I’m a huge fan of Y: The Last Man, so it only makes sense that I’m very excited about the possibility of a big screen movie adaptation. DJ Caruso isn’t my first choice to direct that film, but if he can get Shia LaBeouf to star as Yorick - than I’m happy (I mean, think of how bad it could be with one of the stars from High School Musical as the lead?!). And everything DJ Caruso has said so far has convinced me that this guy has a good grip on the story… until now.

The filmmaker revealed to FirstShowing one of the big changes he made from the comic: the addition of a “ticking clock”, which makes sense. Since the film is being set up as the first in a trilogy (last I heard), you need to create a climax that satisfies the audience, but doesn’t end the adventure. But the ticking clock that Caruso came up with sounds rather stupid.

“One big change is that we put in a ‘ticking clock’ with Yorick and Ampersand, and I separated them, and Yorick starts to get a little sick when Ampersand’s not with him. I felt like we needed some kind of ticking clock so it wasn’t just a boy and his monkey.”

I have yet to finish the last couple books of the series due to my busy schedule, but I’m pretty sure that this separation sickness can’t be explained in the context of the story from the graphic novel. And the whole idea sounds very Hollywood (in a bad way) to me. Caruso claims that Y co-creator Brian K Vaughn “loved” the addition.

Caruso handed in a script to Warner Bros/New Line last week, and claims he will be tweaking it over the course of the next month. He insists that “In another month or so it should be ready.” Lets just hope that WB gives Caruso the budget he needs to bring Y to the big screen.

Discuss: In the movie, should Yorick and Ampersand get sick when they are apart from one another?

  • Delgado
I have finished the series, own them all, and this in no way fits the context of the story.

Very disappointing... why is it that will all adaptations I feel like I could've done better if someone just gave me 75 million or so. Thats all I'm asking, simple request no?
  • RobertN
well in the comic they get seperated once and Yorick get's sick

but its because of food poisoning.
  • In the graphic novel they think he gets sick because he gets separated by the engagement ring. It's actually after they find out Yorick has food poisoning that Toyota monkey-naps Ampersand. Sorry, but i had to correct...
I haven't followed D.J. Caruso much but i remember when i saw Disturbia thinking it was predictable and the concept was totally unoriginal (Rear Window).
He shouldn't have any creative license in this project at all.

P.S. Shia La Beouf is no man

Like Delgado, I have all the books and absolutly loved the series and this shit is just being inserted to make sense to the producers and money backers.. it has no need to be in the story. I think If they are going to be separated, It should written as close to the Graphic Nov. as possible. It all made sense when you were reading it though at some points there would be flash backs along the time line, they were all well organized... Do many additions will ruin the possibility of this as another good adaptation..

Wasn't part of the reason why Yorick survived the man-killer virus because something about Ampersand's immune system helped him fight it off? So maybe it's not that far fetched of an idea -- in this case he has to be around the monkey all the time to keep the virus from attacking him.
  • jank
    E.T. ?
  • Aaron
I don't want to spoil anything so I'll just say keep reading before you make judgments.
  • Captain Awesome
This is like when HBO gave Preacher to that retard Mark Steven Johnson to take a crack at.

I hope this fizzles out for DJ Get-A-Grown-Up-Name, because this dipshit is ruining it.
  • Hendo
I don't like the idea. In the book they get seperated soooooooooo many times and some of those seperations are necessary for the plot. Sure the first ninja attack could be written out. But the other? Not so much. Why not just have the food poisoning thing that they think was caused by the ring be the "ticking clock" and end one film right there? Granted it would be extremely anti climatic when everyone finds out that it was only food poisoning... but still...
  • MonkeyMafia
As an enormous fan, I really just don't care very much. It's not in the context of the story but it is almost within its logical boundaries (Though how will the new baby Yorick survive without a new baby Ampersand of his own???)

This comic is such a strong, straightfoward narrative that I really think it's going to take a great deal of WTF's to make it unwatchable. That being said, with such an abundance of villans in the series why not flesh out a climax from one of their encounters? I guess I have mixed feelings....
  • Please, don't make any judgements when you haven't even finished the series.
  • Wrathloki
    This is just dumb.
  • aj
I've just finished the whole series, and I can say that this idea will literally ruin numerous story arcs for the rest of the films. What will happen to baby Vladimir (astronaut's baby) for the later films? The baby doesn't need ampersand around in order to survive after being inoculated. I guess it could work, but there will be a bunch of minor story details that could end up effecting the outcome of the entire trilogy. I would rather have the story be "just about a boy and his monkey". Worked just fine with the graphic novel.

Love the comics, hate the idea of Shia LaBeouf playing Yorick, he's incredibly boring and self aware when he's on screen. I would love to have seen Zachary Levi from "Chuck" play Yorick.

And this ticking clock plot sounds pretty dubious.
  • will
    sounds like E.T. to me.
  • Clint Barton
I don't agree with this at all. And I know I (or anyone else in this chatboard) have no say in it, but this film is headed down the wrong track.

Don't go for the PG-13 rating-- The first part of the series is brutal. Amazons cutting of their own breasts, the showdown between Yorrick/womens prison ladies and Hero/Amazons is graphic too. The corpses-littering the streets.

Ticking Clock!?!-- Yorrick survived because he ate Ampersands poo. So is Yorrick going to have to continually eat monkey poo? JUST STICK TO THE STORY THAT EVERYONE LOVES!!!

