Iron Man 2 in 3D? Favreau Wants to Shoot Scenes in IMAX!

Like many of you, when I first saw The Dark Knight on the IMAX screen, I knew then that Hollywood had no choice but to follow Nolan’s lead, at least on some of the big tentpole films. How could they not? The footage was just that incredible. Our friends at Collider were at an Iron Man DVD press conference today when director Jon Favreau announced that he would love to shoot part of Iron Man 2 with IMAX cameras. Not only that but the director also said he would love to shoot the sequel in 3D. Will it happen? It will all come down to costs.

Seeing Iron Man flying around the screen in 3D could be very cool, but also limiting. Filming in 3D means that you have to do shorter cuts so that the audience won’t suffer from eye fatigue. However, I think Marvel would be stupid not to shoot some sequences in IMAX. The result for The Dark Knight is undeniable. Many fans went to the theaters twice just to see it again on the huge screen. An extra $60 million from the IMAX box office is certainly enough to at least consider the idea.

Discuss: Do you think they should shoot Iron Man 2 sequences using IMAX cameras? What about 3D?

I would like to see Iron Man 2 in IMAX, but not 3-D. I don't think it'll add enough of pizazz to the movie to justify a 3-D showing.

And, in my opinion, every time I hear that a movie is going to be shown in 3-D, I always think that it cheapens the movie a little bit. It automatically gets filed away in my mind as "too cartoony" or as trying to hard to be too gimmicky.
  • lancelewis
i hate 3D. it gives me a headache. every time. whichever process they use. dont like it. bad idea.
  • A Better Class of Criminal
    No 3-D... but IMAX...
After TDK, it should be a given.

Hopefully in the near future an entire full leangth feature will be shot entirely on IMAX.
    Batman 3 perhaps?

i feel the same as the above comments, in that every time i hear 3D i think gimmick.

i wasn't the biggest fan of ironman to begin with, so i'd like to see fav focus on a risky script, rather than scramble to see what tricks and gimmicks he can pull out, to top the first film. in fact, this announcement pre-emptively makes me roll my eyes.

i've only seen an i-max camera operated once, and like nolan said, the noise factor makes intimate/dialogue driven scenes very difficult. so until technology fixes that problem, i'm not sure if a full film is in our near future, but man-o-man was the i-max remarkable in TDK.

No 3-D, no IMAX... Just smell-o-vision.
  • doly
No 3-D but IMAX would be cool. When I think of a movie in 3-D it makes me think of a cheap horror flick, headaches, and not knowing what the heck is going on in the movie.

    IMAX - YES!!!!
    3D - NO!
  • Melvin
Don't like 3-D! And I would love to see some IMAX scenes or filming the whole movie with IMAX cameras... I loved the scenes in TDK!!

This will be great, the more blockbusters using IMAX, the more economically viable it will become and maybe there will follow some breakthroughs in the technology to increase length and shorten load times.

I've never seen any movie and thought having it in 3D would improve it, always feels forced and distracting. Hope Favreau is trying to bite off too much and it feels gimmicky and doesn't add to the film.

    IMAX all the way.

3-D died in the 1980s with movies like Friday the 13th Part 3 and Jaws 3-D.
  • Prophecy_Projectz
    Marvel tries too hard.....
  • Ryan Parker
why not shoot some scenes in IMAX 3d, that would give the audience a choice to see it in 3d or not, and also give an even BIGGER imax experience.
  • Cody
    I prefer IMAX, no 3-D.
  • JP Dyno
    Imax would be great.
I still think 3d is a gimmick. Ill never pay to go see a movie where i have to put another pair of glasses over the top of my glasses.
  • sean coates
3D is too Disneyland, and as JP said "gimmicky" keep it Imax just like the Dark Knight did.
  • I love 3D but a lot of people don't - maybe you can choose a 3D or non 3D show?

They'll figure it out, THEY'RE the studio...

