This weekend I received an e-mail from /Film reader Tanner C. informing me that one of the screenwriters of Eagle Eye was working on a screenplay for Blade Runner 2. I spent the weekend trying to get confirmation, and thanks to my friend Frosty at Collider who was able to get in touch with a second person who was also at the event, I was able to confirm that the following was actually said. But before you throw a hissy fit. let me fill you in on all the details and assure you that nothing is being developed by the studio itself, or with the studio’s involvement. Here is the original email:

“I recently attended a Q&A session with one of the writers of ‘Eagle Eye’ after a free screening organized by the magazine Creative Screenwriting. During the Q&A, the writer said that he and whomever it was that helped him co-write the ‘Eagle Eye’ screenplay were in the process of writing a sequel to Blade Runner, and had already contacted the producers of the original, etc., etc. This is probably a load of empty words/wishful thinking on his part, but I for one am appalled by just the notion of a Blade Runner sequel, and thought you’d be as well, so I thought perhaps you’d like to look into this yourself and perhaps use your soapbox to get some fanboys a little pissed, as well. If not, then at least you have a scoop.”

Okay first of all, lets make sure we know who exactly we’re talking about. The screenwriters in question are not Alex Kurtzman or Roberto Orci, but instead Eagle Eye co-writer Travis Wright (who was at the event) and his Eagle Eye co-writer John Glenn. (Update: John Glenn has confirmed that he is no longer involved in the project)

Wright produced a 2005 animated movie which spoofed disaster films, called Disaster! The Movie. While at UCLA, Wright won the Jack Nicholson prize in screenwriting for his WWII drama Hunting the Wolf. At one point Wright and Glenn were attached to write a remake of The Warriors for Tony Scott/Paramount and Louis Leterrier’s remake of Clash of the Titans.

Wright revealed at the Creative Screenwriting event that they have been working on various treatments for a Blade Runner sequel over the last couple years. And there is also the claim that recently the duo have been working with Blade Runner co-executive producer Bud Yorkin on the project. It should be noted that Yorkin likely doesn’t control the rights to a Blade Runner sequel, and all of this is being developed outside of the studio.

But this isn’t just some small side project, Travis also claims that they are already working with a pre-visualization team on some of the hunter action sequences for their eventual pitch with the studio. I don’t believe that Ridley Scott is involved, but the screenwriting team has worked directly with his brother Tony Scott on projects, so their might be a possible connection.

All of this really scares the hell out of me. Blade Runner is one of the most beloved sci-fi films of all time, and it is a movie that doesn’t need a sequel. If Scott had an idea, and really believed it was worth making, then maybe MAYBE. But we certainly don’t need a sequel written by the second teir team of Eagle Eye. Lets hope to God this doesn’t happen.

UPDATE: I just received an e-mail from John Glenn, who claims that he is no longer working with Travis Wright on the Blade Runner sequel. I’m guessing this means that Travis is just working on the project by himself now. The email is reprinted below with permission from Glenn:

John Glenn, here. I just read your article about myself and Travis Wright working on a remake of Blade Runner … Travis and I actually broke off as writing partners years ago - after the first draft of Eagle Eye. Due to previous commitments, I couldn’t make the screening / Q&A last week — so to be honest, I have no idea what Travis was talking about or why he brought up a project we were tooling with years ago, when we still wrote together. There was a point where Travis and I were working with Bud Yorkin on a sequel to Blade Runner, but that was years back. It never got too far off the ground because the movie is so perfect, so the more we thought about it, the more uneasy we became with the idea. Anyway, just an note to clear the air. My apologies to you and your readers for the confusion Travis created.

    I saw Eagle Eye...never saw Bladerunner...but apparently it's good?

    fuck no
  • I just stumbled on this [now old] post and I'm... well I'm not sure what everyone else was reading, but it's quite clear from the above that John Glenn is NOT saying "I bailed on the project" or "Travis is now working on it alone". Both of those POVs (in the story and comments) are in no way clearly stated in the story or the quotes above. Seriously. WTF?

What Glenn does quite clearly state is 'We haven't worked together on anything for years - but we did tinker with Blade Runner at one point'. There's no 'I bailed on this project'. The confirmation quote actually carries the most plausible explanation of Wright's comments: "This is probably a load of empty words/wishful thinking on his part..." Or, alternately, Wright was talking "had/did" (which is supported by Glenn) and the listeners heard (or perceived) "are".

