Cloverfield Director To Remake Let The Right One In

It seems like only last week that I declared Let The Right One In was one of 2008’s must see movies. I was since informed that the film is already getting an English language remake by Hammer Films and Spitfire Pictures. And tonight Variety announced that Cloverfield director Matt Reeves has signed on to helm the film. Overture Films is fast-tracking the project, so expect the movie to be released sometime next year.

In the meantime, please mark October 24th on your calendars, because if you live in New York or Los Angeles, you’ll be busy that night watching the original Swedish film theatrically. Magnet/Magnolia will expand the release into more markets in the weeks that follow.

I’m not sure how the remake will stack up against the original, but having Reeves on board gives me hope. Reeves’ television background is proof that he is good at directing stories with a natural emotional core. And Let The Right One In is just that type of film. Lets just hope that Overture and Hammer don’t try to turn the remake into a more conventional horror film.

I just want to see the swedish film.

I'm all for a good remake of a foreign if handled with care. But fast tracking is a dangerous thing.

    whats that saying?

    You cant rush art?
    Yeah that sounds about right.

Depending on the writers and the director for any particular project, having a severe time limit could actually be helpful. Usually it's not, I imagine, but one can be optimistic.

I just hope he does a good job, after seeing the trailer to the American remake of [REC], which looks like crap compared to the original, I just hope an American remake of a horror movie can pull through, kind of like The Ring did so long ago.

I live like 3 hours from NY and am considering going just to see it.
of course I'd need more info on when/where the screening will be,
but really, I don't feel like waiting for the remake nor the DVD.

finally the swedes have a good movie! I'd rather see the original get a wide release than a remake...

the swedes already have a lot of good movies. i recommend that you see a movie called Den Osynlige (Translated: The Invisible). Its about a boy who is brutally beaten by a girl who thought he did something that he didnt. Basically he has an out of body experiencev and she can hear him sub-consciously and then tries to find his body before its too late. Its very emotional and of course has been remade into a buttered up American one.

i haven't even seen the original yet and I'm already afraid of what's going to happen with the remake...I agree with yo yo ma, I would much rather see the original get a wide release, but since they're gonna do it, I really hope they do it justice.

Americans can't come up with their own ideas anymore. Pathetic.
  • ANGRY BROOMSTICK
yeah, i agree with everybody else. I'd rather see the swedish original because i love foreign films, especially European, AND horror movies.

no thanks to the stupid remake.
  • akumi
Angry Broomstick, what's truly pathetic is the statement, "Americans can’t come up with their own ideas anymore." Maybe we can't often get our ideas made into movies because it isn't financially viable, but that's quite different. Please think before you type.

This is going to be bad. What's wrong with widely distributing the original? Were going to end up with unnecessary prequels and sequels. Fucking Hollywood.
  • I have to see the ORIGINAL! Don't care about news of a remake. Why? Does every other market remake American films. No. We should just pay to see films from other markets. I guess if the original cast and crew get some of the money from the remake then I wouldn't be so pissed about the way they do this shit.

"but having Reeves on board gives me hope. Reeves’ television background is proof that he is good at directing stories with a natural emotional core."

You, sir, are on crack. A television background means your good at making homogenized crap for a mainstream audience under boiler room conditions and can churn it out on an assembly-line time table. That's all it means.

if he based it on the book he can make a great movie
