Common is The Green Lantern

Production Weekly’s current issue has updated Warner Bros’ adaptation of DC Comic’s The Green Lantern as being in active development:

STATUS - Development
PRODUCER: Donald De Line - Andrew Haas WRITER: Greg Berlanti - Marc Guggenheim - Michael J Green
DC COMICS 1700 Broadway New York, NY 10019
WARNER BROS. PICTURES 4000 Warner Blvd. Burbank, CA 91522-0001

Each sector of space is protected by a Green Lantern, possessing a power ring that uses a powerful green energy to do anything within the limits of the user’s imagination and will power. When the Green Lantern assigned to this sector of space finds himself dying on planet Earth, he tells the ring to find a suitable successor. The chosen replacement, hot-shot test pilot Hal Jordan, finds himself with a new job he never expected.

No director is mentioned in the above update, although Greg Berlanti (Everwood, Eli Stone) was attached to the project last year.

Common

I also noticed that rapper-turned-actor Common told Entertainment Weekly at Comic Con that if he had to dress up for the convention, he would be dressed as The Green Lantern. Common, of course, was originally signed on to play Lantern in the now defunct Justice League movie. Could this just be an inside joke to fans in the know or could Common still be in line to play the character in a stand alone big screen film? The plot synopsis from production weekly lists Hal Jordan and not John Stewart as the wearer of the ring, which if accurate, would probably mean Common won’t be starring in this film.

Justice League

Also, about that Justice League movie… Unfortunately, I’m hearing it might be back on. Seems like after the success of Marvel Entertainment’s Iron Man, DC is hot to get some projects on the fast track. I haven’t been able to confirm this with a second source, but it looks like the project might not be as dead as everyone first believed. And if so, is George Miller still in line to helm the project or did Warner Bros reach out to another SUPER director? I just wish this project would die the death it deserves. Either that or get a director to completely overhaul everything, because right now it smells like bad goods.

  • Oh Blair
I agree peter, the justice league is a bad bad bad idea, like really bad, i like batman and i dont want him to be ruined again
  • kadeity
Common wont be playing Green Lantern if they are having the story about Hal Jordan. Hal Jordan is white, and Common was going to play John Stewart, another person who was the Green Lantern for a while.

The People who have been a Green Lantern for Earth in the comics are Alan Scott, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, & Kyle Rayner.
  • september11th
how about they stop making these shitty comic book movies. jesus christ. its liek 10 a year.
  • T-MACK
Common has amazing versatility as a lyricist and hip hop performer. He's one of the few hip hopa rtists who as managed to stay relevant over 15+ years. I'm rooting for him on this one.
  • Captain Awesome
The JLA is bad right now because they need to establish the other guys first. It's a MASSIVE team film. Do a proper GL and Flash movie first. Nolan set the standard in terms of dedication to a comic franchise.

Not in terms of tone, but how he went about grounding one of their A-list characters. A good GL film would be very cool.
  • krackajap
In brightest day, in blackest night,
no evil shall escape my sight!
Let those who worship evil's might,
beware my power.. GREEN LANTERN'S LIGHT!

with that being said, this movie will suck.
  • Adam B.
    I'm with you, T-Mack.
would be interesting to see him act.
  • J'osh
I've circulated this idea with my buddies. Here is how DC should proceed. "Super Max" will have a moment where Green Arrow hears rumbling about Villains teaming up, more to the point - talk of a Secret Society of Supervillains. Along with his innocence getting this info to the outside needs to play prominently. You then have great DC movies each dropping hints and building toward the eventual JLA vs The Secret Society of Supervillains movie.

Film it as two parter back to back. Throw gobs of money at Bale and whammo instant cool flick. To boot make Darkseid be found out as the eventual string puller.
  • Captain Awesome
    Yeah Adam B,

He was great in that GAP commercial!
  • ddy_blue
No Green Lanterm moviee.....at least now now...it just doesnt feel right and for the Justice League movie i dont know....i have my doubts like everyone...and common..humm maybe not the best actor....
  • BFFredo
I'm against a JLA movie as there's no way they could get Superman and Batman in there without them relegating the rest of the JLA into sidekick status.

    It's a bad, bad idea.

