Vivendi Entertainment picked up the U.S. rights to David Zucker’s new comedy An American Carol. Imagine for a moment, a retelling of A Christmas Carol, but instead of Ebenezer Scrooge, we have a cynical, anti-American documentary filmmaker unsubtlely named Michael Malone, who sets out on a crusade to abolish the July Fourth holiday with his film Die You American Pigs. On the fourth of July, he is visited by three ghosts who tey to show him the meaning of Independence, instead of Christmas. If you were a Hollywood studio executive, and heard this pitch, would you greenlight the film?

Zucker is known as the mastermind behind Airplane! and the Naked Gun films, but also the last two Scary Movie films. Chris Farley’s brother Kevin Farley stars as the filmmaker, alongside Kelsey Grammer seen above as General Patton, next to Jon Voight as General Washington. Also, Leslie Nielsen as himself, Bill O’ Reilly as himself, Dennis Hopper, and James Woods. Call me a liberal, but this just sounds lame.

now they are just telling us outright that we are watching propaganda and the population still eats it up. this is one of those movies that even if it is the most god awful thing to come out people will still be labeled as "unamerican" for not bowing down to it. shiz son.
  • Robert Gills
    You're a liberal!
  • I think it would be an interesting movie if done by anyone else that Zucker. It needs to be a more understated, clever movie, and zucker is about as clever as slipping on a bananna peel.
  • Also, Kevin Farely is that guy from the Hertz commericals who is spying on Hertz. Thats a bad sign.
  • CJ
well at least he's not a spy
  • Joseph Ferrarelli
    I want to see this.
  • mudywaters
It looks bad. I was an extra in this movie.
  • gah
    Ugh. Just Ugh.
  • Eddie
it has Kelsey Grammar in it. How bad can it be? (insert sarcasm here)
  • JFK
I don't understand why patriotism is so funny to so called "conservatives".
  • I trust Zucker to pull this off. I'm sure he's no conservative waiting to reveal his political nature with this film. If the satire's sharp, this could be worth watching. And yes, I thought both of the last two Scary Movies were worth watching.
  • Kevski
This looks like steaming garbage! And it's a bad contradiction in terms. The best comedy challenges the status quo... it doesn't uphold it. This crap will be in theaters for a week... if they're lucky. grand opening... grand closing.

Frenchies are releasing this? I love irony.
  • igroveman
Most Americans don't deserve America and, if their attitudes characterized our ancestors of yore who threw off oppression, we'd still be a British colony. Or worse, a Nazi one.

Too bad it might take another 10-15 9-11's before liberals realize it's actually better to love your country than to hate it.
  • Windmillninja
It promotes America! It must be Republican! Fanboy kneejerk! Fuck this movie! Hope! Change!

    You kids are lame.
  • sounds like right-wing propaganda garbage.
  • Bob
I predict Zucker will be found "dead of an overdose" or having "shot himself in the back of the head" before this film is ever allowed to come out. Expressing anything other than a "Loyal Leftist" viewpoint is very dangerous in today's world.
  • The Joker
i'm excited about this, sounds good!

    right wing propaganda? lol
  • Bugsy
For all the left-leaning intellectual giants who contributed comments thus far, how about getting reintroduced to your sense of humor? Maybe the movie will be funny, maybe it won't. Maybe it will be a mixed bag. But if something is being satirized, whether from the right or the left or the mainstream center, then there is room for satire. Propaganda is when it's done with a straight face. When laughs are involved it's meant to entertain and maybe cause a little discussion. That's not a bad thing. By the vicious attacks, sight unseen, you continue to make liberalism the most intolerant "ism" instead of the original intent - to be the most tolerant. Ironically, the conservatives seem more respectful in most forums. Pity.
  • JJ
It sounds lame to me, unless they walk an extremely fine line and acknowledge very real liberal complaints, while showing at the same time that American ideals are worth it even if they are often carried out imperfectly or totally ignored in both domestic and foreign policy. I have a feeling that this is asking too much of Zucker, considering his recent work. They'll have to work pretty hard to convince me though, especially with an appearance by Bill O'Reilly, champion of the blowhard right.
  • Tallulah
I saw this film at a screening in Santa Monica. I found it hysterically funny. And it IS a comedy, not a piece of manipulative propaganda. I'm quite sure that there are those politically correct souls who will be offended that the Michael Moore character is portrayed as fat and apparently malodorous. They would think it more "fair" for Brad Pitt to have been cast. But then being P.C. has never been accompanied by being rational. Those rational beings, possessed of a sense of humour will laugh out loud through most of this wacky movie. And if you harbor palpable malevolent feelings towards MM, as I do, you will probably experience many vicarous pleasures from seeing him slapped around whilst being called "lard ass" and many other accurately affectionate names. All the great actors in cameo roles are terrific.

