Warner Bros Still Unsure About Superman Sequel

Variety’s Anne Thompson posted another update on the status of the next Superman film. Basically, no one knows. Warner Bros wants to make another movie, but weren’t happy with the last film. Bryan Singer is still technically attached, and has promised to go “Wrath of Khan” with the sequel, but I don’t think Warner wants a sequel. And a unnamed executive admitted that “it might be better to start from scratch.” It seems to me that we’re looking at the equivalent of a game of chicken, with neither the studio or Singer willing to move out of the way. The interesting sentence in Thompson’s update is this one: “Today I was told that it is a priority at the studio to find the right direction and if Bryan Singer is willing to do that, fine, but if he gets in the way, he may not stay on the project.”

Some have told me that Singer’s deal is that if he wasn’t brought back for the sequel, he would be paid for the work he would have done. I’m not sure if that is the case or not, and even if so, I’m not sure why Warner Bros is hesitating. Comic Book movies are hot right now, and they need to strike before the inevitable downward turn hits. I was one of the few who liked Singer’s Superman Returns despite the flaws. However, It seems clear to me that people don’t want a sequel to Superman Returns, but they do want a Superman movie. It seems to me like the best thing to do is to hire a new director, and let Singer save face by bringing him on board as a producer. The new director can’t be George Miller, but someone young who will have a new take on the classic superhero. Hire Jonathan Nolan to write a script. Try to recapture the magic of The Dark Knight. After all, what would Superman look like in the Nolanverse?

I really hope WB doesn't go all Marvel and reboot after just one new film. They just need to make sure Singer goes from where he went from his first film and timr off the fat a bit. Get one talented studio to deliver on solid CG work and we could have a good Superman sequel. Studios need to stop being such pussies and swallow what they've allowed and try to just build off of that.

I can understand rebooting something like Batman after the Burton and Shumacher films. But after just one movie like this? That's stupid.
  • Captain Awesome
And by timr, I meant "trim".
  • Identitytheft
It should say "before the inevitable downward turn hits," not "enviable." Just saying.

Superman Returns was a weak, boring movie with a wimpy protagonist and half-baked evil scheme (making a continent? Really? You're gonna go with that WB?).

Nobody wants a sequel and not enough time has passed for a reboot so the picture will probably remain in limbo for some time.
  • Graham
might as well give it to mark millar
  • GregoryV
Nolan doing a Superman sequel is like winning an Olympic gold medal in all around female gymnastics. lol.
  • orange cinema
food for thought: if valkyrie does well, will singer regain some leverage in all this? i'd like to see singer & routh & co give us another one. the feel of their film was great, and they know what we want to see. superman's never been my # 1 favorite, but i can't deny that as a comic book hero he belongs at the top of the food chain.

it seems to be a very popular thing to say lets 'nolanverse' every comic book film. i don't that's the answer - let singer be singer and nolan be nolan.
  • david
WOW!!!!! Thats all I got to say. I think WB is more worried about making money than letting a great director give it a another go at it. I honestly feel that what Bryan Singer brings to the superman universe is something special. I know Superman Returns wasn't an amazing movie but neither was batman begins and look what Chris Nolan did wiith the second one. Everyone who loves superman feels that Bryan Singer should stay on board. Please WB...don't "F' it up ....I need to believe he can fly again
  • I thought there were 3 different teams pitching a new version - I read that Mark Millar is coming in as the writer that has been hooked with a director to pitch A version - and that other comic scribes Grant Morrisson and Goeff Johns also have A version:

    http://the-cinemaniac.blogspot.com/2008/07/mark...

