Bill Murray Offers Warning to Ghostbusters 3 Writers

Bill Murray made a surprise appearance during a secret screening of City of Ember at Fantastic Fest. Now I’m kicking myself for having to leave early to Los Angeles to cover the big Disney even. Oh well. Murray was asked about Ghostbusters 3. For those who have been in a cave for the last month, The Office’s Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg are writing a script which will introduce a new generation of Ghostbusters. We’ve heard Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis talk about the possible sequel, but to my knowlege, this is the first time Bill Murray has commented publicly. Here is what Murray had to say:

“I think the wounds from Ghostbusters 2 have healed, Murray joked, the crowd errupting in laughter. “And supposedly they have hired two guys from The Office to write a script. So that could work. I think that’s a good idea to get a fresh look at… I always liked the characters. The characters are fun. And we did have a lot of fun making the movie. The first one was really a lot of fun to make. And I think the first 45 minutes of Ghostbusters is about as fun as a movie gets.”

Murray then offered advice to the new writers, a bit of a warning:

“We didn’t have a lot of special effects in it. There were just a couple. It was just the funny characters in that world, and I like that movie because of it. The first movie had like 60 plate shots. The second movie had like hundreds. Those guys got their hands on the script early, and it was GONE. It went away. It was hard to wrangle because it was tied all around the effects without the story or the characters coming first. So, they are hard movies to write, and Dan really caught it with that first one.”

And it sounds like Murray would love to reprise the role on the big screen.

“The characters are fun to do. We did the video game this summer and it was fun to do it again. I found myself walking down fifth avenue singing the song. People were like ‘wow that actor is really full of himself’.

You can watch Murray talk about Ghostbusters 3 in the video clip below, around the 5:15 mark.

He's right. The main reason the first movie's so good is because it's hardly about busting ghosts with proton beams and stuff, it's about a bunch of goofballs starting a business and some asshole who's trying to stop them from succeeding... GB2's passable at best, but the subtle humor from the first is mostly gone, replaced by fx and more moranis. I doubt they can pull off a good gb movie after all this time has gone by though. It'd be a damn miracle if it was anywhere near the first one, which was some kind of miracle movie in itself.

at least he's open to a part 3! Go BIll

I agree, GB should be funny and I hope they dont make a CGI action fest or a dark spookey film.

He's being disingenuous about GB1--it actually had over 200 effects shots, all of which had to be completed in about 2 months in order to hit the unrealistic release date Columbia gave them. Supposedly the effects guys didn't get to 'finish' some of the effects to the degree that they wanted to, but test audiences dug what they had already that they let a lot of things slide since no one cared.
  • Oi Vey
it's funny how Ghostbuster's effects are still good till this very day.

    I love Bill Murray.
The first GB is classic, the second is everything not to do in a sequel.
This new film sounds like it could be a lot of fun, or a trainwreck.
I'll be there opening weekend either way.

its so good to hear he's into it. i was worried he'd be the one who only had a cameo, but if they got all 4 guys, i say fuck the 'torch passing' idea.

and he couldn't be more right about the effects. in todays world, i can easily see them going overboard with effects - but that's not what GB is about. i say they should be really brave, and use the EXACT SAME METHODS that were used in the first 2 films.

btw, i don't think i truly expressed my excitement over this film...FUCKING HELL YES!!!!!!! i will be anticipating this more than i was Indiana jones, and thank god all four guys are back. i will kidnap and hurt those two of'fice' pricks if they give us a shitty script. they really need to heed murray's words - he's 100% right.

Hey Writers of the Third Film:

Don't forget to include the ghost in the New York Public library from the first film. That was the first ghost they encountered and they never did catch her.

It would be a nice callback to see the new guys encounter the same ghost again.

    Good luck.
  • I'd love for this movie to make it to the big screen eventually..
  • it's either prequel; remake or trilogy...or all three.

It's all about the script/story. the second one was passable but it was a let down i could see why he didnt want to do another one, but since the game is coming out (looks cool) i think it sparked an intrest. but they need to go back to the basic formula why the first one did so good. basicly, don't go to over the top with it, but have a funny, but yet serious parts to it. like the first one! no "pink" energy slime from peoples evil thoughts. that was weak. get back to the basics! i heard they are going to introduce new ghostbusters, that whas me worried. keep it the original guys please. that's what made the first one so good. "are you the gate keeper? dude was funny. i forget his name.
  • Soozi
Please keep to the original daggy, slapstick kind of humor that has veins of venkman's sarcasm running along with it!! I agree with Murray (one of my all time fave actors) but in the end he wont be the one to give it its body form. I hope they listen to him. Oh, and how awesome will it be if Seth Rogen helped to write/star in GB3? He's new but seems to have the same mindset as Ramis as he starred with Rogen in Knocked Up :)
  • If you're going to transcript people, DON'T guess what they say. So many words were wrong it was amazing.