Jeeze, if we can tolerate all of the crappy sequels in the world, can't we be open to one slam-dunk good one?

To those of you who don't want a Bladerunner sequel: If we're lucky enough for the film to come out, just stay in your mom's basement on opening night, check out the reviews online, and then make up your minds.

This movie blowsssssssssssssss! =) Greenwald is a Nazi!

THIS IS THE GAYEST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!!!
  • As much as I'd love another Blade Runner movie I fear todays Hollywood has forgotten how to write movies with "Plot" and "Substance". I worry this movie will be another shitty sequel that will serve only to detract from the majesty of the original film.

Blade runner was a masterpiece of film, if they don't have the best writers and a nearly unlimited budget then I don't think they should even attempt it.
  • (2/24/09)...exactly...I'm afraid we're dealing with mostly 14 year olds with stun guns up their A-holes. I suspect some haven't even seen BR all the way through, or watched it with their eyes closed or brain (?) filled with helium...take your pick...
  • ...exactly...but that could be a major rub...according to one of the earlier BR books (sorry, author's name escapes me now), Scott & Ford couldn't get along...hell, from the sources I've read, & the documentary comment/interviews I've seen over the years, Ford won't even talk about BR. I don't think Ford understands how good he was for the part; even his reading of the over narrative was great (which I think ole Ridley should re-install but he don't ask me about it !!) Maybe if the money's right, Ford 'll get back on board...a hard sell maybe, but somebody should do it : without Scott or Ford, forget it ! And forget it without Sean Young or Edward James Olmos (who obviously would fit into the late great Walsh character role, the role he was bucking for in the storyline!) Wasn't ONLY the writing folks, it was EVERYTHING : the great Vangelis score, the visuals, the acting, directing...the writing (which was complicated enough!...)...that's what makes a great film folks.

I'd love to see a Blade Runner sequel based on the detective-replicant plot, but instead of replicants i would like to see genetic-modified humans (only rich people could have access to that). Genetic-modified humans would be stronger and nearly inmortal. The problem is one of them is a bad guy. Then Deckard has to find him and fight him. Sorry for my english. I hope you understood what i meant.

    HAHAH

they re going to wreck it,it joins the club of great classics turned into a fat shite of Terminator Indiana jones star wars ,Alien, predator, ghostbusters[next on the fuck up list] hahaha i bet sheila puff will play the part
  • I can believe it. They're making a sequel to Donnie Darko, everyone thought that couldn't be touched.
  • door gunner
As a fan who has actually read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, id have no objection if they had a Phiilip K Dick novel to base it on.
They don't and the film was never that close to the novel( probably because R. Scott never actually read it) and it should certainly not be based on the Edge of Human. i refuse to call this book Blade Runner 2.
There has already been another movies set in the same "universe" it was called Soldier and starred Kurt Russell (not the best) but watchable. Wouldn't it be more sensible to just use the universe as setting for other films? I'd love to R. Scott doing another scifi film but leave Deckard out of it.

Are you kiddin' me?! Man, that'd suck!! How can you top the first one? What a couple of dumbasses!!
  • SupaJosh
    No, this cannot...I repeat...CANNOT HAPPEN!

From the writer of Eagle Eye, we bring you the sequel to one of the most visually stunning sci-fi films of the past century...Blade Runner 2?

No. This will not happen, surely to God.
  • Hat
And amen to raides. Hollywood needs to stop with this sequel shit, and start picking up scripts that are ORIGINAL and FRESH. Jesus. Cash cow.
  • Hat
WHY. WHY WHY WHY!!?!?!? One of my favorite movies of all time, because of all the hard work and effort that went into it, and they're making a fucking SEQUEL!? WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The sequel is only going to have CGI everywhere! EVERYWHERE.
  • This would be about as smart as making a sequel to Citizen Kane. Hollywood never really had a great hand at creating sequels and I feel this one would ruin the idea of the original. As good as it would be to return to the universe, its just something that should be better off left alone. The cast alone would have to be completely rebooted as well and that could turn out terrible. The track record for the amount of reboots that did not fail is still very poor. Hollywood needs to get away from remakes and sequels of classics and start focusing on original aspects and ideas. This is why when people look back at film history we will always be able to tell the difference between Ridley Scott and Michael Bay.

