We’re pretty sure some type of “clarification” will be sent out shortly regarding the following statement from Michael Caine, but for now, it’s the first confirmation from someone involved in the Batman franchise about new villains and casting choices. And it’s HUGE. The ubiquitous rumors about Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin will undoubtedly escalate after this. Here’s what Caine told MTV’s Splash Page

“I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, ‘Are we going to make [a sequel to The Dark Knight]?’ They said yeah. I said, ‘How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says ‘I’ll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said, ‘Shit, they’ve done it again!’” [Laughs]

Caine seemed to reiterate his certainty, confirming that he’d also read the rumors in the British tabloids and that “[Warner Bros.] already got [Depp and Hoffman] in mind.” Make of this what you will. Director Christopher Nolan is on vacation and hasn’t publicly stated any storylines or details for a sequel or even confirmed that he’s making another Batman film. Though, he’s long expressed his vision as a trilogy. Caine confirms that he hasn’t spoken with the director about a third installment.

Recently, Depp denied rumors that he’s up for The Riddler while on a radio show but admitted that “it’d be a fun gig”: five words that have been dissected and put under Geekland’s microscope. Meanwhile, Hoffman has been mum on the subject. Back in July, the ever ambitious National Enquirer reported an anonymous inside source as saying…

“(Producers) are convinced that the role of the Riddler is perfect for Depp. Johnny’s a pro. He’ll be able to take direction from director Chris Nolan and still make the character his own. And what better Penguin is there than Philip Seymour Hoffman.”

Screenwriter David Goyer has stated that a sequel would likely focus on lesser known villains that haven’t been depicted on screen before a la Batman Begins. And Christopher Nolan seems to prefer actors in villain roles who are not incredibly famous. Moreover, while dismissing rumors that Harvey Dent/Two Face would return, Aaron Eckhart speculated that Nolan wants to make a few smaller pics before he heads back to Gotham.

Discuss: Whoa. What do you think? Is this an example of the Internetz wishing things ever so slightly into reality?

  • Justin
Well, of course WB wants Hoffman and Depp, but what about Nolan? I kind of doubt he would have already been in casting talks if he really doesn't even have a script or story yet.
  • KeanE
    Sounds cool...but I doubt it...
  • Kenny
Mmmm, this could be good and perhaps excellent if it proves to be true.
  • Eric
Goyer already said that he would want to tackle villains who haven't been in film yet. Plus Nolan's still on his sabbatical, anything some random WB exec says is random bullshit.
  • Matt
Until official words come I'll try not to get too pumped but this news almost blows my mind.
  • erik
Well if Nolan DOES decide to have the Penguin in the next movie, PSH is a perfect choice.
  • Bobcat
Interesting, that's for sure. But I'd be inclined to agree with the person above me, it would seem unlikely that Nolan has already been in casting talks. And from what I understood from TDK, he's pretty particular about that stuff... Nolan after all was the one who was so adamant about Ledger, yeah?

As for those 2 choices, I could see it being pulled off.
  • Dan
if this is true, I'll die an incredibly happy man.
  • Matt
that would be cool! but should i believe it?
  • feed me a stray cat
    whoa.

this has to be a joke. it's too good to be true. i will try and remain skeptical
  • MKW
    Bye Nolan.
  • True or.. wacko!?
  • sari
Only ONE villian this time. Please.
  • Yeah, I think Michael was joking with us. He's heard the rumors and is just playing along. That scamp!
  • Before Heath Ledger was cast, didn't the studio suggest Steve Carell or Robin Williams to play the Joker? Yeah its the same here, they Want Johnny Depp to play the Riddler but in the end, depending on if the Riddler is in the movie, it will be someone we didn't expect. My choice for the next villain is still Hush, he could definitely fit in Chris Nolan's world. For God's sake he tried to kill his own parents, how twisted does one man have to be?

