Seth Rogen just got a free pass. I mean, a 9.5, CHUD? Really? FirstShowing declares Pineapple Express “breaks new ground” and implies it’s the “best stoner comedy ever made.” I’m not really sure what movies one must zoom past to make the best stoner comedy of all time. Is The Big Lebowski king? Garnering this superlative is sort of like being the world champion at MAPPY in The King of Kong. More accurately, Rogen’s film might be the best stoner comedy by default, because it will make you wish you stayed home, packed a huge bowl and watched Caddyshack, or Fletch, one of the hazy ’80s 10.0 action-comedies this aspires to be. The first scenes with Rogen in PE are a pale, if loving, homage to that Chevy Chase classic’s aliases like Dr. Rosenpenis, likewise with the adrenalized, instrumental theme music.

Pineapple Express stumbles as an original comedy, a stoner movie and a buddy action film. It lacks the liquid-bowel laughs of last summer’s Superbad, which was also written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg. And remember the awesome fan-made Superbad: The Action Movie trailer we posted? That two-minute clip exuded the superior goofball tension and ratatat gunfire I expected when Seth Rogen expressed surprise at getting the greenlight for this “risky” blend of inhales and mayhem.

So, where the hell is this film’s totes awesome “exploding toilet”-like action sequence set to MIA’s “Paper Planes”? Where is “Paper Planes”? That song’s inclusion in the trailers undoubtedly netted this movie an extra $5-10 million, but it’s MIA. It would have loaned the by-numbers fisticuffs and explosion at the climax a passable sense of peril. Never before has a chubby guy doing generic action moves been this overblown. An argument against this review and in defense of the movie will be: “Well, it’s not supposed to be as funny as Superbad” and “it’s not supposed to be as action-y as Lethal Weapon.” And therefore the movie is not supposed to be really funny or really thrilling, correct? And the justification is, “it’s a stoner movie, OMG, it’s not supposed to be that good in general”? Okay.

Pineapple Express is essentially a party sub in which all of the dead and bloody stuff is unevenly packed into the last third; followed by endless amounts of lazy meta-improv between James Franco, Rogen and Danny McBride (who almost saves the movie) sitting on their self-gratified asses telling us how amazing the movie we just watched was. In the Judd Apatow-produced and much funnier, Step Brothers, Will Ferrell & Co. go out with a bang with a rock opera, some unclassic Billy Joel, and the affable phrase “Fucking Catalina Wine-Mixer!” If PE is the new gold standard for American comedy as proclaimed by every glossy magazine this month, I’m going to go take a shit and read my collection of National Lampoon magazines for the next year like the black dude in Summer School.

CHUD says that James Franco deserves an Oscar nomination for his “breakout role” Saul Silver. Why? For stealing Brad Pitt’s resin-torched laugh in True Romance and pronouncing the word “man” like it’s made out of taffy (or “God’s Vagina,” one of the only good lines here)? The chemistry and the bromance Franco and Rogen shared 10 years ago on Freaks and Geeks felt genuine and was far more impressive. Their aimless stoners were similarly brought together by the randomness of life i.e. high school. And Franco gives great performances in that series—he’s consistently hilarious and inventive throughout. When his Freak apologized to Rogen’s Freak after making a joke at the expense of the latter’s tuba-playing girlfriend having a baby cock, viewers cried (many were high)! It was brilliant. When Rogen and Franco have their falling out in Pineapple Express, followed by a stilted apology, it doesn’t mean anything, even for a “lowbrow action comedy” in the spirit of Lethal Weapon or 48 Hours. Clearly, the filmmakers want and need us to be invested, but it plays like two kids with lobotomies walking in opposite directions after an argument. You could debate that these characters are supposed to be exactly that (and you’d feel tainted), and you could debate that this describes many American moviegoers when they exit the theater (and you’d be right, or Hollywood Elsewhere).

In contrast, we believe that Harold and Kumar depend on each other because they’re both insecure about their futures, girls, unpredictable off-road trips, white people and NPH’s ecstasy habit. And they both really enjoy good weed. Cheech and Chong are bonded by alliteration, road trips, stupidity, poverty, broads, and the carefree fuck-the-man fumes (nice dreams?) of the ’60s and ’70s. And they both really enjoy good weed and blow. In Smiley Face, Anna Faris is the modern, funny but troubled girl (and all guys have dated one) who goes it solo, smokes herself out and simultaneously symbolizes the answer and problem to everything today (which is why “that girl” tends to ultimately disappear or become a doctor or lawyer). Stoner comedies tend to reflect and subvert the day’s culture. Rather than subverting our culture, Pineapple Express blows it back at us, to the point where a promising indie director named David Gordon Green is being cheerleaded by critics for making a just-average crowdpleaser and “adequately handling action.”

