Due to a number of reader requests and the unprecedented success of this viral marketing campaign (if true!), Slashfilm will finally address The Montauk Monster. When a foul, suspiciously beaked creature allegedly washed ashore a beach near Montauk, Long Island last month, the above photo captivated the world’s cubicle inhabitants thanks to the diligently crazed, beloved reportage of Gawker. Was “Monty” a dead dog evidently done in by Paulie Walnuts? A harmless water rat/Satan? Colbert theorized it was John McCain. Others said it was a discarded lovechild of John Edwards. CNN introduced the meme to parents, who heply brought it up at dinner. As our crippled collective imaginations ran wild, skeptics of cryptozoology/Nick Denton posited that it was viral marketing for Cloverfield 2 or Adult Swim.

Warmer, Internets.

According to MontaukMonster.com and seconded by Gotham News and now Gawker, the creature might be a viral marketing prop for an indie movie about carnival subculture entitled Splinterheads, currently filming in Long Island. The film stars Lea Thompson, Rachel Taylor (Transformers) and Christopher McDonald (above photo, Fanboys, Dutch). On the director’s photo blog, Sersen Park, there is an implied shoutout underneath the monster’s pic to Rachel Goldberg—evidently the sister of the film’s producer Darren Goldberg—who “discovered” the monster and went to the press. See: this giggly interview. A few days ago, the above photo was posted on the film’s official website with the words, “We have the Montauk Monster” but this has since been removed. The page is cached here.

If true, it’s highly puzzling that Splinterheads’ filmmakers haven’t taken a more aggressive approach to linking their film and the legendary monster-pic sensation, especially so late in the game. As Gawker points out, perhaps it’s a ghetto hoax inside an uberhoax. But if “Monty” is indeed a guerilla publicity stunt for a $1 million movie (or any film), we suggest JJ Abrams make a toast. Developing (in our minds)…

Discuss: If you’re on the case of the Montauk Monster, what have you heard? Do you think it’s a viral marketing stunt or simply a cute raccoon exploited for Internet hits and filler for talking heads?

Game: Using the three actors above, is the monster six degrees of Kevin Bacon? Update: /Film commenter, The Marquis, solved it first: Christopher Mcdonald was in Rumor Has It with
Jennifer Aniston, who in turn starred with Kevin Bacon in Picture Perfect. Tada.

    ... I'd hit it.
  • ---,-JE.,RRY --B-U.-T-L-E-R
btw, i use to work at a nudist beach. We've all seen tons of those washing around the surf. they are called "midwest house wives"
  • Mr.Jagil
I'm pretty amazed by this. Nicely done. I'm a bit worried though; viral marketing leads to great expectations, and judging by his resume, i'm not sure if he can live up to it (but i could be up for a surprise).
  • If it is a fake/viral campaign, then they did a pretty good job presenting it as legitimate news for a week or however long it's been out there. So, good work on that one.

Part of me is sad, though, if it is a hoax. I want monsters.
  • Captain Awesome
I've never heard or even seen this campaign before.
  • Isn't that thing supposedly called a chupracabra or something? Its an urban legend I think. Apparently its a dog that lives underground.
  • Captain Awesome
    heh Justin,

It is fake. They have a picture of another creature floating around on the net. One site says this was done for some sort of "drink". But who knows.
  • Hunter Stephenson
    @ CA

The drink theory is bunk. Click the Gawker link above for definitive/maddening coverage....if you dare.
  • 790
How is this a viral marketing ploy ???
Next thing you know were gonna get a new report on Batboy and there gonna say he's gonna be in the next Dark Knight movie.
    Gimmeafuckingbreak)

    Sidenote:
Anyone that has done the reseach on Montauk Point, knows about the secret military base located underground there,,, there's supposedly an underwater enterance to a huge Submarine complex. If this photo is legit this creature is more than likely a mutated Sea Lion, prob caused by exposure to radiation.
  • Hunter Stephenson
    @ 790

    Done the research? Ha.