On a completely unrelated note, You all remind me of my father, I HATED HIM!!!
  • Steelo
    don't believe the hype
  • jixx3r
In trying to top Heath's performance, Depp and Hoffman would be poor choices. The expectations on Depp and Hoffman would be too great too overcome, because in most people's eyes they're the perfect people to play those respective characters. In the situation with Heath playing the Joker, he was an unexpected choice, also a choice many people doubted.
  • Aaron
I don't understand why some people think sequels have to 'top' the previous film. Just make a good movie! New ideas not bigger explosions.
  • Mark O
Yeah like kenton sam said, hush would be awesome for the sequel. But who would play him???
  • Hanger 51
    Hugh Jackman for Hush !
  • orange cinema
i agree that of course this is what the studio wants, but the only thing that matters is what nolan wants.

and as for us fanboys: remember how bad we wanted venom until it was forced upon raimi - and we all know how that turned out. lets hope the same doesn't happen to nolan and his brilliant franchise.
  • Indiefilm
    NO PENGUIN!!!!

ugh, I'll wait till Nolan tackles another project. I'd like to see Two-Face return and Scarecrow and maybe Joker. I love the concept that Gothams its own 'universe of characters' running around, committing crimes that batman must fight. I don't care to see something that simply introduces villians every film like the old Batman pictures.
  • The_Jezzus
Sounds to me like we should leave the casting to experienced professionals. Nolan will have the final say and all thistalk about a third film would piss me off if I was Nolan.

Depp and Hoffman are A-List actors, and would be much harder to contain than Aaron and Heath. Plus what theme for this movie could possibly tie these two together? Now that's a question I'd like to hear people on hear answer.....The dark Knight was great because the characters fit Nolan's vision.
  • Meli
This sounds like the studio talking about which villians/actors THEY
would like to see in the next Batman flick. I'm not buying any
rumor on the next film until Nolan is signed on and the screenplay
    is underway.
  • Hunter Stephenson
mickey rourke for clayface i say. (i still think clayface could work in this universe).
  • turok
OMFG!!!! Just add Kristen Bell as Harley Queen and you got the perfect movie!!!!
  • South Texas Terror
Why does everyone keep sayin he will use unknown villians and unknown actors? Look at TDK, Two-face and joker have been seen plenty of times and aaron and heath have done plenty of movies.
  • nick
would be great, but im not believing anything to nolan confirms it himself.
  • Hayden
on another note will smith might play the isaiah bradley captain america.
  • Danatic
Wouldn't they have to do Riddler for Hush to work though? Batman 4?
  • REAL6
    Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. HELL FUCKING NO......

Use villians not introduced yet plus use no name actors!!!
  • Christine
I will be extremely disappointed if this is true. I'm all for Hoffman, but I'm tired of Depp and I can't and don't care to see him as The Riddler. In fact, I don't even really want to see The Riddler in the first place. I liked Nolan's original plan. Use a new fucking villain.
  • BadWasabi
I say too good to be true. Sounds like this WB exec guy reads movie blogs and rumors, and decided to take them to the next level.
  • LeBigMac
    I say

    Yay on Hoffman

    Nay on Depp

Sorry Depp, don't think you could disappear in the role and go unrecognized (a la Heath as the Joker). It would be too distracting.

Hoffman could pull it off more so.

Regardless, this news story will end up being BS.
  • jomama
i wouldn't mind seeing the rumored hugo weaving take on the question mark. but i agree with most of that, that nolan will pick someone unexpected and i am cool with that. he hasnt failed us yet.
  • emily
PSH could work. Though I highly doubt this rumor is true. I won't believe anything till it's confirmed by Nolan. He said he was going to take a break after TDK and until he's back, this is all just heresay.
  • Mark
I would love those 2 for the roles of the Riddler and the Penguin but I don't buy it for a minute.

I just don't think these 2 work well in the traditional sense in Nolan's Batman Universe.

IMO The Dark Knight wasn't a Batman movie, it may have featured him but it was a movie about Gotham and it depends what direction they go another Gotham movie like TDK or a Batman movie like Batman Begins.

As much as I liked TDK, I would prefer it to be Batman movie rather than Gotham movie and if they want to have villain centric film then have a spin-off that's all about the Villain.

