With Matthew Vaughn off directing Kick-Ass and his once-proposed $300 million Thor epic but a memory, DJ Caruso (Disturbia, Eagle Eye) is now expressing interest in bringing Marvel’s Son of Odin to the big screen. In an interview with IESB he said…

“…I would definitely tackle it and I sort of wrestled with it before and I was always a fan of Thor growing up as a kid. I know that they [Marvel] have a script, but there’s something, there’s a fear I have about Thor and depending on what Thor story you want to tell, whether you want to bring Thor into the modern world or if you want to go back to Asgard…”

He added that he’s even had talks with Marvel about the film, but it all comes down to the screenplay. Last year, screenwriter Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, longtime Thor fan/collector) described his script to the Daily Herald as…

“It’s going to be like a super hero origin story, but not one about a human gaining super powers, but of a god realizing his true potential. It’s the story of a Old Testament god who becomes a new Testament god. I think it’s going to surprise a lot of people.”

And Vaughn was attracted to the project due to its pricey vision of Norse mythology, saying, “It’s very much a Marvel superhero story but against the backdrop of something you’ve never seen before.” All of which lends credence to a storyline focusing on Asgard and Thor’s villainous brother, Loki.

In the past, Peter hasn’t been too convinced that this character will work on film (Adventures in Babysitting excluded?), but mixing LOTR and Conan-like fantasy, a timeline that can jump across thousands of years, and a huge budget sits well with me. I like the idea of seeing iconic comic characters placed in film genres like War and Pulp Noir rather than running around another modern day metropolis; though Thor could go that direction as well. Caruso is still circling Y: The Last Man with Shia LaBeouf (and hopefully not Alicia Keys), a property that is nearly as challenging to pull off as this one in my opinion (I’ve got 15 issues to go).

And in a report on 20th Century Fox’s future plans, Variety says the studio is mulling “the possibility of more X-Men spinoffs, including a young-X-Men project as well as Deadpool, based on a character played by Ryan Reynolds in Wolverine. The studio is even considering reviving the Daredevil property.”

In the summer of 2003, the groanable Ben Affleck-starrer coasted to a disappointing $102 million, and led many to predict the cooling of the comic book film, especially after the hokey 2005 Elektra spin-off (which Johnson produced). Recently, Jason Statham threw his name in for a DD remake. While I’m not adverse to that hypothetical casting, since a reboot would remain parked at Fox and not Marvel Studios, I do hope it stays on ice a while longer. Peter has suggested that the character is perfect for a live-action HBO series, and I agree. There is a humanity and struggle—not to mention room for a great procedural drama—to Daredevil that would be better explored on a smaller screen rather than in a me-too blockbuster.

Discuss: DJ Caruso for Thor. Why not? What’s the argument for a big budget Thor working as a Marvel Studios film and vice versa? Is a Daredevil reboot needed? On one hand, Batman Begins, on the other, The Incredible Hulk. Would you prefer a hypothetical HBO series, like Slashfilm’s crew, instead?

  • Peter Chen
Peter Chen does not like Thor. Peter Chen wants a Daredevil sequel, not a reboot. Make it more family-friendly this time though, like Fantastic Four. Get Tim Story to direct.

    Peter Chen has spoken.
  • Craig
Craig might consider the idea of the film Thor. Craig wants a complete overhaul of the Daredevil franchise and hopes that Fox loses the rights soon. Make it less family oriented (Fantastic Four eww) and find a good director that can re-invent Daredevil. Get Chris Nolan to direct.

    Craig has spoken.
  • Thankyoufor
Dj caruso would just rip off some other movie for thor like highlander or conan he doesnt know how to be original
  • orange cinema
if caruso decides to do Y: the last man, then NO thor for him!!!! YTLM deserves someone who is willing to devote many years to the trilogy that the comic book series DESERVES - not someone who is going to be distracted by another major franchise trilogy. if caruso was going to approach YTLM like nolan has batman (other one-shots in between) then sure, i'd be all for it. but Thor is just as big of a project as Y, and i think both would suffer from a juggling act.

that said, i agree with the common thinking that if thor was stylized ala LOTR, it could truly be an original comic book film, instead of the very formulaic films that are coming out of the wet-works - yes ironman, i'm talking to you! also, Loki is a crazy enough villian to be a fun and worthy adversary if they darken his ass up.

a while ago, someone mentioned that 'Daredevil' would make a great SHO or HBO series, and i think that'd be brilliant. Not only would the lawyer thingy make an excellent backdrop, but it'd be a new direction for the comic book adaptation, which will soon suffer burnout if we're not careful - and i believe this wholeheartedly: if they keep pumping out the formula story/film, the world is going to tire fast.

@ craig - chris nolan and his brother should not write/direct every f-ing comic genre film! c'mon man, this idea is just getting rediculous.

    @ peter chen

holy shit have you even read daredevil?! this story is not a 'family freindly' affair AT ALL. i can't tell if you're joking or not, but i can't imagine that you've read the frank miller or kevin smith tales, and would still say something like that. those stories are the heart and tone of what daredevil should truly be. holy shit i hope you're kidding.

FF was a shit-terrible franchise, and the man without fear deserves much better - in fact all comic adaptations deserve better. (the fact that they made $ does not equal quality filmmaking)

HOLY SHIT I HOPE YOU'RE KIDDING!! those two titles are NOTHING alike!