It's amazing how revered this film is, so long after it's been made. I agree that I wouldn't mind seeing more of this universe if it's done right. Seeing Ridley Scott do sci-fi again would definately be worthwhile. A new score by Vangelis is a must too. On a sidenote, that picture in the article still gives me goosebumps. What an amazing shot.
  • Cinemascribe
My bad..in my previous post I listed the character's name as Dekker..when I'm well aware it's Deckard. Oops.
  • Cinemascribe
A sequel to Blade Runner already exists..in print. The novel was titled Blade Runner 2: The Edge of Human and picked up Dekker's story sometime after the events of the first film. Written by author K.W. Jeter, the sequel was actually very entertaining, capturing the film noir apsects of the film to perfection inside of a solid plot. If someone proceeds to film a sequel, it should be be based on this novel which was a worthy continuation of the mythos. Otherwise, leave it alone already.

I know that it says that Travis' writing partner bailed on the project, and I know that he says that the further they got into it, the more uneasy they felt. I also know that it says that no studio has signed to it. However you should know that if a studio smells money on a project, they will make it no matter how massive the bad idea is. Travis also said THIS WEEKEND that he was working on it! This idea of making sequels to 20 or 30 year old films is just rediculous! The Director's cut of Blade Runner was a perfect film, and told all of the story that needed to be told.

Perhaps Citizen Kane needs a sequel...
Did Ilsa ever come back to Rick in Cassablanca?

    IS IT IMPORTANT???
    No.

Once all of our stories have been told, the world shall end. We cannot be at that point yet!

I am tired of the Remakes the "Reboots" and the sequels!

Robocop doesn't need to be remade, Blade Runner doesn't need a Son of Blade Runner, Indiana Jones doesn't need to fight aliens and R2D2 does NOT need a Jetpack, and Ghostbusters 3 just plain shouldn't star Seth Rogan! Please put out of your head any ideas of "The Ten Commandments: Ten More Commandments"

Sequelizing, and remaking wonderful films, just shows a lack of imagination and an utter lack of talent!

WE should be demanding better entertainment. WE should be saying No More Garbage!
  • dto1984
    ridiculous
  • dto1984
The only thing more ridicukous than a sequel to a classic film is a re-make (and face it: if Hollywood is willing to remake The Wizard of Oz, anything is game).
  • giantyoda
Hmmm...sacred ground is being treaded upon.

I'd love to read the scripts. However, atching a modern/CGI/over produced rendition of a sci-fi/visual effects masterpiece is a few steps shy of blasphemy.

Does the phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mean anything to Hollywuss?

I think Ridley was talking about the prequel AND sequel that was written back in 1996 (I think) by a writer named Dennis Osborne. I was working at Touchstone where Ridley had set up the projects then and read the prequel treatment and was told what the sequel was and they were amazing stories. Touchstone could not get control of the rights and Ridley's production deal with the studio expired (he HATED being there). They were both totally different tonally from Blade Runner but had played off the history of the Tyrell corporation. I remember that the prequel took place in the present and was very scary and the sequel was more of a Sci-Fi drama many years after Blade Runner took place but they both bookended Blade Runner beautifully and as far as I know, Ridley has never regrouped with Osborne after the Touchstone trouble. I keep hoping and waiting for these stories to be done though because they would have blown everyone away.
  • PK00
"Okay, unless Ridley Scott is on board (which I doubt) this is gonna suck."

Yeah, what the hell were they thinking making a sequel to ALIEN WITHOUT RIDLEY SCOTT?!! WTF?!

Oh yeah, that movie turned out pretty good...
  • Why does this surprise anyone? There's been a series of Blade Runner books out for awhile now, and there was a Blade Runner video game about 10 years ago that didn't have the Harrison Ford character in it. Sure it's a terrible idea, but why are people acting like its a huge surprise?
  • Captain Awesome
    Brandon Johns,

Because just like the first Terminator film. The original director and team were behind T2. Did you notice how the other Terminator films fucking sucked when they weren't done by Cameron?

