the photo is far to airbrushed...but today...which photo's are'nt. To that I say...who gives a fershizzle. To the Bad Robot attempt at rechanneling Trek...MORE POWER TO 'EM!!! I can't wait. Honestly...I had no desire to see this...until I saw Abrams stamped all over it. The latest trailer is just incredible...really. I'm thrilled to see where this one goes.
