Five Innovations in James Cameron’s Avatar

Lets take a look at five of the many technological innovations that James Cameron employed in his upcoming sci-fi epic 3D film Avatar.

Performance Capture Workflow: A lot of the film was captured using a performance capture technique similar to that of which Robert Zemeckis filmed Beowulf. So Cameron developed a virtual camera which will allow his to point it at his actors and see them as their computer generated characters in real time.

Simulcam: A camera set-up which allows them to follow or monitor a virtual character which was captured in performance capture into a live action environment in real-time. It also allows them to see what a virtual backgrounds will look like in a live-action shot. I know that Steven Spielberg had a set-up like this on A.I., but I think it only showed him wireframes of buildings, and was very glitchy. My impression from Cameron’s quotes is that the new technology renders something a lot more visual, probably akin to a video game (likely more last generation).

Facial Capture Head Rig: The actors in performance capture suits also wear a camera rig on their heads that takes digital shots of the actor’s face. This allows the computer generated character to have 100% facial movement, even in the real time performance capture workflow mentioned above.

Facial Performance Replacement: In traditional filmmaking they use ADR (or additional Dialogue Replacement) when filmmakers need a cleaner take of the actor’s dialogue, or need to fudge in a new line. But with a traditional film, you really need to trick a shot to make it work. The lips don’t always match up, and sometimes, if you’providing an entirely new line of dialogue, filmmakers usually resort to a wide shot or a behind the head shot, so that you can’t see the lips of the actor on screen. Since 60% of Avatar is performance capture, he has designed a way to insert a new facial scan/dialogue capture on an existing performance.

Fusion 3-D Camera System: The Fusion 3-D camera system was co-developed by James Cameron and and Vince Pace. The rig uses two Sony HDCF950 HD cameras to create stereoscopic 3-D. Cameron first used the system on his 2003 IMAX film Ghosts of the Abyss. It has since been used by Robert Rodriguez on Spy Kids 3-D and The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, and most recently on Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert and Journey to the Center of the Earth. But I’m not exactly sure what improvements Cameron made to the rig over the last five years.

Its gonna suck. I can feel it.
  • ----J-E.-,R,--Y --B-U.-T-L-E-R
I hope this movie bombs. king of the world, my ass.
  • James C.
I have no idea what Avatar will be like. But I do know that I admire Cameron's patients in creating his work. Films are being made way too quickly these days. Ironman for example; it made money so they made a date for the sequel before even thinking it through. Will Avatar be any good? Probably. Will it make money? You bet it will. Hollywood needs to slow down and take notes from Cameron's pace.
  • Harrison and Steve
lol. charlie sheen is still posting for infowars. charlie i thought you and Alex were going to make that 9/11 movie. where is it..
  • Mr. Annoyed
God forbid he or Zemeckis actually put HUMAN BEINGS on the screen.
  • charles
    @ Harrison

Wow, how did you know it was me? But anyway check out the truth.
  • september11th
    better motion capture for cgi
    better facial capture for cgi
    cgi performance replacement
    cgi character camera tracking

    this is retarded.
    beowulf in space.
  • KitPatrol
They make such a big deal about all these technologies. Yet just take one look at Pixar - they animate everything by hand, without all this motion capture crap. Stop making technology do all the work for you and let the humans use their own talents - I have a feeling Avatar will be yet another trip into uncanny valley.

Why all the hate. We haven't seen any footage of the movie. If your going to hate on the movie at least wait until you see the trailer.
  • Andrew
Someone remind me what is so great about James Cameron? Please? He made Terminator? The grossly overrated movie ripped off from an old science fiction show? The Abyss? Yawn. Alien, you know what, I liked, but nothing super special. And Titanic? That makes him the King of the World-but at what a price-a chick flick, how emasculating. You can say that Polanski, Scorsese, Coppola are overrated, but they are God compared to this guy. Steven Soderbergh, Robert Rodriguez, Michael Bay. All arguably overrated, but all of whom I love. Hell, I even like Oliver Stone more than Cameron. Cameron? Who is he? Sheesh
  • Adam B.
    eww, Avatar fails by default.
  • Captain Awesome
Can't wait to see this movie. Very excited about this project.

    haha @ Jerry...
  • Captain Awesome
    Andrew,

I wish I was smoking what you were smoking. If any of the works by Cameron don't impress you. You're an amazing bore of an individual. You can't be right? To push what he's done in film as some passer-by knock-off is childish and seriously empty.

Then you throw in Coppola (I haven't done shit since Dracula. My daughter ruined Godfather 3) and I Scorsese? While these guys have created some iconic and amazing films. You seem to forget the bombs they have also created. Bay, Rodriguez, and Stone over Cameron? Are you shitting me?

