Kevin Smith Might’ve Reviewed Star Trek

Entertainment Weekly should probably hire Kevin Smith to write movie reviews. Heck, they’ve sent Diablo Cody to do set reports!? It seems like Smith is seeing all the films early now-a-days. First The Dark Knight, then Watchmen, and now… Star Trek? Maybe so. The Clerks director was a guest on KROQ’s Kevin and Bean show and eludes to having seen JJ Abrams’ Star Trek. Lets take a look at the transcript thanks to TrekMovie:

Smith: I saw a movie last night that I cannot talk about.

Host: Was it good?

Smith: It was phenomenal.

Host: Any stars, any break out stars, and do they trek?

Smith: The stars absolutely trek in this film. It is fantastic. Anybody who was worried doesn’t need to be worried–about this film I cannot talk about…It was in very capable hands. The director did a phenomenal job–the director and his crew. Top notch cast and the guy that plays the lead is an instant star. That dude is going to be so famous. He is so wonderful. He picked up a role that I would say is pretty challenging for someone to step into the shoes of, because it is a role that has been played before many times by the same guy.

Host: How do you out Shatner, Shatner?

Smith: I don’t what you are talking about.

Host: I was just saying that as an expression.

Smith: Yes, absolutely, in a world of expressions, I would agree with that…I am so not

Yes, how do you out Shat, Shatner? When Chris Pine was cast in the role of Captain James T Kirk, fans were not pleased. But now it looks like Pine’s turn as Kirk might be the unexpected highlight of the new film.

you should also probably just forward this URL to his blog.
  • I haven't been misled by Mr. Smith yet.

Reviewed Revenge of the Sith early, said it was good -- I loved it.

Reviewed The Dark Knight early, said it was good -- I loved it.

Hopefully Watchmen and Star Trek keep it going.
  • bryan
i think it's more likely that he alluded, rather than eluded, to having seen Star Trek.
  • bryan
Also, I wish I had Kevin Smith's job.
  • cronos
    SICK!!!!!!!! He knows movies.
  • Iron Matt
ugh, Diablo fucking Cody. You just had to bring her up.
  • Brian
Kevin gets to see all the best sh*t! Watchmen and now this! Damn you Kevin Smith!!! Now if he could only come out with a 3rd evening with Kevin Smith DVD, love those.
  • Ohiofile
Hey Kevin, can you go see something that you don't like. You know, just so we have a control subject like in a science experiment. For example: TDK = don't worry, Watchmen = don't worry, Star Trek = don't worry (if that is the film that you saw, of course), Punisher War Zone = freakin' worry

    Something like that.

Kevin Smith = the new Ebert FTW
  • nick
    VERY NICE!
  • Jamie
I dunno. This smacks of "let me let you know that I saw this movie."

We learn nothing about the movie except that Kevin Smith is cool - or Kevin Smith wants us to know he's cool. And that [big name director] that is popular likes the film of another [big name director] that's popular.

Do these guys ever see each other's films and say:

Smith: I saw a movie last night that I cannot talk about.

    Host: Was it good?

Smith: Holy shit, it fucking sucked.

    Host: Wha - really?

Smith: Yeah, I almost trekked my ass out of the room.

    Host: You mean -

Smith: I mean, like, beam me the fuck up - they put "creatures in our ears" bad.

    Host: Wow.

Smith: But I don't know what you're talking about.

    ---------

Seriously. Ever hear anything like that?

    Nope.
  • cucumber
    fuck star trek.
and kevin smith is a huge nerd with mediocre taste in films. not sure why his opinion is the word of god around these internets lately.
  • Bob
Kevin Smith care to review X-Men Origins: Wolverine while you're at it? How about The Spirit? Maybe Transformers 2? Screw him, everything is awesome in the eyes of Kevin Smith.
  • Not surprised. JJab is a friggin' genius.

I am absolutely not a Star Trek fan and I'm excited about this.

    However, Kevin Smith... meh.
  • Yeah, agree with some of the folks above... I'd like to see him make some not so positive comments about something as a comparison.

Having said that, I've been cautiousl optimistic about Abrams' Trek movie for quite a while.