This news is from July - and it came from him directly trying to capitalize on his name during the Wanted release (he is the king of that, gods bless him)

And my 2 cents - hated Singer's gay-themed Superman Returns, its like X-Men karma in what happened there behind the scenes...though I will admit I swelled up in the plane landing in the baseball field scene, but then watched in horror as it went down the toilet from there. I still cannot believe this is the same Bryan Singer that made X1, X2 and The Usual Suspects - but have a feeling his Valkyrie will make up for SR.
  • and when I say "in" I meant "during"
  • Enemene Muh
I can't believe you're advocating another sequel. The worst part of Hollywood is that it's all sequels. Sequels are "safe" for the execs, that's why there are so many of them. But sequels are also boring, because the original film is supposed to show the most important event in the main characters life - so what's there left to see?
  • david
Superman Returns was far from great, but I think Singer and Routh should stick around for the sequel. The problem was with the script and whoever approved that, not the director and star. A Reboot makes no sense, and both those guys deserve another shot to take Superman in a darker, harder direction with an actual proper super villain this time out. Maybe they should open the film with the death of Lois or the Kid (or both) at the hands of Braniac or another villain we have yet to see on screen, followed by Superman actually kicking some bad guy ass ( instead of just lifting shit like in the first one). Star Trek 1, Batman Begins, Hellboy etc all had average first films but fantastic sequels, Superman deserves the chance as well. The character has the potential to be one of the biggest money spinners WB has as long as they dont fuck it up second time around.
  • Captain Awesome
    david,

I agree with you about Routh and Singer. Bring them back to cement the idea they have planned. I will say that Batman Begins was way above average even compared to those other films. It also did much better in the BO domestically. But Singer and Routh were a great pair-up. I like Nolan, but I think he wouldn't be a fit for Supes. Not that he's not good enough, but Nolan is in a whole 'nother mindset when tackling a "comic hero". He's perfect for Batman. Singer shows that he loved and respects the Donner version immensely. And I have no problem with giving the guy another shot in bringing us an "asskicker" Superman. Which is what I want to see.

I was never a Superman fan. But I like his mythos and struggle with trying to live in a planet that's almost "beneath" him.
  • evergreen
Don't get me wrong: I didn't think Returns was that bad, but seriously?

The Nolans' magic works on anything.
  • david
SR and BB made pretty much the same domestically, worldwide SR actually made a tad more than BB. I guess the problem for Warner Bros is that SR had close on double the budget of BB, and it would be sorta hard to deliver an ass kicking sequel on less money than the first one. Any Superman film just screams crazy budget and special effects money where with Batman it is not as important.

That said, it wouldn't hurt Warner to siphon some of that Dark Knight money into a Supes sequel. They should take the gamble and try and get the damn rolling sooner rather than later.
  • 790
WB, just get off your collective ass and make the sequel !!!
This is DC's/WB's problem, they sit on thier ass, as Marvel shoots right past them,,,, (stupid)
Lets debate this for another year or two, hows that JLA film coming along ,,, as Iron Man 3 comes out.
What a bunch of hacks !!!!
  • Captain Awesome
    790,

I don't mind they take their time. I'd rather have them sit on an idea and be sure it will work and try to deliver the goods than rushing out things like "Ghost Rider" or "Punisher".

The problem with most comicbook franchises is they start to view it as a fucking race for some make believe marketing window. You don't see Nolan springing on a sequel right after he's finished a film.
  • Tobi
Nolan doing a Superman film may be pushing it..I think he should stick with Batman, for he writes fantastic stories for it, and he shouldn't risk screwing the respect people have for him as a writer by writing a Superman screenplay. My personal opinion is that Superman is now a doomed series. I think it will be impossible for a moder Superman to capture audiences like the original Christopher Reeve(sp?) film did back in its time. I think this because, honestly, the Superman costume can not be really taken seriously nowadays, and I can't really see how they could update it for a modern audience (Captain America is most likely doomed by the same fate). Secondly, the entire flying aspect of the character, no matter how it's done, almost always looks not all that great...but that's just my thoughts on the matter...
  • Mando
WB was unhappy with SR? psh, they were unhappy that it didnt make them more money, that's all. I'd love a sequel to Singer's SR and have been eagerly waiting for it. If they "reboot" the franchise I'll be very disappointed. And the whole Nolanverse thing...no. Chris Nolan's realistic take works for Batman, the guy doesn't have powers. With Superman, you have to suspend your belief a bit, and we need Singer to make this movie the way he said he wants to make it. If he makes it and no on likes then, THEN put it to an end. But there are a lot of people (like me) who liked Superman Returns and want to see another. Last time WB wern't happy with the direction of a comic book movie and wanted a new director, was when they asked Burton to step down adn hired Joel Shumacher. This tells me they don't know what makes a good Comic book movie.
  • Finz
I'm sorry but I agree with with the dump Singer, or make him a producer to save face.
And for the love of Jor-El can they find an actor who looks like a SUPER MAN?!?! I'm sick of "super heroes" that look like extras from The Hills!

