Guitar Hero: A Future Brett Ratner Film?

There are worse directors in the world than Brett Ratner. For example, despite trouncing the great character work found in the first two X-Men films and dishonoring their memory, X3 was at least competently directed with action scenes that made some sort of visual sense. But here at /Film, Ratner is someone that we love to hate, a hired-gun director who seems completely content to make films that can best be described as stunningly mediocre. It comes as no surprise, then, that Ratner recently expressed a desire to make a film version of Guitar Hero.

In a recent interview with MTV’s Jocelyn Vena, Ratner divulged his desire to make a film based on the monstrously popular game:

I love ‘Guitar Hero’ and I think it’s a part of pop culture. I would love to do a ‘Guitar Hero’ movie, if Activision would ever let me. I’m trying to convince them, but why would you have a movie screw up such a huge franchise? Not that I would make a bad movie. So that would be cool, to do a ‘Guitar Hero’ movie…It could be about a kid from a small town who dreams of being a rock star and he wins the ‘Guitar Hero’ competition. One of these dreams-[come-true] kind of concepts.

Over 21 million copies of Guitar Hero have been sold and that gravy train doesn’t look like it’s going to be derailed anytime soon. Still, it’s understandable that Activision would not want a crappy film tarnishing its precious franchise. My feeling is that in a nuclear situation where a Ratner film ends up being spectacularly bad, sales of the game units would be unaffected, although executives might look back at the film as a curious misstep in brand management.

One other thing to think about: In Ratner’s brief description of what the plot of the film might be, the “Guitar Hero” competition sounds like a real-life competition with actual guitars. This reduces the movie to a generic musical success story, only with some crass Guitar Hero branding. Why not go the South Park route and have the kid compete at a “Guitar Hero” competition, where they actually play the “Guitar Hero” videogame? (I’m kidding, I’m kidding…or am I?)

Discuss: Who thinks a Guitar Hero game is remotely close to a good idea? If so, should “Guitar Hero” the videogame play any part in “Guitar Hero” the movie?

That is just remarkably stupid. From the looks of that quote, even Ratner knows it a terrible idea. The best thing we can hope for is that Activision knows of Uwe Boll and sees the results of turning a video game into a film.

As for the story-line, it sounds more like something I would see on You-Tube spoofing "Behind the Music".

    Way to exploit pop-culture, Brett!

Brett Ratner wants to make everything into a movie. Is he screaming for a job?
  • I'm still waiting on Pong: the movie.
  • Kill all humans.

    (Except Fry)

Honestly when I read that quote I thought he was talking about the South Park route.

The kid-playing-Guitar-Hero plot? Sounds like The Wizard except...nope, just like The Wizard.
  • I see The Last Starfighter, with plastic guitars.

Timmy! Dragonforce are trying to take over the world! You're the only one who can stop them, they're on EXPERT LEVEL!

the most upsetting part about this, is that there are brilliant undiscovered directors who will never be able to get the kind of money ratner could get, who would actually contribute solid, quality films to the world.

Can someone punch this dick in the face already?

You know, at first i thought Guitar Hero is fun. But now? It's annoying.

There are better games that use the same skills in guitar hero that would make better movies. I keep thinking back to the first episode of the 1st season of Pure Pwnage (2nd season sucks) http://www.purepwnage.com and how they made you really believe in the life of a C&C player. Guitar hero doesn't invoke that emotion. It really is a game that feels a lot less frustrating than playing real guitar. People that play air guitar have more skill and more of a chance of being a rock star, tbh, for showmanship alone. Learning the guitar and getting good at it is a lot harder and very different from expert level on guitar hero. I'm sorry, but the only way this movie could be tolerable is if it is an absurd comedy starring Rainn Wilson...oh wait, nevermind: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/10009055-rocker/

Yeah, Ratner COULD make a Guitar Hero film, or someone could just take him out to a field somewhere and shoot him.

    Either way.

I"m Worried now. Isn't he also tied to God of War?
  • T-MACK
Wow, it's the EXACT same plot as South Park's 'Guitar Queer-O.' Click-click-click-click...
  • Brody
    whata fag.
  • Apex14
Can anyone say HELL no! It would completely ruin the GH name. If you're gonna make a crappy movie, at least make it for rock band lol
  • Captain Awesome
    Apex14,

or how about just not make a movie based on a game that pretends to be played by plastic instruments?
  • Quenfis
I'm going to hunt him down and smash a Les Paul GH Guitar across his face and shove the Rockband drum sticks up his pee hole!!!!
  • James C.
"Not that I would make a bad movie." Classic.
  • Matt
This could possibly be the worst movie to ever be made.
  • A Guitar Hero movie without the videogame is not a Guitar Hero movie. A Guitar Hero movie WITH the videogame is The Wizard. It's a lose-lose situation.

I'd like to see Brett Ratner make a movie called "EPIC FAIL"
  • I'd like for Christopher Nolan to make this into a gritty, headtrip, crime drama.

    Also, Donkey Konga: The Movie.
  • Enzote
    First... Facebook: The Movie
    Now... Guitar Hero: The Movie

Those ideas might suck... but at least, Uwe Boll is not involved...
  • 790
Enrique, he allready did that movie it was called X-Men 3.

Guitar Hero, (IMO) is the most popular retarded game I have ever seen.
    Upstaged only by Drum Hero.
(I find the ppl that are into these games are a little tarded)

Nothing cracks me up more when I go to Fry's and there's some guy that looks like Rainn Wilson playing "Slow Ride".
Dumbest game I ever,,,,,, and sign of the coming Apocalypes.
  • Goobity
Is it okay if I just act like I'm interested and pretend to buy a ticket?

Brett would be great for this role. It fits his plastic style form of movie telling. I'm figuring the budget will be $95,000,000 with a marketing budget of $35,000,000.

Jackie Chan plays the crazy father of a Chinese Guitar Hero master.

Chris Tucker is the crazy minority uncle with a fat, fast talking Guitar Hero wunderkind.

Somehow they each have a freaky friday moment playing guitar hero at a huge competition at the Eiffel Tower and now the dads, who are simultaneously being chased by a gang of Ancient Mongolian warlords, must find the magic guitar hero guitar in time to switch their sons back into their original bodies.

Yeah, that just about sums up a fantastically horrid Brett Ratner movie property.

our culture has now reached a new low point
  • Aindriú
Guitar hero Movie, seriously? That's almost the dumbest thing I've ever heard. What the hell if the steaming pile of a movie Rockstar had been released after Sing Star they could've just nemaned it, it even came complete with crappy music. Steel Dragon, almost as stupid as Dragonforce. He's desperate and so is anyone else who thinks this would actually work.