IMAX cameras are going to be used more often after the success of TDK....but IMAX theaters in general are becoming more popular I could see the theaters becoming more local...3D on the other hand seems like a fad, I could be wrong Avatar could change my thinking on this...but these 3D movies have been limited to concert and kid flicks, I've heard Beouwolf was excellent in 3D but I thought that movie would have worked better as live-action so I couldn't enjoy it ...watching the mouths and facial expressions not matching the voice overs was a distraction...if a 300 million budget Cameron film can't change the industry nothing will....
  • Jojo
fuck u guys. 3D rocks. James Cameron will prove it with AVATAR.
  • Logan
I am all for some of the scenes to be shot in IMAX. But I agree with most here, 3-D is not the way to go. It's childish and degrades the movie in my opinion. I refused to see Spy Kids when I was younger and I refused to see Journey to the Center of the Earth(also b/c Brandon Fraser sucks). If they have the SD version as well as 3D, then fine. But I think advancing IMAX technology for easier workflow in the field so that more films can adapt it is a higher priority. Not some stupid 3D glasses and a Disney movie I can get out of a cereal box.
  • optimusprime
IMAX is better, but I still like 3D.
  • Holy Shit! (Matt)
I'm not against IMAX. But to have to travel another 2 1/2 hrs to see a movie that's must see is painful.
  • Whiskey
3D is good for animated films, with live action it just feels cheap.
But I can see some IMAX flyng scenes shot, stuff to establish the scope of what Stark is going into. I think actual fast paced action might be a bit much for people to take without getting sick.
  • South Texas Terror
IMAX makes everything better. 3D and Imax would be crazy but if Im gonna pay extra for the ticket I want better 3D glasses. I hate those flat plastic ones
  • Joe
I would love to see Iron Man 2 in IMAX.

    3-D, not so much.
  • Paige
i really don't think an iron man two will be good at all, but i didn't really like the first one all that much either.
and i hate 3D, those glasses are so annoying.
  • Superman
Yay let's see cliche villains and mediocre performances EVEN BIGGER!!!
  • Goobity
The quotes say what Favreau would 'love to' do. Not what will ultimately be done. There's not even a script yet, folks. These are speculations.
  • Sockin
    Please please please no 3D.
  • Brandon
I had no problems with beowulf in 3D, but I really don't care for it.

    IMAX - YES, it's beautiful.
  • Iron Matt
    @Superman

I believe they already released Superman Returns in IMAX.

    Zing!
  • Agent Iron J
Ha! Good one Iron Matt. Zing!
  • Why would anyone used IMAX? Nolan and Favreau are fools that are going to end up costing their studios costly $$$ and time. They can shoot the same scenes with high resolution digital cameras and blow it up to a screen one hundred times the size of IMAX, why waste money that could be spent on better ADR or post production or something on modifying cameras?
  • 3-D no, IMAX hells yeah!
  • Captain Awesome
"They can shoot the same scenes with high resolution digital cameras and blow it up to a screen one hundred times the size of IMAX, why waste money that could be spent on better ADR or post production or something on modifying cameras?"

You don't know what the fuck you're talking about.
  • Agent Iron J
    Hear hear Captain Awesome!
  • Fir3Wolf
3-D would be interesting but I think they should just focus on filming parts using the IMAX cameras instead since like TDK it will look amazing and would cause me to see it twice if I don't catch it in IMAX the first time around.
  • Joe
IMAX definitely, 3D maybe. I think maybe if some bits had a little light 3D to make things "pop," that might be a good way to go, and to maybe only offer 3D to select theaters, or only IMAX theaters, or to have both showing and be able to choose which one you want to see.
  • Iron Matt
Captain Awesome, you just made my day.
  • 790
IMAX and 3D are both gimmicks.
Can't believe Fav's thinks Iron Man needs this crap!
I guess I was right about fav's. He got lucky with Iron Man,,,, now see Fav's for the real chump he is.

3D,,,, piss off Jojo,,, Avatar allready sucks IMO,,,
  • jj gonzo
