Saturday night in L.A., Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill rehearsed their stand-up acts for Judd Apatow’s Funny People in front of a live audience at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. Apatow was on hand to MC the event. Friend of Slashfilm, Andrew, emailed us the following report…

“For the past month, Apatow has hosted this event to test out material for his upcoming film. Apatow addressed the crowd—about 100 people—that this was the last rehearsal before the film started shooting this Monday. The lineup for the show was: Jonah Hill, Aubrey Plaza, Kevin James, Adam Sandler (he announced to the crowd that he would be playing in character for his 20-minute set), and Seth Rogen.

Throughout the show Apatow took movie pitches from the audience members.  One member of the audience pitched a road trip movie based on Sartre. The guy then said he traveled all the way from Salt Lake City to see the cast perform. Apatow quipped, ‘They’re going to find me dead after the show.’ Hill seemed the least experienced doing stand up, but still kept the crowd entertained. One of the highlights was a joke Rogen made about farting on airplanes. Apatow also suggested Sandler do a bit that he’d already done, leaving Adam to jab, ‘Some director you’re going to be.’ I would have liked to see Eric Bana do stand up. Otherwise, great night.”

Cool. If any of you guys were in the audience, let us know below. I’m looking forward to seeing Apatow head in a more adult direction with this feature, and I wonder if it will be thematically similar to the 2002 doc Comedian, a memorable study in showbiz neuroticism.

Discuss: What’s the worst stand-up comedy performance you’ve ever witnessed? My pick? Neil Hamburger, duh.

The worst standup I ever saw in person was Janeane Garofaolo(?) in Houston during the Ratatouille tour. I have reason to believe it was just a bad night for her though. Also, she had to follow Patton Oswalt.

i was there. let me make it clear. THESE GUYS ARE NOT FUNNY.

i Need TO TALK ABOUT RIGHTEOUS KILL AND HOW THE DIRECTOR, AVNET RUINED THE FILM. WHEN YOU BUILD CHARCTERS YOU NEED TO TELL A STROY ABOUT THEM. WHERE THEY ARE FROM, WHERE THEY LIVE NOW, AND WITH WHO. ASIDE FROM THE FACT THAT AT EVERY CRIME SCENE THERE ARE ONLY 5 PEOPLE, AND IT SEEMS THERE ARE ONLY FIVE PEOPLE IN THE NYPD, AVNET DOES BARELY ANYTHING DESCRIBING WHERE DENIRO AND PACINO COME FROM. YOU GET 8 SECONDS OF ENIRO BANGING THE CHICK ON THE COUCH. AND FIVE SECONDS OF ROOSTER EATING PASTA. THIS IS A DISGRACE AND A DISSERVICE.

7.2/ 10 - STAR POWER SAVES FILM. AVNET IS THE WORST DIRECTOR IN THE HISTORY OF FILM.
    THANKS,
  • Is Kevin James going to be in Funny People? I hope so. Him with good material/his own material is fantastic.

Thats just classic can't go wrong with those time honored classics.

"Some director you'll make, Don't make me come outta the booootha pah!"

Gajonka > WTF are you smoking????

Worst stand-up Ive ever seen - Pauly Shore, Melbourne. I loved that guys movies. I thought he was hilarious when i was a young teen. So i thought Id see him in australia when he came.... Basically was an hour of him telling everyone how much he hates his life because of the weasel, and is sick and tired of fans thinking thats how he acts. Well Ill tell you this Pauly shore - Your funny as the weasel, you'd be nowhere without the weasel, and standing around bitching and moaning about how it sucks to be famous is NOT funny.

    @JP

I saw Pauly do stand-up in Coconut Grove/Miami. But complaining about seeing Pauly is like complaining about getting herpes from a girl at Florida State. It's all part of it.
  • Hunter Stephenson's comment is hilarious.
  • gah
Kevin James is in the flick?

    fex,

    go do better.

