George Romero’s Island Zombie Movie

George Romero is about to begin filming a new Zombie film in Toronto, but thankfully, it isn’t the Diary of the Dead sequel that has been mentioned in interviews. Romero revealed the following to SchlockAroundTheClock:

“It’ll be about three weeks in [past the outbreak] and it doesn’t start with the people in the mansion [at the end of Diary]. It starts with the blonde who drove away and the national guardsmen who robbed the people. So those are the only characters that return. What it’s about is tribalism. How the internet creates a Hatfields and McCoys situation. It’s on an island, where people have been lured by someone on the net as a safe haven, but really what these guys are trying to do is hold them up at the boat docks.”

Movieset spoke with Nicolas Chartier, the president of Voltage Pictures, who joked that while the film is yet to be officially titled, it is being referred internally as “Something of the Dead“.

“We’re shooting underwater zombies,” Chartier revealed. “They’re swimming, grabbing people’s legs, pulling them down. It’s a lot of fun.”

So there you have it. A film which takes place three weeks after the outbreak, with a group of survivors fending off underwater zombies on a secluded island. Sounds good to me. Lets just hope its better than Diary of the Dead…

Maybe he can include a zombie vs shark scene like in Zombie Flesh Eaters! Now that would be awesome!
  • I love his first trilogy, i love zombiemovies, but after his latest crapfest (diary) im not getting excited at all :/
  • I love George Romero probablly more than anyone here. but he really needs to retire, or move onto something new.

Night? awesome. Dawn? great. Day? best horror movie ever made. Land? meh. and Diary of the Dead? I never saw it, and there's a reason for that.

if you want to see underwater zombies, just watch Zombie.
  • Brian
Retire? wha? You are nuts ... Diary was an enjoyable flick. Sure, it's not as great as the original 3, but what is? Seriously ...

    This is great news.
  • ZombieFleshEater
There was only one good scene in Diary, and that was where you met Samuel.
But i agree about what your sayin about romero retiring and about the original 3.
  • lefthandedpanda
Whatever happened to that 3D zombie flick that was supposed to come out?
  • ZombieFleshEater
It did. I only found out about it on the 17 of feb. it was another remake of night of the living dead. it had Sid Haig in, the clown guy from night of 1000 corpses. you can check out info about it on www.imdb.com.
  • Tom
Branden, don't even say you love George Romero man. First off, Day of the dead horrrrriblee. 2nd off you never even saw Diary of the Dead, so thus, you're not a true romero fan. 3rd, if you love him more then anyone "here" why would you want the man to retire? Take a seat. George, keep on making movies til you have a heart attack on the set and rise as one of your own.
  • ZombieFleshEater
Stick to your guns. day of the dead wasnt that bad, but it did suck a bit.
  • i definately agree with this, i love Romero, by far the worst one was Day of the Dead,

Diary and Land weren't even that bad! yeh not as good as Night of the living dead or Dawn of the Dead but they are by far the best two zombie films ever made!
  • Panda
Diary was really bad.. same with cloverfield. hand-held camera movie's suck so I dont blame Romero..

So Ima wait for this one and also the World War Z movie.. any news on that?
  • REAL6
Tom, now you are really bugging out. Day of the dead 'Original' is one of the best horror movies ever made.
  • deathmetalhero
man I love this site but I dont think I will ever agree with any of your staff's opinion. I still love xXx (yes I know its crappy and yes I know I mention it everytime I post here) and I loved Diary. Loved Diary, and I loved Land too. Yes, the main chick in diary is horrible, the dialog and narration are sometimes cringe-worthy, but it was entertaining. I didnt think about how broke I was when I saw it in the theaters for 90 minutes, or wonder how I was going to pay rent or get home that night. I know, remembering that the whole point of a movie is to be entertained can be a strange and almost painful subject for a lot of film you film snobs(and I mean that in the most insulting way possible(and I mean that in the most joking-uh-ly? way possible)). I for one am just happy George is still making zombie movies, and I would watch anything else he decides to make.
  • ZombieFleshEater
I will watch all of the romero films to. even if some are craporama. hes just to much of a legend horror master, like wes craven.
  • Day had some good moments, but overall wasn't his best work by a long, long way. As I said to friend of mine, the original Romero "Dead" trilogy followed the exact same arc of awesome/suck-iness as the Original Star Wars Trilogy, making Day the ROTJ of the three.

