Happytime Murders - A Muppet Noir

The Jim Henson Co has begun to develop a puppet film noir detective comedy titled Happytime Murders. If we knew nothing else about this project, I would still spend $10 on a movie ticket. The story follows a puppet detective who is hired to solve a string of murders around a popular children’s television show called the Happytime Gang. The film will be populated with a mixture of human and puppet characters (to clarify, not “muppets”), and will be released under an alternative label “for content created specifically and exclusively for adult audiences.” Sounds promising. But here are two reasons why the film could suck:

1. Unfortunately, Brian Henson, the guy behind some of the worst of the Muppet movies (Treasure Island, Christmas Carol) is helming the project. To be fair, Henson directed episode of Stephen King’s Nightmares and Dreamscapes titled Battleground. It was filmed entirely without dialogue, and told the story of toy soldiers who come to life and kill a hit man played by William Hurt. Could be that children films just aren’t Henson’s area of expertise?

2. The film is being scripted by Todd Berger, the screenwriter behind the horrible 2005 Tom Arnold television movie Chasing Christmas. Berger most recently penned the direct to dvd Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Furious Five short film for Dreamworks Animation.

  • ummm, muppet Christmas carol is one of the best
  • Nostra
I agree with you on treasure island, but the christmas carol one was very good. Unless you mean It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie, which was very, very bad.....
  • Dr.Doc
    this sounds so cool.
  • Hendo
Yea I really like Muppet Christmas Carol
  • Sonny
You must be thinking of a Verry Merry Muppet Christmas Movie because I've always thought, and always been under the assumption, that Christmas Carol was considered one of the better Muppet films.

Regardless, let's hope this one is awesome because it has the potential to be very cool.

    Farscape?
  • robN
yeah muppet christmas carol and treasure island are great

if you meant muppets from space id understand
  • smither
errrrrrrrrrr peter, christmas carol was incredible
  • Cj Guest
Although not the best, Christmas Carol was a very good muppet movie. Treasure Island was abysmal! I think Henson's on to something with the film noir angle! We'll see...
  • Dr. Handsome
I have always wanted to do something like this, Who Framed Roger Rabbit but with Muppets. It should be interesting to see the Henson team take a crack at it!

The kids show thing reminds me of the puppet episode of Angel.

Also: they should really adapt Robert Rankins novel "Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse."
  • giantyoda
Yeah - Muppets from Space was the shoddy one. I thought Christmas Carol was pretty fun!

So, this sounds great and all for grown-up Muppet-heads like myself and many others, but when are my kids going to get to experience some (G/PG-rated) Muppet Mayhem on the big screen?

I could sure use some Electric Mayhem given the economic times, etc.
  • Meli
I love the Muppet's Christmas Carol, but Treasure Island was pretty lame.

    This new project sounds interesting.
  • oh man i hope this is a big hit and theres more muppet/puppet movies, like labyrinth and dark crystal
  • Dustin
They should get Peter Jackson to help them out, Meet the Feebles anyone?
  • Nick
Where does this leave Nick Stoller and Jason Segel's muppet movie?

There was an article recently in the New York Times about they're gradually trying to make the Muppets relevant again to a younge generation who've not heart of them (thus the recentl viral videos) and have begun pairing muppets with popular disney characters and shows in order to gain excitement for the movie, perhaps this is something smaller scale that's meant to reintroduce the muppets before a larger film?
  • Um, Muppet Christmas Carol rocks. I'm glad plenty of others have seen the light.
  • Josh
"Where does this leave Nick Stoller and Jason Segel’s muppet movie?"

They're still developing it at Disney.
  • This excites me so much. You have no idea. And I love Muppet Christmas Carol as well.

And maybe...just maybe...this will bring back another Muppet show on TV. I was a huge fan of Muppets Tonight (The Muppet Show was a little before my time).

hi hate to break this to you all, but brian henson and his crew have nothing to do with the muppets anymore, the muppets are now property of disney
  • No brian henson is not involved with the regular muppets, but he was involved with muppet Christmas Carol.
  • Correction, I meant to say Brian Henson is no longer involved with the regular muppets
  • D' Viking
Unless Brian Henson pulls a miracle of genius out of his magic puppet hat, I don't think this movie will be worth more than a few cheep laughs, as much as I want it to be more.
From his previous adult material (Puppet Up, and exclusively Tinseltown), the approach Henson has to adult puppet entertainment is to play the 'look at puppet be naughty' jokes in place of real comedy.
I want this to be great, I really do, but I fear this is yet another great idea that will be mishandled.

p.s. Muppet Christmas Carol is in my opinion of the best Muppet Movies, and while Muppet Treasure Island doesn't pack the same heat, it's well respected in many people childhood memories.
  • Langwurst
Those are the two best muppet movies ever!
  • Bobcat
Seriously, Muppets Christmas Carol is one of my favorite Muppet, and Christmas, movies! What are you smoking!??!

As for Treasure Island, it might not be quite as good, but I also did enjoy it.

This sounds interesting, I'm down for some new Muppet stuff. I loved the old Muppet Show.
  • D' Viking
C'mon guys- remember that this isn't going to be the Muppets. Disney own The Muppets and has their own plans (including a Christmas special and a movie). This is the Jim Henson company, who's now struggling to produce something new in the world of puppetry.

Bottom line: No new Muppet movies from The Jim Henson Company, only puppet movies.
