New Poster: Pixar’s Up

Yahoo! Movies has a look at the theatrical teaser poster for Pixar’s Up. As unsure as I am about Pixar’s next film (I want to love it, but nothing I’ve seen so far has me sold), there is no denying the fantastical color scheme used in the early marketing is beyond beautiful. I had previously assumed that the trailer would premiere attached to Bolt in November, but the early release of the theatrical one-sheet has me thinking that it might happen sooner. May-be attached to High School Musical next week?

Official Plot Synopsis: From the Academy Award®-nominated team of director Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc.) and co-director Bob Peterson comes Up, a comedic adventure taking off (and lifting spirits) in summer 2009. Carl Fredricksen spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest. But at age 78, life seems to have passed him by, until a twist of fate, and a persistent 8-year old Wilderness Explorer named Russell, gives him a new lease on life. Up takes audiences on a thrilling journey where the unlikely pair encounter wild terrain, unexpected villains and jungle creatures. When seeking adventure next summer — look Up.

Up hits theaters on May 29th 2009.

  • I still expect a trailer to premiere with Bolt. HSM 3 isn't in 3D...
  • I do wish more would be released besides this image which I've seen for months...

why wouldnt I see this? it's pixar. im there.
  • Wall-E Plays Pong
Were you there at Comic-Con when Pete Doctor showed some footage Peter? I admit, there's hardly anything the public has been shown about this film, but that footage was enough to excite me (especially the scene of the balloons flying past the window creating a kalidoscope of colors in the apartment room). So far the stuff shown has a much more peaceful, slow feel to it, which will be interesting to see if it carries over through the whole film.

Also, the wacky sidekicks Carl F. looks to pick up following him up a mountain in the concept art looked awesome, (besides Russel, that fat dog and one weird looking bird.) The strangest thing for me is the art style. It's quite geometric; you can see blocky plants and architecture like. Even Carl's ears and jawline are very square I believe. Contrasts well with Russel's general egg shape though.
  • WALL-E: The footage was good, but not great. It didn't nearly excite me as much as the WALL-E footage did the previous year, or Ratatouille did at WonderCon the year before that.
  • Wall•E Plays Pong
I can understand that. There certainly was more footage of Wall-E the year before though, and that was more finished than what was shown this year. I'd say this was more of a tease than ever before. The house escape via balloons is before the real adventure starts in the story, so I imagine there will be a ton of surprises once Carl reaches the jungle.

This makes me think of the generally good job Pixar has done in concealing their films from the public in the past couple years. Maybe because they don't have to shoot on location they can keep secrets "in house" better, but even looking at their trailers, the only hint of the obese humans in Wall-E was shown as a brief glimpse of the captain. Most of the second/third acts upon the Axiom were kept under wraps, which was nice to see.

Thinking of a live action movie like the Dark Knight, huge spoilers were revealed in the trailers. We all knew Batman would swerve out of the way on the batpod to avoid the Joker thanks to trailer one, so no tension was there when the film came up. It was a tense action sequence, but much of the intensity was lost as batman barrels towards the Joker when I knew how it was going to end. (Even if I could easily guess he would not have killed the Joker, I still wouldn't want to know how he aborted that situation with the wiping out on the concrete, but I still want to watch the main trailers for a film). We all knew the hospital would eventually explode, and even the awesome shot of Batman jumping off the Hong Kong skyscraper was revealed. (Thankfully Two-Face and Gordon's "death"/Rachel's death were concealed however). Even bigger spoilers were revealed in the trailers for Spidey 3. There was a shot of Harry dead in the arms of Peter and Mary Jane, and even the disfigured face.

For me, the Up footage was enough to satisfy my curiosity about where this film was going, and vague enough to get the wheels churning imagining what cool stuff lies ahead.

I'm shocked that every year people have doubts about the next Pixar film. Yes, their movies are unconventional and hard to encapsulate in a synopsis a year out, but have they failed us yet? Have faith people...
