Before he was the director of the second biggest film in box office history, and even before he garnered acclaim by telling a story of memory loss in reverse, Christopher Nolan broke onto the scene with Following. The multi-layered black and white crime noir thriller tells the story of Bill (Jeremy Theobald), an unemployed aspiring writer turned burglar, who becomes interested in one of the woman house owners he robs. He begins following her, and eventually begins seeing her. But things are not as they seem.

Nolan’s debut film, which screened at Slamdance in 1999, is being included as part of Slamdance’s 15 year anniversary celebration. A special screening will be held in Los Angeles at LACMA’s Bing Theater (5905 Wilshire) on Friday, September 5th at 8:00pm. The screening will include a question and answer session with Christopher Nolan, moderated by Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times, and hosted reception for ticket holders to follow screening. Tickets are available for $20 through slamdance.com. No tickets will be available at the door.

The dark knight didn't even make fucking sense, and not one person could even answer what the story was about...cause there was none.

What's sad is Chris Nolan is actually becoming more successful off a shitty hollywood film rather than a meaningful one. He may have a long career, but for fuck sake I hope it's not making sentimental hollywood trash.

I've been to a number of sit-ins like this. And most people there are respectful and smart enough not to ask the same stupid question over and over again. Especially with a person like Nolan.

People might ask a Batman question a couple of times. Maybe even three. But they will realize not to waste their time or anyone elses, when they can ask the guy just about anything else.

I would like to ask someone like Nolan what his favorite films are in various genres. And what he thinks about modern film-making with options like digital vs. ceeluloid. And why his brother is working on that shitty Terminator film ;)

Does it have impossible to see fights?

    @gah

Oh without a doubt Nolan is on the way to becoming one of the greatest film makers of all time.

The Dark Knight was not mentioned once in this article. But you sure said it a lot!

You can buy the movie for half that price on Amazon. Unfortunately, Christopher Nolan live and answering questions doesn't come in the box.

yeah, this film definately foreshadows his technique & style. got this film on dvd a while back and for some reason it reminded me of jarmusch's 'dead man'.
  • beng
i really liked the following, you can see him trying to develop his technique, which i think was accomplished in memento. ive seen all of his films and was a huge fan even before batman. cant wait to see what he does next.

  • Ditto about the Dark Knight questions, Goobity. And the thing is, probably most of those questions will be ones Nolan can't or won't answer ("Will Joker be recast?" "Who will be the villain(s) in the Dark Knight sequel?").
  • gah
This guy will be around for a long time. Trust me. The Batman series is only the beggining. He's gonna have quite a career.
  • Goobity
'Following' wasn't as good as I'd hoped, having seen it after Memento. Sadly, I'm sure the Q&A will be all Dark Knight questions. Poor guy.
  • I've seen following. I think the budget is a suprisingly low 7grand or something. It's good, definitely the precursor to memento.
