Heavy Metal publisher Kevin Eastman says that Zack Snyder, Guillermo del Toro and Gore Verbinski have expressed interest in joining executive producer David Fincher to direct segments of the upcoming Heavy Metal animated film. The feature is scheduled to include eight or nine segments, and is being envisioned as an adult-themed R-rated film. Animator Tim Miller and Eastman himself are also expected to direct segments. The original 1981 film was also an anthology of sci-fi and fantasy stories adapted from the Heavy Metal magazine. The magazine and the film are known for their overuse of bloody violence, nudity and sexuality.

    Guillermo is probably the best choice on that list
  • Kir Kanos
    No offense, but the last Heavy Metal was terrible
  • Shaydon
    Del torro is overrated!
    Zack Snyder is probably the best to adapt such a film.
  • Yesssssssssssssssssssss.

    For what it was at the time, the original Heavy Metal film ruled. It was the first R rated animated movie I had seen as a kid. As a wide eyed kid, animated boobies rule.

    It'll be interesting to see a current take on these type of fantasy stories. And, yes, animated boobies still rule.

    Bloody nudity.... Now that sounds like a party.
  • Captain Awesome
    That's one of the most visceral and visual teams in one group. Good lord, I'm now excited to see what all of these guys bring to the project. All of those guys compliment each other in some form or another. I just hope that the animation is up to snuff and doesn't hold back what they have planned.

    Look how great Gotham Knight turned out. Surely we can revive animation like that here?

    @Kir Kanos

    I agree because they stuck with one artist and one horrible storyline...this won't be anything like that, it will be as good if not better than the original...hopefully they get some of the original voice acting minus John Candy...

    @Shaydon

    Del Toro just happens to be the most overrated genre director because he's covered so often...but the man has a lot of talent and his love for makeup special effects gets my respect...even if I thought "Pan's L." was a big snooze fest...so much quality and effort are putt into his bigger movies like Blade2, and the Hellboy series...Oh and Snyder would be great for a live action adaption...directing an original story that hasn't already been done is another thing...I'd like to see him take the time to movie a film that isn't a remake or from comic sources...
  • Superman
    Fuck yeah I'm down for this movie.
  • Steelo
    @Shaydon

    Well if you think about it in the aesthetic context of comic to film everyone on that list works. However, like Christopher is saying, aesthetically Guillermo is probably the best choice for the genre.

    But like all things we'll see.
  • Christopher Marc
    I just watched that interview...that's awesome how Fincher had the balls to tell Paramount to go screw themselves and took the project to Sony...I wish more directors/producers were like that, having faith in the project more than the studio..lol

    Funny story... my parents (both 60+ at the time, and my dad a pastor of a church) went to Blockbuster to rent Dr. Dolittle, for some reason, and they accidentally got Heavy Metal. Needless to say, it was an interesting experience.
    When they told me I almost busted a gut laughing.

    "...and is being envisioned as an adult-themed R-rated film."

    As opposed to the child-themed R-rated film.
  • Christopher Marc
    @Quan

    well adult-themes would mean brutal violence and extensive sexuality....most R rated movies are given that just on language alone..I think Peter was separating the two...A Harold and Kumar crap fest would also be R but I wouldn't say it's adult-themed...
  • @Quan

    LOL

    Letting these directors cut loose for ten minute segments sounds like a great idea. Whatever genre they choose, being constrained only by time and funds could be the release that refreshes their vision on any future projects. If it proves a success, it could turn mainstream audiences (and studios) on to films more daring in both concept and content.
  • briaimator
    I think it's all HOT AIR. Neither Verbinski nor Del Toro (especially) have the time in their schedules. I think they're trying to drum up publicity and a new producing partner.
  • jesse
    i think i just went in my pants
  • As the guy who conducted the interview, I can tell you 2 things:

    1) Yup, it's very exciting, BUT

    2) Mr. Sciretta might be a little more excited than the rest of us, because Eastman told me that those directors had only expressed interest :)

    So while I wouldn't bet the farm just yet, I'd definitely lay odds that this is the winning horse :)

    Eastman also talks about how HM2 "ended up sucking pretty badly" :) So he's got a good handle on what HM3 oughta be.

    BTW, we're giving away a signed copy of Body Count on our site. Details are in this week's podcast...shoudl be online by Friday, ideally, if not Monday.

    Cheerz guys!!

    Interesting.

    Considering everything del Toro touches turns to gold, and everything Fincher touches turns to shit, does this mean we'll end up with a ruby-studded turd?
  • Aesthetically Del Toro is stellar but when it comes to pace and keeping a decent story going he is not so good (juding from all his hollywood endeavors). Snyder is so so, and I think Gore Verbinski is EXTREMELY underrated
  • Sounds like fun.

    I really like Guillermo Del Toro, he really has this ability to bring imagination to life. When you read a book and imagine those creatures, I cant say that I have seen anyone ever do it better really. Hellboy 2 alone, I'll admit the pace of the movie was off a little bit but I was just mesmerized by the creature creations.

    I gotta give a thumbs up for this project.

    with all due respect and love for those directors, animation is only done well and done right when it is directed by people that know and work in animation. Get some of the best animation creatives out there and do it right. If Fincher does that, I'll talk about this project endlessly until it hits theaters. Otherwise, it's just some great names to put on a poster together.

    ...and if it does hit theaters, I'm definitely going to huff some cats before going in.
  • gocitizen
    BTW - there are plenty of brilliant, top-tier animators that have been out there twisting in the wind for the last decade
  • gocitizen
    oh...one more thing - TOOL.
  • Trebek
    The original was great, the second sucked balls, and I'm pretty sure this one will suck balls too. I guess we'll see. I'm sure that it will just be too polished looking - like the second film - for my tastes though. The fist film was gritty, and I loved that about it.
  • Dallas Man
    ive been waiting forever for them to make an updated heavy metal movie! finally and david fincher is on it? SOLD!

    i keep hearing everyone sayin del toro is the best part of the news and u could be right. personally i thought of guillermo as a more of a wizardy fairy kinda style and ijust always pictures heavy metal as a gritty, hard core, big tits, big hair medium but hey both elements are in the mag so i just cant wait to see what they do. especially with todays technology.

    im just wonderin what other directors they have in mind
  • ringodebts
    Neal Asher writing it. brutal fest ahoy!
  • brandon
    the first one was freakin awesome but the second one went down the drain. i think this one is gonna boot ya right in nuts.(figertivly speaking). i got high hope on this one
