Pixar Developing Monsters, Inc. 2?

It’s funny how the tides change so quickly. At WonderCon 2007, Brad Bird insisted that Pixar was not in the sequel business. Bird said:

“At Pixar, the bottom line is the story that you’re telling. And Pixar does not look at sequels as a financial plan. We feel we have a relation ship with the audience and that they believe in each movie we put out. We believe completely in every movie we put out. If I can come up with a story that is as good or better than that first film, then I’d love to return to that world, but it would have to be story first.”

After Disney acquired Pixar, Toy Story 3 was confirmed. Less than a year after Wondercon, Disney announced that the Emeryville powerhouse would be making a Cars sequel. And just last week at Comic Con, Monsters, Inc director Peter Doctor revealed to MTV that they have quietly been developing ideas for a sequel.

“We’ve thought about it,” “Monsters, Inc.” director Pete Doctor told MTV. “We’ve got a couple ideas.”

It seems to me that Pixar is in the sequel business. And don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti sequel. I’m just anti-bad sequels. And yes, most sequels are not The Dark Knight or The Godfather 2. Most sequels are made for money reasons rather than story reasons. So the question is, does the world of Monsters, Inc have enough laugh juice for a second movie? I’ll tell you this: I have a lot more faith in a Monsters, Inc sequel than I do in Cars 2.

  • If Pixar makes a "Cars" sequel I will lose all respect in the company, no matter what else they do. I really hope they do not make a "Cars" sequel.

I would LOVE to see a monsters inc. sequel! my son is two and loves monsters inc., cars and toy story 1 and 2. It is very hard to find toys for these movies. I am very excited about any and all these sequels! make them PLEASE!!!!!!!!!
  • Hiphopopotamus
RFKOO, your only reason why making sequels would be is to simply get the merchandise? That's the same attitude that pushed Eisner to make Cinderella 2 and Aladdin: King of Thieves.
  • CMM
    I loved Cars!
  • @ Scott:

The Cars sequel has been announced for a few months...
  • Um, TOY STORY 2 has earned Pixar immunity for negative sequel discussions for the forseeable future.
  • J.Luna
I think that they want to become as big as Universal, WB, or even Disney. To do this means generating profits. Lot's of profits. Hopefully they can do this without compromising what they are. I enjoyed monsters inc, and I enjoyed cars hopefully, I wouldn't mind revisiting those worlds if there were a good enough reason to. But as of now I don't see a reason, so I guess we'll see.
  • Alan Geiss
I think the Monsters Inc. Sequel should be pretty good. I have faith in it.
  • chad
I see nothing wrong with them going ahead with a sequel to Monsters, Inc. Pixar has proved over and over again that they are committed to great theatrical entertainment. Why keep doubting them just because it's not 100% "fresh" and "new"?

"I have a lot more faith in a Monsters, Inc sequel than I do in Cars 2."

    dude, totally.
  • Kamanda
    I completely agree with you....
  • CJ
Honestly, while a Cars and/or Monsters Inc. sequel sounds bad, I've yet to see a single Pixar movie I dislike (Shorts aside). Until I see one, I'm confident they can make sequels to the two mentioned great.

but of anything, still waiting for my finding nemo sequel announcement.
  • gah
They're doing Cars 2 which is idiotic. I want to see them tackle something new. Sequels are lazy and Pixar is above them.
  • Nothing wrong with sequels as long as they're good. As mentioned, look at The Dark Knight and Godfather... look at Toy Story 2.

I would love to see a sequel to Monsters Inc.
  • Winsjon
I think what Brad Bird said on his statement was taken a little bit out of context. I thought what he meant was Pixar is not looking to do sequels just for financial gains (unlike Shrek sequels). Quality of Pixar films are still their no.1 priority. If a good story about their well-loved characters surface, then it's worth doing a "sequel."
  • Tony
I have a 5 year old cousin that loves Cars. I bet he wants a sequel.
  • PixarFan
Cars 2 is all about the product. I worked in the licensing industry for a number of years and Cars was Pixar's big licensing hit. Look, the toys, bedsheets, t-shirts, etc., are still available at Target and Wal-Mart. A Cars 2 will make it an evergreen brand and provide new characters to make toys. A Monsters, Inc. sequel...now that could be interesting. Cars 2, not so much.
  • The Man
Your 5-year-old cousin is a Philistine.
  • AJ
Just throwing out there that cars was pixar/disney's most profitable film because merchandise is so marketable. Cars 2 is going international, so it should be interesting.
  • david
For my money, the Pixar film that screams out most for a sequel is The Incredibles. Id love to see Brad Bird take a shot at this sometime in the next few years, altho it doesnt seem very likely. Hopefully after 1904 he will reconsider.

Cars 2 and Monsters Inc 2, no thank you. I enjoyed Monsters Inc, but have no desire to see another, and Cars was by far the worst thing Pixar have yet released. Tho it seems it prints them a bucketload of cash where merchandising is concerned, which is probably the only reason they are making part 2.

(And bring on Andrew Stantons John Carter of Mars and Toy Story 3!)
  • Cars Rule
Cars the worst? come on dude. that is probably one of the best Pixar movies after Toy Story.
Pixar makes great movies if I have to pick the worst... maybe Wall-E just because he does not speak that much in the movie.
  • orange cinema
out of all the pixar films, i think monsters inc deserves a sequel the most.
  • Rosario
I could see a Monsters Inc 2 but I am not looking forward to Cars 2 at all. But if I had to choose one movie that needed a sequel I would say The Incredibles could make an great sequel.
  • TheMarquis
    Finding Nemo 2: Finding Nemoer
  • gah
    @ David

You're right. Incredibles would lend itself to a sequel. Since there's one Pixar film per year, i'd hate for it to be wasted on Monsters 2 and Cars 2.
  • J'osh
Yeah personally I don't feel the "Cars" hate. I will also say that every single kid I know, and I'm a father of 4, loves that movie.

