Sony Developing Venom Spin-Off Movie

Sony is considering making a Spider-Man spin-off movie based on the popular villain Venom. The company had previously commissioned Jacob Estes (Mean Creek) to pen a take, but is now considering going in a completely different direction according to The Hollywood Reporter. They are seeking new writers for an entirely new draft, and are also supposedly looking at replacing Topher Grace, who played the role in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3. Sony is still hoping to release a fourth Spider-Man film in 2011. Raimi confirmed at Comic Con that he is still waiting to read the script. Basically, Sony is looking to squeeze as much out of their deal with Marvel as they can.

Comic Book movies are hot again, and Marvel’s option of the film rights to Spider-Man also give Sony the ability to to produce spin-off films based on the characters in that universe. I think hiring someone other than Topher for the role is a smart move. They really need to do everything they can to differentiate the spin-off from the lackluster third film. When I was younger, and had more time to read comics, Venom was one of my favorites. But never once did I actually buy an issue of the Venom spin-off series, because I never thought it would be that interesting. And my thoughts are virtually the same on a Venom spin-off film. Venom is one of those baddies who is only as interesting as his opponent. And I’m pretty sure this project would be Spidey-free.

Discuss: Do you think that a Venom movie is a good idea? or bad idea?

  • Oh Blair
THEY BETTER NOT REPLACE MY TOPHER, that would make me cry

that 70s show, LOL, niiice (borat)
  • Zer0ish
what are you talking about, Venom/Eddie Brock is a jock, not a puny little guy, they have to make it more guided to the comic, it was an insult seeing them use Topher, he was a shitty pick for it.
  • Travis Mcgee
I think this is a bad idea... I never really liked Venom anyway, so I am biased...
  • Matt
I love Venom but I share Peter's skepticism on him as a main character, though nothing's official. Hope they do him justice.
  • KeanE
Venom is always gonna be a great character, but in Spiderman 3 he was just stupid and unnecessary like this spin-off idea..
  • zinkywinks
venom is only good with spiderman... and dont get rid of topher! he was great!
  • Hana
I like Topher but he was a pretty awful Venom. He's not fit for Eddie Brock at all, he wasn't from the get-go. Maybe if they stuck with the comic characterization a little more. A spin off's a horrible idea, though, especially after the deformed excuse for a movie that was Spider-Man 3. Oh, Sam Raimi. Please don't do bad things.
  • Alan Geiss
    this is a terrible idea.
  • Mag
Get rid of Topher! Venom should look like Todd Mcfarlane's Vision not some pansy! End Rant.
  • Captain Awesome
    VENOM GOTTA EAT!
  • Joe
They kinda killed off Venom in the third one.

    No cliffhanger or anything, either.
  • Spin-offs suck
I think you'll find that Dr. Connors still has that sample that Peter brought him...
  • TheDaftPunk
I like Venom, I like Topher. I like when they did that Spiderman movie with Venom as the only enemy. Oh wait.
  • Gentlemen
I like how they got venom exactly correct in Spider-Man 3.
  • bp
i say remake spiderman 3, but this time make it good. which includes taking out sandman.
  • StarBlazer101
That still was from back when I used to believe that spider-man 3 would be the be-all end-all of comic book movies, obviously I was wrong.
  • gah
Why? Why???????????? Hollywood can eat me.
  • :(
I can't believe that anyone would even consider that.... after the atrocity that was Spider-Man 3, I wouldn't want to see anyone adapt Venom into another big-budget movie.
  • evergreen
Hey, guys? Let's put this into context:

Anything would be better than Spider-Man 3.
  • CJ
lets pur rhis into context Spiderman 3 wasn't THAT bad
  • Everyone keeps talking about this "Spiderman 3", must be along the same lines as this fabled "X-Men 3" (??). Really not sure what everyone's chatting on about.

Maybe a Venom film will be like the new Wolverine film, a spin-off taking the place of a Third film in a franchise. Because I'd finally like to see what Venom would be like in a movie.
  • Steelo
Venom is a bad idea. They didn't introduce the character right the first time.
  • GregoryV
venom movie...seriously? venom was popular back ....early 90s?
  • orange cinema
SM3 has been on cable all summer and is growing on me. the fights between harry and peter are downright brutal. yes there are flaws, but i'm more interested in seeing the gang come back for SM4 than a venom flick - and topher was a terrible choice/execution for venom.

i'd love to see what raimi & co. do in the inevitable wave of 'dark/serious' comic films we are about to get in the wake of TDK.
  • Iron Matt
    @bp

Your an idiot. Sandman was one of the best handled characters in that movie. Venom is a pathetic, non-character who ruined that movie. This is a terrible idea.
  • Diego
Oh, damn it. I hope that if they follow through with this, they cut all ties with the Raimi series. And on that note, I wish that series would just die already.
  • gah
    @ Iron Matt

No YOU'RE an idiot. Learn some grammar before putting other people down. Just because someone has a different opinion than you does not make them stupid.
  • x-man
    Yes to a R-rated Venom spin-off

Absolutely NOOOOoo if it is the cheesy, kid-friendly toned down version from Spider-man 3
  • Chris
I'd watch it, even with Topher.