Superman is an alien, so make him a little larger than life. Hell, I'd rather see The Rock put on the tights (again . . . remember that SNL skit?) then see Brandon Routh again. And that's nothing personal, he just isn't a good Superman. They only cast him because he looks a little like Christopher Reeve - and maybe because Singer wanted to shuck his corncob!

WB, if you want a Superman movie that plays in the same field as The Dark Knight, you need a massive overhaul. Nobody wants to see the "big blue schoolboy" any more. The 50's are gone. It's ok for Superman to be a little bit dangerous.

Oh, and finally . . . enough Lex Luthor. We get it! Time for a new villain. Hell, keep Singer, keep Routh, but give us Brainiac or Zod o r hell, even Mr. Mxyzptlk! Just no more Luthor! No on cares any more.

Ok, I was kidding about Mxyzptlk!
  • Harrison and Steve
    Singer=hell no.
    Nolan=no.

A bigtime sequel to SR could only be done by Michael Bay.

the only other option? a Kerry Conran retro trilogy.
  • beakmans balls
Superman needs a serious make-over. And stop putting the dark knight up on a pedestal. It has its own problems too. What superman needs to do is pay more attention to the comics than a 30 year old movie. That's the main thing. I know wb's scared of not living up to the classic original donner film, but too late now. What the hell, eh? And robert Zemeckis would be my choice for a superman movie. The man knows how to balance comic book humor, intense action, and good drama. That's my opinion, take it or leave it.
  • I think they should give Singer and Routh (who was a fantastic Superman) at least one more shot.
  • REAL6
But David, Bryan Singer is 'NOT' Christopher Nolan!!!
  • Albert Brodsky
I think we give Singer too much credit based on the fact he directed The Usual Suspects.

Xmen was decent, but there were many casting and character choices that I disliked. Xmen 2 was better, as we all assume Superman 2 would be, but many just like it for the Wolverine story (which I think has been butchered) and the girls like how dreamy he is (which he shouldn't be).

There were so many little things that I disliked about Superman, but the action was well done. Spacy was cool, but when you get one character so wrong, it's hard to get past (Lois).

Valkyrie looks like a strong story, I'm just confused at his choice to use American and British dialect in a story about Germany. He makes odd choices that I personally don't agree with, and I think that's what keeps him from being one of the great directors in my opinion.

So as far as Superman goes, I'd stomach another Singer sequel, and I'd stomach a reboot. I just want to see Superman on the big screen.
  • Albert Brodsky
I agree with the idea of a Kerry Conran "Superman of the past" type of story. I'd love to see the man of steel fighting big retro looking robots.
  • J'osh
Do Superman vs. Doomsday. That's right I said it. Just do a movie showing what a grade "A" asskicker he can be. Show building falling on him and survivng gas station explosions. I wanna see Superman punching Doomsday so hard it creates sonic booms that shatter glass. Show them bashing each other with tank turrents. I want one liners delivered with confidence. Throughout the movie seed Luthor being responsible for this monster. Maybe Lois investigating. Then finally as Supes is forced to put down Doomsday, Lois simultaneously is shown conducting a prison interview with Luthor. As Supes finishes Doomsday Luthor delivers something cryptic like "I didn't make him I just found him." Then have an exhausted Superman stand victorious only to have his attention drawn to a "BOOM" behind him. Then standing in a BOOM tube is Darkseid "Greetings Kryptonian." - END.

Simple straight forward action to dig into the audience. To shake the preconception of who Superman is. As for Superkid. Who says he needs to be focused on or dealt with. Sometimes Superman has an adventure with Jimmy and sometimes not at all. Apply the same to the kid, toss in a throw away line here and there.

