Eli Roth in Inglorious Bastards

You’ll never guess who Quentin Tarantino has lined up to star in his epic World War II film Inglorious Bastards

Horror director Eli Roth

Roth will play the role of Sgt. Donnie Donowitz., a baseball bat-swinging Nazi hunter. Most of you probably remember that Roth also had a small part in Tarantino’s last film Death Proof. And by most of you, I mean the 4 million people that saw Grindhouse.

You can hate Roth’s movies all you want, but you have to give this guy credit as a personality. Roth can talk and out story-tell the best of them. I’ve seen him in person many times, and he has a command of almost any audience. There is no denying that he has a charismatic film geek charm. If Tarantino can exploit this, instead of having Roth spout off the normal over-wordy dialogue, it could end up being the surprise performance of the film. On the other hand, Hunter wanted me to mention that it is “the worst decision ever.” And honestly, he might very well be right. It could go easily go either way.

Tarantino is expected to announce the full cast shorty. As has already been reported, Brad Pitt is is talks to play the leader of the rogue Jewish-American soldier group. Plans to cast Leonardo DiCaprio as SS Col. Hans Landa have been scrapped in favor of casting a German actor.

Discuss: I’m sure many of you disagree with my opinion of Roth’s potential, so lets hear it - who would ahve been a better choice for the role?

I wish this cast was the very best of the best because this is my 2009 "The Dark Knight" can't fucking wait to see movie. However i think Roth is a good decision. He is a charismatic guy that i hope can hold his own acting.

But he fucking wears Mascara and eye shadow. Come on man!!!
  • I sure hope Roth's atrocious performance in DEATH PROOF was purely to aid the deliberate grindhouse feel Tarantino was aiming for, because if this hack acts anything like that in IB, it may tank the whole thing.

Roth is a smug and terrible decision - makes me skeptical of the whole film.

Hmmm...this isn't promising news. I hope the rest of the cast is
something to get excited about because I'm really looking forward
    to this film.

Tarantino farts gold. Anything he does I'm fully behind. Inglorious bastards will be great.

I loved Eli Roth's role in Southland Tales...

Roth totally owns dying on the $hitter.

I am super-critical of movies, in general. So, it is surprising that I have liked all of Roth's films. He is film literate, and it shows in his work. He is also entertaining to listen to when speaking about his movies, or film in general. I never understood why he has been so disliked.
  • it is the worst decision ever. Donowitz is supposed to be tough and huge. Not a talky geek like Roth.

rg: I'm not a fan of the current trend of ultraviolent horror films that aren't actually scary, so I don't like Roth's films. I haven't seen many interviews with him, so I can't comment on him as a person.

i'm gonna go ahead and trust whatever QT decides to do. when all the people bitching accomplish what he has, then maybe i'll listen.
  • jimbo stewart
Hmmm... I don't like Roth but I'll give him a chance. Why didn't they go with Sandler? He seemed PERFECT for that part and it would be nice to see him shuck his comedy roots.

Whatever... QT has surprised me before. I'll look forward to this with tepid interest

I'm a big fan, actually, but I'm a little skeptical about his new acting career. I don't think his part in Death Proof was big enough to tell if he can act well or not. I'd agree that he has potential and definitely don't think that he'll be completely horrible, but I'd hate to see him end up being less than great and give the haters one more reason to bitch about him. Let's hope both him and Tarantino know what they're doing.

I don't even know what this is but the fact that it's a Tarantino film already makes it kickass. And I was one of the 4 million people that saw Grindhouse on a theater!
  • Captain Awesome
I like Roth's personality and charisma. I did love his fake trailer in GH.

But so far this sounds better and better to me. I really need to block out this media watch on this film. I'm going to go crazier and crazier waiting for it.

I really liked Roth in Grindhouse. I think I will like him in this.

I've never read the script but from what I've heard this character described as, and I don't have time to dig up the quote source but it's easily found on sites like this I think, he was a baseball bat weilding, "Golem" like character. The Golem reference made me think of a taller, more physically intimidating figure, maybe 7' tall and thicker than Roth. Though I'm down for whatever T and R bring.

Quentin Taratino & Eli roth are fabulous and makes a great team, and I can't wait to see Inglorious Bastards.

Eli was an untalented prick in film school and he's only gotten worse. Seriously, how often must he lick Tarantino's balls to gain such career assistance? If Eli had skill as an actor, he'd be acting in other movies. If he had skill as a director, he'd be directing something other than a Hostel sequel.

Eli Roth is a joke. He was a joke at NYU. He's a joke now that he's famous.
