Don Cheadle Replaces Terrence Howard in Iron Man 2

It has always bothered me when a new actor is brought in to replace another actor who has already been established as a franchise character. I don’t think I’m alone in this viewpoint. The first time I noticed this occurrence was when I was a child and Sarah Chalke replaced Alicia Goranson as Becky (otherwise known as the “Two Beckys”). Sometimes the situation is forced upon a movie studio, like with Richard Harris’ untimely passing, which forced Warner Bros to recast Michael Gambon as Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series of films. But other times it just comes down to a disagreement over money. And so appears to be the case with Iron Man 2.

Marvel Studios has hired Don Cheadle to replace Terrence Howard in the upcoming Iron Man sequel. Cheadle will play Jim Rhodes, Tony Stark’s best friend and future War Machine. Director Jon Favreau has made numerous hints that War Machine may play a part in the second film. The Hollywood Reporter’s sources claim it was a conflict due to financial differences. Earlier this year, it was widely speculated that Marvel was trying to low ball Favreau with an offer not much higher than his initial payday for the first film. It is not unusual for salaries to double for a sequel, especially when the first film outperformed to the level that Iron Man had. But from what I’ve heard, Marvel believes the superhero characters themselves are the real stars, and some have said that the company is being thrifty in their negotiations for their future projects.

Most people will agree, Howard and Downey Jr had incredible chemistry. Who knows if Cheadle will be able to reproduce the same magic in the sequel. That said, it is difficult to be angry with a a-level actor like Cheadle coming in for the assist.

Discuss: How do you feel about Don Cheadle replacing Terrance Howard as Jim Rhodes/War Machine?

crazy just saw this at the hollwood reporter websiter

Howard sounded so gung ho about suiting up as War Machine. Its hard for me to believe that Cheadle is cheaper than Howard. It seems Cheadle is more well known. But whatever, I actually like Cheadle better.

    This is terrible move.

Leave it to Marvel to make such a decision and allow Howard to leave the franchise.

Tom Hanks is an A-Lister too, but that doesn't mean he can play a superhero or hero-turned-villian in a major movie story arc.

This, along with the Punisher and Wolverine movies, is the beginning of the end for Marvel. Folks, you've already seen the best Marvel movie ever, whether you believe it was Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, X-Men 2, or Iron Man.

This will disappoint a lot of fans. The movie will still make lots of $ but won't follow the first movie very well.

    Shame on you, Marvel Studios.

Uh-oh, bad news for Don Cheadle's character - he's setting up to be offed, Maggie Gyllenhall style.
  • Brent
Sad day. Terrence Howard was awesome, who knows how Cheadle will do. Congrats Marvel, you threw out one of the best parts of Iron Man.
  • Derek
    Wtf.
  • Bill
And it all goes downhill from here.
  • Ghost
I'm not a fan of Howard so I'm down.
  • spoilerkid
this is the stupidest shit ever its like putting clay aiken as a woman rapist that suxx man isnt don cheadle short man im so pissed off wy marvel wy did u have to do that!!!!!!!!!!
  • south texas terror
I like cheadle but it just doesnt fit. I hope they prove me wrong.
  • GregoryV
Honestly, I though Howard's performance in Iron Man was unbelievable. So I really don't have a problem with Cheadle as replacement but I'm sure the audience is going to watch him very closely. Cheadle, keep your game up.
  • setting up to be offed, Maggie Gyllenhall style.
  • Palmer
Oh god please tell me that this is just a rumor gone wrong.
  • WTF?
  • emily
    I do not approve!
  • It's disappointing, especially if it was Marvel lowballing him but it certainly isn't a deal breaker. Iron Man was a great first flick and with Downey and Favreau on board the 2nd one should be just as great.
  • StarBlazer101
Replace an A list actor with an A+ list actor? mhmmmmm Doesn't sound so bad.
  • spoilerkid
    this is b.s.
  • I thought Terrence Howard was miscast in Iron Man. Glad to see someone with more caliber filling his shoes. Though I'm still unclear as to why that character needed to be in the movie in the first place. I'm probably missing some giant piece of Iron Man lore.
  • Craig D.
This sounds so bizarre that I thought it was a joke when I first read it, and I had to Google it to see if other websites were confirming it. Putting aside his acting talent, does anyone honestly think Cheadle is right for this role? Howard wasn't perfect casting, but he's infinitely more appropriate for the part. Sounds to me like a producer said, "Talented actor? Black? You got the job." It's funny how the first movie made Marvel a metric fuckton of money and they're pinching pennies over actor salaries.
  • M&Co
Should have been Eddie Murphy, that way he could have played Tony Stark, Mandarin, Pepper Potts and Stark's sassy grandma.

Would have saved the studio millions.
  • J. Luna
Worked for the Dark Knight. Let's wait and see.
  • Brian G
I'm cool with Cheadle replacing Howard, but what I want to know is... where did that pic of War Machine come from? Is that official pre-viz or what? Looks pretty cool, whatever it is!
  • Definitely not seeing Iron Man 2 opening week now. How can you get rid of Terrence Howard?! Cheadle is NO War Machine.
  • Ganaesh D.
    Not cool, man.
Definitely not cool at all. This is a dick move by Marvel. A part of me hopes that this turns out to be a rumour, but I have a feeling this is already set in stone. Damn idiots.
  • th0ught
    @Brian G

    It's not official. It's a fan photoshop.
  • I liked Terrence fine in the first film but really, nobody outside of comic book fans who knew him as "the guy who becomes War Machine" felt any real connection to him.

