Kevin Smith appeared on the Cinemablend podcast and listed off some of the reasons that studios might be afraid to greenlight his next film, Red State:

1. The Movie is ““decidedly non-commercial, it’s really fuckin bleak and dark, so bleak that it makes The Dark Knight look like Strawberry Shortcake.”
2. “There’s no character to root for.” … “It’s a series of insane, bad choices based on moral or immoral quandaries.”
3. “Everybody dies.”
4. “I do expect it to be a real film festival type film that will travel awhile.” … ” The only way it ever does business theatrically is if there’s like some kind of water cooler chat about it based on the festival showings.”
5. “They’re just like ‘there’s no audience for this movie.’ Like, nobody wants to see a movie this dark.”

“Based on all that nobody wants to write a check for it and I kind of get it. I’m not sitting here going ‘What? Why wouldn’t you want to finance a loser?’,” Smith says, later adding. “I’ve done comedy after comedy after comedy, and to do a movie that’s kind of 180 degrees away from that is, a test of sorts, where I get to see if I’m truly a filmmaker or just a dick and fart joke guy. No matter how it works out, I think I’d be content. Like, if it does work I’d be like ‘wow I know it! I am a filmmaker as well.’ If it doesn’t I’d just be like ‘alright I’m back to the dick and far joke salt mine.”

I’m interested to see what Smith can do with a completely different genre, and a totally unknown cast. I just hope he gets the chance and doesn’t feel the need to inject unneeded comedy and cameos to compensate for the nervous leap into the unknown. Hopefully the result will be more Drawing Flies than Vulgar.

sounds like a movie i would like to see.
  • Come on world, let Kevin have a diffrent perspective as a film maker...he gave us solid cult hits!...Give it to the man already!
  • Steelo
    @ Arthera

    That's a pretty solid perception
  • arthera
I like Kevin Smith as much as the next slash film reader, but I had the idea that maybe the movie is not that good. We have seen plenty of movies get made with much less mass appeal that are "dark". I am not sure how much Requim For a Dream got made for, but using the fact that a movie is dark is too "depressing" is not a good excuse in my head. Don't get me wrong I will see the movie if it every gets made, but I think people have too much faith in Smith some times.

    where's your movie Jonesy?
  • Steelo
Giving away the ending? It's kind of like some of those big equations in math:
"here's the answer, now show me your process."
  • simOn2it
Greg... his movies make a lot of money. Compared to how much they cost a Smith movie is a sure hit.
  • M&Co
What the hell are you talking about Greg? All Smith's films have made serious bank besides Jersey Girl, and LOL at being "burnt" by a film. Grow up.
  • Greg
righto Kev these are why the studios are reluctant:

    1) Your films make no money
    2) You've not done horror before
    3) You've given away the ending

If Zack and Miri is a hit then you can do what you want. Some people are still burnt after Jersey Girl.

looking fwd to watch it. although it does feels like watching a documentary more than a movie. It bleak, its dark, everyone dies, no heroes/winners. everything keeps getting worse.. hey, feels like our reality.
  • 790
Kevins just fucking with the MPAA,,,
    Nice Kev!
  • Dr.Doc
oh nevermind. it just took a while to show up. sorry bout that folks.
  • Dr.Doc
i really wanna see how this turns out. i hope it gets made. hes one of my faves, and i love the horror genre.

cant wait for ' Zack and Miri Make a Porno'. Seth Rogen is hilarious and Elizabeth Banks is a slammin hotie!

Kevin Smith is a god among fanboys!
  • Father Bradley
If he wants to "prove he's a filmmaker" why doesn't he do a british period piece or something. With dick and fart jokes. Money in the bank.
  • jamie
he's not getting any funding because his movies don't do jack **** at the box office, and typically don't even get that good reviews

all he's good for is blogging about movies he's seen months before their release date and how awesome they are
  • jerry seinfeld
    he forgot:

    6. It won't make money.

i love how kevin is perfectly willing to 'call out' studios for not risking their money to make his self-admitted non-commercial film, but will not put up any of his own cash and make it himself.

way to bite the hand that (literally) feeds you, kevin.
  • aj
Well at least he's self aware. He knows that the comedies he makes don't necessarily leave a mark in the history of film time-line. Its nice to hear that he's ready to buckle down and do something dark. Whats funny about me is that I like Smith's films, but I'm a sucker for really dark dramas. I loved the novel 'the road' which is extremely bleak and dismal. If Smith did something equally bleak...I'd be ready to rock.
  • anyone considering the idea that maybe no one wants to make the movie because it isn't that great?