Thing to remember, with all the casting news about Cap and the consideration for this film, its all a set up for the Avengers movie - so a)the casting has to work, and cost less than the 500 mil TDK brought in and b) they eventually have to bring it modern day, both with Cap AND Thor.

I'd love to see a LOTR type epic for Thor, problem is, it has to be done in one movie. I just don't see Thor or someone like Ant Man drawing more than one film. The mainstream appeal of the characters simply isn't there. If they went complete Norse mytho and ignored the comic book aspect, I could see it developing into more than one flick - simply because the love for Norse mythology is out there and it hasn't really been touched on in a grand scale IMO.
  • Captain Awesome
    lol
  • YoungZe
A Daredevil reboot would be awesome! This character needs a well-made movie with a different actor.
  • Oi Vey
Is Thor really as accessable as Iron Man, as a 'not as famous' hero? I've always thought not, and he seems to be far fetch..yes, more so than a man in an iron suit or a super-soldier, or even a giant green man.
  • Peter Chen
    @ orange cinema

    Peter Chen is never joking.

    Peter Chen has spoken.
  • AHAHAHAHAHAH
What the hell was wrong with The Incredible Hulk?

It was fun, it was well acted, it was well paced. And if you think there was too much action, remember there will probably be a lot of deleted scenes on the blu-ray.

    Regardless, TDK forever.
  • Captain Awesome
It's amazing the effect Chris Nolan had on the comic movie industry. "Reboot" is the new word for comic companies now. Even if a films only a 7 years old?
  • Ziltoid
Dear God, if Caruso directs then Shia Lebeouf is going to have to take enough steroids to be Thor....Hopefully this doesn't work out because I really want to see this movie made well, and frankly Caruso won't be able to pull it off.

    @Capt. Awesome:
Reboot, remake, same thing I suppose. Just Hollywood trying to continue giving crappy ideas funding while ignoring the good ones.
  • Devindra Hardawar
@Hunter Rob Bowman did Elektra, although MSJ is guilty of inflicting Ghost Rider upon us.

The Daredevil theatrical cut is pretty much shit, but there's a lot to like in the director's cut IMO. The fight scenes are cut better, there's more Bullseye, and they even *cut out* shitty scenes. They didn't fix the cheesy origin stuff though, oh well.
  • Super Nacho
I never knew DJ Caruso directed Disturbia...And now Eagle Eye. I guess the next news is that Shia LaBeouf is Donald Blake. xD
  • Eric
Vincent D'Onofrio for THOR! He definitely pulled it off in Adventures in Babysitting.

@Peter Chen. May God have mercy on your soul for trying to extol the virtues of a kid friendly Daredevil. What is that?
  • Hendo
OMG Will Smith should play Thor! He'd be perfect for the part since in the comics he more or less looks like Steve Rogers with long hair! -_-
  • Why does Matthew Vaughn constantly leave projects for others to ruin and settles on lackluster adaptations like Stardust?
  • Hunter Stephenson
    @ devindra

Corrected. Johnson produced the film, was credited with the characters, and played it up to the press. And yeah, he also made Ghostrider (and Ghostrider 2?) i.e. Johnson, please put your hands up and slowly back away from the comics.

As for the DD director's cut, it has its fans/defenders similar to Alexander's. Alas, still a disappointment. And given the amount of pre-release hype from Johnson---mostly due to fanboys' mehs and to save face---it didn't deliver.
  • fanboy d
the last live-action marvel tv show was BLADE.

    *ahem*
  • Oi Vey
    @Kid Mooney

I think Stardust was lackluster as well. I thought they were trying waaayyy to hard and the effects were awful. I mean, it looked like a Sci-Fi Channel movie. It does have it's charm, but it's NO Princess Bride
  • Shogun Seth
After me and one of my friends saw the Dark Knight we were trying to think of another Superhero that could be adapted into such a good movie. The first one we thought of was Daredevil. If you read any of the Bendis run then you know that it could easyly be made into a very interesting movie.
I think Thor ONLY works if you at least start in Asguard. If anyone of the street comes in and had no idea who Thor, Odin, Loki, and so on are...then they are not going to buy it when hes shoulder to shoulder with Cap and Ironman.
  • Tobi
Daredevil would make a really good HBO or Showtime series alongside Dexter and such...the fact that Matt Murdock is also a lawyer would make for a good story that hopefully wouldn't get boring after the first few episodes. But for sure a new DD film should now be made with Fox. If Marvel Studios someday gets it, I'd love to see what they can do.

As for Thor, I think the character is kind of silly looking first off and I believe modern audiences will not take it seriously.

In an unrelated note, Michael C. Hall for Captain America..
  • edog
    Howard the Duck reboot
  • Jordan2099
Holy shit. First of all Daredevil came out in the winter, not the summer, and it did not underperform when it came out. I love all these cheap shots at Daredevil because its so easy to make fun of Affleck. Second the directors cut is decent, and when is 102 million a failure for a b list character? Its not like Daredevil had the marketing machine like Iron Man did, or the name brand of Batman or Spidey. Why is it I never hear Hellboy reffered to as a failure? Is it becasue Ron Perlman is a "hip" actor, and the comic is quasi-indie so its cool that it doesn't make Spiderman money.

You guys are so biased its retarded.
  • Robert Merritt
Not only that, Daredevil came out the weekend where the east coast was hit by one of the biggest snow storms in years.
  • matblacknavy
daredevil sucked and needs to be redone
@ jordan2099 hellboy wasnt as accesible as dardevil no one new what BPRD was. daredevil had a huge marketing machine behind it just blew chunks
