It’s been a while since we’ve gotten a concrete update on Darren Aronofsky’s The Fighter, the real-life story of boxer “Irish” Micky Ward’s (to be played by Mark Wahlberg) unlikely road to the world lightweight title. His Rocky-like rise was guided by half-brother Dicky (Brad Pitt), a boxer-turned-trainer who rebounded in life after nearly being KO’d by drugs and crime. When we talked with director Darren Aronofsky last month, we got the impression that The Fighter might not be happening. It wasn’t anything Aronofsky said in particular, but what he didn’t say, and how he said it

“We have a beautiful screenplay. It’s based on, you probably know, Mickey Ward. It’s a great great project. As I told you I love sports movies. Rudy and Chariots of Fire are some of my favorite films. Fighter is a great script. Scott Silver wrote it. He’s the guy who wrote Eight Mile. So we have a great script, we’re just trying to cast it and try and figure out how it’s going to get made,” said Aronofsky, later adding: “Mark is training. Mark’s totally gung-ho” … “It’s been in development so long there’s a lot of money against it already. They’re trying to figure that out but I’m ready to go on it.”

Scott Silver is just the last on the long list of writers who have done work on the project. An older screenplay draft I have lists four writers: Paul Tamasy, Eric Johnson, Lewis Colick and Paul Attanasio. So when Aronofsky says “there’s a lot of money against it already” he means that Paramount has dished out a lot of money in the development of the film

Wahlberg told MTV that an October shoot was planned, but that is no longer the case. It doesn’t sound good but Wahlberg isn’t giving up. He’s been training for the role for almost two years. The actor tells Coming Soon:

“I’m so focused on “Fighter” and that’s not even happening so it’s all depressing. I’m just looking for the next thing. I’m always looking for the next thing. I’ve done three or four movies since I’ve been training for Fighter,” Wahlberg said, later adding: “They finally got the green light, now we have to figure out the cast thing. I’m going to meet with Darren Aronofsky on Tuesday in New York so we’ll see.”

Am I the only one confused about what he jsut said? At first he says it isn’t happening, then five seconds later says that it got a greenlight, they just need to figure out casting and he’s meeting with Darren this week. The actor went on to say how he could “train for another six months and look like a world class fighter” giving the project more realism than probably any other Hollywood boxing project to date. Sounds like a case of mixed signals to me.

But what exactly is the casting situation that Wahlberg is referring to? The Playlist just spoke with Aronofsky at the New York Film Festival, and the director reluctantly admitted that Brad Pitt is no longer involved with the project.

“We’re having some problems casting it,” Aronofsky said. “We’ll see what happens.”

Doesn’t exactly sound promising does it? Pitt joined the project last year, replacing Matt Damon, who had become too busy with other projects. And I’m willing to bet that Damon’s slate hasn’t cleared up much in the last 13 months. Ward is a key role with certain talent requirements. And from what I was told, Aronofsky is currently working to develop Robocop for MGM. But don’t count The Fighter out just yet.

I have it on good authority that location supervisions from Paramount have been scouting out locations in Lowell Massachusetts over the last few weeks. They have been visiting bars, taverns and local gyms. So the big question is, why would they be doing location scouts if the film isn’t moving forward? There is so much good buzz about the script, and with Aronofsky’s The Wrestler garnering so much attention and even award buzz, you would think that Aronofsky would have his pick of talent for the upcoming project. You would also think that Paramount would be eager to push this film into production no matter how much money the film has racked up in development so far…

