Max Payne Trailer #2

Even Bruce Wayne is beginning to think Max Payne will be a sizable hit and worth seeing. A new theatrical trailer for Fox’s video game adaptation contains even more shots of the hypnotic angels-of-death that continue to puzzle the games’ followers. We learn herein that the winged beings are referred to as “valkyries,” and reward people who “die in violence.” Clarification, meh. Backed by the vocals of Marilyn Manson (our second reference today, k), the new trailer better emphasizes a brooding, escalatory tone that plays the right notes of fanboy nihilism. Also present are the high-charged visuals that wowed our staff at Comic Con. For a PG-13 video game gun-porn flick with many doubters, my latest impression? For what it is, Max Payne clicked.

Current comparisons online to the R-rated, totally cheeseball Hitman are predictable and warranted, but the confidence expressed in the press by Mark Wahlberg and John Moore—once attached to X3—doesn’t seem like a contractual shill-routine to me. This trailer’s vague mix of occult imagery and organized crime recalls past genre fare like The Crow and middling efforts like End of Days, and Constantine, but there’s also the sense that TDK’s rating boundary-pushing was a real inspiration. And, c’mon, Mila Kunis firing a machine gun is equal doses ridiculous and hormone-tickling. I hereby move my chips over from Punisher: War Zone to Max Payne; admittedly, this is not a major gamble, but Payne does feature Ludacris in a fedora. Hope I’m right.

Max Payne opens on October 17th.

Discuss: Will Max Payne be a hit? What’s your impression of the final theatrical trailer? Is it cool or stupid or both? Are the valkyries symbolic or real?

  • kingdarius
It is automatically gonna make 20 mil or more the first week but is it gonna be good i have no idea but im damn sure gonna be in the theatre finding out
  • Arch Stanton
Worst song of the year. That's worth not seeing the movie for.

Mila Kunis? Hot, but terribly miscast. Then again, Ludacris is in the movie, so casting's not their strong suit.
  • bp
it looks entertaining but not necessarily good
  • th1nk
Wow. That was light years better than what I thought it was going to be.
  • Olive hill
The watchmen phoned they want their trailer back! They could have cast this thing with a bit more talent.
  • Domino
Not really impressed yet, but looking forward too it. Didn't know Jamie Hector (Marlo from The Wire) was in there, always glad to see talent from that cast get work.
  • Nelace
    @ Olive Hill,

Hahaha, I agree, it had a very "Watchmen"-esque vibe to it, trailer-wise. It's seems to also have that "Constantine" tone. Not too keen on movies based on video-games, but I liked "Constantine", so I SHOULD like this......
  • Christopher Marc
    @Arch

Its a new Marilyn Manson song of his recent album which didn't do well so they must have got it on the cheap..

From what I'm hearing the winged creatures appear when Max is using a drug and is tripping....
  • Jappo
Arch, what's wrong with this song exactly? It fits Max Payne pretty well.

And for the record it was made in 2007, so no it isn't the worst song of the year. Maybe you haven't heard of the Jonas Brothers.
  • Christopher Marc
    @Arch

Ludacris isn't the worst rapper turned actor...see Crash there was somewhat talent involved in his delivery...also Guy Ritchie is using him..could have been a lot worse...
  • Adam B.
Some the scenes look like they're shot really well. So it'll be at least entertaining to see the action sequences. I just hope they don't include a Ludacris song in the background since he's playing a role in it.
  • Robert Gills
As a real detective Nero Wolfe would say. Pfui.
  • I loved this game. Which hurts me to say...

Worst. Cast. Ever. What is Mila Kunis doing in this movie? She's cute and talented, but doesn't have the edge to be Payne's sidekick/love interest. Ludacris is talented, but that shot in the trailer where I suppose he's supposed to look intense and badass comes off comical. And I think Mark Wahlberg should be restricted to supporting roles, like his part in The Departed. He's really not a good enough actor to be the lead.

Plus he looks like John McCain in some of those bullet time sequences.
  • Arch Stanton
    @ Jappo,

No, I haven't heard of the Jonas brothers. Who are they?