I thought Land was a bit of fun, but forgettable and Diary... well, twice now I've tried to watch it and I haven't made it past half an hour each time.
  • ZombieFleshEater
i agree with what you say on Day and Diary(that film sucked), but star wars!?
The Star Wars trilogy are great!
  • It's ironic that the very first "related story" under the article is a quote from Romero saying "Zombies can't run." If they're not capable of running, how can they be capable of SWIMMING?!?
  • ZombieFleshEater
Because swimming isnt running! and on Land of the Dead, you see Big Daddy and other zombies walk on the bottom of the river. they dont need to breath, so they can stay under water. They can only die with a bullet or something else through the forhead.
  • Captain Awesome
Land and Diary were fucking horrible. I think Romero would probably be better as a producer or a creative team member in a zombie project.

    @ Enrique,

You see, because they don't have to put weight on their ankles as if they were running. Hence being light enough to paddle with their legs. (sarcasm, good sir!) I agree with you.
  • Tom
I agree with Kale pretty much. But it's quite a bold statement to say Day is "the best horror movie ever". I'd love to see how your ranking of Romero movies is. and I dont even consider both day of the dead remakes (well one's supposedly a sequel) to be mentioned in the same sentence as Romero.
  • Romero + Zombies = My strange addiction.

Even the lesser of his zombie movies are enjoyable. I enjoyed Land and Diary for what they were. In fact, Diary was shot BEFORE Cloverfield. I agree there were things that didn't work about it (acting, music). But I went a long for the ride & still loved it. There were some great zombie moments

I'm looking forward to the next movie and am happy to see Romero just having fun & not giving a shit. He's still the zombie master in my book.
  • Quoben
Wow, this sounds very promising! I'm really looking forward to this movie and I firmly believe that George Romero will redeem himself this time and make up for the rather embarrassing mistake that Diary of the Dead was.
  • south texas terror
Swimming Zombies? what's next flyin zombies or zombies in space, then zombies underground. Romero keeps makin zombie movies and morons eat it up but then throw a hissy fit when burton/depp or scorcese/dicaprio make another movie.
  • Zombies in Space!
  • ZombieFleshEater
    LOL XD : )
  • jamie
this same idea has been done before in Zombi 2
  • Diary of the dead was an espectacular film. One of the bests, becouse he´s still talking about the society (internet, media tv lies, and more) using the zombies.
It was a comedy movie, more than a horror movie. Otherwise you didn´t understend it.
Anyways , cool idea. Sounds like "Lost" with Zombies.
  • terrance
Zombies cant swim, yet they will not drown by going in the water. they would just walk along the bottom until they one day reach the opposite shore. Hence the pulling down victims from below.

This is a Unique concept and a fresh incertion into the genre. I think people sometimes forget that this is more about the interaction of the characters and how they cope with this situation. I thought the last film was great ( diary ) it served its purpose, to re-tell the story of the beggining.

Cant wait to see this.....Also look forward to world war z
  • terrance
oh and check UHM.com for up coming horror movies, you will see your flying zombies
  • ZombieFleshEater
    whats the movie called?
  • Eric B.
Sounds like house of the dead
  • "Island of the Dead"...let's face it zombie films are here to stay!
  • justin
I think I am going to cry thats all :(
  • Adam
I live In Simcoe, Ontario ,Canada and they are shooting the new romero movie as we speek I just went down to port dover thats where they are shooting it and it is being shoot on the pier on lake erie.
  • ZombieFleshEater
if i were you, i would go down as much as you can. watching the effects of the film live is amazing. i would give anything to be where you are!
  • Aaron
Diary was pretty bad. I am a fan of Romero's work until that movie. When I first read the plot line of it, I liked it. Sadly, I thought the same thing about Cloverfield when I saw previews of it. Unfortunately, neither movie was any good. I am not one to notice bad acting usually but dear god, the actors in Diary sounded so fake throughout. And after the sickle in the face scene, I couldn't help but laugh at the rest of the movie. Here's hoping Romero rebounds with this new movie but I'm not going to hold my breath.
  • I love all of the Romero Dead films. A lot of people say that George has crapped out and that he should give up. Well they should take into consideration that they couldn't do what he has and is doing. You can't tell the person that defined one of the major monsters to stop using them.