I live in the "Peoples Republic of Santa Monica", so to sit in a theater with other people who also think America is the greatest country in history and not "the great Satan", was not only a novelty but a pure unadulterated pleasure. And these people were mostly lifelong Democrats, who can no longer believe in their party, vote for their candidate and who have all probably changed parties by now. I guess we are now the Post 9-11 Republicans as is Zucker.

And now, at the risk of offending you proud Liberals.....
    God Bless America.
  • dopiestghost
I always find it curious (ie: dumb) how many liberals make the jump from "I hate this administration" to "I hate this country." If you don't want to see something that upholds this country, why exactly are you living here? Of course, when a liberal candidate gets elected into office, then you'll love America. It's so hypocritical: "we love this country as long as we win the vote."
  • jimbo stewart
Hmmm... I had no idea Zucker was a Conservative.

I'll wait until I see the trailer before I make my decision on whether to see it or not.
  • Pete (original)
    you're a liberal
  • I love how the Republicans would like to take liberals and box them into being UnAmerican. It's kinda like the pot calling the kettle black. I have never seen a group of people so hell bent to turn the United States into a bunch of communists. The "true" Conservatives are the ones that are true republicans and Americans not this neo conservative movement, it is something dark and misleading. Republicans the "real" ones anyway believe we should have smaller goverment and less hand outs. Sorry but the way my tax dollars have been spent over the last 8 years, I would rather see more social programs because the goverment's going to waste my money anyway. If you disagree go look at our deficit and you will see what I am talking about. I will take Socialism over Communism any day of the week. I know it doesn't look like Communism now but the future is full of it, if we head in this direction. So I am sorry I don't find Zucker funny or the idea amusing. It's just more neo conservative propaganda that is full of numb skulls that hate the United States and our Constitution. So drink the kool aid.
  • jimbo stewart
    @ Pete

How dare you call me a liberal.
  • Lib4
I am assuming Patricia Heaton and Heid Montag have cameos in this steaming pile...
To the CONS on the board asking for a fair judgement...ummm we dont do that here, political movie or not ALL movies are pre-judged on this blog...you dont like it; then you dont like America!!!!!......hmmmm
  • Christopher
Hmm. The premise has some merit, but this is going to prove even more partisan than W, probably. It will probably also be worse.
  • Christopher
I mean, like Christmas Carol, the idea of Independence day is corrupted by merchandising and barbeques. I'd love a film where someone is shown the true meaning of patriotism and independence day. A film along those lines would be interesting and worth a watch. However, the highly partisan nature of this film, especially the lowbrow attack on Michael Moore (do away with independence day? Noone wants to do that outside of Conservative wet dreams) makes this pretty low on my to-see list. I'll wait for the trailer for a final judgement, but I'll probably stay as far away from this as I have the liberal anti-war trash that came out last year.
  • Jim
    Oh misguided nationalism.

American - Someone born in or achieving citizenship of the United States

Unamerican - Someone not having the qualities of an American. I.e. not born in or having citizenship of the United States.

I'm pretty sure Both Michael Moore and Bill O' fall into the American category. To suggest otherwise is trying to add other qualifications to being an American. Qualifications that don't exist.
  • Bugsy
What's with the liberal battle cries and pre-judgements? It's a movie for God's sake, not national doctrine. Conservatives not only endured Farenheit 911 they went to see it, so they could talk and write intellgently about it. Liberals used to be intellectually curious...now they are more like facists wherein we all have to think alike and walk in political lock-step. Screw that! I've looked over the conservative comments on this crawl and the liberal ones and the truth is the real tight-asses are the liberals! Read the comments top to bottom and see for yourselves...then, if you are a liberal fascist, go out and buy an enema kit, maybe two and purge until we all feel better.
  • Zucco
Can't wait to see this! Go, Zucker, before the Dems impose the "Fairness Doctrine" again!

Most Americans have ZERO clue about "freedom" - actually it's Liberty - freedom + responsibility; too much of this sorry planet is immersed in sorrow, tyranny and abject misery. WE cannot solve it; WE cannot save "the planet" - what we need to save is Liberty -

We don't have a "statue of freedom" - we have a Statue of Liberty.

    Liberty is freedom plus responsibility.

There is very little "freedom" let alone Liberty on most of this sorry planet: go to any 3rd world country, anywhere in Africa, Asia, China [most of Russia too] - oh, and possibly Venezuela [the new Castro] - and you'll find so much love for Liberty you'll want to move there in a heartbeat. Except your beating heart will be literally held in the hand of your blood thirsty "freedom fighter" - if you're lucky - otherwise you'll rot in a jail with no cable tv.
  • Jamal
Sound's like it'll be a funny movie. I'll wait to see it before I pass any positive or negative comments. Can't understand how people can make a judgement about a movie they haven't seen yet - Pretty close minded judgemental people I think.