    @ Christopher Marc,

Did you really just use Crash and Guy Ritchie as positive examples? Really? I guess you're heading out to see Disaster Movie tonite. :) I don't know where to begin with you...
  • Matt
I'm pretty much in line with what's been said. Looks entertaining but nothing special. And Kunis, really?!
  • Jay Ru
ludacris is one of the better rapper turned actors out there. personally i feel that every part he's gotten he fully deserved and did a pretty good job all the time.
  • why, why, why on EARTH do they use the same stock "noOOOOO!" screeching sound effect FOUR different times.

    otherwise, an impressive trailer.
  • september11th
Looks terrible, every shot jam packed with poor cgi or slow motion. Looks like blade. I dont remember the game ever being that over the top, especially with the bizarre supernatural creatures.. The trailer is all over the place, makes no sense, its just a montage of random shit blowing up with Marilyn Manson. The script will obviously be bogus, its not at all true to the game, the acting will be piss poor, and i personally cannot even begin to take a movie seriously when so much of it is clearly done on a greenscreen. what a piece of garbage this will be.

i dont understand why people say 'at least it will be entertaining'. how are you still entertained by the same bullshit hollywood 'action' films youve seen over 9000 times already?
  • James C.
Matrix + Constantine x Sin City = Max Payne
  • This looks like an even worse version of Constantine.
  • Christopher Marc
    @Arch

Ummm.. Crash won an Oscar and Guy Ritchie besides "Swept Away" and "Revolver"...pretty much resurrected non-drama British film making...It was cool to be making films in the UK again..you're ignorance speaks for itself

I take serious offense that you would assume I would go see an awful film like "Disaster Movie"...although all the movies opening this weekend look horrible...I have yet to see any of these films since the original "Scary Movie"....I also find it odd that you would take my personal opinion as an attack on you..I'd love to hear what you believe you need to begin with...

I'm not saying this movie is going to be winning any awards or hitting it big in the box office...It looks a lot more interesting than the last dozen of cookie-cutter action flicks...more recently "Traitor" which was a speedy Bourne-Body of Lies rip-off...
  • JB
Looks like a PG-13 version of what I'd hoped Constantine was gonna be.
  • Reminds me of Constantine for some reason. Like, if they had cast John Cena as the lead instead of Keanu.

I don't know... this looks about as interesting to me as The Watchmen. I may see it, but I won't die if I forget that it's out.
  • Hunter Stephenson
    @ JB

    You nailed it.
  • Hunter Stephenson
    @ JB

Disclosure: I knew Constantine wouldn't be a spot-on Hellblazer adaptation.
  • GregoryV
John Woo + Constantine = Max Payne ...I get it now.

Anyways, I'm not hating. Two Ukranian girls taughting guns does it for me!
  • John Henderson
Oh, i don't think it looks too bad. I gonna see it, only because i loved the games when i was a kid must of finished 1 and 2 atleast a dozen times lol.
has anyone heard if their gonna make thsis into a trilogy wait what am i say its fox they probably will anyway to milk the franchise.

    *SPOILER ALERT*

I loved this game. Which hurts me to say…

Worst. Cast. Ever. What is Mila Kunis doing in this movie? She’s cute and talented, but doesn’t have the edge to be Payne’s sidekick/love interest.

Actuallly if you read the script it sucked hardcore btw, mila kunis dies near the end. And the games storyline was 100x better then this
  • Joe
Depends on which Marky Mark shows up.

If it's Departed Marky, expect good things.

    If it's Happening Marky...

    (After trailer)
Looks like it'll be decent at least. The Valkyrie idea could be cool, but if it turns into a monster hunt...
  • Baron Von Cheddar
Question to the gamers? Did the Max Payne VG series have any supernatural tone to it at all? I thought it was more of a Cop on Vendetta actioner.

Between the Valkyries and the words "Aesir" on the wall in the trailer during that office shootout it looks like there's a lot of Norse mythology getting spilled around.

On a side note, is anyone else a little bit frustrated that the Valkyries are depicted as burnt-black angels snatching the fallen from windows. They missed the golden opportunity of having the Swedish Bikini team bopping around in metal bikinis while swinging battleswords and riding winged horses. Where is that sexist and objectifying Hollywood that raised me through the '80s?
  • J.Kerr
    @ Phillip

Yeah, same here. Looks about as interesting to me as Watchmen. Ill probably go see it, but i wont die if i dont.
  • 790
Literally, looks like another stupid action movie.

