Green Lantern Aims For Spring 2009 Shoot

Our friends at FirstShowing caught up with producer Donald De Line, who revealed that a new draft of The Green Lantern has been turned in, and while nothing is “confirmed” they’re “gearing up to start shooting early spring.”

I have to admit that while I’ve read comics over the years, Lantern isn’t one of them. I’ve never found the character to be that interesting, but have a lot of friends who disagree. Our friends at Latino Review got their hands on the script a couple weeks ago, and El Mayimbe called it “one of the most solid first draft superhero screenplays EVER”. Talk about high praise. One thing is for sure, DC needs to bring their A game to compete with the onslaught of Marvel projects coming up.

Discuss: Are You Excited About The Green Lantern Movie?

  • Kevin
HELLS YEAH!!!! I hope it's as great as Latino Review says it is.
  • Captain Awesome
I hope it's good. I've disagreed with LR before many times. So I don't let their excitement dictate how it turns out.

I'm glad DC is taking it slow. Look what Nolan did to the comic film industry now. Everyone wants to "reboot" and have do-overs. I don't care how slow they roll these out. Just as long that they're well done.
  • BadWasabi
It got "greenlighted"! Hahahahaaa, I crack myself up.
  • Palmer
The script might be great, but whatever actor they get to play Hal Jordan (They better not the a 180 and have Guy, John, or Kyle in the role) better be able to deliver.
  • Ben
Meh... looks ok. For me it all really depends on the actors for this one. I definitely think that DC produces much better material than Marvel, but they just need to put out more movies. I think they should option Resistance: Fall of Man. They seem like a good video game-movie studio.
  • not really but maybe something can change my mind about a live action green lantern film.
  • David
I've been looking forward to a Green Lantern movie ever since i was a kid watching the Justice League. I hope that this movie is amazing...who should be green lantern? will smith? denzel? somebody help me out here
  • Jetpackman89
Yea, I'm glad DC has decided to make films of characters other than Batman or Superman (even though both are great) I can't wait to see how they will portray this character in a movie.

Green Lantern could work great as an epic and building trilogy. Hopefully they take the right direction and explore everything the green lantern mythos has to offer from hal jordan to oa and the guardians. The darwin cook New Frontier Hal Jordan story got me interesting Green Lantern again and I am very excited to see what will come of a movie Green Lantern.
  • Can't wait for the first teaser and final trailer(s).
  • orange cinema
I'll get excited if they do a hal Jordan story. Ignoring his role and starting with another lantern is just silly.
  • Can't wait for this one. Hal Jordan is a solid character and the mythos could make for some amazing cinema sci-fi if they choose to go that route.

If DC is going to tackle Marvel, this is one of the characters that MUST work. They can't fail and reboot like Superman. That was their mulligan.
  • wizardsyndrome
i don't think there are words to express my excitement for this movie...

If it doesn't start with Dark and Knight or star Heath Ledger, it will suck, as will all comic book movies from this point on.

Green Lantern is one of my favorite comic characters so I really hope they don't screw it up. I've always imagined the Emerald Dawn storyline as the perfect jumping off point for a movie.
  • DC is scaring me at the moment. I thought the JLA movie was dead, but the actors are still talking about their roles.

So DC, if you can't get all your ducks in their respective rows, what makes me think that you can pull off a superhero who uses willpower to create green forcefields and energy beams?
  • Captain Awesome
I would also love a well done Flash movie please :)

So El Mayimbe has an issue with a latino meth dealer in the script. Um, what the bollocks? Perpetuating a stereotype would insinuate that people think of latinos as meth dealers yet... as Mayimbe himself points out, most meth drug dealers are white. I myself had no association of latinos with meth. Hence, the script actually seems to be going against the grain by making the meth dealer a latino instead of a caucasian. This is an advancement of sorts, as we're now in a world where a latino can be any role, not just one that Edward James Olmos has done.

Yes, a latino meth dealer is not a positive image. So what? Are latinos only allowed to take on positive roles in cinema? Is El Mayimbe going to cry foul anytime a latino is portrayed as a villain or criminal? Was he picketing The Dark Knight, which had Det. Ramirez as a corrupt Gotham cop?

Of all the script critiques one can come up with, finding fault because a dead drug dealer happens to be latino strikes me as quite odd.

I know he has already stated he is not attached to this movie, but David Boreanaz (Angel, Bones) would be perfect as Hal Jordan.

I agree that they need to start with Hal, if they are going to do a trilogy, then they can get into some of the other Lanterns, but starting with anyone but Hal would be a monumental mistake.

    .....2 cents.
  • gah
How has this not happened yet? It's such a great untapped property. Anyway, NATHAN FILLION for Hal Jordan.
  • They definitely need to start with Hal Jordan and hopefully this turns out better than Superman did. I agree with the posts above, no matter how good the script they need to have somebody that can act and hold our attention play the lantern. No matter, I'll still go see it.
  • jj gonzo
FINALLY!!!!step up DC and catch up with MARVEL!!!!
  • HalJordan
    Hell Yessssssssssss.
that day cannot come soon enough.
I hope this film dosent get mainstreamed too much.

  • jordan
i think its good that WB is going a head Green Lantern it geting they need to get away from superman and batman thought i relly hope they can get batman 3 and they woud try doing what marvle is going with iron man keep it kimple fun and full of action with the green lantern
  • Nick Brown
Holy shit. Im so excited. If you don't like green lantern, pick up Green Lantern: Rebirth and all the SInestro Corps. War issues. AMAZING.
  • i wish i was directing this, but i do have faith in this script
  • Duval
another white superhero? come on. how about we go with an asian or hispanic guy.
  • JP
Good review, this movie's going to be tits if they get the right director and a perfect Hal. The new Batman films are being toted as the "Godfather" of comic book movies...I predict GL becoming the "Star Wars" (original trilogy only thank you) of comic book movies.

My only gripe is the reviewer's reasoning behind dropping a letter grade. Offended that a meth dealer is latino? Hilarious.
  • optimusprime
Im excited. I always liked the character from the cartoons.
  • ddy_blue
    it all depends right?!

like someone said up there the script might be good but we need to see the actors....

but i have no problems with it....green lantern is not your tipical hero but his ring is bad-ass....really cool powers!
  • Ry

Apparently you missed the Blade trilogy.
  • Eric R.
I am a little mix about it. Half of me is excited the other half is not. To be honest with you the only characters I've found decent enough to read about in the comics was Supes and Batman. All of the other characters weren't interesting enough. Marvel I found had very interesting characters that could stand alone in comics and when they came together electrified the story. Personally I think WB should get the Superman movie right first before they attempt another superhero. Batman is already established thanks in large part to Nolan. Look...when the DC animated cartoons are more intersting than the movies...well..that speaks for itself.
  • Hendo
I can't wait for this. I've read a lot of green lantern books so I'm really excited. Especially glad that it will be Hal. He is the first and the best. I think that this movie will really grow on people. Especially if they do a trilogy. Green Lantern is more Sci-Fi than it is anything else when you really get at it. The script seems to be solid based on what I've read and if they really want to go for it, the scope of a trilogy could be HUGE as in Star Wars proportions
  • Schu
I'll take Green Lantern, but only if it's Hal Jordan. Hal Jordan rocks.
  • Finally a DC movie that isn't Superman or Batman, not that I don't have a problem with them, Yeah I kinda agree with Peter or sort of, at first I didn't find Green Lantern that interesting either, but I realized it's more about the character and not the power, heres hoping the movie is awesome.