Make Superman cool in the first movie then develop his character more in the next say two. But lets get away from poor angsty Superman. In the comics you almost have to go that route because of the fact that its hard to keep challlending him month after month. But movies don't have that problem, so don't saddle them with it.
  • The Superman/Doomsday story would be awesome.

I loved Singer's Superman Returns, though. I thought it was a great film (but flawed...I agree on the Lex Luthor story). But Routh was a great Superman and I think all that worked.

I think WB should let Singer complete his Superman story, I know Singer won't make the same mistakes he made and will give us a great Superman movie.

BTW...Superman Returns was waaaaaaaaaay better than III and IV...so WB should just be happy about that!
  • The Nolanverse should strictly be for Batman. No crossovers until at least after the third film.
  • That being said, I think Singer and co. could improve on Superman Returns with a sequel if they take their time.
  • gocitizen
Superman Returns was fine, but it really doesn't matter. In the end, Superman, as a character, just isn't very interesting.
  • SUERMAN RETURNS HAD ONE OF THE BIGGEST DISCONNECTS BETWEEN CRITICS AND FANS WHEN IT CAME OUT. CRITICS RAVED ABOUT IT ON ROTTENTOMATOES GIVING IT CLOSE TO 90% POSITIVE RATING. I TOO LIKED IT, DESPITE IT FLAWS, BUT FOR ANY FURTHER ENTRY TO BE SUCCESFUL THEY NEED TO GROUNED THE STORY IN REALITY. THAT WOULD BE TO INTRODUCE REAL TERRORISM INTO THINGS. IM NOT TALKING LEX LUTHOR WHO NEEDS TO BE PUT OUT TO PASTURE. IM TAKING ABOUT 9/11 TYPE TERRORISM THAT WOULD SHAKE UP TODAYS MOVIE GOERS AND GIVE THE MAN OF STEEL A REAL PURPOSE AGAIN!
  • A Better Class of Criminal
If we lived in a perfect world Christopher Nolan would do every superhero/comic-book movie.
But alas, it is not a perfect world. In all honesty I like Singer... and if he sais he's going to go "Wrath of Khan" on the sequel, by all means let him.
I personally sort-of-liked the first one, but it had major (really major) flaws I hope can be worked out in the second film.
TDK is to BB, as Superman 2 is to Superman Returns.

By the way... I'm gunning for the title "Man of Steel".
  • Mikey M
Do we really want to see yet another Origin story? I don't. We know Clark grew up in Smallville (see TV show) and we know he came from Krypton.
Cut to chase and action. Thats what we need. A good action story. And I mean story with action, not just action.
Brandon could be jetisoned and so could the rest of the cast.
    How about Tom Welling??
  • 790
I just cant believe their sitting on Superman,,,
the way there going Avengers is going to come out before the next Supes and thats BS.
And Synger's working on some Valkrye film.
    Thats BS. !!!
  • Rob
I didn't like Superman Returns nor Routh's performance of playing Christopher Reeves playing Superman. I am happy to see them both go, but I don't think this film needs a complete reboot. I definitely do not want to waste time rehashing Superman's origins again since it has been done a million times in film and TV.

I think that they can reintroduce the characters without rehashing everything. No one really blinked when Batman went from Michael Keaton to Val Kilmer (and I don't think they would have blinked about George Clooney either if the rest of Batman and Robin wasn't so god-awful) to Christian Bale.

I would love to see the Doomsday storyline, but there are some issues. I don't think they can do the whole storyline in one movie without seriously sacrificing the storyline. It would take 2-3 movies especially if you are going to follow the four Supermen storyline. I also don't know if the studio would commit to this unless they saw the reboot work in another movie.

I think what they should do is a film with Brainiac first and introduce the Death of Superman line in a second and third movie in the new direction. If they will commit to spreading out over multiple movies right off the bat, then great. But I don't want to see a movie version of the Superman:Doomsday cartoon which really altered the storyline so much that much of impact was lost.