Just like Wanted, I have a "give-a-shit factor" of.0 for everyone in this movie.
  • Presto117
    @ phillip

it's not "the watchmen" it's just "Watchmen".

i don't get why people need to add "the" in front of it when it just says "watchmen".
  • Captain Awesome
    hahahahahahahaha
  • Bob
this looks pretty cool but i'll wait for the dvd. still i think this will make 50 million with an outside chance at 60
  • sari
"This trailer’s vague mix of occult imagery and organized crime recalls past genre fare like...Constantine"

    yup
  • Aaron
Okay. This Is the first time, for me, hearing that this is going to be PG-13. Why? When the franchise is clearly rated R? And for those "valkyries”, why are they even in this film? I don't remember them in the first game(be a while since I have played the first one) and I know for a fact that they aren't in the second one. So, wtf? Oh, and as for Ludacris, go back to rapping. You are a mediocre actor, at best.
  • tobor68
despite the constantine compares, and the marilyn manson i definitely get crow vibes from this.

my guess is the valkyries are symbolic. i think this movie will be good and i'm not really into gun pron.

like speed racer, it'll get a lot of hate on-line but will be better than anyone thinks.
  • Anonymous
There were NO valkyries in the game and no supernatural element in the video game.

That said, there were disturbing and hallucinatory nightmares and messy drug trips that definitely bended reality. But they were clearly nightmares and drug trips.
  • fraiser
this trailer is like a crappy version of the watchmen trailer.
they totally tried copying the song and everything..&&&
the VALKYRIES are going to be as ridonkey-less as the aliens in indiana jones... we Max payne fans totally got boned over..
    boned dirty
    : (
  • Still looks like a load of crock to me. Not excited for this one. Why not the huge noir influenced track over a ridiculous Marylin Manson song? The mood is all wrong.
  • byron
Uhm... ok. There were no "supernatural" elements to the game, but there were graphic novel (read: cutscenes) sections which described the city with supernatural and highly descirptive "the veins of new york pumped fire through the city" language. In the graphic novel sections sometimes there was surreal imagery but it was just that, imagery. also again with the valkyries, there WERE walkyres in one of the later hallucination sections of the game. also, it looks like they are bringing together some plot elements of the second game (which was goddamned amazing as far as I'm concerned.) both games are very good and stood up well over the course of time, as I'm replaying the first one as we speak, if you have an xbox 360 or pc made in the last 10 years you should really track them down for cheap and play them, i'm sure you'll be impressed.
  • Callum
    Crash Sucks
  • Frank
If I remember correctly, Valkyrie was the name of the drug which played an important role in the first game. I'm pretty sure they're just symbolic. At one time in the game Max Payne is induced with the drug, and this would match the scene where he's surrounded by the creatures in the trailer.
  • Rob
@ Baron, I share your concern. Reshoot with Swedish bikini models please.
@ Jimmy, yeah I agree Mila Kunis doesn't play much except cute love interest eye candy. But you got to give them a chance to expand man.

I actually enjoyed the trailers. The gun fights seem promising but I won't be satisfied until they allow marky mark to pop painkillers as he's shooting bad guys. Looks like a nice fun movie, with perhaps pretense to be something more meaningful/dark.

The parallels to Constantine are amazing though.

    Looking forward to it!
  • Donivan
    Answering the questions as follows:
Will turn a profit(production+advertising/marketing+ a little extra) meaning not a hit but not a flop.
Final trailer was cool.It summarized what the movie will be and the flow.
The valkyries are symbolic. It is all in his head.
  • Steelo
I would have to agree with "JB" as well.

It has a good visual style, we'll see how the story holds up.
  • XdarXideX
Just watch the movie guys... then make a judgement. Stop being all negative and get off your high horses.
  • Sam R.
I'll put myself in the minority and say that this might be decent, compared to the list of other videogame-to-movie adaptations.

And having liberties with the story (without knowing how, exactly, the "valkyries" will be prominent in the plot) can make or break this movie. Consider TDK's choices for character changes for the sake of style choice, and it worked. On the other hand, look at Spiderman 3 and the plot and character choices that were made there, and how it's considered the worst of the three (even by me).

I do agree, however, that there are some miscasts in the movie. Mark Wahlberg, I don't mind so much. But Mila Kunis needs to stick to roles that show off her more energetic side. Her delivery looks so dry in the one scene of dialogue within the trailer. Ludacris is a mixed-bag sort of actor at this point, so I can't really say if it's a good or bad choice. It's early in his acting career, so we'll see if he thrives or dies in Hollywood.

Not saying this movie will be TDK-sized magnificence, but considering that the industry just hasn't really churned out more than a decent videogame adaptation, this might at least top THAT list.

Let me close by putting it another way: At least it's not "Alone in the Dark". ;)
  • N9NE.teen.AD4
This movie doesn't look half bad, suprised to see Mila Kunis, not necessarily bad casting, taking a chance, perhaps? Luda, that's another story...
  • N9NE.teen.AD4
    Constantine 2?