I was in attendance. Energy was way down. Sandler didn't seem too into it, he kept repeating "Almost there." The same for Rogen, who had to go on after Sandler to his dismay. Apatow later commented that he did that because thats what happens in the movie. Kevin James was terrific, he did gain a lot of weight though, and his set was mostly in regards to that. Andrew is right about Jonah Hill being the least experienced, as he kept relying on his notes during the set, but I have to say he was the most into it. But overall the show was pretty good, and made me more excited for the movie.

As far as worst stand-up I've ever seen, I live in LA, so it changes almost every show I see, but I have to say Carlos Mencia blows my mind everytime with how bad he is.
  • Captain Awesome
Worst stand-up? The local open-mic. One of the most painful and embarassing 2 hours I ever had to dit through.

Worst celebrity stand-up? It's a toss-up between Pauly Shore or Dane Cook.
  • I'll occasionally drop in for the UCB theater's Tuesday night "Comedy Death Ray", which can be hit-or-miss, but never without a little surprise guest or two. About two months ago (or three), both Apatow and Jonah Hill made an appearance. It was Hill's first time doing stand-up and he was a little rough around the edges (from what I hear... My buddies were at this show, but I wasn't). I ended up going to the following week's show, and this time Seth Rogan dropped in along with Jonah Hill. Rogan said it was his first time doing stand up since high school and he admittedly wasn't that bad (just a lot of masturbation jokes).
  • Christopher Hoult
Worst standup - Margaret Cho in her Notorious C.H.O. show at the Edinburgh Fringe about 7 years ago. Confirmed all of the comedienne stereotypes, unfortunately.

George Lopez is just as bad as Mencia. Mencia needs be deported
  • Ever notice that Adam Sandler's movies are all the same...a trouble guy turning his life around. Just a thought...
  • I thought the show was great. I had to sit on the stage and it was super uncomfortable, but still a lot of fun. I wrote up a longer review of it on my blog if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the info guys. At least now I know Rogen showed up on the 27th. Never did see him arrive, only Sandler and Apatow. Sandler walked past us poor schlubs waiting in the standby line out on sidewalk(now THAT's doing stand up...what a joke THAT was: I stood alright, for five fucking hours). I said something profound like "hey good to see ya", Sandler replied in kind. A real Kodak moment.
    ::crickets::

So where was Rogen, the guy I stood around 5 hours for?

Some thirty standbys waited. And waited. And waited. Finally about four were allowed in after all the ticketholders showed up. I wasn't one of them naturally, as I was number 11. These "advance" tickets for both Apatow shows (Sept 19 and 27) seemed to have sold out before the UCB website ever posted the dates on their schedule. Fancy that. So the highlight of my evening was waiting around in line next to a couple guys named Gabe and Abe. (Seriously.) and being routinely herded to the curb by the theater sidewalk nazis.

While waiting next to a magazine stand I spied some rag with Rogen and "Porno" co-star Elizabeth Banks on the cover. So my boyz G and A and a group of girls in line and I managed to entertain ourselves for short while flipping through pages of a very bizarre Rogen/Banks period costume photoshoot.

After admiiting four people, theater reps sent the rest of us SROs packing with a "so very sorry, but there's no more room. NOW CLEAR THE SIDEWALK. GOODNIGHT." I asked if Rogen had arrived; theatre reps claimed to have no idea. Uh-huh.

So Ryan, if you were one of the four that made the grade, I hope it was worth the wait.

And Defamer Dudes, only pix obtained here were of chicken themed Birds restaraunt next door. Good thing I'm a chicken fan.

    Jewfrolly yours
    R.

worst standup was robin williams at the improv two or so years ago. he got on stage as a surprise to everyone (including the host) and it...was...terrible...i'm sure he was trying new stuff out, but it really was 20 minutes of pitiful junior high humor. fun to watch him though, i guess
  • Nice to hear they have finished. Funny People is one of my most anticipated comedies of this year.