No Beth 1-- Yes there are multiple Beth's in the story. And they are also referred to as Beth 1 and Beth 2... Yorrick seeking out to find Beth 1 to discover the answer to his marriage proposal is a huge part of the story. Yorrick is extremely loyal (except for the one incident with Beth 2), and shows it while searching for Beth 1.

Shia--- I liked the idea of Topher Grace as Yorrick much better...
  • Hendo
what the hell! *SPOILER AHEAD* (warning eventhough it's more or less been said already lol) I just thought of something else... Y doesn't find out why he survived until near the end when they're in Asia so if he finds out why in the beginning then it will mess up other things no matter how minor they may be
  • orange cinema
when we first heard caruso's idea months ago - i hated it. now that it's brought up again - i stiill hate it. i just don't understand why an excellent story needs to be changed to accomidate a timid studio.
  • Ryan
I have read all the books,
and I gave hope for this project a long time ago.
  • Dustin...I like the idea of Zachary Levi playing Y also...

I don't think Shia Labouf would be fitting for Yorick.
  • Chadwick
I agree with Captain Awesome... Hollywood stick with DC/Marvel, do not touch Vertigo comics. Also.. i heard Ampersand is going to be CGI... hmmm Shia Labouf and a CGI Monkey... didnt i see this sh*t in another sh*tty movie?
  • Hendo
"Ampersand is going to be CGI" nah don't worry about that. He said he wants to use a real monkey.
  • nelson
i don't see a problem with this they get separated in the book anyways him getting sick for eating old food is kinda dumb to begin with Brian K. Vaughan said he loved the change so i wont mind it if he likes it
  • Roberto
Reminds me of the daemons in The Golden Compass.
  • Mark
Ticking clock? Seperation sickness? WTF?!? I read the first 20 issues or so, so I can't comment on the whole storyline, but I abhor any unnecessary changes to increase drama and/or mainstream appeal. For example it's always amazing to hear how close Zack Snyder sticks to his source material.
I really like the Y:The Last Man graphic novels, but the concept of this film sounds not that promising so far. Caruso is definitely not the right choice for this franchise and I doubt he will treat the source material with the required respect. And Eagle Eye is already bad and shallow.
  • Captain Awesome
    orange cinema,

Because every douche like this thinks they can somehow tack-on their "own" stamp of flavoring. The soup is already perfect.
  • nelson
if i want a page for page copy of the book to film i would just buy the book in an adaption i want some changes even tho its a adaption not every single frame by frame by frame should be adapted so i welcome changes it doesn't affect the storyline of the book so i welcome it

Denny said: "Wasn’t part of the reason why Yorick survived the man-killer virus because something about Ampersand’s immune system helped him fight it off? My science brain just imploded from the nonsensicalness. You're talking about antibodies, yes? The ones that Yorick's own body would have produced in response to being exposed to Ampersand's fecal antigens? The ones his immune system would continue to produce even in Amp's absence because the immune system has a memory and that's why you don't catch the exact same cold virus twice?

I could more easily swallow Yorick getting ill after being separated from Amp because he's psychologically attached to the monkey and the separation psychosomatically expresses itself as symptoms of illness. And I'd have a really tough time swallowing that in the first place.
  • Lenny Denny
    Spoiler Alert!!!!!

I'm glad I know everything that happens in this movie now.
  • j
The ticking clock thing is a very stupid idea, sounds like fucking ET. Also if Cuarso was a real Y fan then he would right upfront say back me the money for a trilogy right now or Shia and I walk. This is gonna end up a PG-13 popcorn crap fest I bet. It needs to be a trilogy and it should be R. Stupid ticking clock idea!
  • Travis
I honestly think it's a pretty good idea myself. I'll probably be roasted for that comment but I read the books a few months back and I think it could work in well.

    *Spoilers*
Y & Amp were seperated several times, obviously the longest being towards the end of the books when the chick kidnaps him. But during those times I don't recall Y doing anything extraordinary, so why not add that extra bit to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. The deal with how he lived was with Amps fecal matter, etc - so to my mind if Y is seperated from his cure then he slowly descends into sickness and ultimately death as the others did, just not as fast. That is obviously playing it on a surface level and not examining how the immune system works and so forth, which is fine because the majority of the audience isn't going to question it.

Regarding Shia, originally I thought this was the best choice but Clint made a good suggestion with Topher Grace. I hated him as Venom/Brock but Yorick always struck me as kinda goofy/nerdy in a lot of ways and Topher can do goofy/nerdy well.

Beth1 being left out is a huge mistake imo; the entire story revolves around his loyalty and love to this woman... It's his entire motivation throughout the books (not counting 355).

PG-13 works for me; theres no gory/bloody scenes that need to be shown for this movie to work well. And I'm not certain on the conditions of what makes a PG-13 movie but I think a few dead bodies in the streets at the beginning wont hurt.. although Im pretty certain that gets cut along with the model/garbage woman. It's a small story in the books even if it's revisted a couple times.

My only concern for the movie is that they play up his personality properly, include Beth 1 and 2, his relationship w/ 355, his sister, and most importantly for me; the ending. It needs to end with him being 80+years old, in a straight-jacket, escaping from his asylum. As long as that's in there I'm happy :)

The whole point of making a Y: The Last Man trilogy is that Y: The Last Man is already perfectly suited to make a trilogy (you can ditch a few arcs here in there but the overall plot times in around 8 hours). I wish directors would just make the fricken film and stop trying to change what we love so much already unless it honestly needs changing (that goes for so many other films based on other material).
  • rob
    I agree fuck shia labeouf
  • Mark K.
Wow, please ruin this more. First Shia LeDOUCHE, now this "ticking clock" bullsh-t? Give me a break...