(And I said sounds like a funny movie - not make any judgements here)
  • Holger Danske
Come on all of you conservatively minded neandrathals. You know when you are trying to be funny it is just propaganda. When you criticize Obama you are racist. When you support the war you are just warmongers. When you are judgemental and want criminals punished you are just being haters. Don't you know they have had such difficult lifes faced with so much oppression that they deserve to be angry. Just kidding. I wanted to see what it was like to look at it from your perspective......I'm feelin kinda sick now! LMAO
  • smartypants
Well, this movie might be lame or it might be funny, or somewhere inbetween. The real point is that many flicks that emanate from Hollywood have a distinct, and sometimes even abrasive, leftward flare. These films give little or no respect to contrary views and are often times unfair in their perspective. This is a turn-off to those of us who do not share this far left philosophy. Personally, I'd rather see the film industry avoid politics altogether. Since, however, the leftists in Hollywood are not going to allow that to happen (witness the latest in a line of movies that nobody will see--"W"), it is refreshing to see a diffrent viewpoint presented on film, even if it is a comedic farce.

And to the poster who asked why would want to see a movie in favor of the status quo. It seems to me the current prevailing conventional wisdom in this country is that the Iraq War is bad; Bush is bad; Republicans are bad; Conservatism is wrong, etc. At least this is what I see and hear in the media on a daily basis. Given this, I believe Zucker and his crew can now properly be considered part of the modern counterculture.
  • squiffis
Of course it sounds lame to you. You are part of the thin skin left (e.g. left wing media). You are so stupid that a satirical blast at your world view causes you to kick back with criticizm before you've even seen the film. I'm guessing you have an IQ of about 99 and the only reason you write is that nobody would actually hire you for a productive career job.
  • Nicola Timmerman
If you want to see what it cost to get to Independence Day, rent the mini-series John Adams on DVD. If the founding fathers had been convicted of treason they would at best have been hung, but possibly drawn and quartered.

I wonder if Moore will sue!
  • Abraham Stubenhaus
I can't wait to see this film, "An American Carol!"
Who else would have the guts, the talent and the honesty to tell it like it is and yet make it all enjoyable by presenting it all in the format of a comedy?
Bring it on David Zucker, on and on!
I'm rather bored of all the, "Please cut off my other toes because you only cut off three so far," bent over backwards, Uncle Tomming, I didn't mean to buy those slaves two hundred years ago, I really think we are not giving Iran a chance, the poor innocent Palestinians killed those Jews in Israel in 1929 and 1935 before there was an Israel, because they knew that in 1967 they could say, "You took our land," history twisting faker lefties.
  • William
I love how half the people here immediatly say that this film is a flop and they wont see it just because it has a couple of scenes that make fun of Liberals in Hollywood, David Zicker isnt conservative either he is very much in the middle and he makes fun of all sides, I love how some of these people complain about tolerance and racism in the right but the immedialty try to stop anyone who agrees with them and they are very intolerant to others viewpoints
  • Highlander
Why do so many of you think that the Hollywood left is somehow above satire? I'm not a conservative, but I'm conservative enough to recognize the rediculousness of Rosie O'Donnell, Michael Moore and Al Gore in their moments of over-zealous liberalism. This subject is ripe for parody, and I'm sure it will be a big hit.
  • commonsense
Ah yes, the knee jerks have spoken once again. Remember folks, with liberal fascism no other free speech is allowed other than that being spoken by the left and under the guise of the term progressive. There's no room for intelligent discussion but rather they prefer to make exaggerations, inaccurate embellishments to bolster their frail arguments, and resort to personal attacks unrelated to the issues.
Absolutely agree, Highlander.. there's plenty of people - maybe even a majority - that recognize the ridiculous extremes of identity politics, multiculturalism, and marxist ideology that gave us the gift of political correctness. That absurdity is humorous.
  • Matt
Can't wait to go see this. Saw the trailer and it looked hysterical.
  • Sonya
This movie looks like it's going to be a riot. I cannot wait to see it. I quit watching Family Guy, even though I used to love it, because I just couldn't take the incessant liberal whining and anti-conservative jokes that got very tiresome after awhile. I'm quite capable of laughing at myself on occasion, but I can only take so much, and eventually the axe-grinding started drowning out the jokes altogether. Hopefully I've found something to make me laugh again, catered to my tastes, which is quite rare these days (aside from Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld. That show is great).
  • desertreaper
How sad do you have to be to automatically associate pro-American with Conservative? "G-D America, but don't call me unpatriotic!"
  • desertreaper
"G-D America, but don't call me unpatriotic!" Error, error, does not compute!
  • Brian
I can't wait for this film to come out (October 3), anything that mocks the un-American Michael Moore and Rosie O'Donell, is fine by me! :) By the way Peter, you are a liberal and you know it!!
  • Preston Cooper
I don't see anything wrong with this idea! I think it's great! It's been long over due in Hollywood for Ideas like this. Hollywood is filled to the brim with liberal think tanks. Liberals bark all day long about the Fairness Act, how dare they object to this? It's absolutely ridiculous of liberals to object to this!!! WHAT ARE THEY SO SCARED OF???
