Now that Smallville is clearly coming to an end (I, like many others, gave up on the show a couple years ago, well after I should have), the CW is trying to plan for the future. Smallville executive producers Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson are teaming with McG to produce a pilot for The Graysons, based on pre-Batman days of Batman’s sidekick Robin. The show will follow Dick “DJ” Grayson, his family, first loves, and young rivals. The series will be set in modern times and will have a one-hour running time.

Not much else has been revealed at this time, but the nickname “DJ” doesn’t give me much hope. I wonder if the film will follow the Greysons as they perform in a traveling circus? Souders and Peterson claim to have an original take on the character. I seriously doubt a television series like this could even be interesting. The only reason Smallville works at all is the fact that Clark has superpowers. Who cares about Dick Grayson before he put on the tights? If they’re going to make a show about a family, why not just create something original?

And what’s with the fascination of seeing television shows with superheros before they become superheroes? Now that we’re living in a post Batman Begins world, I’d love to see a real superhero television show done right. I know I’ve said this before, but Daredevil would be a great television show because it could be part court room drama and part superhero adventure.

  • Maybe they're going with DJ because they don't want to have a family show full of "Dicks."
  • I think Peter is right, why should someone watch a TV-series about a sidekick setting place at time, he doesn't even has his sidekick-role? Dick Grayson is one of my favorite comic-characters, but without Batman, without the Teen Titans und without his life as Nightwing, that would just be an horrible and boring series. But the Daredevil-idea sounds great to me.
  • Years ago, before BATMAN BEGINS, the WB was kicking around a show called BRUCE WAYNE as a SMALLVILLE companion piece. The successful relaunch of Batman put the kibosh on that so they must have figured if they couldn't do Bats why not do Robin.

No. No. No. No. No. PLEASE GOD NO! This is a terrible terrible idea. Just the other day I was thanking the heavens that the CW doesn't own the rights to batman, or we'd have some monstrosity like "Gotham Shores" This week, the Joker comes to GOTHAM HIGH!!!

    NOOOOOOOOO.
  • This sounds pretty bad. I'm a big fan of the comic series SPIDER-MAN LOVES MARY JANE and it's Spider-Man told from the Mary Jane perspective and it plays out like a really great and funny teen drama and would be such a perfect fit for the CW.

    This show sounds awful.

a daredevil tv show on hbo is where it's at. that's the kind of thing a lot of fans want i'm sure...there's a lot to be said for the serial format of a tv show and how a superhero can be adapted for that...marvel studios need to spread their wings!

i guess this is kind of a good sign...if they want a tv show on robin it probably means nolan is ignoring him for thye movie-verse and this is another way for the wb to capitalise on his recognition...but i'd rather see a series based on bruce wayne between leaving gotham and showing up in that prison ra's finds him in in btman begins. that'd be cool.
  • Clint Barton
Let's all hope this doesn't happen...
  • D
cool idea. but i doubt itll be good. also. EFF "DJ". that's BS.
  • MP
I'd like to take this opportunity to defend Smallville. No, it's not high art or deep drama, but it's got plenty of Superman stuff to keep me interested. And I'd rather see a Green Arrow spinoff than The Graysons.
  • GregoryV
I rather see DC series, Gotham Central being explored versus Daredevil or The Graysons. Daredevil and The Graysons will go down like Bird of Prey.

Ultimately like the whole superhero-courtroom drama made for a weekly basis sounds awful. I just don't buy it as a stand alone TV series, maybe a reboot of the film, but not television.

The Graysons, well, I've wanted see the life of Dick Graysons, only if Batman was dead. Exploring his younger life sounds too perfect for teeny boppers TV.

Gotham Central, a series about struggling law enforcement working in the city where Batman takes all the action. Animosity towards Batman, now that's a series!
  • kheas
does anyone remember The Flash? That was a well made super hero series, a litttle campy at times, but well done. Why can't sopmeone do that again. We have the technology, we have the money...
  • GregoryV
    WB,

    GOTHAM CENTRAL.

That's it. Done. Now make it happen.

    Robin sucks.

Give me a new Batman series as good as Batman: The Animated Series. And don't ruin him like in The Batman series.

They should run a series based off the look and style from one of the shorts found in the Gotham Knight dvd.

Is it really that hard to come up with new show ideas with established characters?

AMAZON - A young Diana Prince exploring the world, dealing with teen angst and her super powers.

THE CORPORATION - Different teens being inducted to Gl Corp, they would be learning to work as a team, learn about their new found powers & deal with teen angst.

