Okay, let’s make this quick because I’m logging off, going outside and sitting quietly under a tree for the rest of eternity. Writer Aaron Sorkin (Charlie Wilson’s War, Studio 60) has joined Facebook. More importantly, he’s created a Facebook group where it’s announced he’s penning Facebook: The Movie (our title) for mega-producer Scott Rudin (NCFOM, TWBB)…

“I’ve just agreed to write a movie for Sony and producer Scott Rudin about how Facebook was invented. I figured a good first step in my preparation would be finding out what Facebook is, so I’ve started this page. (Actually it was started by my researcher, Ian Reichbach, because my grandmother has more Internet savvy than I do and she’s been dead for 33 years.)

I honestly don’t know how this works, which is why I’m here. If anyone has any questions I’d be happy to answer them as best I can. If anyone has any comments I’m glad to listen. And if anyone has any Facebook stories I think they might be helpful.”

This is not a joke (prank is probably a better word). Vulture confirmed the film via Rudin just seconds ago. Never thought I’d say this, but I’d rather see Emily Gould’s Talking Tattoo Biopic realized on the big screen. Okay, it’s Twittered and Tumblr’d, to the forest I go.

Per the “insider drama” and Rolling Stone piece warranting a film, we did fine without Netscape: The Movie. Hayden Christensen for Zuckerberg I say!

UPDATE: Of course Devin at CHUD is going to give the project a big sloppy kiss, comparing naysayers here to “bitching about email.” Devin seems to think this is a great idea, envisioning it like an adaptation of Douglas Coupland’s Microserfs with more cut-throat thrills for the youngs (our comparison). “What’s wrong with MySpace of Facebook?” he posits (while spinning around in a Lawnmower Man contraption, no doubt). I’m sort of envisioning a “hipper” The Wizard meets a new Reality Bites in the worst way possible. Also, Sorkin said “Facebook stories” and “helpful.”

Hunter, wrong link to his profile. Can you fix it please?

The story of Facebook is actually very interested, the creator is a total douche, who sold out his friends and early partners and I think stole the idea from people that hired him to create it... I think there was an article on Wired (or maybe NY Times) about it not too long ago. This would be better as a book at first and then a TV Movie, but low-budget. I don't think many people give a shit about the creator of that site, even if you love it and use it, why do you care. There is no movie about Sergey and Larry who made Google and their story is also interesting and I bet a lot more people care about that history.

    @ mike

    Fixed.
  • J.D.
Rumor has it that the movie is slated to go up against "Myspace of Solace" in early 2010.
  • REAL6
    THis is stupid!!!

But they did make Myspace: movie already a few years ago...

    Wow. This... is AWESOME!

    /extreme sarcasm
  • beakmans balls
Hollywood ran out of ideas years ago so I don't even know what to think about this. Just delete it from your brain and move on I guess.
  • Indiefilm
This is exactly what the general audience needs! A 90-minute advertisement that suddenly reminds them to check their facebook after the movie.
  • Oh, America, I want to love you, but you go and Distribute Movies like: Mean Girls 2: Even Meaner, Step up 3: More Stairs and Facebook: The Movie.
all of those titles are Shitty sucsess's. This movie will make money. And if it does make over 200 Million I will kill a Family member. So stop production.
  • Jamie
    I heard what Mike wrote.

This doesn't sound like a movie. Sounds better as a documentary a la The King of Kong. Let's meet all the characters and decide who is lying and who is telling the truth.
  • Agusto Paprika the 3rd
    I'd rather retake the SATs
  • Roberto
I believe "meh" is the term the kids are using today. meh.
  • somesister27
    @mike

the article was in rolling stone (at least the one I read)...and the story is actually really compelling. a group of kids had the idea for a social-networking site, and they hired the guy who would go on to create facebook as a programmer to simply make their site work. well he slowly stopped contact with them, and about two weeks or something after he finally told them he wasn't working with them anymore, he had the first version of facebook up and running i think. crazy stuff. and the story would probably make for a pretty interesting movie I think. (@Jamie, or documentary, actually. i agree)
  • I'm going to have to update my status in an ironic/sarcastic/seemingly shallow but deep way.
  • Ghost
    Let him ruin his career.
  • How about this for a movie pitch...Shit: The Movie!
  • Agent J
    Meh, I'll pass
  • what.
  • not sure how many walk and talks they can get in a college dorm room.

i'd much rather see sorkin take on another tv show.
  • 790
Lol. This sounds boring as hell.