I'm easy to please though, I guess. Hell, I like Spidey 3 overall.
  • xozi
why not join our chatting with black hot girls in wealthyloves dot c om where all Men can find real dream parteners with photos,... who enjoying chatting sports and stars...
  • Chris
    Woo! Hot black girls!

I mean...Dude, Sandman was one of the best parts about that movie. Kept me watching, at least.
  • Rory
    VENOM movie would be cool...
Have spidey in it a little, so like in the same 'Universe', but it be almost completley about VENOM...
    That would be cool...
And maybe begin it again cuz spiderman 3 didnt do it well enough...
  • YoungZe
Spin-off? Why not? Venom Comics work, why shouldn't a movie work? I would love to see one.
  • Floppy
As long as he doesn't spout off cheesy one-liners the entire time like in SM3, I would probably watch it for the simple fact that it's Venom.
  • Tripplo
Venom is my fav bad guy. I had a comic as a kid (which i kept) where venom defends a family in a gas station against some robbers with guns. Not only was it funny, It showed he'd be a nice guy as long as it didnt compromise his whereabouts with the spider. Venom has way more interest then ppl give him credit for. Topher was a wrong cast, they distroyed the character. Everytime "Venom" would talk, they removed he mask and it was that dude from that 70s show again talking in I's instead of We's.

Please re-do it, and give Venom the credit he deserves.
  • mike
They should do a Venom and Carnage movie, Carnage is bad ass...
  • TehTenyo
Venom movie would be good if they didn't mess with the venom story and do it right, get rid of topher (He sucked balls.). And..Carnage would be a good advesary for venom, would be interesting in the least.
  • ben
Not a good idea. I don't see venom as a leading role. He's no wolverine. You just cant get your own spinoff movie.
  • DeadByDawn
Marvel is nuts for letting this happen
  • Twistedlp
Marvel was nuts for letting SM3 happen.
  • zachy Legend
Problem is, Venom was always portrayed as a hissing, drooling, guttural demon voiced badass...especially when he went good guy...He seemed to kick more ass...Topher sounded like Peter Griffon in a Black Spidey outfit.
  • Who would Venom fight? It's a safe bet that it won't be Spidey. For the record, I think Topher Grace would have made a better Peter Parker than Tobey MacGuire.
  • Yeah Venom really needs to play off of Spiderman to be effective. The purpose of Venom I always thought was to tempt Spiderman into becoming evil. That's why he was a cool character, because we all have that temptation of whether or not to do something and that's supposed what Venom is to Spiderman: temptation.
  • VenomFan
Making a Venom movie is a really bad idea. Unless it has Ben Reilly in it. Then, it would be the 2nd coming of The Dark Knight...
  • QuesadaFan2008
I'm thinking they could set it in an alternate universe where Peter Parker made a deal with the devil so that he and Mary Jane are separated now. Norman and Harry Osbourne would be alive again. Get rid of Sandman and bring back Emo Parker...
  • Hana
@QuesadaFan - Huh, where have I heard that before....? Your nick makes me want to punch walls. :(
  • VEnom is one of the most popular Villains in Spidey comics and movie so i think it will be a good idea also because Venom is really cool
  • Darziel
Brock Lesnar would be a PERFECT choice, if they're trying to find the next Venom guy (or some actor that looks similarly bulked-up and ugly, lol). If only he knew how to act... But the inclusion of Carnage is a great idea. Oh, the movie then HAS to be rated R. Not even considering watching it if it's kiddie crap.
  • Isildur
Better get rid of Venom and go straight to Carnage for Spiderman 4, but making him someone rudeless, fearless and anarchist like the Joker. That would be super-cool!!!!
  • Dylan
This would be good if they do it correctly and do away with what they did to him in SM3. Anyway how many people actually knew who Venom was and what he looked like before this movie? To the people who did not know do not think of Venom and SM3 and do some research and find who he is for real.