SHAZAM - While traveling to the Greek islands with his friends over spring break, Billy Batson, gets super powers from Greek gods. He has to go back to his regular life, learning to control his new found powers and how he can use them to deal with teen angst.

This show sounds awful! You know they will turn into another teen show and while teens need their targeted shows I don't think the typical teen is going to watch this, and how many fanboy/girls will be interested? I hope this gets buried in the bad ideas graveyard before it sees the light of day.
  • HalJordan
I think this would be sweet. I would watch it.
they could take a few different spins with this.
    could be cool.
  • I had an idea for a "Gotham City" t.v. show about the early years of well Batman and his team, just like "Smallville". But does this sounds like it could work? well see...
  • Mikey M
You obviously gave up on Smallville too quick. With Lana and Lex gone this year, it has hit a new creative energy.
  • Mando
I too must defend Smallville, I think you should give it another shot this season is really great and becoming an awesome Superman show
  • Prophecy_projectz
Balderdash. Its wasnt Lana and Lex's fault the show sucked (yes, I said it wasnt Lana's fault) but rather the execs at CW constant request for input of teen angst to the uninspired writers and show runners. If you look all across the board the shows characters are put in stupid plots. Its just you have some fans who favour certain "ships" than others.
The show has zero creativity right now. What has happened in the first two episodes that is so great? Lois and Clark's relationship is just as cliched as boring as Clark and Lanas. Instead of a poor man's dawson creek, you get a poor man's Moonlighting or....Lois and Clark (90s show).

As for this show. I dont think it will work but it will depend on thwe cast. CW as a network is all about making pre-packaged teen driven shows with good young looking people. They'll have to focus on teen aspect cause thats the network's bread and butter. Its why One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl are still on whereas as previous DC comic book shows like Birds of Prey and Mercey Reef died on arrival (granted those werent good anyway and poorly produced).
  • Anti-Septic
All signs point to this will suck. Smallville was able to play on the pre-teen Superman role not allowing all of Clarks powers to manifest. I am a fan of Smallville but even I am sick of Clark not being able to fly! What the Hell.

This just doesnt sound like a very good idea.
  • gah
You're so right about Daredevil. I would kill to see that.
  • Jeff W.
"And what’s with the fascination of seeing television shows with superheros before they become superheroes?" I couldn't agree more! I'm proud to say that I've never seen an episode of Smallville and don't intend to check it out until someone tells me that he's now Superman in every episode, fighting crime. Until then I'll watch my Adventures of Superman DVDs.
  • John L
OOOO! OOOOO! I got it! Make a show about Nightwing! Have an episode, maybe even just half of one showing him falling out with Batman, going out on his own, making a name for himself. Throw in some sweet mixed martial arts fighting to make up for powers, and I say you've got a sweet show on your hands!
Not this Graysons/DJ/BJ/BS. Like you said, they need to make a REAL superhero show! That's fine if they use someone C or D list like DareDevil or Green Arrow, or, as mentioned, Nightwing. Just no more of this "pre-interesting plots" crap.
  • Mando
    to Prophecy_projectz,

I never blamed the shows problems on Lana and Lex. I will actually miss Lex's presence a lot, but with Al and Miles gone the show seems to have taken a turn. Clark's at the Daily Planet, we're seeing his and Lois' feelings growing, and I personally think they have way better chemistry on screen. the fact that he traded in the flanel shirts for suit shirts alone is exciting for me. But both of the first episodes had great Superman-y moments. When he was carrying Tess out of the smoke and rubble, awesome moment. I'm not saying its flawless now, just promising.
  • Baron Von Cheddar
I used to enjoy Smallville but it has dragged its feet for too long. Every other character has a career, he dropped out of college and dicked around on the farm for 4 seasons. Other heroes are running around in full costume, he wants to wear his farm flannel to the Daily Planet. How many times has he lost and regained his powers? His memory? Lana?

    He's not a superhero, he's a burnout.

The writers are showing the burden of the "No Flights. No Tights" obligation. They try to make up for it by pulling out other DC heroes (including Supergirl) to keep us interested in a show about a purehearted farmboy who is also a dumbass. Its time to quit the unsubtle allusions to Superman's future and start giving it to the viewers.
  • ehhhhh,

I'm Okay with this show happening as long as other heroes make cameos, like on Smallville.

The show would be F*cking awesome if Christian Bale appeared as Batman.
  • destruct26
    1. Batman Forever
    2. Batman & Robin
    3. Birds of Prey
    1-3 = Crap
The Graysons, no matter how bad it may be when I see it, will most likely be GOLD compared to 1-3.
  • Blue Harper
Shouldn't it be titled ROBIN BEGINS?
