In a phone interview with the LA Times about his upcoming appearance as the 2008 Scream Awards, Tim Burton talked about the motivation behind his upcoming live-action/performance-capture 3D adaptation of Alice in Wonderland:

“It’s a funny project. The story is obviously a classic with iconic images and ideas and thoughts. But with all the movie versions, well, I’ve just never seen one that really had any impact to me. It’s always just a series of weird events. Every character is strange and she’s just kind of wandering through all of the encounters as just a sort of observer. The goal is to try to make it an engaging movie where you get some of the psychology and kind of bring a freshness but also keep the classic nature of ‘Alice.’ And, you know, getting to do it in 3-D fits the material quite well. So I’m excited about making it a new version but also have the elements that people expect when they think of the material.”

But how do you make the classic story into a more engaging movie? Aren’t the strange characters and fantastical visuals enough to engage an audience? Lets hope that Burton doesn’t force a new unneeded narrative into the film.

We'll see. I think burton's always been making alice and wonderland movies from the start of his career, so this should be a easy. He'll find some way to screw it up though.

Tim had a new forced narrative in his version of "Wonka"; so with Alice, I"m not surprised. Being the 'remake' king that he is, he's always stating "Oh this or that never impacted me". Be it Wonka, Apes, and now this.

So... what.. we'll see some of the cheshire cat's backstory? How his father never loved him, or how the kids at school teased him for hating Christmas, and so he always smiles to cover up the pain?

Sounds like Oscar-caliber stuff, right there.
  • JokerLover
im not surprised. Burton always comes up with something unique and makes it even UNIQUER!!! anyway, i trust dis will be an awesome-ness film like all his other films.

    BURTON ROCKS!!!
  • Matty
AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS THIS MAY BE A GOOD IDEA!!!

I MEAN, COME ON! I THINK I KNOW WHAT TIM IS GOING FOR! FACE IT, ALL OF THE ALICE IN WONDERLAND AND THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS MOVIES WERE JUST ABOUT A GIRL WANDERING AROUND A FANTASY LAND AND MEETING STRANGE PEOPLE, IT NEVER HAD A GOOD STORY! I THINK HE IS TRYING TO MAKE THIS PSYCHOLOGICAL LIKE "BIG FISH", PULLNG YOUR HEART STRINGS!

ALICE MAY BEGIN AS A TROUBLED CHILD IN THE REAL WORLD, GO TO WONDERLAND, LEARN A HEART-FELT LESSON, AND GO BACK TO THE REAL WORLD!

DISNEY MAY RECOVER FROM SOME YEARS OF DISSAPOINTMENT, FINALLY!

    YOU GO, TIM!
  • I'm most definitely NOT going to see that!...

What's so original and worth seeing in the 50-th remake of a story??? Come on, even if Burton pull out some awesome, amazing way of filming this, it will still be the same old story we've all watched far too many times!...

Has anyone here actually read Carroll's original stories? Though I've enjoyed some previous iterations of the tale, it can't be denied that each adaptation has taken various liberties in translating the material to screen - a more 'engaging/psychological' take doesn't necessarily denote Burton's intention to tinker with the plot, perhaps just that he'll play up these elements already present in Carroll's work. I mean, it can hardly be denied that the '51 Disney film didn't really sketch Alice a rounded and nuanced character beyond the typical 'waif adrift' lot she's typically handed...

    @ Matty

Isn't it ridiculous to think that you can 'outdo' the original source? Imagine if some direct wants to make another movie about Jesus, but make it 'better'.
  • akumi
    Oi Vey,

Two things. First, neither he nor anyone here has claimed that he is trying to or should try to make it better than the original books. Second, improving on the source material is definitely possible, although it is easier if you are trying to improve on source material that isn't too great to begin with. Still, it's a valid point that you usually shouldn't try to create something that is an improvement on the source material, but instead try to recreate the things which people like about the source material enough to warrant a movie being made.

Regardless, your comment about Jesus makes no sense. Are you considering Mel Gibson's movie about Jesus to be the original source material, or perhaps Scorcese's ? Or maybe you mean like, the actual Jesus himself. I guess you could be talking about the bible, but honestly, who couldn't make a movie more entertaining than the bible?

Ill be the first to say, I hate most Tim Burton films! Batman, Apes, etc. For most part I find them to be campy, but Alice in Wonderland is all about that. So yea, I like the idea of Tim Burton directing this. I think he will really shine with this project actually.

This will probably the only time you ever see me post something favorable for Tim Burton so enjoy it!
  • Jamie
Tim Burton, who ran out of original ideas long ago, now just reimagines other people's ideas and doesn't do it particularly well.

    Fuck Tim Burton.
  • hater
Tim Burton's career has been either very good or very bad. Sweeney Todd, Big Fish, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands were all very good, but Apes, Charlie, Batman Returns were awful. He has interesting vision and I think Alice is right down his alley, but it will be interesting to see how it goes. I just hope he doesn't make it technicolour like Charlie was because that was just....
  • Ghost
Not engaging? Originally when the book first came out everyone thought the book wasn't good because it made no sense and Alice came out none the wiser, no character growth, other then we know she tries so hard to be an adult in the beginning, and Carroll has said that was the point, he wanted it to be that way. Sorta like, "WTF was that all about?" and that was it. If you try to make it more psychological well then, let's just go watch Manson's Lewis Carroll flick instead.
  • whocares?
Fuck you, Tim Burton. Seriously, FUCK OFF.
  • Filmfan.
Personally the hate for this film is, especially at this early stage, so so poor, we should praise such a director for being inventive and imaginative in todays current climate of shit films. Cant wait to see this.
  • JA
too bad guillermo del toro is so busy. i know he touched on it in 'pan's labyrinth' but i woulda loved to see his take on 'alice.'
  • jamie
    this is going to suck
  • Dann
i'm actually very excited for this film, but looking at some at your comments i do agree with most of you that tims films are mostly a hit or miss but hopefully this is as good as his recent sweeney todd film and doesn;t turn out like charile
  • i love all your movies like sweeny tod was genious and the nightmare before christmas i love you movies! keep up the good work tim
  • Can't wait to see what Tim Burton does with this - and in 3D !