If any of you have read any of his interviews you'd see he'd like to do something other than a zombie peice but he's been just as jaded as carrie fisher is to star wars as he is to his zombies. But he still retains that dignity and fashon. George knows what he's doing and he's got my unrelenting support for anywhere things go.

Watch Diary of the Dead again. Watch Day of the Dead 2, the Day of the Dead remake and Night of the Living Dead 3D. Compare them to George's Recent work and quit trying to define your ignorant views of complaint. See something good in this, that's all I see. I see the good.
  • jc
always down for a for another film from george..i my self thought day of the dead was the best no doubt...great looking zombies and the death scenes were just on anothet level...but yeah i love all of them and cant wait on the next chapter :)
  • Sal
I live in Hamilton, Ontario where it is being filmed and i got to watch the filming of a scene where zombies are swimming and attacking the people. They filmed it in a rec center down the street from me which is attached to my high school.
  • I don't know why some of you guys are bashing "Diary" so badly. It wasn't the greatest zombie flick of all time, but it certainly wasn't the worst. Romero has a set story line and undertones that are expressed in each of his films. You just have to settle into them as a whole and enjoy the story being woven. I for one, can not wait for the next one to come out. I grew up on the franchise and and hope my kids are as into them as i am.
  • toolboy
I didn't like Diary at all. Thats not so say i won't be watching this movie but i feel George is losing focus of what made his movies great "FEAR" and focusing more on psychology and messages that really detract from the movie, i mean lets be honest the last 2 movies were more of this nature then his trilogy. Yes he used underlying themes in his earlier works but they were suttle and fear is what kept my interest of those. The last 2 movies didn't move me at all, Lands make up was horrid acting was cheesy and the story was awful. 1)the use of money? 2) zombies could think way to well 3) the ending was OMG? zombies ate there friends yet they let them go?? come on! And i won't even touch diary. When the dawn remake was being made i wanted to hate it because i am a Remero fan but honestly it was way better made than Land. Look at 28 days and weeks later (yes i know there not true zombie films) those movies actually gave a scare here and there. I wish there was someone out there who could catch the zest of the old Romero 's flame and light a new torch with a whole lot of spook in it.
  • Are there any updates to this movie recently?
  • Simons Ryan
Well, I don't agree with many of you. I question whether you purported 'biggest Romero fans ever' have ever seen 'There's Always Vanilla' or 'Jack's Wife' or 'Bruiser'. I guarantee you probably haven't, therefore cannot be big Romero fans. What you are are big fans of his zombie movies, at least supposedly. Night is a classic, Dawn is probably not only the best horror flick ever made but also one of the best pieces of cinema out of the 1970's period, and Day was...well, okay (if he'd been able to shoot the original script it would have been a lot different I suppose). Now Land? It's not great, but it's not horrible, I enjoyed it as much as Day if not more, just for the fact that there is more movement and something actually happens! Diary I liked, again, not a classic but an entertaining film with some great moments in it. I know some of the acting wasn't that great but when dealing with all unknowns you get a couple of rotten eggs (remember the John character from Day? Now that is bad acting, the worst of all the films, don't forget so conveniently). I think the films people liked in their younger days cause people to nostalgically rate them above whatever will come next. Romero could put out the best film ever and most of you would still bitch and moan.

u have to give him credit so far he has made some good ones but yeah i agree land of the dead didint make sence zombes shodent have guns but dary of the dead had a prity good story line but yeah the camara vew suck but ate the same time noone rilly makes zombe moves eny more and if u dont like his moves make ur own dam zombe move
  • ZombieFleshEater
Your right about the trilogy, and about diary, but i feel this film will be better than diary. Im probaly wrong and i have seen 2 craporama posters, i still think romero has stil some sort of magic left.
  • ZombieFleshEater
Burton/Depp films are perfect film material, and the zombies dont swim in romero flicks. they walk on the bottom of the river.
  • gian
all of romeros zombie movies were great imo...as a zombie freak i cant help it, 28 days and weeks were dope, so as dead set serious...only draw back id say in land was the "thinking" zombie dawn remake was A+ but being a pretty big guy at 5'11 230lb i dont like the thought of running zombies :D love romero!!!!
  • gian
lol by the way i know the movies i stated werent romeros im trying to point out that i like all movies as alot of my friends didnt like 28 weeks or days later etc..