In place of the timeless comedic duo we expected from the “New Kings of Funny,” we’re offered a wannabe M. Fletch Fletcher and a talented actor who’s impersonating an actor playing a stoner and seems secretly bored. And why Rogen and Franco’s characters aren’t shot in the head by the film’s goons, nicely played by Kevin Corrigan (a great stoner in Freaks and Geeks) and Craig Robinson (The Office), before this overhyped comedy goes soggy Black Rain is a valid question not worth wasting good weed on.

6/10 (Adam Sandler’s Bulletproof x High Times porn = Overhyped, Subpar Apatow Flick)

P.S. Nikki Finke just referred to Slashfilm as “pothead fanboys.”

You said Step Brothers was better than this. Step Brothers was absolutely terrible. If I go see Pineapple Express and it's clearly better than Step Brothers, I'll never read a review by Hunter Stephenson again... who I might add somehow says something that is completely wrong or absurd in almost every post.
  • sean coates
lmao hunter i dont know what u were on when u saw this movie ...obviously it wasn't weed i went to see it last night with people who did and didnt smoke ..the whole theater was laughing the whole way threw soo much soo that u couldnt hear the follow up jokes soo i gotta see it again ..DONT LISTEN TO HUNTER THIS MOVIE IS AMAZING
  • joshmayhood
I've seen Step Brothers twice. It's so goddamn funny.

I have a feeling this is probably a different type of comedy, and i'm hoping it's good, as i've been anticipating it since the red band trailer came out. But I don't expect it to be funnier than Step Brothers.

I partially agree with Hunter. Although I found James Franco hilarious (not oscar worthy) it really was Danny McBride who made this movie. I also thought the final scene was great. For me the movie fell apart with the action stuff. The final shoot out in my opinion was way to generic and went on way too long and the action was one of the reasons I was excited for the movie. I also felt that Gary Cole and Rosie Perez were miscast. Also what was up with that whole asian subplot? It felt wildly out of place to me.

ITS A STONER COMEDY ................think about it !!!
  • mj pico
wow, i could not disagree more. i saw this last night and thought it was great and much better than step brothers. with all due respect, Mr. Stephenson you should not be allowed to live, much less review anymore movies, again i say that with all due respect.

Yeah I dunno... I used to read firstshowing but I like Peter's writing and movie taste a lot more. It would be cool if Hunter and Peter both wrote on slashfilm though.

I'm gonna see this movie regardless. I can't wait to see Peter's review of it.
  • Completely agree with this review. Here is my take:

  • Lenny
Franco has said that the character of Saul is 100% based on Floyd from True Romance. I thought that was awesome when I read it before I saw the movie and it works perfectly as far as I'm concerned now that I have seen it.
I've seen both SB and PE they're both funny but very different.
Now here's to hoping Tropic Thunder is funnier than both!!

Wow, what a harsh review... everything I read is the opposite (as you mention) I think I with those reviews, I do not want to nor think this movie will only be a 6/10, and I hope I am right.
  • Jeffrey Garten
-Stepbrothers was actually really fucking funny (coming from a wes anderson/david lynch/kubrick fan)

-I smoked weed for like (literally) 6 hours before seeing that movie and it wasn't that funny or great (Dark Knight would have been better high).

-Danny McBride was the best part of the movie

-Jack Nicholson as Batman, Malcolm McDowell as Joker, Daniel Day Lewis as Two Face, Woody Allen as Mad Hatter, Anthony Hopkins as The Riddler.

    That is all.
  • I liked it, does have some flat moments but other parts (like the last half hour of the movie) make up for it. I would give it a rating slightly over a 7.
  • richard branson
Hunter Stephenson is always right. My favorite reviewer when he reviews cause he always gets it right.

    More Hunter less Chen!!!!!
  • erik
From your review it sounded like you were going to give it a much lower score. I do agree with you for the most part, especially with Step Brothers being way funnier, but I did enjoy most of it and would probably give it a 7/10.
  • Thankyoufor
    dude this movie was hilarious
thats the thing about comedy everyone has REALLY dif taste with them
  • The Jezzus
I'm a check it out regardless. I trust Hunter though.
  • Captain Awesome
You're on crack Hunter. But I like you better than Chen. So I'll let this bad review pass. Step Brothers fucking sucked by the way!

I give it an 8/10 (whatever the fuck that means)

What? "Pineapple Express lacks the liquid-bowel laughs of last summer’s Superbad, which was also written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg."