• This is the SECOND Aronofsky movie (first was The Fountain) Pitt's bailed out on, both times practically at the last minute! What the fuck is Pitt's problem?? If I were Aronofsky, I'd never again cast Pitt in anything, I'd ban him from even setting foot on my set!
• orange cinema
wait, where does he say pitt is out? i did google searches too, but can't find anything. i was looking forward to DA, pitt & wahlberg together on this one.
• orange: Aronofsky told The Playlist that Pitt is out
• GregoryV
WTF? Darren Aronofsky is a genius. I was looking forward to see Pitt in an Aronofsky film since he walked off The Fountain, which was brilliant.
• Don't blame Pitt
How is Pitt to blame for this? The Fighter was originally scheduled to begin shooting Sept/Oct '08. Everyone was on board. Then this summer the internet is buzzing with word Aronofsky is being wooed for Robocop. It was widely known that MGM wanted to start work on Robo in early Fall '08, the same time The Fighter is to begin. In the meantime, Tarantino is flying to Europe to get Pitt on board for Inglorious Basterds. Both Aronofsky and Pitt decide to take on new projects causing The Fighter to be pushed back once again. As soon as this went down I knew it was going to be a stretch for the stars to align perfectly to come up with a new start date that works for all three (Aronofskly, Pitt, and Wahlberg.) Pitt didn't make Aronofsky take on Robocop. Pitt didn't bail last minute any more than Darren did. The only one who in the end stuck to the original timeline is Wahlberg.
• May
Pitt burned Aranofsky twice
• Jack II
I just saw The Wrestler at the NYC film festival and it was brilliant. I am sure it will be a huge contender come awards season, not to mention the film already winning the Gold Lion. I am confident Darren will have his share of talent lining up once this film gets around a little more...

But man, what a flick...
• orange cinema
cool (actually bummer) but thanks peter.
• orange cinema
i think i was hoping it was just speculation, cuz i wanted the 3 to work together BAD!
• @Dont' blame Pitt... I can't find anything online that said MGM was going to start shooting Robocop this fall, and even if they did, Aronofsky and Wahlberg were already committed to The Fighter, it's one this to force Darren to change his schedule, it's another to change his AND Wahlberg's. As far as I knew, Aronofsky was going full steam ahead with The Fighter and Robocop would've been next.

Robocop isn't going to be released until 2010, giving Aronofsky time to do both (might be tight but it's possible).
• Rayt Stanz
Wahlberg said back in June or July that Pitt wasn't likely to be attached. Not sure what the hold up with replacing him is.
• I want to be clear. Aronofsky is not filming Robocop this fall. He said that after he returned from Toroto in September that he would begin to develop a story/script with his team at Protozoa. Who knows when that script will be finished.
• Not Brad's fault
How is this Brad's fault? DarrenA took on Robocop, a huge project, and The Fighter went on his back burner. Brad was ready to go this fall, DarrenA has been concentrating on preparations for RC, the original production schedule fell apart. Brad is now in IB with QuentinT. Only one still free is MarkW, DarrenA might be able to squeeze this in but who knows. No blame for anyone is involved.
• helicopters
pitt gets cold feet on the fountain, then this? jesus christ, darren really should just stop bothering with him, he just ends up getting fucked over.
• Don'tBlamePitt
You can't blame Pitt for bailing on Aronofsky again. Pitt's been hearing "any day now" on "Fighter" for the better part of a year. He was set to start training this summer while waiting for Jolie to give birth and then found out the movie wasn't happening. Even Aronofsky signed up to the "Robocop" reboot for 2009. Pitt had cleared his slate to do "Fighter" in the fall of this year. You can't blame the guy for dropping out when even the director doesn't know when the movie is going to film. So what was Pitt supposed to do - not work until Aronofsky got his act together? It's the same crap that happened with "The Fountain" when Aronofsky started dinking around with the script that Pitt had approved. Furthermore, Pitt took on the role as a favor to Damon and Aronofsky. The least Aronofsky could have done was had the movie ready to go when Pitt was told it would start shooting. Tarantino came along with a better offer. C'est la vie.

So it's not like Pitt wasn't willing, able and ready. If you're going to blame someone blame Wahlberg and M. Night Shyamalan for that clunker they put out in the spring. Rumors were rife that Paramount got skittish that Wahlberg couldn't open a film - even with Pitt in a supporting role. Wait to see what happens with "The Lovely Bones". If that goes down the toilet, too, then I wouldn't be surprised to see Paramount back out of "The Fighter" completely.
• Nick
Definitely sucks Pitt bailed again. However, his replacement in The Fountain turned out to be way better for the part in my eyes. So maybe this will lead to yet another great Aronofsky pairing.
• May
Screw this project anyway. Noah sounds way more exciting. I could care less about another boxing movie.
• Sami
Am as disappointed as everyone else, was really looking forward to this pairing of Wahlberg and Pitt.

I also read a couple of articles over the summer which stated that Aronofsky's next project would be RoboCop, for release next year due to the success of Ironman.