As for a John Stewart-GL movie, why not? IF DONE RIGHT, GL can be DC's answer to Iron Man (who, let's face it, wasn't a commonly known superhero outside of comic book geek circles). Common can act, but you gotta get him out of his "I'm the coolest, baddest, muthaf---a in this room" mode that he's slipped onto in Street Kings and Wanted.
  • some_dude
This will be pretty lame most likely. I am sick of origin stories for every superhero movie. 90% of the people that go to see the films already know who the hero is. If they wanted to make a good GL movie then they would have him kicking ass from the very beginning of the movie and let it be 90 minutes of superhero ass stomping .. then I would be on board
  • first off, it isn't like they picked common off a soup line and gave him a screenplay. the guy was in SMOKIN ACES, AMERICAN GANGSTER and WANTED and regardless of what you think about those movies, GREEN LANTERN isn't HAMLET.

secondly, the JUSTICE LEAGUE movie is an easy stepping stone for warners to use as launchpad for other franchises the same way fox couldn't get a SILVER SURFER movie to work, and they stuck him in a FANTASTIC FOUR movie. if it works, he gets his own movie, if not, well he wasn't getting a movie anyway.

thirdly, christopher nolan has gone out of his way to make the BATMAN movies rooted in reality. sticking christian bale's BATMAN next to amazons and martians would be a trainwreck. not to mention bale is signed to a three picture deal... do you think they really want to waste that appearance in a new film where splits his screentime with six other heroes (who they are trying to get franchises to) and villians?

the easiest way to make JUSTICE LEAGUE work and warner can have their cake and eat it to is to make it take place twenty years from now. SUPERMAN, BATMAN and WONDER WOMAN are in their late forties. introduce a different FLASH or GREEN LANTERN. think of it had the JLA reformed in that KINGDOM COME universe. this way they can recast the lead characters, knowing this is where bale BATMAN or routh's SUPERMAN will be. if gives the singer and nolan individual freedom to keep their franchises going and not have to shoehorn someone else's continuity into their film. if it works, we get to have a separate film explaining WONDER WOMAN, FLASH or GREEN LANTERN's origins with actors playing them in their twenties.

the biggest problem is warner will take their lead characters and make them older than the demographic they like to court (15 to 25) and there will be a fear you'll loose audience but to a ten year old, there isn't much difference between thirty and forty-five.

  • Chocolate Jebus
Oh for gods sake. Scrap the JLA movie - BAD, BAD, BAD news.

Green Lantern could be cool but i see it as being DC's version of Iron Man and they will probably treat it likewise. No bad thing.

But PLEASE if you want to maintain DC momentum just get the next Superman movie going. You have the cast, outfits, director etc. Just get a script!!
  • Dave
Why is that guys name September 11th? If he is trying to remember, who cares? If he is trying to be cynical, what the fuck?
  • Dave
    September 11th? Why?
  • REAL6
    Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww@ Common's Racist ass...

If they did do John Stewart then have Michael Jai White as GL!!!
  • gocitizen
Superhero team stories don't lend themselves to compelling film....or comics for that matter. I've never understood the appeal.
  • Tekjock
REAL6, I was about to say the same, Michael Jai White showed in Silver Hawk he can do the action scenes. He looks the part to.
  • mfillmore
First of all, you guys are missing the whole point. The Justice League came into being because no one here, no matter how great can do everything. In the comics story after story was about how even what seemed the weakest heros could save the word. I don't see how you can even pan a movie until its made. Casting choices should be questioned. The idea of seeing all my heros on screen excites me.
  • Jacob
if DC and Warner Bros. MUST do the justice league movie, they should do what Marvel is doing: make a movie about all the members of the Justice League (Wonder Woman, Flash, the Green Lantern, etc.), then when the time is right, make the movie with the actors who have established the roles (Christian Bale as Batman, Brandon Routh as Superman, etc.)
That would be a kickass justice league movie.
  • Tekjock
I can agree to that ... having anyone else play batman at this time would be a horrible decision as C Bale's batman is so well done. I know I personally like him as Bruce Wayne and as batman.
  • DarkMatter
I only say a Justice League movie should occur if the respective characters and actors of other movies are in the movie. I hate when they replace characters with other actors, for me it messes with continuity.
  • gah
RECAST JLA if not SCRAP IT
  • 790, hates mondays
I'm all for a Green Lantern Film, and I don't care if Lanterns black or white, but I'm flat out against hip-hop "performers" getting movie roles.
Stay in your shit hip hop world, stay out of movies. Common, ice -t, snoop , the dildo that sucked in X-Files. (YOUR ALL A BUNCH OF NO-TALENT WANNABEES!!). Piss off, stay in da hood and kill each other off. Thanks.

