The balloon of blind faith gifted the Coen Brothers after No Country For Old Men (and many other great films) by critics and bloggers is beginning to sputter across the Netz. The bros’ new CIA kneeslapper Burn After Reading starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt is receiving decidely mixed early word-of-mouth and reviews from the Venice Film Fest.

“Everything here, from the thesps’ heavy mugging to the uncustomarily overbearing score by Carter Burwell and the artificially augmented vulgarities in the dialogue, has been dialed up to an almost grotesquely exaggerated extent, making for a film that feels misjudged. …Nothing about the project’s execution inspires the feeling that this was ever intended as anything more than a lark, which would be fine if it were a good one. As it is, audience teeth-grinding sets in early and never lets up.” - Variety

“Joel and Ethan Coen clearly are in a prankish mood, knocking out a minor piece of silliness with all the trappings of an A-list studio movie. Those who relish this movie might treat it as the second coming of “The Big Lebowski”; those who don’t might wonder at a story in which no character has a level head.” - The Hollywood Reporter

Word of mouth…

“I’ve spoken to another critic who saw it and was asking himself as he watched the first two acts, ‘Why am I not laughing?’” - Jeff Wells jus’ sayin’

The Guardian was seemingly pleased with the film, but they also refer to it as an “afterthought”…

Burn After Reading may also go down as arguably the Coens’ happiest engagement with the demands of the Hollywood A-list - but this bit of career development may also be contributing to a diminishing of their particular film-making strengths. …in comparison [to NCFOM], [the film is a] bit of a bantamweight: fast moving, lots of attitude, and uncorking a killer punch when it can.”

Personally, I’ve seen Raising Arizona and The Big Lebowski countless times, but I casually walked out on both The Ladykillers and Intolerable Cruelty. When Clooney does cheeky comedy, it rarely gels—he often reminds me of a pillow trying to be funny, weird, right?—while the pics of Brad Pitt’s hair are too overly stylized Beavis for my liking. And yet the cast undeniably slays: Tilda Swinton, John Malkovich, JK Simmons, Richard Jenkins and Frances McDormand. We’ll be there, what about you?

Funny that, I love The Big Lebowski, Intolerable Cruelty and O Brother were Art Thou.

But dislike Raising Arizona, The Ladykillers and No Country for Old Men so it sounds like Burn After Reading is my kind of film.
  • nick
You seem to have good taste Rex, but wh-whaaat! You didn't like Raising Arizona?!

You know I could understand why some people don't care much for Ladykillers (i thought it was great), and No Country for Old Men (it was good, but definitely not my favorite Coen brothers film).

Well I'm looking forward to this next coen brothers film, doesn't look like one of the highlights of their career such as various films of theirs, but it will be damn good I assure you.

That rug really tied the room together.
  • Brad Pitt looks ANNOOOOOOOOOOOYING in this.
  • Captain Awesome
I've watched every Coen Brothers film on screen with the exception of Blood Simple and Raising Arizona.

And for the most part I have liked most of their films except for the two you mentioned. I didn't hate them. But they were just okay. I never listen to critics when it comes to their films. In short, I will be seeing this one too.
  • Ryan
    I hope it's good.
My hopes are kinda dashed at this point though...almost day ruining actually.
  • Well it seems most of the US press didnt care for it too much but the Brits loved it, everyone seems to like Brad's performance so that is cool with me.
  • kpong
Huh, ive never walked out on a movie, granted. I feel every movie deserves a sit through to the ending if i actually pay money to see it. People (hopefully) worked hard on it. I owe it that much. That being said, i can understand how Intolerable Cruelty wouldn't play to every market.

I actually enjoyed Intolerable Cruelty. Less so Ladykillers (which still means i liked it).

While the Coens have made a few questionable films, they remain way above average overall. Hell, even Hitchcock failed on occasion.
I'm sure I'll check this one out: the cast does pretty much rock, don't it?

As far a my personal favs: Its a tie between Fargo and Raising Arizona...
  • YoungZe
I don't like any of the Coen Brothers’ movies. No country for old men is such an overrated movie.
  • Anonymous
The criticisms sound remarkably like those that were initially slung at The Big Lebowski, following Fargo.

And look how people look back on Lebowski nowadays.

I'll be there. And so should all of you.
  • NIdWId6I8
this is going to be one of those movies that all the critics bad mouth in their reviews...then do a 180 when they realize they just didn't get it the first time.

    critics are funny like that.
  • Anything the Coen Brothers do is worth seeing. Period.
  • A Better Class of Criminal
The Coen's have yet to outdo Fargo IMO.
Raising Arizona, O Brother, No Country, and The Big Lebowski are my other favs.
However, The Ladykillers and Intollerable Cruelty really sucked. From what I've seen, I have a feeling Burn After Reading is going to fit in the later category unfortunately.

I went to IMDb to review everything the Coens have directed, and there's nothing there that isn't worth seeing, though some are infinitely more rewatchable than others.

