It feels as if I am typing this item behind a curtain that flutters with the energy of Nicole Kidman’s online hecklers and haterz. Today the trades report that the actress has signed to star in The 8th Wonder, a new globe-trotting action adventure tent pole that aspires to “be to Raiders of the Lost Ark what the Bourne movies are to James Bond movies: a character-driven, treasure-hunting thriller.” Further details were not revealed, but the flick will be produced by Kidman and Laurence Mark (I Robot, The Lookout, and yes, Cutthroat Island) from a script to be written by Simon Kinberg (Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, Jumper, X3).

While her Botox really kills me—every time I see a still from Australia, I think about blowfish and bad advice—Kidman’s performances in Van Sant’s To Die For and von Trier’s Dogville hulahoop the majority of A-list actresses out there. I’ll hold judgement until a director is announced, but if the project is in the vein of Romancing the Stone and Indiana Jones rather than another same-old SFX vapid-fest like Tomb Raider and National Treasure, it could be a welcome monkey wrench in the genre’s boy’s club. Cue a guy lifting up an Arnold Palmer in Hollywood and omnipotently dishing, “Yeah, but she isn’t bankable.”

    I smell FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Epic Fail
  • quadrangleman
That just makes me want to watch Romancing the Stone for probably the 20th time.
  • I wonder if she remembered the last time someone pitched something to Nicole as "It's just like this!" (I'm talking The Golden Compass here.)
  • BadWasabi
Somewhere in the back I can hear Nicole Kidman screaming for attention from main stream public
  • Jerry B Good
Why are they still banking on Kidman? Wasn't that trillion dollar cgi epic with the polar bears an epic disappointment?

    And before that was what.......bewitched?

    She's a never-been.

    Nicole Kidman:

    · Good actress
    · Bad investment

Toss in the writer of Jumper and X3, two of the glossiest, worst-written sci fi movies of the decade, and I have to agree with Charles. Epic fail.

OI was almost OK with it until they got to Kinburg, that said I'd still give her my "globe-trotting action adventure tent pole"
  • Deck Mackenzie
Wow did I miss something? What's with all the hate on Nickie Kidd all of a sudden? It must be an internet thing, please explain it to me. And Kinberg wrote Mr. and Mrs. Smith and X2 both of which I loved, so we'll see.

BadWasabi, I think you're on to something. I think she really wants that main stream popularity.

This movie is being put out by Fox, which is owned by her friend Rupert Murdoch. I think Fox is the only studio that will give her the bucks. Australia is being put out by Fox and some of her upcoming films are by Fox.

This woman just needs to disappear for a while & be a mother to her child like she always said she would.

excellent use of a picture from To Die For.
  • Justin
While I still don't like her much, Eyes Wide Shut proved to me she can act, but this sounds like another National Treasure. Ugh.
  • BadWasabi
    scetchy,

Exactly my point, I think this is a desperate attempt at being relevant again. I agree with you, she should take a break and come back in a couple of years with a serious flick, not an Indy/Tomb Raider/National Treasure ripoff.

why not? a movie like this is only as good as the script. Beyond that, I see no reason why Kidman couldn't deliver a good character. It will either work or it won't, but you can't really pass judgement until it gets underway.

Tomb Raider would have been a great franchise if they developed a better story, steered clear of the corn, and scored the films properly.

i am fairly certain that this women is an alien.
  • jamie
could be good, as long as there is minimal cgi

I said in another forum that Nicole hasn't done a great movie since Dead Calm, and I was lambasted. lol

There have been a couple of roles since then I thought maybe were above average, but nothing that really blew me away. And she gets absolute top dollar to do it as well.

    Dead Calm rules!
  • Marshall
    Nicole Kidman? No Thanks!
They might as well flush the $180 million dollar movie budget down the crapper now. We've all seen our share of crap Nicole Kidman movies, and enough is enough.
  • Kidman is box office poison and she's getting up there in years so I don't know about this.