I hope they fast track JLA just so I can laugh at the collossal falure it will be.
Yeah recast Supes and Bats, see how that flys. Douche bags.
  • BYAAH!
It has to be hal jordan, the best green lantern. Jim Carry could play hal. I know, he was the shitty riddler but he has the look for Hal. Bring Vincent Price back from the dead to play Sinestro. Some unknown as Carol Ferris.
  • Mr. Wayne
some dude ^^ your an idiot!! what the hell do you mean why does every super hero movie have to have an origin story??? ugh! why are you even on here????
  • Hogan!
Jim Carrey wasn't that bad as the riddler! He did what the director told him to do. Jim Carrey can be a great actor if he wants to be. I think with the right direction he coulda pulled off the riddler w/ more dpth than he did in Forever, the script and director was crap nobody ever blames them so why do they blame the actor all the time, ppl forget they only do what their told. If Schumacher said " do it a little more cartoony!!" then carrey had to do it. I mean so is the Costume he wore at the end his fault too??........RIDDLE ME THIS...RIDDLE ME THAT! was that him too? lol
  • Dark Nightz!
    lol true
  • Shadow of the Bat
I hope common doesn't get the role, if they do decide Jon stewart over Hal Jordan I hope it's not a friggin' rapper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. There's so many good black actors out there with talent that never gets a shot and that nobody knows about. There were so many actors on "the wire" that HBO show that have talent it's insane and their goin w/ "COMMON" why ??because he was in that Keanu reeves movie? Find somebody else man! wtf is wrong w/ you HOLLYWWOOD!!!
  • Travis Mcgee
I really hope they make a GL film based on Hal Jordan's GL...

There is no way that Bale's Batman could be in a team with Superman or WonderWoman or Martian ManHunter... It would destroy what is so great about the universe that Nolan has created. I could see the Green Arrow as a possible "cross-over" with a Batman. I actually liked the SuperMax idea for Green Arrow...

THe best JL movie that we will probably ever see is the animated New Frontier.
  • @darkmatter: there is no continuity. these aren't comics. this isn't a television series where the same producers, writers and directors are working on a shared storyline. what you are talking about is a half-dozen different movie projects done by three dozen different creative people and you're wanting them to co-exist. they can't even do that in comics. SUPERMAN and BATMAN are done through legendary. WONDER WOMAN is being done through silver pictures. hell if i even know who's got FLASH and GREEN LANTERN. sure MARVEL has done it... in two movies. and they had to create their own studio to do that.

what amazes me here (and everywhere actually) is how many people come across as blatant racists. common is being thrown under a bus not because he's a bad actor, but because he's a rapper. nobody here as mentioned any movie where he's given a poor performance as their reason. they throw him into a pile with ice-t, xhibit, ice cube and whoever because they're rappers. never mind queen latifah has an oscar nomination or that biggest movie star in the world right now is a rapper (will smith who also has two oscar nominations). really? what have you got? jim carrey's last hit was 2003. matt damon can't open a movie without the word "bourne" in the title. brad pitt's never opened a movie by himself. adam sandler, ben stiller and will ferrell are hit and miss. tom cruise hasn't recovered since the oprah incident.

i'm not saying i am for or against, i am just saying it's a weak argument and comes off as judging a person based on who he's associated with and quite frankly, rings a bit racist.
  • 790
So I'm a blatant racist because I hate rappers and actors that use their street name in movies.

What about eminem and white rappers. I hate there ass too! Now what?
  • Captain Awesome
    Rapper racist!

