Summit Entertainment has announced that the anticipated big screen adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s teen vamp novel Twilight will be coming out a month earlier. The film has been moved from December 12th to November 21st, the now vacant release date for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. This is a huge score for Twilight, as the two films shared a similar demographic. In the media, Twilight has even been compared to the Potter series, ever since “Eclipse” knocked “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” off the best-seller list last year.

The Catherine Hardwicke film was originally scheduled to go head to head with The Day The Earth Stood Still, facing stronger competition in the weeks ahead from the Jim Carrey comedy Yes Man, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Tale of Despereaux, and Bedtime Stories. The new November 21st date leaves the film with weeks of breathing room. The only real competition to be had is from Disney’s computer animated film Bolt, which will open the same day.

IMAX has still not announced a replacement tol fill the spot that was originally occupied by the Half-Blood Prince. IMAX reps has said that they have already “initiated some conversations about a replacement film” and that they are “confident” they will will find a “good project.” Could Twilight be coming to IMAX? Probably not. I’m guessing that IMAX will either go with Disney’s Bolt or extend the two-week release of Madagascar 2 and instead find another film later in the holiday season. Possibly 20th Century Fox’s The Day The Earth Stood Still?

wow, this is great for Twilight.
everyone is benefiting from WB's failure of a move.
  • Eric
WB GOT OWNED!! LOL their mistake is everyone's happiness!
  • tasita
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WB IS GOING DOWN! I like Harry Potter more than Twilight but seriously, I'm so happy fro this announcement. Screw WB! Thumbs up Summit!
  • Bob
This is what you get WB you bunch of pricks
  • J- Airy _ ButL_Er
Seriously, does anyone over 15 care about this movie?
  • BATGIRL
    i hate twilight, HATE IT!
i hate the books, this movie looks horrible, and i hate even more that people think all young teenage girls like twilight because i am a teenage girl who (as i made clear before) HATES TWILIGHT!!!!

i'm boycotting this movie, because no way in hell will i support this crap.
  • Jef
If it does come to IMAX, I hope there are some IMAX scenes although it doesn't sound like it from the post. Getting "reel" tired of these IMAX movies that are not really IMAX movies.
  • Devin
Everyone talks about how it knocked HP out of the top best seller list, but I mean how many wks was it at the top before it fell to second.

I see this movie making an insane amount of money the first wk and then falling to second.

But idk, ever since /film was attacked by Twilight fans I have had a bitter taste in my mouth. I won't see this movie in the theater but I'll see it on bootleg.
  • Mr. B
The idea of it being on IMAX is hilariously illogical. Why on earth would people want to see this crap on a bigger screen? It shouldn't even be seen on a video ipod.
  • Twilight for President!!!

    [screams head off]
  • Presto117
    @ Mr. B

    I second that.
  • Andrew
A good move by Summit, and Bolt won't be a problem because it aims for a completely different audience.
Bolt is already being released in Disney Digital 3D, so it won't be the IMAX replacement. I think The Curious Case of Benjamin Button would be a great choice for IMAX, and it would further boost the profile of a sure to be great film (as if putting the trailer in front of Indiana Jones wasn't good enough). David Fincher's visuals would look even better in IMAX, and it would definitely provide an experience different from all of the action and animated movies IMAX usually gets.
  • duca
I really don't see the point of having movies not filmed specifically for IMAX on an IMAX screen. Everytime I've been to an IMAX I viewed IMAX shot specific documentaries which were pretty fing amazing, but BECAUSE they were shot for it. The who point of IMAX is to have a completely emersde experience and regularly shot films just don't work with that.

...plus the low quality special effects of Twilight would just look horrid on it. ;) Oh well, at least now we don't have to wait as long to see Twilight tank.
  • Kim
wait.... what kind of movies does IMAX show.....i didn't know they were different?
  • Andrew
    Yawn
  • Adam B.
I second GWS' nomination of Twilight for President.
    take that Obama and McCain!
  • ko
ouch, my girlfriend is going to drag me to see this and it just happens to be at the same time as my birthday now!
  • the_biomind
Is this movie a remake of the Buffy t.v. series?