WTF!? Are you high? You ARE high! You're high as a fucking kite!

Goddamn man. Pineapple Express was fucking hilarious! We laughed our ASSES off watching it. Superbad on the other hand was just one huge bizarre "meh" with a couple of lackluster laughs thrown in.

    Seriously. You must be joking.

Pineapple Express = 8/10. Would be a 9 if the ending didn't go completely nuts on us.

This was a great stoner movie. I know because I was high off my ass when I saw it. This film gives a lot to the high audience member.

Bill Hader had me crying. We got high in the parking lot, so I was on my way up as the movie began and the way Bill was acting was exactly how I felt at the time.

When Rogen came on screen I could totally relate to his line about; by the government make weed illegal, law abiding citizens are forced to break the law and deal with drug dealers.

The scenes in Franco’s apartment were very real and funny. It didn’t seem like acting. If they were adlibbing they did a great job. The way it was filmed I felt like I was in the apartment itself.

The music was really funky 70s shit and that put me into a good groove.

Because the first part of the movie was so much fun, the violence, when it began, was shocking. There were lots of turns and they never spent too much time in one place, so I never got bored, however, by the end I was ready to get the hell out of there.

Afterwards we went home, smoked up some more, did some late night bicycling around the neighborhood followed by skinny-dipping under the stars.

If you got you some weed, go see this movie.
  • Jud
I totally agree with this review, people were already up this movie's ass a long time before it came out, so naturally when it got released tons of people went in already knowing they would come out liking it no matter what happened. This movie is certainly not better than Superbad, by any means, and wasn't funnier than Step Brothers. That said, it was a good film, funny with an actual plot, where Step Brothers was just a showcase. Going into P.E. I was expecting more, and when it didn't live up I couldn't give it a mulligan just because it's a Rogen/Apatow creation. Unfortunately that seems to be the case in most reviews so I'm glad to see an honest one.

  • kyle
step brothers was funnier? that movie was one of the worst experiences i have ever had. PE was great, not awesome, but great.
  • Hunter Stephenson
    @ kyle

Since when does "awesome" supersede "great"?
  • John
you know, I have to agree with Hunter's take on the film. I saw this two months back when they had the screening at the Alamo Drafthouse with the actors and director there. I felt the first act of the film nearly ruined it all, and I do agree that Danny McBride saved this movie from being a near disaster. It's not that great of a film really. I can see myself giving it 7/10, and honestly, while walking after the film, I really felt like I was forcing myself to love it when I didn't. Trust me, I saw Tropic Thunder recently, and it is far superior to Pineapple Express. PE isn't Superbad, and is nowhere near Superbad, and I'm tired of people saying it's better than that or is on the same level, because it isn't.

Step Brothers was really funny though. Was it funnier than PE? Maybe, I don't know. When I see PE again, I'll be able to say.
  • Dixxy
LOL Huntard Stephenson is a tool.

I saw this movie last night with a couple friends at the Arclight Hollywood right after getting baked in the parking lot. This was one of the top 5 funniest and most entertaining comedic movie experiences I've ever been apart of.

Wtf was that review all about?!? What was he watching? If Huntard feels the need to unravel the plot, dissect every scene, compare people's performances to others like he's doing, he just totally missed the point and should prolly go get himself some better herb, smoke himself out and go try again.

James Franko KILLLLLED it in this movie. I mean, everytime he opened his mouth in the movie the whole theatre was laughing to death. What does that tell you? Oscar? Pssh, who knows. Fuck the Oscars. He definitely deserves some kind of award which he wont get but it was definitely a breakthrough performance.

    Hunter Stephenson...pfft, what a blowtard.
  • I don't think this was a through and through comedy as much as people suggest. Don't get me wrong -- it's very funny but it's more of a Hot Fuzz-type of 80s buddy action pastiche rather than "another comedy with Seth Rogen".

And that final scene "where they tell us how awesome the movie we just watched was" really killed me for another reason. In every action movie, you KNOW, at some point, the principal characters had to have that sort of "can you believe what just happened?!" discussion and I can't remember ever seeing it on screen until now.

I also liked the repeated action movie dissections, with people surviving 8 bullet wounds and explosions and everything. Oh, and the score/source music were fantastically selected. And the production design. And the stunt choreography.

