Watchmen: Running Time, New Trailer and Sequel Denial

Twenty-five minutes of Watchmen was screened for select press in Los Angeles today. I couldn’t make the trip (I’m taking a break from traveling for a while), but our friends at FirstShowing were in attendance. Here are some of the news highlights:

  • The current running time is 2 hours and 43 minutes, and Zack Snyder doesn’t expect it to get much shorter. Wow, that’s even longer than I expected it would be.
  • Snyder said he would not be involved with a prequel/sequel if Warner Bros stupidly decided to make one. But the real question is, would Warner Bros be stupid enough to make one?
  • The next movie trailer will be attached to Quantum of Solace, which hits theaters in the US on November 14th 2008. Mark it on your calendar!

Collider has a better description of the footage screened.

    will it be released...ever?
  • Captain Awesome
    very, very positive.
  • Alec
Really happy news after all the lawsuit business we've been hearing lately.
    Snyder, make us proud!
  • Holy Shit! (Matt)
Sounds like it's coming along nicely. Alex should really try to sell it more though. Warner Bros moneyhat!
  • hmm 2h43m.. I like that
  • Agent J
    Nice. Lets go Watchmen!
  • emily
    exciting!!
  • does it matter
    My friend went, fucking jealous.
  • Nish
I'm still not convinced that the film will really capture the essence of the comic, especially given Hollywood's treatment of the Moore classic, LoEG. But at 2h43min, its sounds like it'll get enough in to be a good movie.
  • I never thought I'd say this, but I'm actually really looking forward to a Watchmen movie. There is no way in hell that they will be able to cram even half of the book into 2 hours and 43 minutes but there is so many great things about the book that I actually think this could be something really special. Whenever Moore and everyone say that this story is unfilmable I really think that sells the book short.

March couldn't get here any faster.
  • Paul
Cool that it's so long. It will probably screw up the box-office, but it might save the film.
  • Josh
Honestly... 2 hours and 43 minutes is nothing. With how good the freaking teaser trailer looked, I would sit through 4 or 5 hours of that movie.
  • Presto117
    god, i can't wait...

and i didn't expect the origin of dr. manhattan to sound that good, especially considering it's one of the most complex parts of the book, with all the back and forth stuff going on.

    i'm friggin' stoked.

heck, i'll even take quantum of solace right now just so i could see the new trailer.
  • Joe
Hrm. Sounds promising. Must investigate further.
  • Gary
I think this is going to be better than the Dark Knight.
  • So..... Why has Snyder taken the offensive to state no sequel already? I understand the lawsuit might get in the way but you would think WB would do anything int here power to milk more money. A sequel is the next step... Its sad, this movie will probably rule and it will be the only watchmen.... No trillogy no waiting for the next movie.... *sigh*
  • Oi Vey
okay, there was never a sequel Joe Smith. What's the point?
  • kitsune
Joe, you're clearly not a Watchmen fan. Snyder has taken the offensive because he has put all of the source material (in his opinion) into this movie. Doing a sequel would mean them having to create their own story and he's too much a Watchmen fan himself to ruin it by doing that.

That, plus I'm pretty sure he has too much respect for Alan Moore to do it.
  • Presto117
    @ Joe Smith

ummm, you've probably never read Watchmen and obviously have no idea on what it's about....

if you've ever actually read the book, you'd know that there is practically no way to make a sequal to Watchmen and if there was, it would be an absolute joke and lame attempt to make money.
  • Wow either of you be a bit more harsh? Sorry I haven't read the damn novel, and honestly if you wanna get fans INTO IT I would suggest you treat those who haven't read the story a little nicer. All i was TRYING to state was if its "SEQUEL WORTHY" that to keep going on with it. If it CAN NOT HAVE A SEQUEL then guess there's only going to be one film, but don't be an ass to someone just because they ask a general question. Don't take out your childhood aggressions on the internet dude, it does nothing for your ego.

IN ANY CASE, the movie looks good and besides these 2 duesh bags comments I'll probably end up picking it up at barnes and noble. So thanks for being a prick, hope you got your jollies off :)

    Joe,

The series itself is pretty well-contained. It's not something done like other comics like Spider-Man or Batman, where it goes on and on forever. It's graphic novel with a one-shot epic storyline.

If you get the chance check it out. DC is coming out with a re-edition hardcover of the graphic novel sometime in november for 40 bucks. The artwork was re-scanned from it's original sources and the colors were re-done digitally.
  • Captain Awesome
And by "sometime in november" I meant, "sometime in "October".

    ;)
  • Yep
    Joe Smith.. such a parasite.