I love how they pick a guy that knows nothing about it to write the script.

Typical hollywood suits. Motards all of um.
  • as Enid in Ghost World sarcastically said:

    bitchin'.
  • Christine
    There aren't even words.
  • Agent J
Meh, I came back and looked at this news after an hour...I'll still pass.
  • Meh: The Movie!
  • Meli
    LOL! oh man. -rolls eyes-
  • YoungZe
    What's Facebook?
  • Agent J
I can't believe YoungZe doesn't know what Facebook is...Meh, what is the world coming to
  • Matt
I can't wait to be bored.
  • Superman
Awesome let's make Google The movie. This Summer, Search for Adventure. Fuck this shit.
  • J Productions
I don't really get all the hate, from the sound of it its gonna be a documentary. Why they would bother, but still at least not its not gonna be a fictional Facebook story. Could be worse.
  • I propose slash film the movie. What say you? There's got to be an awesome story behind that.
  • 790
Good idea Ivan, they could use Comic Con as a background.

    Somebodys gonna write that script.
See; Comic Book the Movie for inspiration !!!!!!
  • YoungZe
    Seriously, what's Facebook? -.-
  • YoungZe
OMG, so it's something like myspace? God, i hate this shit.
  • If it's an exposé á la Shattered Glass, I'm there.
  • Captain Awesome
    .sean,

Tropic Thunder was already made, oohhhhhhhhh!
  • Agent J
Ohhhhhhhh I can't believe Captain Awesome went there....Meh
  • M&Co
So this is what happens when Hollywood answers our pleas for more original film making?

Please go back to sequels and remakes.
  • Jamie
    Craigslist: The Movie

    Who wants to write it?
  • @ jamie its already been done.

24 Hours on Craigslist is actually pretty great. They made the whole movie with just Craigslistings.
  • Agent J
    Meh, Craigslist is overrated.
  • co_birdfan
so why do you always have to reference devin at CHUD just to measure yourself against him?
  • Hunter Stephenson
    @ co_birdfan

    Always, eh?

Devin took a shot at our comments section---and he was referring to it, since no other site sans Vulture had posted at that point---so I added an update. Big whup.

Also, Devin emailed me a couple days ago accusing me of not giving him credit for The Line, a web series featuring our guest on the /Filmcast that I had planned on linking before the show.

Yeah, blogging politics, it's a block party like the DNC. Glad you're so invested.
  • Jon
Wait a gosh darn minute here! Aaron Sorkin is a damn good writer. I was a huge West Wing fan. SO WTF IS HE SMOKING NOW?!!!!
  • B e n - A
Sorkin is to my thinking, a genius. So I doubt he'd be doing this unless he's found something which is of interest. I'd sit back and see how this unfolds before anyone judges. Rudin has some huge films under his name as a producer and Sorkin has always produced writing of intelligence so prepared to be surprised if this will not work out.
  • Hunter, I didn't take a shot at your comments section, I took a shot at your article.

And you linked THE LINE, a web series that had been running since the beginning of July, hours after I did. The timing was weird. Of course I sent you an email about it instead of writing a story because I wanted to be friendly and not make it a 'thing,' but you didn't even bother replying.

I like you Hunter, but the problem with a story like this is that you're coming from an ignorant viewpoint and doing your readers a disservice. Unless you actually think Aaron Sorkin is going to write a movie filled with tweens doing status updates, that is.
  • Jappo
I hate Chud. I really, really do. What good has ever come from it asides from "controversial" articles. It's not controversial if your trying to be.
  • I would never have coupled Sorkin with such fad based subject matter. I mean, yeah facebook is great... but isnt the story of how it came about more of a documentary on the evolution of social interaction than the quick witted, fast paced political drama we're used to from Sorkin?

If he pulls it off, I will be impressed. I probably wont go to see it anyway though, purely on principle.