Personally, Miller's Crossing is my favorite, though, as I was reminded this weekend, The Big Lebowski never fails to suck me in when I find it playing somewhere.

"Smokey, this is not 'Nam. This is bowling. There are rules."

I don't think anyone has ever given them blind faith. Not many liked Ladykillers, Intolerable Cruelty was praised a little more but thought of as fluff (which it was). But the fact is that the Coen's generally put out good movies (as in, better than most). But everyone's going to be gunning for it after NCFOM, of course. How obvious.
  • Bob
well if it is receiving mixed reviews, then i have this to say:

    a) I'll pass on Burn After Reading

    b) George Clooney is having a disappointing 2008

but i can't say choice b yet since i haven't heard anything about clooney's performance, but he needs to make up for leatherheads

No Country For Old Men was amazing. So was Fargo, The Big Lebowski, O Brother Where Art Thou, and Barton Fink.

Raising Arizona and The Hudsucker Proxy were O.K., as was Miller's Crossing, just because of a few good scenes. The rest was incredibly boring.

The Man Who Wasn't There, The Ladykillers, and Intolerable Cruelty were bad, as was Blood Simple, but it gets a free pass since it was only their first film. I suppose they were just experimenting new things.

All and all, it seems they climbed out of their bad spot with NCFOM, and even their little short in Paris, I Love You wasn't bad. I'll definitely check out Burn After Reading, even though it gave me a bit of the Raizing Arizona and Hudsucker Proxy vibe when I saw the trailer. And neither of those were their best films by a long shot, IMO.

George Clooney movies suck, he should of been shot for ruining the Batman franchise.
  • Gary
George Clooney movies suck, he is the most over rated actor in Hollywood.
  • PTD
The Big Lebowski is my favorite Coen brothers flick, and possibly my favorite movie of all time. I can watch that flick over and over and over again.

Sounds like this new flick may be right up my alley then, eh?

Oh, and here are the Coen brothers movies I have liked, in no particular order:

    The Big Lebowski
    The Hudsucker Proxy
    Intolerable Cruelty
    Fargo
    NCFOM
    Raising Arizona
    O Brother Where Art Thou
    Barton Fink

These are the ones that I only thought were "Ok" at best:

    The Man Who Wasn't There
    The Ladykillers
    Blood Simple

So I guess they have a good track record with me overall, eh?
  • Superman
I thought it looked like a bunch of aging actors pretending to be talented and relevant and I guess i was right. Fuck this shit.
  • Bob
gary i have to agree that George Clooney is pretty overrated! he has the talent but he gets way too much credit and i am sick of his politicing in hollywood
  • Abdallah
I love The Coens, both their comedies and serious films. I cant wait for this movie.
  • >80% on RottenTomatoes, and I'll be there opening weekend.
  • TJ
Count me in for opening night.
  • Matador
i think its going to be great but im a bit biased. i think the coens fart gold so on with the show!!
  • Captain Awesome
Clooney is awesome. What's the beef ladies?
  • James C.
Everyone should be allowed to fuck up every now and then. Especially these guys. Fargo is great. So is No Country. I just watch Hudsucker Proxy on Netflix a little while ago, surprised to see it was the Coen brother's once again. They've got staying power. So your criticism is no match for them. Muaahahahaha!
  • M&Co
I really don't care what they do, as long as the get around to making To The White Sea someday
  • It would take more than "mixed reviews" to stop me from seeing a Coen Bros movie the moment it's released. I'll be there.
  • Meli
I'm looking forward to this movie and mediocre reviews won't
    keep me away.
  • John Whitbread
This film fails to develop into anything interesting. It is summed up best by one good line in the movie: Report back to me when it makes sense.
  • Scott
I liked it, it's funny. I laughed. Just relax and enjoy a comedy for a change already, will ya.....
  • Tom
everything by the coen brothers has been quality. some obiviously better then others, but its subjective so everyone has different favs. To me, (unlike most here) one of my favorites is "the man who wasn't there". I also really enjoyed 'the lady killers' but i did not know it was them until afterwards, and i was surprised becuase it didn't seem up to par (even though i really enjoyed it).
burn after reading is now also one of my favs. I seem to be more drawn to their comedies. This one isn't as drawn out as the big lebowski which i really appreciated. don't listen to the critics on this one, its a wonderful movie, and you'll have a blast watching it.
  • Elmo
I like the Coen Bros "Oh Brother" and "No Country", but "Burn After Reading" only burned my wallet. It was not funny. The plot was there but obscured by excessive use of the "F" word. I mean seriously, Malkovich didn't have a single line in the movie that didn't use the "F" word as a verb, noun, adjective, or adverb. Pitt's juvenile dancing was used about four times too often and lost any novelty it imparted to the film early on. I pay my movie money to be entertained. this movie was not entertaining, it was a dredge, pure and simple.
  • Patrick
Brad Pitt can be so funny, as long as he's not taking himself too seriously... in any case, it's about time someone made good use of his habitually spastic arm movements
