Legendary Japanese Anime director Hayao Miyazaki’s latest film is a huge box office success in Japan. Ponyo on the Cliff has surpassed 10 billion YEN (or about $93.2 million) in just 31 days of release. That means that over 8.43 million tickets have been purchased so far. The film which is tracking closely to Miyazaki’s 2001 hit Spirited Away, will likely sell around 25 million tickets by the end of it’s Japanese theatrical run. That’s almost the same amount of tickets as Pixar’s Ratatouille or WALL-E sold in America. And you have to remember that Japan has less than half the population of the United States (about 41%). It’s also worth noting that the film is only playing on 481 screens, about 10% the amount of theaters a Pixar film plays on opening weekend. The latest Pokemon movie was also released on the same weekend and may have attracted some viewers away from Ponyo. The film will play at the 65th Venice International Film Festival, and will probably get a U.S. release in 2009.

Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea tells the story of a goldfish named Ponyo that desperately wants to be a human. She runs away from her sea home and befriends a five-year-old human boy.

    What? Who said that?

This man is a master at his craft. His movies are truly something else. Although this looks a little more tailored to children, I'll probably love it - Still waiting for another Princess Mononoke from him.
  • Captain Awesome
I've been waiting for Ponyo forever. I can't wait! I'm glad to see it doing amazingly well there though.

    @ TheDaftPunk

Miyazaki said this inspired by his son. "The character of S?suke is based on Miyazaki's son Gor? Miyazaki when he was five."

So I can see where the art style doesn't have a darker tone to it like the other films he's done.
  • krackajap
    I lol'ed at the title.
  • moulie
    looks wack...
  • Steelo
    moulie: yo mama

  • Ghost
I loved this film! It is a much lighter toned film but just like many of his older works you still fall in love with his stories. I only wished that when I got back home it would come out soon but the fact that we have to wait till next year sucks!
  • Dangerous Dave
My heart seriously skipped a beat when I read the title.

    @ Captain Awesome

Oh yeah! I heard about how he was saying it was inspired by his son, I just completely forgot. That's along the lines of what I was getting at, although it's not like his other movies, I'm still going to love it - but would like to see another serious pg-13 Miyazaki movie.

So we should probably expect a dvd release, it's a shame anime movies don't make it to the theaters in America.
  • Goobity
Any Miyazaki film is a cause for celebration. I look forward to seeing this one.
  • Captain Awesome
    TheDaftPunk,

Hopefully Lasseter and Disney pick up on it and distribute it on screens here. Like they did his other films.
  • The Joka'
Miyazaki is the greatest single storyteller in films Period!!!!!!!! Even tho' that picture up top makes the movie seem weird and almost generic , i'm almost 100 % sure it will suck you in , in the first 5 minutes. The man can make a compelling story out of anything, he's my personal hero. Even PIXAR acknowledges him as the greatest...........can't wait 4 it!
  • Tony
the description of the movie sounds like The Little Mermaid. i'll be watching this movie. loved Spirited Away.
  • duca
OMG I can't wait for this! XD *does the Twilight fangirl squeel*

With the success of Wall E this year there has been a slew of articles claiming Pixar to be the best, most mature animation studio on the planet. Whenever I read this I just want to scream about my monitor "What about Studio Ghibli???!!" His films are master pieces, just pure genious. I'd take a Studio Ghibli over Pixar any day.
  • Bob
There's a record the Dark Knight will never break lol
  • emily
I can't wait to see this!!