    ;)
  • Frank Jaeger
Common: please do not act anymore. please.
  • Doonesbury
    @ 790

I agree. Why do rappers suddenly wanna act? I bet it first started out as some cameo or whatever then they started wanting more roles and so they got it. I understand if they wanna fund their own film like that 50 cent semi autobiography or whatever, but when they start seeping into hollywood and getting legit parts. It's pretty annoying watching a film then suddenly seeing a rapper with a serious role come into the scene. And now a rapper possibly playing classic superhero? come on.
  • 790
James Ford , Seriously what kind of Politically Correct, Orwellian world do you want, when everything can be called racist ?

If it wasn't for having respect for this site I would give you a ton of shit on this one.
Hip Hop "acts" and Rappers have very little respect for anything..... Get real,
I live in L.A., I see there "behavior" everyday out here..... Guys like Common and Snoop are a plague.
  • 790
One reason Doonesbury, (IMO) is because these guys all want to be in films, so they use rap music as a way to get into the biz, they then typically retain their hip hop name so that their not viewed as a sell out, and to continue pushing their cds at the local 7-11 market.

That's great whatever, but lose the street name if you want me to take you serious at all. And leave your 20 friends at home.
Serioulsy these posses are a fracken joke.
    Insecure f#*ks.
  • jj gonzo
i've been saying it since the
beginning,I want green lantern the movie!!!!
    thank you DC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • samuel
Be nice to see Tom Welling finally wearing the Superman costume. Maybe the WB agrees and that's why they are recasting the characters instead of using Christian and Brandon and not wanting to ruin the world their directors built for them. Only movie I know Common from is Wanted and well wouldn't call that good or horrible acting he was just there. Green Lantern has some serious potential hopefully its not a copy of Iron man and really embrace the epic story that is Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern corps
  • Bat-fan
no one has anything against rappers acting , Queen latifah, will smith and even ice cube...hell tupac was great. Common as green latern??? COMMON??? what about columbus short?? BTW a justice league movie should be made...just not right now
  • zorburt
i think jon stewart should play john stewart in blackface. anyone? anyone? best movie ever!

no i'm not being racist, just bad attempt at humour. i like the idea of JLA but i don't think it'd be done right and it'd just be another sad sad embarrassing hole in the DC world. poor DC.

also, since i'm new to the forum, what's with shoving various words such as titles all in caps james ford? stylistically it hurts my eyes. but i don't use caps at all so who am i to say right?
  • @790: just so we're clear. i never insulted anyone here. i haven't been rude or irrational. i said the comments come across as racist. i didn't say anybody was racist. there is a difference.

scroll through these posts and non-stop people have attacked rappers as talentless hacks which may or may not be true but not one person has pointed to an example. we'll just round up all the rappers and say they suck. we're not going to judge them individually, we're going to judge them as a group.

@doonesbury: i'll tell you why rappers get so many parts. it's because they already come prepackaged with a character. most rappers, especially when they get started, essentially play a version of the image they've already manufactured. ice cube in BOYZ N THE HOOD, ice-t in TRESPASS, eminem in EIGHT MILE, will smith in FRESH PRINCE, 50 cent in GET RICH... it's one less thing to sell to an audience because they've already bought it and hopefully their fanbase will come.

rock stars want to be actors too. bob dylan in PAT GARRET AND BILLY THE KID, david bowie in THE PRESTIGE, tom waits in BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA, courtney love in THE PEOPLE VS LARRY FLYNT or meatloaf in FIGHT CLUB.

but listen to what people have said: "if they wanna fund their own film like that 50 cent semi autobiography or whatever, but when they start seeping into hollywood and getting legit parts" sounds a lot like stay in your movies and leave mine alone which isn't that far from go back to where you came from. go back to your illegitimate movies. don't try and get out of your stereotype ghetto, stay where you belong.

again, never mind that mos def has put in performances in things like THE WOODSMAN, THE ITALIAN JOB and WHAT THE LORD MADE. that people like ridley scott will have common in AMERICAN GANGSTER or that martin scorsese will have mark wahlberg (a rapper) in THE DEPARTED. that curtin hanson will follow LA CONFIDENTIAL with EIGHT MILE and jim sheridan will direct IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER and MY LEFT FOOT and still direct GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN. i would think if it would be good enough for those guys it would at least be good enough for you guys to consider.