What I want from the Riddler and Penguin characters in this Batman universe is too be part of these future movies that we hope happen but I don't want to see them on screen.

I see the Penguin as Keyser Soze type, a man not see but feared and has his hand in everything. Like Soze he would be a man or a name that pulling the strings on everything that the underworld does and that they don't have a clue.

As for the Riddler, well I think if he's done wrong he's a cheap knock-off the Joker. I would make the Riddler like the Zodiac and like John Doe in Se7en as well as Jigsaw from Saw.

As I was saying before I don't want the Riddler to be seen in the next Batman movie but I do want him to be part of the story. I want the cause and effect of his actions to play a big role which would in effect make him the 2nd Villain but someone who Batman isn't fighting directly. The Riddler plot of the story would in effect make Batman make use of his detective skills and having him chase down the Riddler while also trying to fight off the other Villain of the film as well as trying to save some of the victims of the Riddler's riddles.
  • A Better Class of Criminal
This is just a rumor, but a mostly good rumor.
Hoffman would be freaking perfect for the Penguin... and I don't think he's any more an A-lister than Heath Ledger was.
Depp, however, I'm not so sure on. He's definitely an overused actor in a lot of movies. He could potentially work, but I'd rather see someone else.

In the end, as allways.... Nolan's Will be done.
  • What the hell? This article proves nothing! It's right in the quote... Caine spoke to an (unnamed) WB executive (who may or may not have anything to do with the movie!!!), nowhere does it say this is the intended route.

As said by others here, until Nolan or someone involved in the MOVIE (not just WB) says anything, this means nada!
  • Sauce
Who would be better for the Penguin? Almost anyone...sigh. Including Danny Devito. Take away the ducks and the rocket launching penguins and Danny's Penguin could live in Nolan's Batman universe.

And Depp....hmm. I dunno. Not crazy about the idea but I wasn't crazy about Heath until TDK came out so..
  • Anti-Septic
I can't help but think the Riddler is gonna end up like Captain Jack Sparrow. Just no way I see Johnny Depp as "The Riddler"

Now, Seymore Hoffman as "The Penguin" at least sounds plausible. Although, the very thought of watching another Penguin/Riddler Batman vehicle is very depressing.

A new script please, dont wanna see this recycled Batman script.
  • A Better Class of Criminal
    I somewhat agree with Mark.

Perhaps not having the Riddler show up until the end would make him all the more terrifying as an unseen John Doe type of serial killer.

The Penguin however should be the new leader of the mob. He should be the CEO of a competing company to Wayne Enterprises. And not only does this company sell weapons to the military... it secretly sells them to the mob. Now that the mob leadership is wiped out a la Two-Face, The Penguin should fill that gap and take over the mob in order to secure his investments. He could also get involved with politicians and Gotham officials to buy them off. Using the nickname "Penguin" he can remain the anonymous leader of the mob and still stay the CEO of his company.

It would also be interesting to see Catwoman be involved in this somehow.

This of course is just my opinion.
  • w smith
I can't imagine either character in Nolan's Batman. They're both complete cartoon characters. The Riddler has some potential - but definitely not the Penguin
  • suzy
i agree! the Riddler is just more plausible. that, to me, is what made the joker so terrifying. he is a whack job who for intense and purposes could actually exist.
  • Roberto
Like both of those guys just fine, but these are lame, obvious choices.
  • Chromey
A studio executive was talking out his ass? Say it ain't so.
  • Jon
I hope some WB executive gets fired for those remarks.
  • Not a good idea.
  • /kyle
I assume these choices and this rumor are the studio execs talking about what they want and what they will approach Nolan with but the scribe as mentioned a penchant for the eccentric, more unrealized villains of the Gotham Realm. I would guess Nolan is on the same wavelength of his scribe and not the heads of the studio.

These choices are great (and safe from a business standpoint) but I don't expect it. I expect more, expect something to come from left field and blow us away like they did with Heath.

Cue TDK pop culture backlash in 3.......2.....
