First Look: Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire

Fox Searchlight has sent us three new photos from Danny Boyle’s (28 Days Later, Trainspotting) latest film - Slumdog Millionaire. The film tells the story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show’s questions.

Intrigued by Jamal’s story, the jaded Police Inspector begins to wonder what a young man with no apparent desire for riches is really doing on this game show? When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector and sixty million viewers are about to find out…

Slumdog Millionaire will hit theaters on November 28th 2008.

Hey whatever happened to Boyle's Alien Love Triangle?
That film was made back in 2002 and still hasn't seen the light of day...or at least not to my knowledge.

This is an adaptation of the book 'Q & A' by Vikas Swarup, if anyone's interested. It's a good book too.
  • Ryan
    Sorry, that sounds so lame.
"Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show’s questions."
    Really?
    Count me out.
  • Its Anwar from Skins!
  • so glad Anwar is working. as much they kind of threw him away on Skins, he and the guy who played Chris were some of the most talented actors on that show.

    Something original! I can't wait.
  • This sounds fantastic. It is really refreshing to hear about a movie like this with all the crap that makes it to the big screen.

I've never read a description of a movie that made me actually believe its gonna be good but this one makes me very intrigued
  • hell yeah! I'm Indian and I am happy to see that Hollywood is finally making stories about Indians that has nothing to do with Bollywood crap.
  • Steelo
I dig that, that's pretty tight.
  • Jon
Why wouldn't someone want money? Count me out for this film! Quiz Show was better!
  • Webb
Boyle is the man. Never afraid to take on a story that in the hands of the wrong director could come out as complete shit.

    I'm excited for this one.

    Trailer?

a movie about Who wants to be a millionaire sounds original? How bout derivative and ridiculous. He's accused of cheating on a game show so he gets arrested, by the police? Uh, what? how exactly does that make any sense, unless the police in India are normally involved in game show contestant's validity.

And let me take a wild guess how this one ends; Main character gets caught up, tells his story, the audience goes on a life journey all the while experiencing the main characters trials and tribulations. His story rings true, cops release him, he goes back to the show and either wins the top prize or decides to take the cash and walk. And when you think its over his long lost girlfriend is in the crowd, or meets him backstage, or is his lifeline, something stupid like that.

    why does that sound exciting?

Sort of agree with Ryan. It seems way too fictional for what sounds like a deep drama. That being said, I still got interested while reading it so count me waiting for a trailer.
  • Dan
Danny Boyle hasn't made a bad movie yet. I don't expect this one to break that streak. Looking forward to it.
  • Shimmi
    Sounds original, indeed.

"Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show’s questions" is what got me interested.

And those who say that this is too fictional and all.. come on.. it's a freakin' movie.
  • Bull
Danny Boyle rocks. Why don't you wait until you see the movie before you judge it on a half-page synopsis of the story you fucking losers.
  • feed me a stray cat
Anybody who is doubting this film is obviously unfamiliar with danny boyle's work. he never ends it quite the way you would expect. to quote the man himeself, "with all the films that we've done, we try and take a genre and fuck with it a bit." don't expect a happy ending to this rags-to-ritches story.
  • Assuming India's version of World's Worst Game Show is as easy as America's version was, who would need to cheat?

    Ergo, this movie is stupid.
  • confused
After I read the movie plan bout guitar hero and then this news. I became confused, why does everyone seem to bash that GH movie plan while loving this movie? Not that I want to see that GH movie plan becomes a reality. Just a thought.
  • Yo
Anyone with an open mind will be really surprised! Saw it at TIFF, where it won the people's choice award. Amazing film.
  • Michelle
Saw his film at the Toronto Int'l Film Fest. It was awesome! My nerves are still shot from this film!
  • stupid movie. this movie absolutely sucks. make india look bad and take away all the awards. thats the way to go
  • jiji
it was a dumb movie. some idiot without any formal education ends up winning the "who wants to be a millionaire" contest... so stupid. and the actor who plays this looks like a electric pole... just a funny looking idiot. and then there is the chick who plays in this movie. she gets to act in a small role and that too a hooker, and now she is the highest paid actress in india. WOW .. what has our country come to?