Yeah, it's called Plum Island. So this is either confirmation of a "mutant animal army" on Plum Island per Gawker's claim or part of a viral marketing campaign. Let's put those on a scale.
  • 790
My point was the research on Montauk Point.
This photo came out last week and was on every online new site, not once until on /Film was it considered a viral marketing ploy.
  • Hunter Stephenson
    @ 790

"not once until on /film was it considered a viral marketing ploy."

Did you not notice all of the links provided above in support of this new "Splinterheads marketing ploy" theory? When the photo first hit, it was thought to related to Cloverfield 2. We didn't report it, because there was no evidence. The connection to Splinterheads is explained above, and more thoroughly in the links (the investigation site, Gotham News and Gawker). If you go to Montauk Monster .com, there are plenty of photos that lend credit to the "prop theory."

I haven't once seen this referred to as a "sea lion exposed to radiation from a 'huge Submarine complex' funded by the U.S. government." This seems to be your own personal theory. If not, offer some links like we did to back it up.

Splinterheads is also mentioned on the Montauk Monster's Wikipedia page, predating this Slashfilm post.
  • It's a dead raccoon. Not part of some lame ass viral marketing campaign. Not proof of some supposed secret military complex. It's a dead raccoon.

Comments like above are precisely the reason why society is headed towards the future outlined in "Idiocracy."
  • Whiskey
What will said, it's a fucking raccoon.
  • 790
    Ooooooooooooooooooo
Oh my apolgies on that, I don't rumage thru all the links provided on stories like this. :-(

This photo if REAL has to have a logical explanation, if its FAKE, then whatever, a new viral marketing campaign is hatched. (I couldn't care less)

My radiation theory was my first impression when I saw this photo a week ago.
Current fringe research on the Chupacabra , leads some reserchers to speculate that Coyotes have made their way into high radioactive areas in the southwest regions of the US.
The ocean is no different there are areas of the ocean that are massive radiation dumps. I could see this story sidetracked into a Viral movie stunt to take the attention off that.
  • AnthonyWC70788
I think someone is just trying to capitalize off of something that is not there. The reason it was reported on all these news outlets because it was real. As far as Splinterheads is concerned it is just merely someone trying to capitalize off of a story to build for there 1 million dollar movie. lol, it is almost like what other viral campaigns did off of CLoverfield. They used cloverfields trailer to start or attract people to their virals. Hunter I think you are either trying to or making something out of nothing and you are falling in with the exact people that bite off of other stuff to make them more profitable. If you make a movie that cost only a million dollars then you probably dont have much money for advertising, whats an easier way to do that then this. Use something that is already established to draw attention to you even if you have nothing to do with it. Think about it. Just my opinion.... Anthony
  • Adam B.
    he's a cute little fella. :D
  • Rachel Summers
    its actually a dog, ya'll.
  • Christine
If this is marketing... Damn, nicely played! Just the rumor that it could be will get this movie tons of press.
  • 790
The way things are shaping up, this story will be a fart in the breeze two weeks from now.
  • ---,-JEEE.,RRRY --B-U.-T-L-E-R
Bummer they carted this thing away off the beach. that thing could have fed 20 hobo's for a week.
  • TheMarquis
Monster is viral ploy for Splinterheads with
    Christopher Mcdonald who was in
    Rumor Has It... with
Jennifer Aniston, who was starred, in turn, with
    KEVIN BACON in Picture Perfect.

    Tada.
  • Christian
    The monster to Kevin Bacon:

Christopher McDonald was in Broken Flowers with Jeffrey Wright, who was in Syriana with George Clooney, who was in Ocean's 11 with Brad Pitt, who was in Sleepers with Kevin Bacon.

Not completely six degrees, but close enough lol.
  • Max
  • Tyler J
It's a dog.. the beak is deteriorated snout tissue. The paws have fur that has receded up the leg, looking like leather straps...the tail is most likely a dog's, the back paws look just like a dog's and the notion that this could be an aquatic creature is stupid - what aquatic creature (save for the platypus) would need fur and a long tail like that? Oh, and huge canines.

It's a dead dog that washed up on the beach.

I doubt highly that it's viral advertising.
  • evanz
    @Max

Brilliant. Thanks for posting the link.

