I know you guys missed the hell out of me during the ustream last night, my apologies for that.

Living got in the way, but I promise I'll do my best to make it next week!

Pineapple Express was made to be viewed HIGH. You can NOT watch this movie stone cold sober and expect to be in on the joke.

Watching PE sober is like watching a 3D movie without the 3D glasses.

The opening scene was hilarious because it was made for that first 30 minutes of being high when you're taking the ride up; and Bill Hader was that apex of highness which was perfectly hilarious.

And what you didn't mention, because none of you saw it high, was that it was filmed in a way which made us high viewers feel as though we were there. There was no 4th wall because we were the 4th person.

It was the perfect stoner movie because it went with the flow of a good high, “It feels good in my brain!” As a high audience member that point was perfectly clear.

Another thing you guys missed was the way they spoke. It wasn't over the top stoner speak like Cheech and Chong. It was true to form. Slow and methodical, always making a sincere effort to access the reality situation.

However, it wasn't the best stoner movie of all time; that award goes to (and this is not a joke) the movie 300. Try watching that high sometime and you'll understand, boy will you understand.

you shouldn't have to physically alter your mind or brain to understand or 'get' a movie.
that's like saying I need to shoot up on heroine to understand The Wire, or to enjoy it to it's full potential.
sounds like a stupid "excuse" to do drugs imo.

Wow. Hunter, by opening your mouth, you've proven why you haven't and don't deserve to be on this podcast. I've mentioned the thing with Devin from CHUD, but now it seems you also have a beef with Seth Rogen. You're absolutely right when you say that these guys should be held to a very high standard considering their past successes. Yet you act as if they churned out something along the lines of Meet the Spartans. I'm not sure who said that you'd be very hard pressed to pick out the improv in the movie, but they were right. The only instance where a line was obviously improved and didn't work was Gary Cole's "Say something in Spanish" line. Adam took a lot of heat for turning your negatives into positives, but fortunately for him, your points didn't hold any water. You should take into consideration how your colleagues shrugged off most of your comments.

Step Brothers? Ok, you can't argue what's funny and what's not because it's a matter of opinion, so I won't. But Step Brothers was marketed as a comedy. Instead, you got an hour and thirty five minutes of unfiltered improv from Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly gift wrapped in poorly structured and nonsensical movie. I would not be surprised if the unholy trio of McKay, Ferrell and Reilly got together and said, "Let's make sure we use some of the jokes we didn't use in Talladega Nights and change them to fit the context of this movie." Step Brothers was the product of the filmmakers getting together and saying,"Look at what we've made in the past. Now sit through this steaming pile of BS." Pineapple Express was not.

I enjoyed this podcast, Hunter. It's nice to know that I'm not alone in thinking that you're a complete dunce.

    @jelohac

I hope you drive for a living.

They discussed several excellent television series, but no one mentioned Rescue Me. I love that show. I'm curious as to what everyone thinks about it. Also, the Sopranos is easier to appreciate if you put some time between episodes. I loved the first 3 seasons on the air, but when it came to watching the dvds, it lost its flare.

As for the PE comments. I find the whole "you have to be stoned to get it" comments ridiculous. I've experienced plenty in my day, and I must say that altering one's mind may aid in appreciating some jokes; it seems to dull down the action and plot development. PE wasn't THAT great anyway.
  • Leave hunter alone! I agreed with him completely.

    @ Hunter Stephenson

You hope Jelohac drives for a living? What a duche bag thing to say. I guess it is true what they say about you.

Truth is, what the dude had to say is spot on. The movie was made to watch stoned and it works quite well on that level.
  • Happy as can be
    @ Kirk

You'll come to understand that Hunter is never about what's best for /Film or it's readers,
  • I felt bad for Adam listening to this, trying to defend Pineapple Express. I've read a lot of unnecessarily harsh things about this movie, and I think it's because of a couple things:

    1. People read and hear way too much from the filmmakers that influences how they watch the movie. Stop watching trailers and shit and just watch movies on your own. Who cares if they said they were making an "action-comedy" and they actually made a "comedy-action" movie?

    2. Some of these folks have a completely different sense of humor. I'm imagining the person that laughs out loud at jokes on Studio 60 or Sex and the City, with their contrived/forced humor, and doesn't find things like Scrubs or Arrested Development very funny.

This movie was hysterical and well-made. Stop having so many expectations and enjoy watching movies.

“You have a lot of people...they go in there wanting to like it. How much of the reaction of people loving this film do you think has to do with that expectation going in? When people want to love something...usually it’s hard to sway them the other way.”

Wow, everyone was way too harsh on Pineapple Express. I mean that quote could have easily been applied to The Dark Knight but wasn't.