  • Captain Awesome
Kevin Smith might have had a slice of chocolate cake tonight!
  • Chet Williams
He should have his own column in Entertainment Weekly: "Big Fat Blowhard Reviews Movies."
  • Christopher Marc
I agree with "Chet", seriously what's the point of these statements? He gives no insight to the film, no real reviews. It seems like Smith is just trying to get his name all over the blogosphere. I think he should quit this half-assed movie announcement stuff and get that full trailer on the internets now! Next he's going to be all cloak and dagger about a bowl of cereal he ate. Yes Smith you have some status in Hollywood and get to see screenings early quit announcing that fact, very tacky.
  • This Just in! Kevin Smith took a dump last night!!!
  • Joe Newman
Kevin Smith has talked bad about quite a few movies; for example: Magnolia (which I thought was awesome even though I am a Kevin Smith fan), Burton's Batman, etc. (im not your review looker-upper-thing)

Look shit up before you start commenting someone loves everything; guess what TDK was awesome, I already thought Watchmen and Star Trek looked awesome, being fans of both source materials.
  • Joe Newman
oh and Kevin Smith isn't the one putting them up, if he blogs it on his blog or something then.. uhh he can; its his fucking blog

  • jank
i was at the crazy4cult art show tonight (awesome btw) and i had a chance to talk to him. he's a cool dude...and yeah, a total fanboy. but that's one of the elements that's makes him cool and sets him apart from a lot of other ego driven directors and critics.
  • fex
Look at him strain! I know that look. This man has way to much cheese in his diet.
  • Kevin Smith: Shall I proceed with the hype machine, sir?
    Captain: Make it so!
  • Superman
Bullshit. No one can replace shatner. Shatner is kirk. Kirk is shatner. Chris pine is Shatner's shoe shine boy. Fuck him. And I don't know what kevin smith is smoking but I want some.
  • FireFly's Enigma
Smith can not go into details about the film. Anyone who gets to view a "special" sceening of any movie can not mention anything. It's some contract thing.
  • 790
Hey Cap, that's a shit eating grin if I ever saw one. :o)
  • Can someone just get Kevin Smith, Joss Whedon and Seth Green to do a movie review show together?

They could be the new Ebert & Roeper. Only much cooler. And please, no frakking thumbs.
  • moulie
Kevin Smith isn't reviewing the movie objectively. He's more of a fan when he talks like this, so don't expect an unbiased viewpoint.
  • 790
Its interesting to see how Kevin makes the web work for him,,,

One thing to remember when you read a Kevin Smith Adavnce review or kinda one,,,
He's not gonna trash the film,,
He's not gonna burn that bridge.
Therefore he has no credibility and is clearly biased,,,,
Star Trek could be crap, and he would say its amazing.
  • Jeff
Why don't we all just wait untilt it comes out before we start to trash it. The funny thing is all you people that are trashing it are gonna be the ones we sane Star Trek fans see on the tv news camping out to buy tickets the week before the opening. One more thing don't forget your Klingon to English dictionary, oh wait, you're all fluent in Klingon, my bad.
  • 790
Jeff I only count 2 ppl that outright trash the Star Trek film.
Without trashing the film, I highly doubt anyone will be camping out to see this.
  • WHATS_THAT_SOUND
Anyone else think he could be referring to the guy who plays Spock and not the guy who plays Kirk? I ponder this because I thought the movie focuses more on Spock than Kirk.
  • Goobity
@ 790: "He’s not gonna trash the film,,
He’s not gonna burn that bridge."

Kevin has a pretty decent history of verbally destroying what he doesn't like. Check out his "An evening with..." DVD's for some fairly brutal honesty on a number of films / film-makers. I think if he felt it sucked, he'd be more likely to just not bring it up at all.

Then again, he promised Jersey Girl was great, too. :)
I'm a fan of his, so I kid...
I'm NOT a big Star Trek fan, so It don't matter!
  • 790
Well I meant the (Advanced Screening) bridge. He bashes dvds fine but its another thing all together to bash advanced screenings. He bashes one he might not get another,,,, see my pov.

I'm also a fan of his so ,,,,
And yeah he was good in DH4,,,
    Nice Fett joke.
  • Goobity
    @790:
Fett Joke?? I don't get it.

    @ Firefly: It's called a non-disclosure agreement. Nowadays, I'm sure there's a non-disclosure-unless-you-promise-to-make-positive-comments-clause. This is one of those, I'd guess. :)
  • 790
Oh ,,,there's a funny scene in Die Hard 4, where Kevin Smith plays a comic/web Master.
Bruce Willis sees his Boba Fett standee and says, "cool",,, Smith says "oh, your a Boba Fett fan?, " and Willis says, "I was more of a Star Wars fan". It was pretty funny.
  • FireFly's Enigma
    @ Goobity

I hear you. However the last person to see a movie, while still being made, were under contract not to give details. The pure reviews are set for the critics, actors and fans who are welcomed to the early premier, that's when they can give a full review of the movie.

I think Hunter, Peter or Steve (on this site) saw a movie and reacted the same as Smith.
  • FireFly's Enigma
    @ 790

That scene from Die Hard 4 was great! Fett vs. Star Wars. LOL!
  • Captain Awesome
    790,

The only funny thing about that Die Hard movie, is that it was a shitty movie trying to be a Die Hard movie.

    >:(
  • 790
Yeah lol Cap, I didn't like DH4 much at all.
  • james deegan
kevin smith could be one of the most annoying people on hollywood