I thought that Monster Inc. however had a nice conclusion. But as long as Pixar does it at this point it should turn out fine. A money grab? Maybe. But that doesn't mean it has to suck.

Worry when they announce Ratatouille 2.

    Isn't this old news?

What happened way back in the day when they started with Disney --before they wanted out-- Disney made sure that the deal they had with Pixar was that they could ask for as many sequels as they wanted with the projects they had made with/under the Disney name.

    During the Split scare:
When Pixar was searching for takers, they grew concerned with the fact that their past films were already opted for sequels by Disney and Pixar didn't want to have their name on any of the sequels. During that time in the Disney/Pixar split, the "word on the street" was that Disney was going to make "straight-to-DVD" sequels" of the Pixar movies.

There were articles on this all over the place when Cars was already in production.
  • Sounds Good
  • Jaysun
What Winsjon said is correct, the article should be changed because the context makes it moot. Shrek sequels were announced before they had any real scripts. Pixar has only said they are "developing", without release dates, Cars 2 and Monsters Inc. 2. If the stories aren't great, they won't make it. I really think Cars will end up being a television series, he may have too many ideas, and if they are looking for a "profit" a TV series would generate more characters. If a Pixar movie can produce an SDCC Toy exclusive, they are looking for more Cars content.
  • Ronny
Is a "relation ship" like a starship?
  • JJ
When Toy Story 2 was announced, I had a sinking feeling, but I thought the sequel was twice as good as the original Toy Story. However, I am a little unnerved at what I perceive as Disney's influence on Pixar (sequel talk). But as some people have said earlier, developing does not mean production and as long as Pixar is intent on holding production until the right story comes along, I'll reserve my judgment until the movies come out. I'm worried more about Austin Powers 4, frankly.

What do you guys expect from Disney. Their all about the money.

Pixar has been infiltrated by Vermin.
  • ben
Pixar movies kick ass sometimes. i believe toy story 2 is the only sequel that pixar has done and i thougth it was good. was not a fan of cars or monster inc so they can make as many sequels as they want, its not like i be rushing to the theatres to see any of them except for toy story 3. woody and buzz kick ass.
  • nick
i would love to see a monsters inc 2...i felt like they left a cliff hanger at the end anyway and if they do end up making would i would like to see if that cliff hanger gets resolved
  • Steyn
Taking Monster INC in mind, I personally think it deserves a sequel, as for cars? Nah not at all, and The Incredibles definitely
  • Adam Black
Yeah I loved (Monsters Inc) as each time I watch it I loved the Enviroment of the Storyline and the colours where so 3-D brightly good each time So i'd Fancy a Monsters inc II. The Incredibles II as the end had an underminer.
  • Chris
I'm a huge fan of Monsters Inc. I would really love a Monsters Inc. 2, but it has to have a really great story line. The ending of the first movie was too good to follow up with the disapointment of a really bad sequel. I would also have to agree with throwing the idea of Cars 2 in the can.
  • Shana
Monsters Inc 2 is a fabulous idea!! Monsters 1 is the favorite movie of my 4 and 3 year old!! They would love to see Boo, Sully and Mike all over again!!!!

So would I since I can recite the first movie without having it on the TV!!

    Bring it on!!
  • JoJo
I would love to see a sequel to monster's inc. i loved that movie i just finished watching it, But i felt like they just left us hangin at the end.
  • Row from WV
I would love to see a Monster's Inc. 2, the first one was great. My favorite monster in the movie is Lucky...
  • LARRI
come on pixar!!!!!!!!! monsters inc 2 PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Robert
*sigh* Cars 2 is coming out 2011. WHY NOY MONSTERS INC? WHYYYYY?!?!?!!?
Well lets hope cars 2 will be good.
  • cy(philippines)
    Monster Inc. deserves a SEQUEL!!!
  • pc gamer
    YEAH?!?!?!?! WOO-HOO!?!?!
  • PixarMan1985
First off in my order of ranking I have
    1. Toy Story (the original) 2.Finding Nemo (just as good as #1) 3.Wall-E (beautiful) 4. Toy Story 2 (so good) 5. Rattatoullie (great story! Best ending sequence) 6. Monsters, Inc. (funny! emotional!) 7. A Bug's Life (Funny! Kinda too "kid"ish at times) 8. Cars (enjoyable. My sons love it for sure.) 9. Incredibles (okay. didn't dig the "action" that everyone else raves about)

Now second, (for the Cars 2 detracters) let's not forget that Cars was John Lasseter's tribute to his father's love of automobiles. Has anyone stopped to think that maybe he's making a sequal because he didn't feel that Cars (with all its negative reception) was an inadequete Tribute in John's eyes. Maybe John just wants a second chance to pay homage to his dad and this time maybe he can do it right. I'm sure he doesn't want his attempt to make his dad proud to be the worst thing he ever did. Besides who else than John Lasseter himself should have the right to make a sequel he damn well pleases.
  • pc gamer
pixarman is correct. john sould make another one. it would make his dad proud!
  • kyle
yessssssss make another one at the end they see boo and it ends whats with that mmmaaaakkkkkeee another one
  • marcus
dam you they should make another 1
  • pc gamer
i think he's rite! they SHOULD make another one. nice thinking!
  • pc gamer
Another Monsters Inc.? that is so cooooool! I knew they HAD to make another one.
    I LOVED the first one!