The fact that Pitt waited till the last minute to sign on to Tarantino's film shows that he didn't believe they would be starting last Summer.
• Jules
"The Fighter" never had it's financing in place to name a start date. They floated Brad's name, with his agreement, to try to get $$$$. It didn't happen and they can't afford him with what they on hand to cast now. This is further complicated by Angelina talking on "Salt" at the end of February so there is no way Brad can wedge in another project before next Summer when he would likely want to be off anyway.

It's not Brad's problem the financing isn't nailed down for "Fighter".
• Don't blame Pitt
Enrique, I went back to check and I was wrong there was never confirmation, but only assumption due to MGM wanting to fast track it for 2010, that Robocop was to begin this Fall. One thing you wrote however caught my eye

"Aronofsky and Wahlberg were already committed to The Fighter, it’s one this to force Darren to change his schedule, it’s another to change his AND Wahlberg’s."

Isn't this what Damon did? Variety originally reported the film was to be fast-tracked with a projected start in summer 2007. In September 2007 Variety confirms Damon was out. Damon, like Pitt, forced both Darren and Mark to change their schedules. I don't remember any cries that Damon bailed. What's the real reason Damon dropped out of The Fighter? He got an ultimatum from his wife

"[Luciana asked me] to take a break from work. She saw a pile of scripts, and when I told her they were the movies I was supposed to shoot in the fall, she asked me if I still wanted to be her husband."

This was reported in October 2007. I'm not bagging on the man for choosing homelife over a film but The Fighter no longer became a priority. Obviously the same can be said for Pitt. I personally don't like double standards.
• Sami
Pitt is not to blame!

The Hollywoodreporter, (July 24th) mentioned the fast tracking of Robocop. Aronofsky had just finished The Wrestler apparently.
It also stated that the impending SAG "strife", delayed green-lighting and scheduling had led to MGM wooing him to prepare and fast track RoboCop.
• Don't blame Pitt
Jules thanks for the info on Salt. Last I heard Jolie was thinking of not doing it. Good to hear she's a go. There's no way Pitt, even if the $$$ was there but if what you say is true and it is not, could do both IG and The Fighter. Pitt has said he and the Mrs. don't work at the same time. Like Damon, Pitt is putting homelife before films. I say good for both of them but I have a feeling Pitt will be called a pussy while Damon gets a slap on the back.
• I dont blame Pitt, but am pissed he wont be in it... The Wrestler was awesome (I was also at the NYFF screening last night).

I wonder is there any chance Pitt could get back in if timing works out? It is at Par and Pitt has a great relationship with them since Brad Grey runs it... I know Paramount is happy to continue working with people like Pitt, Fincher (though well see if there are any more battles with Button), Scorsese, etc. in the future...
• whsmith
"The Fighter" a story about a down on his luck boxer?... call me crazy but this sounds kind of familiar to another movie coming out this year... by Darren Aronfsky.
• IG
What's Pitt's problem with Arronofsky. Hopefully this will turn out for the best, like the Fountain, which I loved.
• It'sNotAboutMoney
One other thing - about Jolie doing "Salt". She told the foreign press at a pressc con for "Changeling" at the NY Film Festival that after giving birth to twins and having 6 kids to take care of she discussed with Pitt whether she should go back to work at all. She said it will have been over year since she worked and she just questioned whether she still wanted to do it. At this point I really think she'd rather be home with her kids and Brad, but she said that he encouraged her to continue acting because "it's a part of her, too". So she's doing "Salt". I think it probably helps that she's worked with Philip Noyce before, too.
• It'sNotTheMoney
I find the notion that Pitt wouldn't do "The Fighter" because the payday isn't big enough to be ridiculous. At this point in his career he's doing more artistic films than big payday films. If you look at the projects he's taken on since he separated from Aniston - Babel, The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, Oceans 13, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Burn After Reading, Tree of Life and now Inglorious Bastards - then you'll see 3 movies that were big paydays (O13, CCOBB, IG). The rest he took a bloodbath on. He took $1MIL as salary, with no backend, on Babel, TAOJJBTCRB, TOL and rumored at about $3MIL for BAR. He even told Larry King last winter that he'd been taking on roles that actually cost him money to take.

