Dark Knight Sequel Update: Waiting on Nolan

Buried at the end of The Hollywood Reporter’s article on the marketing of The Dark Knight is a small update on the status of a third Batman film: Both Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures want to greenlight a third film, but are waiting for Christopher Nolan to come to them with a “story and a plan.” Right now Nolan is taking a well deserved vacation, but producer Charles Rovan promises that “When he comes back, we will see how he feels.” Until Nolan returns, the rumor mill will run wild with speculation. I’m sure we haven’t seen an end of the casting rumors and fan made poster concepts.

I think it's funny that even when WB says stuff like this there's gonna be a rumor tommorow along the lines of "Christopher Nolan wants Michael Jackson to play Calendar Man in his sequel to the Dark Knight".
  • Christopher Edwards
Nolan said in a interview that he is having a 5 month vacation, but i dont think he will come back with an i dea for the third film, it will take him till proberly end of next year before anything solid comes out from it.

Will he do another one? There are going to be a lot of high expectations... maybe too high? I love it when someone goes out on top, however, I would love a sequel to The Dark Knight done by Nolan and the same cast - with new villains.
  • david
i hope he does something else in between like last time (ala the prestige) id rather wait 3-4 years for a great batman followup rather than a WB rush job.
  • Adam B.
I agree with david. There's still a lot of time for TDK to sink in. And good things come to those who wait. I bet Nolan is tired of TDK and Batman for the time being (though stoked by the reception it's getting).
  • >>> As we are speaking about updates -> I put on watch the artist Josh McMahon's page on DeviantArt. That's the guy with the three amazing posters of the Riddler, Catwoman and Harley Quinn. So it turns out that someone 'called' DA and claim those posters to be deleted because of a copyright.
A fen-art to be persecuted for copyrights ??? Doesn't it sounds a little bit strange to you to?

Actually I am surprised that /film didn't wrote about this already.

As for the news - Nolan deserves a vacation! And besides - good things, takes time.
  • Heftybag
He did do the Prestige after Batman Begins to get a break - I say let him do another film then he will be ready for batman once again!
  • Harrison and Steve
WB's next move should be putting out a new superman in 2 yrs, not batman 3.

WB is greedy. look how soon theyre putting TDK dvd out.
  • I think Nolan will start on a pet project in the spring of next year and then we'll have official details on a Dark Knight sequel around December of '09.
  • Captain Awesome
    Harrison and Steve,

That's not being greedy. That's being business smart. If you're film is about to hit the 500 million mark in theatres in the coming weeks. It would be amazingly stupid not to release it on DVD/BR by Christmas. No doubt this film will do very well on home media.

As for Nolan. WB and company need to leave him alone. Stop pressuring the guy and let him have his vacation. Let him maybe do a film other than a third batman movie right off the bat to decompress. Like he did with The Prestige. Then have him work on the next film.

I know they don't want to lose the insane train TDK is on. But you gotta let the dude feel 100 percent about being back on this project.
  • A Better Class of Criminal
I completely agree with Captian Awesome.

In order for the third film to be as good WB needs to give it some time.

    Nolan's will be done.

    @ david

i was gonna say the same thing: they need to wait at least 4 years, hell even 5 or more would be just fine. i'm not a fan of the 'now, now, now!' mentality - at all.
  • &E B.
Batman should die in the next one. That would top TDK.
  • Dude, I loved those pictures of Kristen Bell as Harley. I hope Nolan saw those and its gets some gears going.

    I'm glad those Cher/Catwoman rumors aren't true.
  • Baron Von Cheddar
I'm in complete agreement with the 3-5 year wait on a third Nolan Bat-film. Right now the TDK-rumor mill is in overdrive. There's no news to report, yet every movie, entertainment and gossip site out there is publishing rumors on casting and characters. Anyone who enjoyed BB or TDK will be back in 5, 10 or 20 years for the next part of the series. I'd rather it was done right than be subjected to a halfass cashgrab.
  • fanboy d
we should really stop calling them 'casting rumours' and call them fan-casting or publiscist propaganda
  • A Better Class of Criminal
    @ &E B.

I thought the exact same thing. He is afterall the villian now, he must die in order for Gotham live.
  • A Better Class of Criminal
Gotham TO live, Gotham TO live.

God I hate this freaking keyboard.
  • BATGIRL
nolan should just do something like the dark knight returns comic book. have it take place like ten years later after bruce stops being batman and then comes back again.
but obviously he would need to make a lot of changes to the story in order for it to work with the other movies, but i still think it's a good idea and possiblity.
  • BATGIRL
and i wouldn't mind waiting for the next movie like last time, as long as he makes a good movie in between because i absolutly love The Prestige. after Begins and TDK, it's my favorite movie.
  • /rumors
Well, we could see the end of the stupid, obviously fake rumors...IF YOU STOPPED PRINTING EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM!!! Pretty simple, huh?
  • I AM THE BATMAN
Until Nolan is done with his vacation and gets back to work... check out this link for some serious "Dark Knight" coolness:

If Nolan doesn't return, they should get these guys moving on it...
  • Batmanaholic
It comes down to the story, and money. If WB comes to Nolan with a good enough script with some actors like Johnny Depp (sp) and paid him enough money then another movie will be made sooner than later.
