First Look: The Road

Dimension Films has released new production photos for John Hillcoat’s upcoming adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s best-selling, Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Road in USA Today.

Academy Award nominee Viggo Mortensen, Academy Award winners Robert Duvall and Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce and 12-year-old Kodi Smit McPhee star in the the story of a man (Mortensen) and his young son (Smit-McPhee) traveling through a desperate, post-apocalyptic world. The flap jacket on the book describes the setting as “burned America”.

“Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other.”

And where do you find this post-apocalyptic burned America? In Pittsburgh of course. Hillcoat didn’t want to go the CGI route, and instead found abandoned coal fields, a deserted amusement park and an 8-mile stretch of closed freeway (some of which is seen above) in and around Pittsburgh. The photos look fanatically bleak.

The Road is scheduled to hit theaters in New York and Los Angeles in mid November and expand on November 26th 2008.

Those interested in this or fans of this book would also enjoy Swan Song by Robert McCammon(which would make a good film as well!)

Other than in my mind, I saw the main characters being African American, These guy are alright too. I can't wait. I still have my book from the library, maybe I should return it..

this novel is fantastic and i expect the film to do the same.
  • The question is:

Is Omar more of a badass in that picture above, or carrying his shotgun/trenchcoat combo in The Wire?
  • orange cinema
this book is heartbreakingly brilliant. this movie looks like it'll do it justice.
  • Cameron
The book is of the most bleak pieces of literature I've ever read. It was awesome.
  • Lee

  • Captain Awesome
I just finished this book 3 months ago and it was amazing. I haven't read a book with such a powerful theme and set of characters in it. Other than No Country... But this film is looking great so far and I LOVE the cast.

    Michael K. Williams? (hell yes!)
  • black mab

Great book and a quick read (for anyone afraid of reading anything longer than a blog). McCarthy is on a roll with the current adaptations. This father and son story might translate really well to film.
  • gah
OOOOOH...i wasn't too excited at first but these photos look cool. It's awesome to see a writer like McCarthy doing a post apocalyptic thriller like this.
  • This is MY kind of movie except that it is not in 3D. Can't wait to check this one out!
  • Potato
looks really really good. Read the book and loved it, first person I thought for the role was viggo and he's in it!
  • Captain Awesome
If this is anywhere as close as they can get to what is found in the book. I look forward to viewers reactions to it.

It's not the most happy-go-lucky storyline.
  • Euclid
I pictured the kid being a little younger but, juding by the pics it looks like they did a pretty good job of creating McCarthy's world. I dont know if it'll beat the book tho. I can't wait for the Blood Meridan, Damn and i just saw on imdb that they're doing Outer Dark too, i only got half way through that one.

Anyone else read any of his other books besides no country and the road? The man is an amazing story teller.
  • A.J.
HOLY SHENANIGANS! i CAN'T (oh sorry, caps got stuck) I can't wait for this movie! The book was fantastic. Vigo is a perfect cast! Kachowwwww!
  • brian
I loved the book. Loved it. Looks like they've got something here with the film. Anyone know what Charlize Theron's character is? Possibly the boys mother? I mean she was only in a few flashbacks in the book, nothing substancial though. Unless there was a significant detour from the book along that storyline.
  • Donivan
    Looks like a winner.
  • artgood
In USAToday it said that they expanded the mother's role in the story a little from the book for Theron.
  • davis
this couldn't look any more like the way i pictured it in my head while reading the book. amazingly spot-on.
  • sweet. I wonder if it has a non-linear storyline like NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN????????

I love Viggo and Charlize Theron, and this movie looks so sweeeet

    CAN'T WAIT ;)
  • Captain Awesome
    brian,

    Yes, she plays the mother.
  • Bouncermgr
This looks spot on to the way I pictured it in my head also. I'm all of a sudden really excited for this movie. I need to read Blood Meridian now so I can get pumped for that.
  • McGruff
Read this book in one sitting last year. Really wonderful and full of vivid writing. Entertainment Weekly rated it the #1 book of the past 25 years, so let's hope they do it justice. looks good so far!
  • Mr. B
I enjoyed the book, but I'm not sure why it's been so highly rated. Still, it looks like the film will be faithful. And the book is short enough that they will probably be able to keep most of it in the film. If they manage to keep the dialogue on the same level (short and minimal) as the book that is.
    Viggo looks perfect.
  • Mountain
I live down the street from a house where Cormac lived that seems to be the basis for the first house they enter in the book- where the father grew up. White house with gables/the son is afraid to go in. They should have shot there, the house is in ruins and is invaded by encroaching bamboo. Would have been perfect and more true to the area where the book takes place...rather than Pittsburgh. The movie looks nice, and should be better than most movies that the public is exposed to these days....
  • I just finished reading this book recently and these images are great. I think that they are doing the right thing with this by having a long post production. I would hate for it to be rushed and turn out crappy.