Big-motherfucking-difference between this and what Ridley Scott said.
  • This announcement is right up there with the rumour that they will be making a 'Karate Kid' remake. Don't mess with something that is still fresh in our memories.
  • frank
great! my childhood is getting raped again.
(i hate that expression but wanted to use it, thanks for letting me)
  • lolabotona
Don't mess with (almost) perfection. If you want to take the book and make some shitty blockbuster with it, by all means. But DON'T go and use Blade Runner in the titles in order to get an audience... remember what happened when it first opened. That should scare the helluva out of Hollywood producers, anyway.
  • Goro
Just have them retitle that damb thing ELECTRIC SHEEP or something.. Even if it is a good film, there's no way the film can live up to the expectation of having BLADE RUNNER in the title.

Fortunately, it's not like anything is going to happen.
  • Rob
No. Terrible, terrible idea anyway - but the not have it written by ANYONE connected with Disaster Movie? For fuck's sake. Horrible, horrible idea. I hope PKD's family completely block it.
  • Brandon Johns
Terminator 2 worked out well, why should this sequel fail?
  • Trebek
Horrible idea. They really net to let up with all these f---ing sequels and remakes and what have you...It makes me want to puke.
  • Was there anything they didn't cover in the first Blade Runner? I think not.

" I am a hard-core BR fan, owning every type of release ever made of the film. However the film had plenty of faults. Flying police cars, perfect human robots and off world colonies all by 2019? Come on. It is a fantasy and for all the people on this page about to get a heart attack about the faint possiblity of a BR 2 all I would say is this. Tell mummy you’ve eaten your dinner, and go out and try and get a girlfriend. And try not to comment about a film thats older than your mum. Dumbasses"

Those are the things you find wrong with the movie? You need to pawn your collection. I understand (sorta) what your say'n. I think were closer to that future we might wanna admit. I mighta cited bad wigs and plot cohessiveness as mistakes before I discredited it for not conforming to our timeline. But yeah the movie certainly had it's mistakes. For my money it's still better than half the shit coming out today. A for effort. Not to be handed over to some random asshole who makes contrived phone in, celluloid shit. It's like turning over Young Frankenstein to Judd Appatow. Don't front like your even in the same league bitch.

    how about :
"The Electric Church" by Jeff Somers
    "Counting Heads" by David Marusek
"Gridlinked"(Ian Cormac novels) by Neal Asher

    Get inspired. Write something new.
  • gocitizen
Seriously, if you are devoid of any original ideas, go option something by Richard K. Morgan or Charles Stross. If you are too broke to option those books, simply read them and get some inspiration to do something original (and worthwhile). Quit wasting your time and connected opportunity by pissing on history.
  • gocitizen
Nothing says "I'm a hack" quite like the notion of raping a classic film. I'm not speaking to anyone directly, but anyone considering a sequel to Blade Runner can go screw themselves.
  • Elpizo
Eagle Eye sucked. Blade Runner 2 will suck. Travis Wright sucks.

Let's get some original material, Hollywood.
  • Ender
    They should be retired.
  • Matt
i wouldn't mind a sequel to blade runner
  • Movie Reviewer Guy
I love this idea! We can defrost Harrison Ford to reprise his role, and then we can give 'Decker' a child replicant and call him Mu....Hut. It's gonna be soooo classic when we see Decker jump into a microwave to save himself during a nuclear blast, all the time while Hut is waiting for his cell phone to let him know when it's time to take a shit! This will be a classic! Blade Runner 2 : The Crystal Eye!
  • Jamie
It's actually quite a small story, even though Ridley Scott's paints a very large world for it. I'm not sure I see where the film lends itself to calling for a continuation.

A sequel would be "contextually unwarranted" as they say.
  • I predicted this would happen.
  • Bladeboy
I cannot believe so many people here are upset about the possibility of a sequel to Blade Runner. I mean, if it turns out to be crap so what? It won't have any effect on the original. If anything it will make it even better which is excatly what happened with the Star Wars movies as the prequels were crap. I am a hard-core BR fan, owning every type of release ever made of the film. However the film had plenty of faults. Flying police cars, perfect human robots and off world colonies all by 2019? Come on. It is a fantasy and for all the people on this page about to get a heart attack about the faint possiblity of a BR 2 all I would say is this.
