Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, New York Movie Trailer

Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman has described his directorial debut Synecdoche, New York as his version of a horror movie. It’s a film about death, and man’s fear of mortality. I had the chance to se the film in Toronto, and I’m still unsure of what I saw. It is either brilliant or completely insane. It’s the type of movie that requires repeat viewings to understand the many layers of complexity. But it’s also one of those type of movies that is very dark and depressing in tone, so you might not be as inclined to see it the required amount of times. It’s also one of those movies that grows on you with time. The more I think about it, the more I want to see it again. I rarely give props to Sony Pictures Classics, but this is an extremely well cut trailer. Check it out and tell me what you think in the comments below!

Official Plot Synopsis: Synecdoche, New York explores nightmares that are all too realistic and human. Its hero, Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is a 40-year-old local theater director in Schenectady whose life is collapsing around him. His marriage to his artist wife Adele (Catherine Keener) is on its last legs while at the same time he is stricken with a series of increasingly catastrophic illnesses. He is afraid he will die any moment having never accomplished anything important in his life. When he receives a MacArthur Grant, he decides to use the windfall to stage a massive theater piece in NYC, determined to create The Great Piece of Art and leave something as true, honest and heartbreaking as life itself. It’s one of those rare films that deals with death, excruciating illness, gross bodily fluids, despair, heartbreak and bad sex but can still bring a twinkle to the eye.

You can watch the trailer in High Definition on Yahoo. Synecdoche, New York hits theaters on October 24th 2008.

  • I LOVE trailers like this. Love the Kaufman and the cast, and if its more dramatic and less weird I could see having a very good time watching it.

    Looks incredible.

I agree that 'Synedoche, New York,'
    appears to be one of those films;
    after watching it for the very first time;
leaves you with a sense of sceptical,
mysticism.Being caught in two minds and
still hanging left on the fence;simply
adds to the entertainment value because you never
    quite know with his films.
As Syd Field, screnwriter and lecturer;once said:
    'Without conflict,there is no drama.
    Conflict arises from situation.'
Yet again, it seems; (if the trailer is
anything to go by)that Kauffman has
    managed to pull another rabbit
out of the hat, this time as a writer
    and director.
It seems, many a screenwriter; could learn
    from his example.

wow, very impressed....I heard it's been getting mixed reviews, but this trailer is nothing less than amazing

michelle williams should be in everything

    go kauffman!
  • dave
The advertisement popping up in the end is fucking obnoxious.

    Anybody know the second song?

    "i'm just a little person
    one person in a sea
    of many little people..."

If I Google a song's lyrics in quotes, with the word 'lyrics' at the end, and there are no results, I'm scared that this song does not exist outside of one person's obscure little CD collection, and I'll never hear that song again. So... scared...

    Haunting... in the greatest way.

I have a feeling this film will terrify and haunt me the same way There Will Be Blood had for the last few months. I just hope I'll be able to watch SNY more than twice.

Forgot to ask: anyone know the song at the end w/the woman and piano? "I'm just a little person/one person in a sea/of many little people"? Thanks in advance.
  • George
Looks like it could be something special. Thought the trailer was really good and then it got to the end and I recognised the old woman than Hoffman. I mean stop me if I'm wrong but is that the librarian from the opening of Ghostbusters?!
  • Sorry
I would let that trailer have its way with me sexually

The movie looks to be amazing and beautiful. i can't wait to see it. Sort of wish that the trailer hadn't given away that he works on the play for over 17 years though, would have liked to found that out when watching the movie, seems like it would have been a nice surprise to find out that's the direction the movie takes.
Also gotta love how many woman actors make up the cast. I'm always hearing people say, "how many movies cast women over 30?" or something in the same vein. Well, this movie seems to be made up of women over 30. Nice touch.
  • Steelo
this looks like a double watcher
  • God damn I can't wait to see this movie.

A must, no...a gotta ,no...A need to see!
  • Crazydays
Anyone else notice the simerlarity between the photo at the top of the thread and the scene in Vanilla Sky where Tom Cruise places all his unread memos over his lounge floor??
  • I love Kaufman but I could foresee myself finding this movie incredibly frustrating.

And I can kinda see the Vanilla Sky connection (overall) there, Crazydays.
  • hawk
    looks terrific.
  • Mr. Comedian
@ Sean: I'm sure you Googled. Looks like Jon Brion did the music, so it's likely something new and original done with Aimee Mann.

Films like this are the markers of hope for cinema.

blew my mind, i want to see it NOW!

I had the exact same reaction. I came out of the film disliking it. Feeling it was an over-indulgent mess by a brilliant guy who should have been reined in. But then I was still thinking about it the next day...and the day after that. And I started feeling like it's actually a great movie, not a disaster after all. How odd. But it is disturbing and depressing, and I found it really, really long in parts. But I will try to watch it again.

I realized after the fact what it's actually about. There are clues along the way. And ultimately, it's a film I'm glad he made...even if it is a "disaster."
  • I already love it.

P.S: Adaptation got robbed at the oscars
  • Jeffrey Garten
fucking piece of shit assshole kaufman

couldn't make a bad film if he tried

    it's bull shit

Now this is a film I want to see! Once the giant forested soundstage and zepplin came by, I became really intrigued. Looks like a film with big crazy ideas and a larger than life story. These are the types of films I want to see more often.
  • Justin
I am so excited for this movie.
  • gocitizen
This truly looks like an amazing film. The idea alone is great, but when you know that idea is in Kauffman's hands, it hints at a higher level.

Some very good visuals in the trailer, almost heartbreaking in their simplicity. It speaks well for CK's transition into directing.

Is Hoffman as brilliant as he seems in the trailer?
  • sean
    @ Comedian,

Thanks! (I did google and) I'm pretty sure you're right (that it's Mann). I'm watching another thread on IMDB that has users looking for the song as well. Only time will tell... hopefully.
  • Jon
Peter, can you tell me if the movie goes into detail about the play, the massive sets, and what the massive production is like? Because if the main focus is him dieing and becoming gay, I really don't want to see the film. I wanted to see a piece of theater development turn into an epic, or something at least like Colonial Williamsburg is or Howard Hughes' Hells Angels.
  • Jake
For all those asking about the song in the trailer.

    "I'm Just A Little Person"
Written by Charlie Kaufman & Jon Brion

The song at the end is called "little people".
On itunes it says it's by Jon Brion, as are the rest of the songs on the Synecdoche Ny soundtrack, however the name of the female singer in the song is Deanna Storey.
