William Shatner Responds to JJ Abrams

JJ Abrams made a comment earlier this month that Captain Kirk was originally written into Star Trek, but that William Shatner’s unwillingness to do a cameo nixed the scene from being shot. And of course, William Shatner has responded to JJ Abrams in his latest video blog, claiming that nobody ever offered him a cameo. “Maybe you wrote it, but it never presented itself to me,” snaps Shatner, before totally destroying his point by concluding that he “wouldn’t have wanted to do a cameo, because that you would have clipped that out.” But Shatner says it isn’t too late to bring Kirk back from the dead in a sequel. “If you make another one maybe you can think of ways of bringing Captain Kirk back to life. I brought him back to life in one of my books, very easily.” Watch the full video blog below.

Well, at least he was gentlemanly about it. It would be cool to see him in later films.
  • It sounded alot snarkier in writing then when Shatner said it. Maybe because of descriptions like "snaps Shatner, before totally destroying his point"
  • Is it just me, or does it look like the Shat wants to eat that poor woman's face when he's talking about dinosaur DNA?
  • japajoo
Shut up Shatner you bloated piece of @#$%
  • Elpizo
please just end it Shatner... you are no more :(
  • Superman
How does shatner still look so good at his age while Nimoy's a prune? Must be all the sex he's having with that chick. Keeps ya young.
  • dos
you guys know that's his daughter right? It says so on the video (either that or I'm seriously creeped out).

Bill Shatner is the only person who, time and time again, keeps bringing this whole issue back up to the surface. Let it go, man!

Your character died. End. Of. Story.

Apparently some people can't read... that lady was his daughter. Anyway, I think Shatner is missing the whole point, whether asked to be in the film or not is stupid. He really has no place as "Kirk" in the film. He could only really do a cameo or narrative kinda thing because..... it's a reboot!

It would be like having Keaton appear in Batman Begins as BATMAN just for the sake of being respectful... wtf? You can't have two Batmans on screen.

The story should always come first. Shatner should know that. But... at least he didn't come off sounding bad after that clip.

I don't think there should be a movie about Shatner. But I do think there should be a short about him on the DVD. Please, Abrams, with bacon on top?!
  • Jmoney
You guys really made that sound like he was going to go off on JJ Abrams. I think he was pretty straight forward and complementary to Abrams, he was just saying no one offered him a cameo. I'd almost bet that the Star Trek people went to a Shatner cronie and offered the cameo, but the cronie took it upon himself to say Shatner would never do a cameo, but never actually told shatner about it

I don't understand everyone who says Shatner has no reason to be in this movie. I thought the plot was some bad guys are going back in time to kill Kirk so Spock has to save him? Did I totally dream that up?
  • Jaysun
Here is what I think happened. Last year, Shatner was on the Howard Stern Show and proclaimed he wanted a starring role, and not a cameo. J.J. Abrams is a fan/friend of the show, and if he did not hear it, then someone told him about it. That's the line of communication I think occured.

Let's remember this is JJ Abrams we're talking about here. This guy loves viral marketing. I say it's possible that Shatner will be in the movie and this is all just a way to throw everyone off.
  • Captain Awesome
    Shatner.

    Let it go.
  • The E
Shatner will be in the movie. There's no reason for Shatner to keep doing all of this, even remotely. Its viral marketing to keep the movie buzz up near front page news since we've got a long wait for it now.
  • I agree that Shatner will be in the film, and is, along with Abrams and Co., putting on an act. Equals surprise + lots of media talk on opening day.
  • Tan
    Uh, forget about Shatner.

Whats up with this dinosaur DNA shit? is that stuff true?
  • brian
Has anyone considered that this is all fake? JJ's known for his viral marketing tools. Could he and Shatner be in cahoots and this is all just one big prank, so when Shatner DOES appear in the movie, everyone will be surprised. Why else would Shatner be so openly voiced about it, putting up video blogs and the like? Sure he'd be annoyed he isn't in the film but he's acting like a petulant child. Anyone else agree?

My god, he looks like he is going to explode. Have another glass of wine Shatner and shut about this new Trek film already. You might have been able to be in it if you had not agreed to....Kill Kirk. They could not have done that without you.
  • South Texas Terror
Shatner does commercials for local law firms in San Antonio. That guy will do anything for a check (priceline). The dude is a joke and at the most a marketing TOOL.
