VOTD: Oktapodi

Oktapodi

The Pitch: While the design might not be as fine tuned, this computer animated short film by Julien Bocabeille is certainly on level with the last few Pixar shorts. To escape the clutches of a skilled cook, two octopuses engage in a burlesque race. Yet despite they successfully escape their fatal destiny, their struggle to stay together does not seem to get to an end. Watch the short in higher resolution here. Julien Bocabeille now works at Dreamworks Animation. Thanks to /Film reader Daniel L for the tip.

As of now, I think this movie is gonna be on the short list for the short animation Oscar. I hope at lease it gets a nomination...

yeah nice to see a non-pixar short that is (almost) on par with pixars. but it is no 'the birds'...
  • This is excellent. The octopi are animated very well, and the human actually has more a Blur Studio feel to him. The whole thing is rock solid.

I'd love to see more animations like this on /film. Thanks for posting it.

I loved the snappy animation. Everything except for the human character looked great. I hope Mr. Bocabeille gets utilized well at Dreamworks.

Also, Peter have you ever seen the Team Fortress 2 shorts Valve created for the classes found in the game? Amazing animation and character design. Especially coming from a videogame company. I would love to see a full length short showcasing all of those characters, and a toyline, and an artbook.

    :)

Wow, it has the feel and executing of a Pixar short, but it really needs an ending suitable for one.
  • PFG
Sorry, that was much better than a Pixar ending.

I saw this at the SIGGRAPH animation festival a few weeks back and bought all three DVDs. This one was by far my favorite.

Just a note---Julien Bocabeille is only one of the six guys who made the film together as a team at Gobelins. The others are: Francois-Xavier Chanioux, Olivier Delabare, Thierry Marchand, Quentin Marmier, and Emud Mokhberi (No, I'm not one of them--just a friend of one, and acquaintance of the others; I got their full names from their official website). Just trying to make sure they all get credit.
  • there are some really visually stunning moments. great short.