i remember after kevin smith finished the 'jersey girl' screenplay wrote an entry on the view askew website basically talking about how it was his best work ever and he could be nominated for an oscar. i'd love to see something different from the guy but i've been burned a couple times.
  • fanboy
    To Christopher Marc:
Kev's movies make money, in the box office. Just not a lot, he has at least broken even on everything he has ever made. Now I will stop typing and go back to watching Jersey Girl.
  • crux
Sounds like you might wanna rewrite big Kev. I haven't seen it and I don't know what it's about so i'll reserve judgement but unless it's absolutely nessasary no need to break it off in someones ass for shock value. Think about your film could use as opposed to what it can't do without.
  • Josh
dude this movie sounds so dark! i bet it's just really really really dark with a little bit of bleak too but it's so dark that you can barely see how bleak it is. also, totally irrelevant.
  • Prophecy_Projectz
If it will only cost 4 to 5 mil then some studio should take a chance and produce it and/or put out on the festivals and go from there.

Im wondering however if Smith is just saying no one wants to finance it to maintain his "indie film maker" image and drum up hype/buzz for the film ("Wow its that dark? Its that edgy?")

Smart move by Silent Bob if so, I cant hate.
  • DudeMan
Kevin Smith. Seriously, bro. Suck it up. Do it for cheap. Remember when you made, clerks? It's one thing to read Darren A.'s quote about trying to make the Noah movie, but it's another thing reading this quote from Kevin Smith, which just seems whiney to me.
  • M&Co
Smith should put a call out to fans worldwide and get everyone to donate $100 for a producer credit.
  • Sandy Mandy
OIC, thanks for spoiling the movie LOL
  • Goobity
Kevin's movies seem to come out better the less he puts into production funds. Jersey Girl cost $35 mil, while Clerks topped out around $50,000. None of his films will ever be 'blockbusters', and I don't think it matters, or that he cares. He likes what he does...and I agree with him. Proceed, Mr. Smith.
  • i'll see it. That might just be one way of Kevin marketing his movie. "The 'unwatchable' movie". Reminds me of the way The passion of christ marketed itself.
  • Jamie
Why don't you pay for it Kevin?
  • buzz_clik
    @gah

I was wondering the same thing. But maybe it's one of those Journey > Destination things? Or maybe you find it out towards the start of the movie? Perhaps death doesn't inhibit the main characters' antics?

At any rate, knowing the "everybody dies" bit doesn't lower my arching eyebrow. I'm certainly interested.
  • Graham
I think he said it would cost 4 to 5 million to make
  • Prophecy_Projectz
I think hes got a good chance of making it, depending on the budget....
  • Christopher Marc
Couldn't he do this on his own with private investors? Then shop it around at film festivals...because I don't think a large studio is going to take a chance on a non-comedy Smith film...I'm just as interested in seeing the man evolve and try different genres....It's just his films don't make money in the box office and with studios rejecting a Spielberg project...Smith isn't going to have a chance in hell
  • Prophecy_Projectz

Well NOW I REALLY wanna see it!
  • Superman
I think we dodged a bullet. And I'll be one of those who fell in love with clerks and think smith does have it in him to make good movies outside of his comfort zone full of dicks and farts, but he's got to "man up" before that ever happens, meaning I guess grow up, put away the star wars toys and references to that shit since it's all old, and really make some kind of mature movie for fellow former star wars geeks who want to broaden their movie palette. Or maybe I'm full of shit and should just kill myself. Whatever.
  • gah
uh, why did he feel the need to give away the ending?
  • Thanks Peter Chen. Kevin Smith should have done something different about three movies ago, perhaps after Chasing Amy. A different genre, a different cast, whatever. Instead he's been chewing on his own tail, which is a shame.
  • Blackstar
I think I've seen this movie. It's called 'Life'.
  • Joseph Fritzl
i also have my doubts when kevin smith is claiming to be directing the darkest bleakest movie ever made as his first departure from 'dick and fart comedy'. but im interested enough to see what he would do.
i think that if he goes into it with that attitude of creating suchhh a bleak movie, it could get so over the top that it cant be taken seriously. with characters lives being ruined and everyone dying left and right, it could just be laughable at his attempt to do something 'depressing' rather then a legitimately good film. but who knows what hes really got in mind. i bet the script just isnt that great if its being turned down so fast and not really that 'there is no market for something this dark'
