HBO Kills Preacher Television Series

HBO has killed the planned television adaptation of Garth Ennis‘ popular Vertigo comic series Preacher. Mark Steven Johnson broke the news to ComicsContinuum, claiming that the project got to the budgeting stage before it was axed.

“The new head of HBO felt it was just too dark and too violent and too controversial. Which, of course, is kind of the point,” said Johnson. “It was a very faithful adaptation of the first few books, nearly word for word. They offered me the chance to redevelop it but I refused. I’ve learned my lesson on that front and I won’t do it again. So I’m afraid it’s dead at HBO.”

While this is sad news, I’m kind of glad that Johnson is off the project. After all, this is the same guy who made Ghost Rider and Daredeveil. I’m not sure I would like Johnson’s “faithful” adaptation. Johnson has heard that someone else “is in the process of getting the rights to turn it into a feature film.”

A film adaptation was once being developed at Kevin Smith’s production company - View Askew Productions, with James Marsden attached to play the lead. When the one-hour series was first announced in November 2006, Pretty in Pink director Howard Deutch named to helm the pilot episode. Robert Rodriguez was said to be one of the “many top-shelf directors interested in” helming an episode of the series. So I’m confident that the project will eventually get a green light somewhere.

But a television series seemed like such a great idea. My hope is that following the success of Dexter, that Showtime would make a play for a television adaptation. They certainly aren’t afraid of dark material. The only question is, do they have the budget.

The official plot synopsis from the graphic novel follows: “Here’s a book guaranteed to offend a bunch of people, not only because of its profuse profanity and graphic violence, but because it’s the epitome of iconoclasm. Like a brutal accident, you can’t watch but you can’t turn away. The story follows an ex-preacher man, Jesse, who has become disgusted with God’s abandoning of His responsibilities. So Jesse starts off into the wilds of Texas with his hitman girlfriend and new best friend (a vampire) to find God so that he can give Him a piece of his mind. Despite its superficial perversity, this book contains what may be the most moral character in mainstream comics. A cult hit in the making. Fans of Quentin Tarantino take note.”

The 75 issue comic book series was created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, and published between 1995 to 2000.

Just a small correction, but Preacher only ran 66 issues, not 75. It's good to know that Mark Steven Johnson decided not to rework the show and let it die instead.

I am glad also that Mark Steven Johnson is off the project becuase he hasn't done anything good for me.

But the story defenitpy sounds like a tv series more yhanan film, just hope that it gets a turn around

The world is saved from another Mark Steven Johnson comic book adaptation. Huzzah!
  • Gentlemen
yeah i really couldn't care less, good time they aren't wasting there time.
  • Greg: according to wikipedia, 66 monthly issues + 5 specials + a 4-issue miniseries = 75
  • Mark Steven Johnson is a hack. Thanks God he's off this.

What a bummer, I was looking forward to seeing this. "Preacher" is by far my most favorite work by Garth Ennis, what a shame. If they are going to adapt a movie, it has to be atleast 3 films to do the story justice.
  • urgh. i was so anxiously waiting for an annoucment and this is why i get :(. i really hope showtime picks it up.
  • Well, damn it.

    Mark Who?

I would love to see this on Showtime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Please !!!!!!!!!!!
  • I am glad this got rid of Mark Steven Jonhson and Jams Marsden. I would love to see a Preacher series but with some one like Kevin Smith or QT helming the project. I like James Marsden as an actor but he can't play Jesse Custer. Should be either Josh Brolin or Josh Lucas (with his hair dyed black).

And kurt russell for for saint of killers

I'd of course, love to see this as a HBO or Showtime series, but if it's not going to be done right and completely, then I don't want it at all. HBO has good shows, but they have a tendency to cancel promising shows (like Carnivale, for instance). Maybe Showtime (and a decent director) can give it a shot?

A movie version would be too bastardized and abbreviated.

I just don't understand why HBO would even allow for MSJ to be allowed to read the script let alone helm the series. It would have been an absolute trainwreck if they had progressed with filming and the such.