Girls falls in love with a good looking vampire...?
  • yawhooooooooo
ok if you guys hate twilight or dont want to see it then dont...jeez i mean we get you are not one of the twilight fans...but what the hell is the point of saying IM BOYCOTTING seriously grow up it doesnt matter...its not going to hurt if you dont want to go...im sure people will be able to move on with their lives...and seriously i doubt its going to take over harry potters spot..but its not going to tank...and besides what do you honestly get from saying twilight sucks and yadda yadda yadda...besides wasting moments of your boring ass life
  • jen
Summit have been very sharp. Well donr to them. I cant wait to see Rob Pattinson in this. He looks awesome in the clips.
  • Jakeeeeeee
  • Tal
The new date will definitely pull in some extra Thanksgiving weekend cash... and no competition with Harry Potter is also a good thing.
  • Meli
Twilight will do well this weekend -- I know my daughter was super
duper excited when she read the news. Though it's a little conselation to the fact that Warners has pissed all the HP fans off.
  • Jeff W.
I must confess, I've never read one of the Twilight books. From what I can gather from the lame trailer, it has something to do with a gay vampire and shoddy special effects. I can't imagine this making Harry Potter money.
  • Sam
yawhooooooooo is right. If you don't like it, then DON'T COMMENT. You're just ruining it for us. Twilight happens to be a great story and I'm happy it moved up to November 21. Seriously. People who complain and yak about their boring, hateful lives are way too immature. BATGIRL. And Andrew and Mr. B. Boycotting the movie won't do any good, if you think about what you're saying. People are excited about this movie. Don't be killjoy. I like Harry Potter too and think that WB made a huge mistake. But we benefit right?
  • Andrew
    @ Sam

Kindly show me where I said I was boycotting the movie. That is a ridiculously strong word to use, let's not be asinine. Technically, I personally boycott every movie I don't see. It's an interesting story, and I've read some of the book, but I have little faith in the movie.

Freedom of speech goes both ways, dude. Show me where it says the comments sections are only for fans of particular directors/actors/stories/graphic novels. If people on a comments section of a blog are "ruining" a movie for you, then you seriously need to reassess your life.
  • duca
    @Andrew

    Well said.

    @Sam, yawhooooooooo, whoever

As I have stated before in other places on this website every movie faces this type of criticism, not just Twilight. However, it seems that everyone else can be mature enough to simply ignore the negative comments on the posts they enjoy. Hell, I've kept my mouth shut plenty of times when I've seen people bash the Watchmen trailer/movie. It's called being respectful of other peoples opinions and their right to express them.

If this were a Twilight fan site I could understand the anger, however, this is a movie blog and that means that you will find people with negative opinions of it due to the vastly different demographic being reached. Please be mature and simply ignore the negative, and post your comment. Debate is fine, however these personal attacks have got to end. It's really getting annoying and it contributes nothing to the actual discussion at hand, which is whether or not HP will be replaced in IMAX by a different movie.

im sorry usually i dont post on things lke this especaially since the posts are so ol, nbut i had to
i am 27 and all of my friends(same age, 25 -32) love all the books, and couldnt put it down, along with our husbands. So for those of you who say does anyone over 15 like these books, YES, and esgerly awaiting the movie release. The book release parties at borders were packed with our age group as well as the younger generation,. Which is good. All ages from young adult to 90 can ernjoy these books
im sorry, but some of us have open minds, and imaginations and like to open ourselves up for escape sometimes.
and thats to me what these books did, was allow me to escape reality and be intrigued. I love them!!!!!
    so back off you naysayers!!!!!
  • Kendra
Twilight is the best book on earth!
  • Caitlin
Mentioning that Eclipse "knocked Deathly Hallows off the bestseller list" is misleading, because Deathly Hallows sold more books in the first 24 hours of its release than Eclipse has in a year. Also, Deathly Hallows' total sales (40 million) dwarf the whole Twilight series' sales (15 million). The only reason Eclipse finally reached the top of the Time Magazine's bestseller list is because everyone who wants to read Deathly Hallows has read it already.

I hear some people mentioning this a lot: the demographic is clearly intended for tween readers, so why are people apparently "old enough to know better" still reading it? Answer: age doesn't keep you from having bad taste : )
  • adrii from mexico
    Gosh!!
    are you guys midgets?!
NOOO! then just get over it!!
some people actually like twilight so what?
they don't go around talking shit of you just 'cause you like harry potter or other movies!
we like different things so what? thank god we're all not the same!
so next time think twice before you write this crap!!
    peace out!
  • Beverly
    ummm....vampires dont have a reflection...
  • twilight it the best move i had seen.