His role wasn't as large as most people probably would want to admit. Aside from the scene where he was talking to Tony over the headset, nothing else he did in the movie was really memorable, in terms of what it meant to the story. I'm not saying Terrence did a bad job but it wasn't a very large role and so replacing that sort of person (especially if you're putting in an actor who is as-talented) is not that big of a deal.
  • Reggie
Terrance was great. I love Don Cheadle...but I just can't fathom him in the part. Terrance Howard and Robert Downey Jr. had a certain friend-chemistry on screen. I just don't see that with Cheadle for some reason.
  • sam
i hate terrence howard and love don cheadle, therefore this is win-win
  • mth785
Cheadle is a very talented actor, he just doesn't fit my idea of the character.
  • tyler
howard was/is horrible. cheadle's a little bit better. i honestly have no idea who i'd pick for this role.
  • D
Terrance and Robert had good chemistry, why mess with a good thing?
  • spoilerkid
no cheadle suxx hes to serious nd tight how can he be iron man @sam no its not a win win ok!!!!
  • Tommy Metropolis
    DAMN. howard is perfect
  • spoilerkid
sorry i meant war machine CHEADLE CANNOT BE WAR MARCHINE THATS A FACT!!!!!!
  • helicopters
kind of a bummer, i thought downey jr. and howard had some good chemistry.
  • Mel
This is kinda shocking. Terrence Howard seemed perfect for the part and what little material they gave him to work with in the first one he handled perfectly so I was looking forward to seeing him getting a bigger role this time around. I like Don Cheadle but I thought they had the casting right the first time around, why not bring that back even if it does cost a little extra? This is a bit disappointing.
  • Oi Vey
    @ Spoilerkid

So you said that Chedle can't be War Machine and that's a fact, right? Well, it's not because he's ummm... he's going to play him.
  • @ Tyler Hynes

as if this dude isn't going opening weekend.

Howard was great; but Cheadle's awesome. as for Cheadle being too uptight and straight - check him out in Boogie Nights and the Ocean flicks (but, ignore the accent). If he bulks up a bit, I can see this no diff.

And let's face it - either way, we're all going opening weekend! im psyched
  • Chee_Kno
i can't believe how cheap Marvel is being especially with how much iron man made and how much more the sequel is going to make
  • Duval
a sidekick? come on cheadle you're above this.
  • orange cinema
if they're attitude truly is "the characters are what people come to see" then marvel isn't as smart as i thought. does anybody honestly believe this next spiderman would do as well if tobey wasn't in it? come on, be honest.

of course i love cheadles, but i love continuity even more. and i don't see DC in the role the way that howard owned it. especially his bulkiness would've been nice to transfer into war machine.
  • 790
This is just plain greed on the part of Marvel and Cheadle....

    Lame.
  • NO THANKS
What the fuck? Bring back Terrance Howard!

MARVEL WE KNOW YOU'RE READING THIS!!!!
  • Captain Awesome
    lol @ M&Co's comment
  • Aeghast
@ Harry Lime: you got it right ; )
  • Chris
Howard looks better to me, matches it better. Bah. Oh well, I guess.
  • Mr. B
I liked Howard. The only problem I see with Cheadle is that he typically does not pull off Military Officer very well but otherwise I think stuff happens.
  • Mikey
I understand if you don't believe Howard was great as Rhodes in Iron Man, and that you love Cheadle over Howard's movies, because it's very understandable.

Howard was just OK in Iron Man, and Cheadle is known for being a much better actor than the now-former Jim Rhodes. Howard could have been better in Iron Man, he's not exactly an exceptional talent.

But, the crucial aspect is CHEMISTRY. Howard and Downey Jr. had incredible chemistry together! No matter how bad Howard was, the scenes between him and Downey Jr. were priceless, especially the scene with the hotties in the plane as Rhodes finally loosens up.

Can you really imagine Cheadle in this role? Yes.

Can he sustain the same chemistry. and not confuse the general audience who doesn't read sites like /Film, AICN, or IGN, or follow casting movie news and comic books story arcs like we do?

Absolutely Not. People will be confused.

Also - Stop comparing this to The Dark Knight. Rachel Dawes was a character created by Nolan and Co. designed to utilize a female role in the Batman movies without using another Vicki Vale.

Rhodes is an ally-turned-villian who plays a major role in the comic book story arc. This is not the same thing at all.

We're now living in a post-Dark Knight era, where superhero movies need to be nearly perfect and above and beyond to please audiences, and taking Howard out of Iron Man 2 isn't a good start.

Not to mention, Favreau is being rushed to finish by 2010, while DC is allowing Nolan to vacation in the Bahamas for the next six months.

God Speed, Marvel Studies. Your finest movies have already been made.
  • marz
i agree,i like cheadle as an atcor but for the part that howard already started,he just doesn't seem like the type that would continue the flow.howard has that playboy swagger that downey jr. has especialy in that airplane scene where they're watching the girls dance.plus, howard has that comedic sidekick thing going for him.iv'e seen cheadle be funny in the oceans movies but theres different levels of funny.i'm sorry, but thats like re-casting kirsten dunst's character and using sarah michelle geller in spider-man.and yeah, they need to stop being cheap.didn't they learn when the writters decided to strike.what would happen if actors started doing the same??!! i was also thinkn...maybe will smith would have been a good replacement seeing that howards character was going to get more screen time being war machine but i think smith would have stolen a few scenes.