And if you look at what happened with "State of Play," he bailed on a bad script when Universal wanted to proceed during the writers strike. He had script approval and then Universal turned around and stabbed him in the back by telling Variety that he'd broken a play or pay contract when he had NOT approved the script they wanted to shoot. That was a guaranteed $20MIL payday he walked away from. And then he turned around and signed up to replace Heath Ledger in Terrence Malick's "Tree of Life" - which he did for pennies and even helped finance the film through his Plan B production company. So obviously money is NOT the issue with Pitt.
• JFK
The problem is he's making a movie starring Mark Wahlberg.
• Harry Lime
Motherfucking Brad Pitt. I will avenge you, Darren...
• Lowell Fight Club
You have it on good authority location scouts have been in Lowell? I'll confirm it for you. From the sports pages of the town newspaper where Ward grew up.

http://www.thesunblog.com/sports/archives/2008/...

If Paramount isn't going to shoot the film, why are they sending location scouts out?
• Biglefthook
I wrote a book, titled "Johnny Bad Ass" that I had copyrighted fifteen years ago,

I read the book that this story is based on.

I better not find one similiar character, subplot...etc or I'll sue everyone
• kim
Brad would be okay in the role, but I'm sure they could find someone to take his place who isn't such a pretty boy. Dicky isn't exactly his spitting image. I think a local guy would be a better choice for this role.
• Sami
Darren Aronofsky spills the truth at last:

"I have to bring up Brad Pitt. I just heard that he was just taken off the cast list for The Fighter. Is that true?

That was like eight months ago. [Laughs] No, they just reported it now. He was never 'in,' he was just reading the script. They reported that he was 'in,' and he wasn't-now they're reported he's out eight months later, and he's not. It's just because Mark Wahlberg was on a press-line and they asked him whether or not Brad Pitt was doing it [The Fighter], and he said 'no.' But this is all old news. It's all hype. The Fighter is a great script. It's developing, but I don't know what's going to happen with it yet."

• correct
the project took a major hit when damon became unavailable, so there really isnt too much hope for it to be as big a success as it would have been. and now that pitt is out, who knows.
• Sami
"Correct"
Pitt was never in!

Aronofsky admitted it in December 08, see above immediate article.
• HAHAHAHA
What does a Brooklyn beach-bred NYC Russian hemmorage know about the psychology of some guy from Lowell, Mass? Sorry, Cambridge ain't Lowell, and the answer is none. As much as the Hasty Puddings crowd would like people to think they earned some sort of stripes there. Why not just glue in some Pi/Requium abstraction of someone washing a pill down with a faucetfull of water, and everyone will cream their jeans. Well, everyone but me. WRONG director, WRONG project. Go for it, represent wrestlers (look at the history, Long Island and NYC). But if Mr. Darren Aronofsky wants to stake a claim for defining some hard-core, REAL dude (yeah, I'm sure he would love your ironic stache) from a blue-collar town in Mass, thats where I laugh in his face. Good luck dude. It's your own career funeral.
• HAHAH
PS. Word is that it's not that Damon was unavailable, but that Pitt was interested in the project. Thus... just throw Damon under the bus and push him out. What the hell. That's what Hollywood says, Pitt has better numbers. I will be a lot happier when this "auteur" posier's career is over.
• king
they should make a movie about antonio " tono" diaz who beat mickey ward and lost to shane mosley and antonio margarito and took a three year lay off and came back to win a 12 round victory to get the wbo latino title and has 7 wins in a row now thats a movie
• Brian
I'm Brian and i live in the Lowell Highlands. 538 Westford Street to be exact. In my own opinion this movie needs to get made. think about the story line here. You have the tough Irish guy from Lowell, Ma with everything pitted against him, and he makes it to the big time. You name me a movie where someone starts off from the bottom and makes it too the top and it wasn't a box office hit. The city of Lowell alone will fuel the fire for this production. Not to mention when was the last time lowell was put on the map for anything besides the textile museum and the red sox single A team the Spinners. Who needs brad pitt anyway, we got bale on board. Plus that wahlberg fella aint no pushover niether. Signed , a big new england sports fan who will see this movie 10 times.
• M. Matte
Im form Lowell, Ma...The just finished filming "The Fighter" this last weekend. Christian Bales playing Dickie Ecklund....the movies gonna blow, they made Lowell out to look like a crack town full of crime. They came in took over, incovienced everyone with their snotty attitudes, and blew out..hope that company never films in Lowell again....They're complete assholes.
• Denny D
Wahlberg shows some real talent ---but his choice of projects is boring.

Wish he had more daring in the career direction department.