    No problem evanz.

  • Liz
Came here to post what Tyler J posted, but I hadn't seen Max's link before. I think that answers the question of what it might actually be/be based on, but it could still be some kind of prank or something viral, I guess.
  • 790
R.I.P. montauk monster prop dead dog thing.

The Montauk Monster is a viral marketing gimmick for Splinterheads starring Lea Thompson
Lea Thompson was in Back to the Future 1-3 with Michael J Fox
Michael J Fox was in Homeward Bound with Don Ameche
Don Ameche was in Cocoon with Steve Guttenberg
Steve Guttenberg was in Diner with Kevin Bacon

You guys are stupid. Have you not seen ghostbusters? its a gargoyle protector of zule. duh.
  • WTF
  • Tony Webster
Wow, this is a gratuitously disgusting use of web advertising. First, why do ads have sounds? The smiley faces at the top started screaming "HELLO?!?!" when my mouse accidentally passed over it. And then I made the mistake of moving my mouse again, which hovered me over one of six fake ad links, which played an irrelevant and unwanted video.

Seriously, it detracts from any potential legitimacy this blog might have had. And it's enough for me to never want to come back here. There are better ways to advertise without pissing off your potential readers. Piss us off, and not even the most annoying ads will get you revenue.

I'm afraid how many pop-ups I'll get when I close this window...
  • briaimator
It's just a partially decomposed raccoon:

    http://www.hamptons.com/detail.ihtml?id=4474&am...

Weird looking, yes, but nothing special. Always consider the rational answer before jumping to uneducated improbable conclusions about aliens, monsters or government radiation experiments gone awry. It's just a raccoon.
  • DrMister
Oh for crying out loud! Drowned animals in that advanced state of decomposition can look even more bizarre. It's basic animal anatomy, folks. Do some research on the internet, or hang around a beach for the summer. The "beak" is the front part of the racoon's snout minus the actual nose. The bloated carcass is very typical of a drowned mammal. You guys wouldn't want to see what happens when that splits open.
  • agent 36
maybe its the new jackalope, like a "racruss", a racoon and walrus combined. either way some taxidermy was probably involved in this, those taxidermist people are sick and need a new hobbie.
  • david sotelo
“According to kookbusting site Montauk-Monster.com, the creature was most likely a prop used in Goldberg’s film Splinterheads. It quotes a mystery source called “Tonya,” who explains the stunt will be revealed when the flick comes out next year. “Tonya” stated that the original pictures of the Montauk Monster were a stage prop from the Splinterheads movie set. “Tonya” also mentioned that there will be a scene in the movie where the Montauk Monster will be revealed.”

    http://www.sersenpark.com/

    and thats that
  • Apropos
I heard it was a turtle out of its shell. That collar of furlike substance around its neck belies this, though, and turtles don't have carnassial teeth like that.
The "beak": I think that's a septum, it just looks like a beak from the angle in the picture.
Eh, well. If it's viral marketing, no skin off my nose. (yes, pun intended ;))
  • I want to think it came from the gov. testing facility but this seems so much more likely.
  • mysticalsister
There is something strange about the two photos of the "monster". Photo 1, the most frequently used photo by the media, shows it with a head too small for it's body and a small lower jaw. Also, it clearly has a beak. The 2nd photo looks like a boiled dog. It has a large lower jaw and a weird nose, but it doesn't look like a beak. It's head is much larger and more in proportion with the body, than in photo 1, and it's teeth are less prominent. the coloring on both animals is different as well. I see a conspiracy here. Someone took away the mutant and then took a photo of a dog to throw people off the track of what is really going on. But what is going on?
  • I spent some time checking out all of the information on this site and others like Montauk-Monster.com and www.Gawker.com; I couldn’t believe they even had it on www.Wikipedia.com ! That’s incredible. After looking at this, in my own personal opinion, I think it’s some kind of dog. The only reason that I say that, is because it had that cloth looking bracelet piece on it’s wrist. If someone did fake this, they sure did a pretty good job. My official guess would be that it was a dog though.
    Fantastic site, by the way!
