Lionsgate Gunning For a PG-13 Punisher: War Zone?

Slowly but surely, Punisher: War Zone is being lowered into a grave of WTF by Lionsgate. First, Lexi Alexander, director of the gorey Marvel actioner, was seemingly kicked off the project. We still don’t know what happened exactly. Her candid, rah-rah website was suddenly wiped clean of all prior updates on the film, save for a cryptic “see, hear, speak no evil” monkey post, which was later replaced by a detached entry about a friend’s Bugatti. Today, Latino Review hears that Lionsgate might edit the film for a PG-13 rating. The site speculates that The Dark Knight’s money volcano was an influence. Strange since Lionsgate is moving forward with an R-rated Conan reboot, also being compared (of course) to TDK. But if true, this is beyond absurd. We’re almost intrigued to see them brick, given that Alexander enticed fans with boasts of hardcore bloodshed and Castle-worthy violence for months—later confirmed by this entertaining, head smashing red band clip.

If Lionsgate is reading this, all it takes is a short statement to the fans clarifying your flick’s status. I was just interviewed by a mag about the detrimental impact a studio’s silence in 2008 can have on a movie generally perceived as troubled. War Zone is becoming a prototypical botched case. Current online perception is that there are two bad-buzz nails already in this film’s coffin, and buzz wasn’t too hot to start with. All it takes is one more, like star Ray Stevenson issuing a quiet diss, and this December outing will meet a worse fate than the prior Thomas Jane Punisher. That would make Frank Castle, a character that is, uhhh, not a “college educated Ferrari engine,” 3-for-3 for movie wipeouts.

  • total crap. movie looks like crap no matter what.

i think they should give up on the punisher movies. they're never going to get it right.

I just want to say that, cheeky smile aside, Ray looks awesome in that photo and completely looks the way I would want the Punisher to look. It was a great idea to cast him, even if the movie fails.

New from Disney Studios, coming fall 2009, the Punisher: Frank Castles' Princess Tea Party!!!

Vlad, I agree, how hard is it to make a good Punisher movie? Maybe Max Payne will give us what we hoped for from Punisher, since they're similar characters anyway.

Marvel, you need to work on getting your other franchises back!

If this goes PG-13, I promise you there's a snowball's chance in hell I'll go see it. I'm already on the fence with the mystery surrounding Lexi's recent absence.
  • Is it really so hard to make a solid, well done Punisher movie? WTF!? I can't understand it. It seems like such an easy permise/concept to put to film. FAHK!!!!!!

I think its funny that lionsgate belives that the dark knight did well because it was pg-13 it did well because it was good.when I go see a comic book movie I don't expect the movie to be just like the comics I treat it as if its another story arc because the stories of the characters have been writing so many different ways but it still catches the spirit of character. The dark knight did well because it captured the spirit of the batman. The punisher has always been violent so to edited it for ratings sake is a bad idea if its rated r its rated r just because it is rated r does not mean it will lose out 300 and sin city were rated r and many liked the movies because it captured the spirit of the comics it may have lost a audiance because of the rateing but it gained respect because it did not compromise it was what it was
  • i assume if they cut it to PG-13, the final cut will be about 17 minutes. i sense a fail

At first, I thought this movie was gonna blow. But after hearing who the director was and what she was going for, I was all of a sudden on board. Now, after the very unfortunate news of Lexi leaving and this PG-13 talk, I can't find it within myself to support this.

I don't know why you are still outraged and suprised about this. You watch. Robocop and all these movies where the producers give lip service to an R rating are all going to fold.

    Dear Lionsgate,

    You make Saw.
    Saw is Rated R.
    Saw makes lots of money.
I know this, because you made 5 of them.

    Hence...

    make Punisher an R-movie.
    Please.

    Sincerely,
A potential fan (who will not pay money for a potential Hitman 2).

This movie needs to be rated R. I can't believe Hollywood is screwing up another comic book franchise. The Punisher is one of my favorite characters and someone needs to do the character justice on the big screen. I just hope it's good, at least decent.

    are you kidding me?

The red band trailer was ridiculously gory, that means, everything in that trailer will be cut

It figures that would do this to a film that I thought was going to be good based on the red banned trailer. I am a fan of the first film and the sequel looks like an improvement. I was looking forward to ass-kicking, heads exploding, and excessive bad language. But thanks to Hollywood executive assholes, it looks like that isn't going to come true. So, now they will even be lucky if I even consider renting this movie.

I was skeptical about the new Punisher film until I heard Lexi Alexander was the director. Green Street Hooligans was an amazing film. I am a big fan of hers.

But after hearing the crappy music attached to the trailer at comic-con, along with the boot of Alexander as director and now this PG-13 trailer, I can definitely say that I'm not going to watch it at all in theaters, I might rent it when it comes on dvd. That'll be the most they'll get out of me. I have seen the Dark Knight twice in theaters now and once in IMAX. But I'm now so turned off by Lionsgate and this film, it'll be lucky to get $3.50 out of my pocket.

Okay, I honestly not crazed for the new Punisher film but WTF! What's the point of filming total bloodshed with Lexi Alexander as director?? Lionsgate... YOU SUCK BALLS!
  • sean coates
JIMBO YOUR AN IDIOT, this new version is gonna be way better. We want death GIVE IT TOO US !!!
  • Lionsgate,

Don't fuck this up. Don't compare this flick to "The Dark Knight". There is on comparison because they're different fucking movies. Frank Castle is nothing like Bruce Wayne and The Punisher is nothing like Batman. Batman puts criminals in an asylum. The Punisher puts them 6 feet under. I'm a huge fan of the Punisher MAX comics and this movie has that feel.

Make it "R". Make it bloody. Make it worthy of the title. If you're going to drop it to PG-13, you might as well CGI Dolph Lundgren's face over Ray Stevenson's and call it "Remember That Time The Punisher Was Naked: War Zone".

    Thanks.
  • Wes_YDKSmovies
Honestly, I could care less either way. This movie looked terrible even when it had loads of violence in it.
  • jimbo stewart
Good. This movie looked like utter shit anyway.

The first Punisher movie was the only one that got it right.

Though Tom Jane was good in the last one.

    Lexi Alexander, just go away...
  • ashwilliams
Frank Castle can't kill in pg-13 style. He don't catch criminals, he kills criminals. If Lionsgate do that, they deserve die by The Punisher.