I'm not saying it's the greatest movie ever or the greatest from Rogen and company, just that I think a viewer approaching Pineapple Express as if it was going to be another Superbad or something was misguided (and not something I'll blame anyone for, as the promotion was kind of in that direction). It was more Hot Fuzz featuring the Apatow cast of characters than Superbad with action.
  • Dixxy
    @Justin
Well said and true. Its almost a bit Tarrentino like - the comedy was lol, the action was cheesy excessive exploitation style with peeps running around with bullet holes and explosions exploding too explosively.... but I find humor in all that. Even the attempts at sappiness were funny ("Here's some food money....Supersize it, bitch.") Hot Fuzz is a good juxtaposition. The "sum up the movie in a nutshell" talk at then end left everyone leaving the theatre laughing - it was a good close.
  • erik
I'm pretty sure everyone who's saying PE > Superbad, Hunter's an idiot, etc. were stoned when they were watching this movie. You could tell who the stoners were in the audience since they at everything, even the unfunniest of jokes. Try watching it again sober and I'm pretty sure you won't find this to be as good as you think.
  • Yes, Hunters the tool for disliking a movie for very valid reasons and the ones who insist you must smoke ridiculous amounts of weed to find it funny are not.

PS Chen is pretty nitpicky but he'll admit when a movie is good but just doesn't fit his taste
  • I disagree with Hunter yet again. What a surprise.
  • 790
The Grammer police,,, To insult and Point out.

Nice review Hunter as usual,,, (ppl calling for suicide can FO!!)
But this film looks like a bag full o stems and seeds. I hate Seth Rogan (like I hate mexican brown bud) and his rise to fame makes me question this dimension.....
I would have to be stoned for the first time (all gigly) to even sit thru this shit excuse for a stoner film.
  • Dixxy
    @790
Well sir, you are definitely not speaking for the majority. You might try Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: The Sequel. See? If you don't like something that was highly enjoyed by 95% of the targeted audience, there are always alternatives! God I love America..

Superbad has me in tears, Pineapple Express was pretty good, but no Superbad.

I was a little dissapointed myself.

    Still missing paper planes:-(

    Dixxy, you rock girl !!!

  • Stoned One
    erik,

This is a stoner comedy. It is written by stoners for stoners. I don't think that you are taking this movie for what it is. Watching it stoned makes you relate to a lot of the things. There were a lot of moments, which i know that I would have thought differently if I was sober. I totally understand why he HAD to grab the fruit roll-ups before he went on the run or why he had to all of the stupid shit that he did because he was stoned.

Just relax and enjoy the inane logic of the stoned mind. Don't think too deeply on this one, also don't take your comedy too seriously folks! It is there to make you laugh.
  • ---J-E.-,R,--Y --B-U.-T-L-E-R
Is this the Tropic Thunder thread?
  • I think the main issue with this movie is that Rogen and Goldberg haven't really had experience writing straight villains. There were no flat out 'bad guys' in Superbad. This is where PE misses. They set up enough of a story for the villain that you're interest is piqued but they never expand upon it.

I had hoped that David Gordon Green would have tried to expand the character depths like he has been adept at in his past films but I was left feeling that they were all missing something.

Regardless I found the film thoroughly entertaining.
  • adhdj
Wow. I couldn't disagree more. Sorry you didn't like the film, but that's no reason to harsh our buzz by saying Step Brothers was better. I bet you got excited about the attached Role Models trailer though, that sounds more like your sense of humour.

Me, I'm giving it a 9. Haven't laughed that hard this year, and I wasn't under the influence of anything.
  • Texas Terro
I give it a 8/10. The fight scene with mcbride franco and rogen was the best part.
  • Matt
Great movie. Stephenson unless u smoke weed, you didn't get this movie. It was literally directed right at stoners. It won't really make sense to someone who doesn't smoke just like Friday Night Lights or Any Given Sunday won't make as much sense to someone who never played football.

Smoke a blunt, see it again, then write another review.
  • Matt
Well said oh almighty Stoned One.
  • Hunter Stephenson
    @ Matt #1

You go to Washington U and all you can come up with is "unless u smoke weed, you didn't get this movie" and "duuuuude, smoke a blunt"?

Any Given Sunday was made from the perspective that modern day professional sports are laughable and filled with violent, celebrity-aspiring coke heads. Good analogy.

Take some Adderall, and then write another comment.
  • Danatic
I pretty much agree entirely. Superbad was such epic gold that I didn't expect this to compare, but didn't even reach thooose expectations. Step Brothers, while stupid, knew it was stupid, and ran with it. Pineapple Express, in comparison to Rogen's other stuff, was pretty much a bomb, but will make money and become 'successful' simply for the subject matter and star power of Rogen. The violence was random and not over the top enough to be comical, I really felt no bond between the characters, and needed a lot more Hader. PE ran with the premise that weed and stoners are funny, but never showed why.