you can toss out eminem but 99.5% of rappers are black and when you say things like they can have their own movies but why must they be in mine or these people are a plague... well, call it like you see it.

for the record, i stopped listen to rap music probably about fifteen years ago. i can't stand it now. as an african american i often find it insulting and embarassing. and as someone earlier said, i've seen common in a few films and i agree, he's just there. he doesn't suck out loud like madonna and nobody will be be tossing him an oscar anytime soon. but did IRON MAN really need an actor of terence howard's ability? no. and neither does john stewart.

but if i am going to condemn someone for a part i won't attack them for something unrelated. i hate margaret cho but in FACE/OFF and THE LOST ROOM, she's not playing a comic so it's irrelevant. if i am going to condemn someone it's going to be because they can pull that part off, not because i don't respect or like their day job.
  • @zorbert: blackface john stewart as john stewart is hysterical. very funny. then again i have been lobbying for years for ben stiller and owen wilson to do a blue beetle/booster gold movie... what do i know?

as for the capital thing, i am sorry. i generally type in alllowercase except for film titles because it draws the eye to it. my bad. sorry to hurt your eyes.
  • Shadow of the Bat
well look I'm black and I hate to say it but yo'...........no Common!
  • Mr. Pennyworth
James Ford I get what your saying but c'mon dude you know what we're sayin' we're saying that rappers aren't actors and hollywood is hiring "rappers" over actors when there are so many actors out there to choose from. I don't think it's a coincidence that all of the biggest selling rappers "happen " to make movies not from their talent but because they are rappers! , Ludacris?bow wow in fast and the furious, P. diddy in raisin in the sun, 50 cent got a fuggin movie w/ deniro and pacino coming outrighteous kill ! , common american ganster, wanted? T.i. was in american gangster. Where are the Actors w/ depth? aside from Will Smith , Denzel and the rock there's nobody qualified to play john sterwart ?so hollywood relies on finding a "name brand" celeb that's black and will say "yeah" . There's no shortage of out-of-work black actors more qualified than "Common"
  • Green Ring!
John Ford did you just ask did Iron man need a actor of terrence howard's "ability?" um, YEAH! because he's going to be WaR mAcHiNe and in the sequel they want to have him there when Tony Starks goes through his alchoholic depression and that needs a vulner"ability".
  • JLA
I do want a justice league movie but there must be 2 conditions #1 it has to be after nolan's films are complete and # 2 the justice league has to be over 35 or else it wouldn't make since for everybody tp be 21 years old (which is what they want) because.....the justice league must be accomplished individually FIRST before they join the JLA and a 21 year old Bruce wayne wouldn't quite fit.
  • Jl UNLIMITED
Yeah I agree JLA ^ because the script they have SUX search on line if you want the outline of it but you can tell it's gonna suck....after the dark knight the bar for all super hero films has been raised so....start over get a great writer like paul haggis to do it and please don't embarass my favorite ensemble because I like the League more than The avengers but...so far the Avengers movie has the upper hand
  • 790
Well James, I guess the problem I have with your comments is the context in the way you used the word "racist" to describe our (certain ppl, nobody in particular) dislike of rappers.
I felt your inital use of the word was a out of context since being a rapper isn't a race,,,
((and I really get pissed when the racist angle is thrown out there)).......
    ^
You stopped listening to rap years ago , therefore I don't understand your defensive postion, unless you for some reason think that my comments are based on rappers mostly being 99% black,,,,If so I say your assumption is INcorrect.....

I don't like Rap and Hip Hop!!! Dosnt matter what color they are, (Mark Walhburg sucks on many levels) the "music" has no redeming qualities, (IMO), and I think it sucks that young kids get exposed to it the way the sneek it into the films with a rapper here a female pop star there. Meanwhile real actors are pushed out.

    (ImO)
Rap and Hip-hop is a plague, a manifestation of sex, hate and voilence. That's all great if your an adult, but sheesh dude, watch the Teen Choice awards tonight and see the smut their peddeling and its chock full of horrible Hip Hop. Crap.
    ^
The Synergy going on between movie studios and music outlets is partly the reason Rappers have this condiuit. There all under one corporation.

    Peace bro !