What really bother me thought is the lack of foresight that HBO has in terms of this IP. If someone could do a page for page translation of this series it would fucking epic on every scale. The storyboards have already been made, the words are there what the fuck is so hard about taking whats on the page and translating that to a 1 hour R rated HBO show? Its not like every episode would cost as much as Rome did and with the way special effects are utilized today it would be conceivable to keep this budget on a realistic scale.

When you have a retread hack like MSJ on point I can see why the suits at HBO avoided going through with a greenlight and I'm glad this property wasn't destroyed.

I want to direct this series. I would be fucking awesome if done right and it just amazes me that no one has been able to bring a logical argument to the suits for a greenlight

66 title issues would get you 5 seasons of 13 episodes each and if you added in an HBO films movie or two you could combine the rest of the specials and round out the entire run. All you'd have to do was cast well and follow the books. It really can't be that hard.
  • Haha funny how I suggested (somewhere else) that PREACHER should be a HBO series.....and then I read this article! Didn't know they were actually considering doin' it.. Anyway, after reading these names (Johnson, Rodriguez, thieves), good thing the project is off. These losers would've fucked up EVERYTHING
  • As much as I adore The Preacher series (it brought me back to comics when I "thought" I grew out of them.) I am relieved that Mark Steven Johnson is no longer in control. I also was nauseous thinking of James Marsden as the Preacher. Anyone else like the idea of someone like Ron Moore or Damon Lindelof (post Lost of course) showrunning Preacher instead?
  • gah
HBO is stupid because whatever the ratings were, this would have made a shitload on DVD. I had mixed feelings about this. Johnson as showrunner was obviously a bad choice. But the fact they were going to give Kevin Smith and RobRod some episodes to direct...that would have been awesome. As for turning it into a feature film? terrible terible idea. Either HBO or bust.

I'm so fucking glad Mark Steven Johnson is off of it. But this head guy at HBO should get together with Fox and they should both FO to the max.

    Word is bond.

Preacher is one of the few comics properties left that deserves a good turn. Hopefully a fuck up just got headed off at the pass.

@ Peter: Preacher was 66 issues. One shots, spin-offs and limited series don't count in a comic series 'run'. No matter what Wiki says. :)

I rank this series up there with The Watchmen in terms of a well-written series cutting through the bullshit. Very imaginative and stark.

I hope HBO rethinks their stupidity or Showtime picks it up. One of the reasons why I liked Carnivale so much, is thats how I pictured Preacher to look and feel.
  • I have a STRONG feeling the new HBO head was being extremely polite to MSJ...no way can the head of HBO make such obvious slams against the material knowing what works at HBO already.

Methinks HBO also knows what we all know - MSJ is a hack and this is a way to get him off the project. I still want this to be an HBO or Showtime series - forget the movie...I want a Jesse and Tulip fix everyweek and I want all unknowns for the roles with maybe a semi-famous Saint of Killers like a Robert Forrester.
  • Good point, Jetson.

Here's Jesse Custer's thoughts on the matter.

    Jetson,

I really hope you're right and if that's the case. Then HBO is still on my good side.

    @ bopsychics

hahahaha this article is fucking awesome. Thanks for the link!

Showtime better pick this up! Preacher needs to be adapted it's the most epic story ever!
as for jesse custer there is only one man I could see playing the role rufus sewell! looks just like jesse custer.
  • Great stuff bopsychics...but why does the voice in my head when reading that sound like Matthew McConoughy?
  • pat
i don't know about james marsden as jesse custer. i always kinda pictured rufus sewell (guy from dark city), but i guess he's a little too old to play him anyway.
  • Preacher was a great series. No arguing that. But, give me an HBO/Showtime series based on Brian Azzarello's "100 Bullets" or Willingham's "Fables" any day.
  • Jada
id love to see the show happen, but so glad that hack is off it. Was thinking thoug. one person ho could make a good cassidy would be billy idol:)