Please try to look at what Cameron's done in perspective and drop the cool "internet hate" for a second.
  • James Cameron
Thanks for all the comments guys. I would just like to say that your opinions meen fuck all to me. I am going to make a shit load of money from this movie, again, people are going to go and see it, and at least one or two oscars are in the bag. Thanks guys.
P.S Blow me, I'm king of the world ;)
  • JFK
It kind of looks like Cameron is sitting on his thumb...
  • moulie
Cameron ALWAYS does something that, at bare minimum, is at least interesting, regardless of genre. This is guaranteed to a visionary work. What kind of a director holds up a project for over a decade just so he has all the technology he wants? This has game-changing written all over it.
  • Captain Awesome
    JFK,

    He's watching AVP.
  • Andrew
Captain Awesome- I just came from Pineapple Express but I can assure you that I am not smoking anything. Perhaps I was abrasive, but I fail to see the appeal of James Cameron. Right, right I come across as an "internet tough guy." I have been entertained watching his movies (and tortured, see Titanic). He made big budget, high grossing popcorn flicks, I think the Michael Bay comparison is accurate. Terminator is one of the most insanely overrated movies I have ever seen. He is a big budget director a la Bay incapable of making a good film. And I don't mean they're not *good*. I have never failed to be entertained by a James Cameron film. They are good in that sense. But *good* on the same level as The Godfather? Taxi Driver? Chinatown? Not even close.
  • Andrew
I take back saying that I prefer Oliver Stone to Cameron. Couldn't sleep until I rescinded that comment.

Scorsese, Coppola, Polanski, Hitchcock, Wells, Kubrick, Godard, Fellini-I could go on and on. James Cameron can't touch them. Hell, who can?

What is Cameron? To me he is a more refined and creative Bay, and a less prolific Spielberg. Good director? I'll grant that any day. But as long as we know what context we're calling him *good*
  • Goobity
    @ Andrew:
Soderberg? Really? He made a good debut with Sex, Lies and Videotape. Then regurgitated three remakes of Oceans Eleven. Yeah, a ground-breaker. Michael Bay...Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, Transformers... Well, there's a craptasitc resume.

At least Cameron is devoting his time to develop new methods and technologies to advance visual effects, and the way stories can be told on film. The Terminator, Aliens, and even Titanic (like it or not) broke new ground in film production. His films may not be perfect, or even art, but he's years ahead of most.
  • Andrew
@ Goobity- I see your point, but I think Soderbergh is an interesting fellow. I don't knock him, I think he's done a good job with the mainstream stuff such as Oceans and then alternating with branching out. My point is not that Soderbergh is groundbreaking or the second coming of Christ. My point is that Cameron is good, but I can't stand the way he has this messianic following while there are equally good directors.
  • gocitizen
James Cameron creates his own stories, writes the screenplays, and has shown that he can design technology to fit his vision for those stories. That isn't impressive? Please, refer us all to the other current directors that are doing this.
  • Andrew
    Andrew: *puts on sheep costume*

    Cameron: resumes resting on laurels
  • Goobity
    @ Andrew:
Don't sweat it. I wouldn't count Cameron among the 20 best film-makers, if asked. Nor would I count George Lucas, or even Tarantino and Peter Jackson (Gasp!), and countless others. I do however recognize these folks and others as having contributed immeasurably to the advancement of cinema on the whole. There's a different breed of Directors who seem more concerned about innovation than actual product...Lucas, Cameron, Zemekis, Del Toro, Rodriguez (mostly), and others. Without them, the Popcorn producers wouldn't exist. It's win win, if you ask me.
  • Captain Awesome
    Andrew,

I see. You hate him because of how much others like or anjoy what he's done? or even getting as much respect as the guys "you" like.

That's retarded. Keep the sheep costume on.
  • Identitytheft
    STOP ALL THE POINTLESS HATE

James Cameron has, in terms or technical innovations, done more for the film industry than anyone else. I too am wary about taking another trip down the uncanny valley (why this fascination with creating fake people?), but if anyone can pull it off, it's definitely Cameron.
  • John
Like him. Love him? No. I don't think his stories are anything special, but he more than makes up for that with his directing ability and technical innovation. I see him as a visionary Michael Bay. And where do they get off calling Zack Snyder a "visionary" in the Watchmen trailer? He hasn't earned it-yet. Cameron is. Terminator bored me to death, but I loved Judgment Day. I was dragged to Titanic 3 times (UGH! WHY!!!!). Where've you been, James? Avatar had better blow me away! I'm sure he doesn't *need* to work, God knows he's loaded, but come on, we miss you! December 09 will not come fast enough
  • YoungZe
I can't wait to see the first screenshot ... -_-"
  • Cameron gets a free pass because of the awesomeness that is Aliens. Still iffy on this 'til at least the trailer.
  • Luke
How can you people say The Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, Terminator 2 or Titanic aren't art?? BTW, what is art to you people?

What movies are art as opposed to Cameron's films?

Avatar is going to blow our minds the way a Jim Cameron film should.
  • amir M. Dehestani
    hi dear folks
I am a film maker myself...and i must say that cameron is one of the greatest artist/filmmakers of our time...he has a passion for art ,cinema, literature ,science and technology ...as i know he is one of the few directors who can draw as well as a good comic book artist , and he can write very good scripts as good as best hollywood writers....he knows a lot about film technology and he is creating A V A T A R as a very important piece in cinema history (and not as just "another movie") he is creating film as a combination of art and technology and as an achievement of mankind...as i know he is Davinci of our time... a combination of a scientist and an artist....he is not making a movie in just 9 months(as spielberg did on War of the worlds!)....and we, as movie lovers should appreciate his value...
  • DF
I usually like Cameron's work... but if this ends up looking like Beowulf I'm OUT!
I prefer live action with live people. If I want something else I'd see a PIXAR movie. I don't need to see an adult story of WALL-E.