" Hire Jonathan Nolan to write a script. Try to recapture the magic of The Dark Knight. After all, what would Superman look like in the Nolanverse?"

Oh brother! You sound like a love-struck teenage girl who's just seen Titanic for the 12th time.

Your obsession with Dark Knight is starting to worry me.
  • truespuerman
Jim Caviezel as superman, Chris & Jonathan Nolan as Writer/Director... The only superman worth following Christopher Reeves
  • Superman
    Hi everybody.
  • Butterfly
Hey Superman! glad to have you aboard.

I also really liked Superman Returns. Singer and Routh and all his actors pulled off the amazing feat of making me, who was always bored to tears by (and uninformed about) Superman somehow incredibly interested and invested in his story. I *felt* for Superman in that movie. I felt like he was a real character making real, painful choices - instead of a static philosophical archetype like Nolan's Batman feels to me. Superman would dry up and be a block of wood as a philosophical archetype - he's only interesting when we find ourselves, as mortals, relating to him and the complexities of his world. (That's why we love Christoper Reeve's Batman so much!!) And Nolan, god love him, doesn't really create characters. He creates philosophical universes where static individuals move around like gamepieces.

And say what you will about X-Men, every single one of those mutants was a full realized character! Let Singer make Superman II if he wants!! Free Singer and Routh!!!!
  • Retro
Rather have a reboot than a sequel. Superman Returns was horrible. And based on that I say, Jonathan Nolan should not only write but direct. I know he has no directing experience really, but there is always a first. And since he is a Nolan he can get help and advice from Chris even though he is busy.
  • 790
I swear if they reboot Superman AGAIN,,, im not gonna see it.

And if I ever see Lex Luthor in a supes film AGAIN I will boycott Superman forever !!!!!!
  • The Joka'
the problem with superman returns was that it was unoriginal, everything from the music score to the way superman looked was a rip off from the one 30 years ago!!!!!!!!! even MARLON BRANDO was in it and he had died in 2004.

Make a new movie, new metropolis, new tone, new superman, new louis lane, new origin story, new luthor . Superman is the grandaddy of all superheroes, so why is BATMAN doing better than superman???

Superman Returns SUCKED WEINERZ!! the superboy scene?........superboy??? the floating continent ?? Superman "struggling" to hold the plane when the plane was crashing? PLus the 70's tone doesn't compete with todays comic book movies. Metropolis city should look like Tokyo , new york and Las vegas@ night combined!! with tall skyscrapers full of life. Keep the the theme song but that's it.
Start over and make a new story cause Returns sucked !!!!!!!!
  • Wayne Enterprise
Yeah I agree with the joka' make a new superman story ( meaning don't make it a sequel to the richard donner 1977 movies like bryan singer did)
Start over from the death of planet kypton and go from there

People who think Nolan should do all the comic book adaptations are friggin' idiots. Not every superhero needs be conflicted/jaded and not every movie should take place almost entirely at night! If that's what you're looking for in a movie you can just wait for TDK to come out on DVD and then live in your gay little fanboy universe F-O-R-E-V-E-R!
  • Darrell
Superman Returns had an estimated budget of $270,000,000 (source imdb) and generated $200,069,408 in only the USA as of 29 October 2006... I'm sure it did okay and made some more $ on DVD.
As long as Warner Bros thinks it can make them profit I think they'll green light it.

Nothing would motivate this movies success more then a directer who is given the opportunity to fix his reputation. Keep it with Singer and it'll be great.
  • AHAHAHAHAHAH
It doesn't necessarily need to be set in the Nolan-verse and be dark. But it does need to be GOOD. It does need to be America-centric, and patriotic.

It doesn't need to have a stalker Superman.
  • 790
Theres no fracken way im sitting thru another Superman reboot.
    No way !!!!!
  • 790
Lets see how Nolan does with T4, before we hail him as the next great writer.

    I agree, Kip Mooney,,,
(Singer and co. could improve on Superman Returns with a sequel if they take their time) , shessh you would think Singer has a script ready by now.
He finished shooting Valkyre months ago. ??
